There is design and intention behind

creating a nurturing environment. As

evidenced in the Intelligent Home,

nurturing can take the form of the most

technologically advanced device or the

simplest pairing of an image and story in

a frame.

A nurturing environment is restorative and

proactive. It cues the individual and spurs

her towards what she finds meaning and

purpose in—on a regular basis.

The very act of creating a nurturing

environment acknowledges that nurturing

is a basic human need—not something

special or superfluous—but something

essential.

The attributes of a nurturing environment

connect people to their better intentions,

WHY THE HOMENurturing a new home for wellness

to where they find purpose. Purpose is

personal and from this comes action—

behavior. This connection allows people

to find meaning in their everyday lives.

A nurturing environment takes into

account the four dimensions of health:

physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. For

example, a person might have a physical

issue such as heart disease or diabetes.

That person would also have issues in

the other dimensions of their health that

stem from having such a condition: fear,

sadness, hopelessness. The Intelligent

Home presents opportunities to find

methods to measure the effects of

creating a nurturing environment that

address all of these dimensions.

The Intelligent Home is a living laboratory

– a place to explore the paradigm shift

that is placing the home at the heart of

personal and family wellness.

By bringing together the thought

leadership of insurers, wellness experts,

behavioral scientists, healthcare

providers, technologists, athletes, chefs

and home-builders, we are working to

help define a new point-of-care – to

experiment with ways to make “healthy

living” the “way of living” at home.

It has been estimated that of our $3

trillion annual healthcare costs, nearly

70% are heavily influenced by consumer

behaviors, more than 30% can be directly

attributed to behaviorally influenced

chronic conditions, and medication

WHAT WE‘RE DOINGRethink home from a health perspective

noncompliance alone costs $100 billion

(Dixon-Fyle, Gandhi, Pellathy, & Spatharou, 2012).

Lifestyle, obviously, has a significant

impact on healthcare costs. This

undertaking is a holistic exploration of

how we can:

Inspire individuals at the core of their

daily lives.

Physically and programmatically

structure our homes so they make our

lives healthier just by us being there.

Use ambient influencers in our daily

environment to optimize our decision-

making and organically influence our

well-being.

The Intelligent Home 3 The Intelligent Home 4

Create new communities of health

advocacy that will, over time, radiate

from individuals and families, to create

a new paradigm for healthy living in our

society.

By integrating healthy principles into the

home, we can help individuals improve the

healthfulness of their daily lives, moving the

needle on $2 trillion in healthcare costs.

HOW WE‘RE DOING IT

NUDGE‘ing people toward healthier behaviors

The Intelligent Home 5 The Intelligent Home 6

The Intelligent Home is a product of

concept visualization, ideation, experience

design, rapid prototyping, co-creation,

and, of course, iteration.

This living laboratory offers us the space

to be curious. It’s where we can analyze

challenges, envision future possibilities,

and practice the empathy and human

understanding necessary to effectively

reframe the opportunity the home

provides when it becomes the heart of

personal and family wellness.

Our experimentation here manifests a

vision for a new point of care that amplifies

the inherently nurturing characteristics of

home – further endowing the environment

with the ability to serve the family in

ways that are restorative, proactive, and

purposeful. Each of the Intelligent Home

interventions promotes better health

through:

Accessibility – Making healthy living as

easy, flexible, effortless, and affordable as

possible .

Integration – Contributing to an ambient

environment that is fully leveraged,

connected, and cooperative.

Simplification – Making healthier choices

part of the path of least resistance;

embracing the principles of NUDGE*.

HOME AT THE HEART OF PERSONAL AND FAMILY WELLNESS

ABOUT THE MACHADOS

Get to know the family .

The Machado family lives in the Intelligent

Home at Lake Nona. They moved there

recently after Henry Machado’s employer,

a high-end real estate/mortgage broker,

relocated their main office to the Lake

Nona area. Both Henry and his wife,

Marisa, are native Floridians.

On a typical day, Henry comes home

from work and checks his blood pressure

and heart rate before working out on the

treadmill before dinner. Marisa enjoys a

fitness run before preparing dinner while

their daughter Alexis tries to balance her

social life before the start of an online

yoga class.

Their personal stories will demonstrate

how a new generation of home technology

integration is blending together health,

fitness, nutrition, and community into

an easy-to-manage and personalized

approach to healthy home living.

Marisa is a very active 44

years old. She is 5ft 4in

tall and weighs a fit 120

pounds. After the birth of their daughter,

she found it hard to maintain a stable,

healthy weight. Various diet fads followed

by stress-induced eating and alcohol

consumption led to her joining Weight

Watchers® and making some other

positive changes in her life. Within two

years, she reached her target weight of

118 and has stayed within healthy reach of

it ever since.

