We are busy at Lake Mary High School completing adjustments to the master schedule and planning for a successful 2016-2017 school year. I want to first thank our staff and parents for the great support they have given our students this past school year. Our students have maintained a high level of academic focus where once again Lake Mary High School was an “A” rated school in the Florida High School Accountability Program. Clearly there is a strong focus on academic excellence and this shows in many ways beyond this letter grade as well. The support of PTSA, SAC, the Athletic Boosters, as well as many other booster clubs have made a tremendous difference and have helped our students and staff achieve at a high level. The Lake Mary High School community continues to set the standard for which others aspire, and we are so proud to continue to work hand in hand with you as we jointly serve your students! We offer our final congratulations to our graduating class, the Class of 2016. We are so proud of all they have done to help continue the outstanding traditions of academic, athletic, and arts excellence here at Lake Mary High School. This class truly lived up to our school’s motto: “Lake Mary High School…We Are RAMNATION!This senior class earned more than $2.0 million dollars in scholarship money, and we know this money will continue to flow in throughout the summer as well as this is money before we calculate Bright Futures. I’m proud to say that this class had 141 Honor Grads or students with a 4.0 GPA or higher! Highlighting this class continued academically with 2 National Merit Finalists and 8 National Merit Commended Students! For the third consecutive year and the thirteenth time in our school’s thirty-five year history, Lake Mary High School is the Seminole Athletic Conference Champions or the school with the overall highest ranking in all sports in Seminole County. We will miss this class, and we wish them all the very best in their future endeavors. But their departure opens the door for another great group of RAMS to step up and take on the challenge of extending that tradition of academic, athletic, and arts excellence! We know the Class of 2016 will meet that challenge head on! We also say “Good-Bye” to four of our faculty members who depart Lake Mary High School and retired at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. Please join me as we congratulate our retirees: Media Specialist – Lisa Hollingsworth, Director of Guidance – Debbie Mahany, Computer Science Teacher – Sandy McCready, Athletic Director – Doug Peters, Guidance Counselor – Marilyn Tango, Drafting Teacher – Bill Whalen, ESOL Teacher – Linda Wheeler, NJROTC Instructor – Commander Wertenberger, and Assistant Principal – Walt Morgan who are all retiring after more than 270 years of combined service to young people in Seminole County. Lake Mary High School will certainly miss them all, and we wish them nothing but the very best in their new endeavors. Thank you, and good luck to all of them.

Principal’s MessageDear Parents and Students:

We hope this newsletter finds you enjoying your summer. We are busy at Lake Mary High School completing adjustments to the master schedule and planning for a successful 2016-2017 school year. I want to first thank our staff and parents for the great support they have given our students this past school year.

This class truly lived up to our school’s motto: “Lake Mary High School…We Are RAMNATION!” This senior class earned more than $2.0 million dollars in scholarship money, and we know this money will continue to flow in throughout the summer as well as this is money before we calculate Bright Futures. “Principal’s Message” continues...

“Lake Mary High School…We are RAMNation!”

As we wish all the best to our retirees allow me to wish all the very best to Assistant Principal, Ms. Colleen Windt, who will be transferring to Lake Howell High School beginning July 2016. Ms. Windt has been a key administrator here at Lake Mary for the last five years where she has supervised the math, science, social studies, world language, and career and technical education departments. Her rich contributions as a leader have helped elevate our school in countless ways and now we wish her nothing but the very best as she heads off to become a part of Lake Howell High School’s administrative team and the school as a whole. Her leadership will be missed, and we are grateful for all that she has done. Please join me in wishing her all the very best!

Congratulations to our students and staff for their outstanding work this year in preparation for the FSA 9th and 10th grade assessments in writing and in reading. Other assessments that our students and teachers worked hard to prepare for included End-of-Course exams in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Biology, US History, and Advanced Placement Exams. This year brought about some incredible achievements, and we are proud of the hard work and dedication to excellence displayed by your students and our teachers.

I wish to extend my sincere appreciation for the commitment and support that has been demonstrated by our parents and community. I especially wish to thank our PTSA Board and PTSA President, Ms. Shewell Smith, School Advisory Council (SAC) and SAC President, Mr. Joe Inbornone, our Athletic Booster Club and Athletic Booster President, Mr. Mark D’Agostino, and finally our Band Booster Club, and Band Booster President, Ms. Patricia Sigman for their dedication to the students, faculty and staff of Lake Mary High School. We could never achieve the results we do without their hard work and effort.

We urge you to make sure you and your student are aware of all of the pre-school information and deadlines as well as orientation dates/times contained in this newsletter. You should note that we will once again have a separate student orientation on Monday, August 1st, for our incoming freshmen to make their transition easier and less stressful. We will have combined orientation on Tuesday, August 2nd, for our sophomore, junior, and senior students. Also, mark down Thursday, August 25th, at 6:30pm, for Open House. There are several other important dates and details in this newsletter. Read it carefully and make sure your student meets all appropriate deadlines. Also, keep checking our website http://www.lakemaryhs.scps.k12.fl.us/ for more information as we will periodically update the site throughout the summer.

As we prepare to celebrate our 36th Year of Lake Mary High School we recognize that the educational landscape continues to change often times quicker than we can keep up with it. We continue to face a changing environment in public education and at times challenges to our budget, and our staff is working as hard as possible to insure that quality instruction and world class academics, athletics, and arts excellence remain our priority.

Personally it is a privilege and honor to serve each and every one of you as Principal of the greatest high school in Seminole County, and I strive to do everything possible to continue our growth as a leading school in this district. Lake Mary High School is an amazing school because of the great teachers, supportive parents, and the best students anywhere. GO RAMS!

Sincerely,

Michael C. KotkinPrincipal

4page Attendance Policy

Regular attendance provides students the opportunity to participate in many integral learning activities, such as class discussions, group experiences, fieldtrips, guest speakers, and direct instruction, which cannot be simulated or replicated with written work. Therefore, with the goal of promoting student achievement and increasing the likelihood of success, the Seminole County Public Schools has adopted a uniform Attendance Policy that consists of the following components:

I. Compulsory AttendanceA student enrolled in Seminole County Public Schools who is under the age of 16 is required to attend school regularly during the entire school year. It is the legal responsibility of the parent to ensure student attendance, unless the student is 16 years of age or older and has filed a formal declaration to terminate school enrollment with the Board.

II. School Attendance DefinedStudents are considered to be in attendance when they are at school or participating in school-sponsored activities (fieldtrips, senior lunch etc.). A student who misses 10% or more of a class is absent, this includes arriving late and leaving early. Students are not penalized for missing class due to a late bus or for guidance, discipline, or administrative appointments.

III. Student Attendance RecordedTeachers are required to maintain an official record of student attendance each day by class period of instruction. It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of their absences. All attendance can be viewed through Skyward. If an error is detected, the student needs to speak with the teacher immediately.

IV. School Notification on Day of AbsenceOn the day of a student’s absence, school personnel will make a good faith effort to notify the parent/guardian of the absence through our nightly, automatic call system.

V. Parent Verification of AbsenceOn the day a student returns to school, in compliance with the procedures established at the school, parents/guardians are expected to provide documentation of the reason for a student’s absence. This must be turned in within the first 5 days after the absence.

VI. Excused Absences DefinedThe Principal or designee shall determine if a student’s absence from school is excused or unexcused. An absence will be recorded as excused for each day a student is not in attendance for any of the following reasons:

1. Medical treatment provided by a licensed physician-via official physician original document.

2. Observance of religious practices or a religious holiday.

3. Law enforcement order or court subpoena.

4. Death of a family member-via death certificate, funeral program, obituary, etc.

5. Traffic accident that directly involved the student-via accident report.

6. College visits for Junior and Seniors- 2 days per year via official document.

VII. Unexcused Absences DefinedAbsence from class for any reason other than those identified in Section VI shall be unexcused. In addition, the following conditions shall result in an absence being recorded as unexcused:

A. No Documentation of Reason for AbsenceStudent absences that are not verified according to the procedures established at the school for documenting the reasons for a student’s absence (Section V).