One way in which she manages her weight

is by running and exercise. At first, Marisa

began jogging to lose weight while she

was on Weight Watchers®, but she quickly

found that she enjoyed running and once

she had hit her weight goal she started to

target running distances.

She has run numerous 5K/10K races over

the past 6 years and has now set a goal to

finish the Disney Princess Marathon next

year. So her immediate goal is to train for

running a half-marathon. She has joined a

group of runners at the Lake Nona Athletic

Club and has been actively monitoring her

training progress.

She is also managing her family’s various

diet and nutritional needs – Henry’s low-

sodium diet for weight loss and cardio

health, her high-energy and caloric needs

as a high-performance athlete, and their

daughter’s pre-diabetic diet monitoring

her glucose levels and trying to reduce her

calories.

Henry Machado is 52 years

old. His 6-foot frame helps

him hide the extra weight

he carries – he currently is 240 pounds

– but he has been overweight much of

middle age. He has always worked in a

high-stressed office environment and

those sedentary hours, plus a general lack

of exercise, created a creeping waistline

that did not become a priority until he was

diagnosed with mild congestive heart

failure back in 2009.

Taking his condition seriously, Henry has

a regular workout routine on the treadmill

and bike trails, yet his CHF often holds him

back from fully exerting himself.

In his younger years, Henry was a natural

athlete and did not pay much attention

to the long term impacts that stress, diet,

or exercise would have on him later in

life. However, he now takes his CHF very

seriously and has the support of his family

to help him maintain his fitness, health, and

dietary regimens.

Henry’s physician has provided him with

a plan to help manage his CHF and Henry

uploads it into the Intelligent Home by

scanning a QR code at the bottom of the

printed instruction sheet. The care plan is

immediately accessible on his smart phone,

Marisa’s tablet in the kitchen, and the

Intelligent Home’s interactive mirror in the

upstairs vestibule. Henry uses the Fitbit Aria

Scale every day to track his heart rate, BMI,

and his weight.

Alexis is a pre-diabetic,

14-year-old teenage girl.

She is 5ft tall and a full-

sized 145lbs making life in the 8th Grade

a social and emotional challenge. She is

smart and often an over-achiever when

motivated or engaging in one of her

passions. But she spends too much of her

time in front of screens – her phone, the

TV, gaming, etc. – and does not get nearly

enough physical activity.

Last year she was diagnosed as being

pre-diabetic and it has been tough for

her to give up favorite foods as well as

find better alternatives. She has been

struggling recently with her studies, not

getting along with her new classmates,

and has been developing a poor self-image.

While being fourteen is never easy, Alexis is

having a tough time right now.

She was always heavyset as a child, but

very active. Now, her parents worry that

puberty and social anxiety are pushing her

down a dangerous path of poor choices in

managing her health. She does not yet need

to monitor her blood sugar and this is a

strong motivator for her to take her diet and

exercise routine more seriously.

KITCHEN SIMPLIFIEDSimplifying and enhancing the way we eat.

By building nutritional and behavioral

science into the kitchen we can make

better diet choices second nature for

everyone. Combining structural (smaller

plate sizes, physical layout of drawers,

refrigerator) and programming (fist-size

portions, 80% need - 20% want, 2-step

desserts) NUDGE‘s together to encourage

simpler,  tastier and healthier meals.

FITNESS NOW

Bringing fitness into everyday life.

There are many behavioral reasons for

working out like training, competing, health

or socializing.  It takes more than a fitness

platform of home treadmills, community

fitness centers, virtual fitness networks

or hiking and biking trails to drive exercise

JOIN USIn the Intelligent Home, we can collaborate to inspire a more healthful and active lifestyle - changing the daily

behaviors that impact a whole lifetime of wellbeing.

They say that the work it takes to turn a

house into a “home” is never complete; the

explorations taking place in the Intelligent

Home are no different.

We are in the early stages of exploring

how we can make the home the heart of

personal and family wellness – and we’d

like you to join us.

This is a call for making things happen.

We’re looking for partners, collaborators,

and contributors that can help us put

great ideas into action in the Intelligent

Home. We want to continue to innovate

– and to investigate – solutions that can

make healthy living an integrated part of

everyday living.

What insights can you share? What

future possibilities do you envision for

the Machado family? How can you help

inspire a whole lifetime of well-being with

a simple change in the way we live our

daily lives at home?