B. Vacations/Personal Family TimeAll absences from school due to vacation or personal family time are unexcused. Parents must submit to the attendance office, in writing, requests for pre-arranged absences due to vacation or personal family time if they wish to obtain, in advance, the classwork that will be missed during the nonattendance. Teachers may, but are not required to, provide class assignments to students in advance. When such arrangements are made in advance, assignments are due on the day the student returns to school.

Student will lose credit for class once they reach the 10th unexcused absence in a semester, regardless of a passing grade.

Thanks Lake Mary High School RAMNATIONThanks Lake Mary High School RAMNATION for all of the great times and years since 1981. Not many can say that, only very few of us left from the beginning. What Mr. Don Reynolds and SCPS started way back when was a dynasty, starting with the first Theme “The Beginning of the Best” continuing in year 2 with “The Best is Yet to Be” and finally in the 3rd year simply “The BEST”, but continuing the 4th year with “The Best and Getting Better”. And LMHS RAMNATION has been getting better and better all of the time, every year, since then. May the Traditions continue now in 2016-17, 35 years later. LMHS RAMNATION is a Family, made up of all of the students, Alumni, Teachers and Staff, Parents, and the Communities. I can’t say when it was my best year teaching, coaching, or being an administrator. I loved it all. The Students, Staff, Parents. Thank you all for a great part of my life in my career as an Educator, The cornerstone and foundation of careers, 36 years’ worth. Carry on RAMNATION, produce, profit, succeed. Stay Great! Work hard, keep focused, be unselfish, have integrity and honor. Remember the Morgan Minutes “Manners will get you where money won’t and can’t” and “Wrong is Wrong even if everybody does it, and Right is Right even if you’re the only one doing it!”. Aim at your target RAMNATION and you’ll hit something. God Bless. Walt Morgan, 1981-2016, Retired and moving on.

9pageCredit ReinstatementStudents lose credit for class once they reach the 10th unexcused absence in a semester, regardless of a passing grade.

We offer the opportunity for students to reinstate their credit by making up missed time due to absences. In order to do this, the following must be agreed upon:

1. All parent notes must be used before time can be made up.2. Receive a passing grade in the course that was denied credit.3. You may not bank time for future use.

Should you choose to take advantage of this opportunity, the following options are available for you:

Attend Saturday School for three hours**.Attend Tuesday and Thursday tutoring for two hours.

Attend Wednesday detention for an hour**.

** Student cannot serve makeup time at Saturday School or Detention if they are already serving for a disciplinary reason.

For any of the above opportunities, the student must be in attendance for the entire session to receive any credit. By doing this, he/she will receive the following number of hours toward credit reinstatement:

Saturday School – 3 hours Tutoring – 2 hoursWednesday Detention – 1 hour

The student may choose any one of (or combination of) the opportunities listed above to get their credit reinstated. In order to receive credit, the student must sign in and write “credit reinstatement” next to their name every time they are making up time.

If you need further information please contact Dr. Fuhrer at (407) 320-9511.

FSA Portal The FSA Portal for student and families is available to you as a resource as you prepare to take the Florida Standards Assessment. The portal includes practice tests, frequently asked questions and understanding the FSA reports to name a few. The link to this important resource can be found at the Lake Mary Website http://www.lakemaryhs.scps.k12.fl.us/ under the parents tab.

What is Positive Behavior Support?Positive Behavior Support is a different way of handling discipline. Because students come from different backgrounds and cultures, they may view behavior in their own unique ways. When a child misbehaves, LMHS views it as a skill deficit; as a result, students are taught appropriate school behaviors and expectations. Consequences are still given for inappropriate behavior; however, students are also rewarded when they display appropriate/positive behavior.

Mu Alpha ThetaMu Alpha Theta is a national math honor society for high schools. We provide service to our school by offering free math tutoring to Lake Mary students on Monday’s after school in room 1-204. We also encourage our members to participate in math competitions during the year, although it is not mandatory. The requirements for membership are as follows: You must have a 3.5 average for all Math courses. Seniors who have been active for two years will earn a cord to wear with pride at graduation. For information about our first meetings, please pay attention closely to the announcements. This fall, we are looking forward to the following events: Fall Welcome Social, Interschool Test, fundraisers, tutoring, and the Dostal/Nunn Tests. We will participate in Saturday math competitions beginning in January. A list of practice opportunities is available.
