FEATURED ENTERTAINMENT

SPEAKER: CECILIA TUCKER Rev. Cecilia Tucker attended a Lake Junaluska youth event last summer where she quickly won over everyone around her with her warmth, wit, and feats of physical strength! She has served as a youth pastor and a lead pastor at multiple churches. For many years, youth across Florida read her “Indomitable Teens” advice series in the media and listened to her radio advice show where she and teen hosts answered questions about bullying, eating disorders, adoption, social alienation, peer pressure and more. In her spare time, she plays tennis, Pickleball, bikes, hikes, kayaks, does boot camp, and plays with her King Charles Cavalier, Izzy.

BAND: THE ADVICE The Advice formed in 2003 and their name, The Advice, has strong Biblical ties. It refers to a passage from Exodus in which Moses' father-in-law is telling him he'll need help in his mission and to appoint leaders over the tribes of Israel. The band feels that life can't be lived alone - that we all need help and advice to get through difficult times. Their uplifting message is accompanied by a popular contemporary Christian sound that appeals to youths and adults alike.

Your gift will allow Rise Against Hunger the ability to serve those in need around the globe. SAFE SANCTUARIES POLICY Lake Junaluska Safe Sanctuaries for Youth and Children: To insure the safety of all youth and children participating in Lake Junaluska events, the following procedures have been set in place in accordance with the Safe Sanctuaries policies of the United Methodist Church. Participants are expected to comply with these guidelines while at Lake Junaluska in an effort to keep youth and children safe.

• Lake Junaluska Programming staff members who work with youth and children have undergone Safe Sanctuaries

training, including background checks, and First Aid and CPR instruction. Church groups attending events at Lake Junaluska should follow the Safe Sanctuaries Policies of their church or organization. This should include background checks for all chaperones. (More information is available in Safe Sanctuaries for Youth and Children by Joy Melton, at www.gbod.org, or through your Annual Conference.)

• The TWO ADULT RULE will be incorporated into small groups and classroom settings for all youth and children’s

events sponsored by Lake Junaluska. This rule states that two unrelated adults will be in the room or vehicle at all times. No child or youth should be alone with one adult at any time. When two leaders are not available for small groups, doors will remain open and a roaming monitor will be available or groups will meet in an open space within sight and sound of other groups.

• Adults chaperoning youth should be 5 years older than the oldest youth. College students working with youth

events will be supervised by and work with other adults that meet this age requirement. • Youth Groups are responsible for their youth at all times, especially during free time, during meals, and

overnight. Lake Junaluska is not responsible for assigning roommates. Youth Groups are asked to send in a rooming list prior to arrival. Adults and youth should not share lodging unless the adult is a parent of that youth. (This applies to hotel style rooms where participants are sharing double beds.) Youth Leaders are responsible for communicating with parents, keeping medical forms and obtaining permission forms.

Procedures are compiled using Safe Sanctuaries for Youth and Children by Joy Melton (Discipleship Resources) and the Western North Carolina Conference Safe Sanctuaries “Basic Operating Procedures.”

CANCELLATION POLICY

Cancellations made 15 days or greater from the first night’s lodging receive a full refund minus $40 per person processing fee. Hiking and Walking Trails Western North Carolina is known for some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the United States. Lake Junaluska is just a short drive from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Plus, there are a wide variety of walking and hiking trails, from the 2.3 mile loop around Lake Junaluska itself to nearby attractions like Sliding Rock and Waterrock Knob.

Waynesville & Maggie Valley If your group would like to stay closer to home, exploring the nearby towns of Waynesville or Maggie Valley is a great way to experience the local flavor. Check at the front desk of the Bethea Welcome Center for lists of dining and shopping options or stop into an area museum. Aside from the Wheels Through Time museum in Maggie Valley, there are two on-site museums at Lake Junaluska, including the World Methodist Museum and the Heritage Center of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church.

YOUR SKI RESPONSIBILITY CODE Skiing/snowboarding can be enjoyed in many ways. At ski areas you may see people using alpine, snowboard, telemark, cross country or other specialized equipment, such as that used by disabled or other skiers/snowboarders. Regardless of how you decide to enjoy the slopes, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk in skiing/snowboarding that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Observe the code listed below and share with other skiers/snowboarders the responsibility for an overall great experience. • Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. • People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. • You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. • Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. • Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment. • Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. • Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. KNOW THE CODE. IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. This is a partial list. Be safety conscious. Officially endorsed by: NATIONAL SKI AREAS ASSOCIATION NORTH CAROLINA’S SKIER SAFETY ACT A skier and / or passenger shall have the following responsibilities: • To know the range of his own abilities to negotiate any ski slope or trail and to ski within the limits of such ability; • To maintain control of his speed and course at all times when skiing and to maintain a proper lookout so as to be able to avoid other skiers and visible objects; • To stay clear of snow grooming equipment, all vehicles, lift towers, signs and any other equipment on the ski slopes and trails; • To heed all posted information and other warnings and to refrain from acting in a manner which may cause or contribute to the injury of the skier or others; • To wear retention straps, ski brakes, or other devices to prevent runaway skis; • Before beginning to ski from a stationary position or before entering a ski slope or trail from the side, to avoid moving skiers already on the ski slope or trail; • To not move uphill on any passenger tramway or use any ski slope or trail while such person’s ability to do so is impaired by the consumption of alcohol or by the use of any narcotic or other drug or while such person is under the influence of alcohol or any narcotic or any drug; • If involved in a collision with another skier or person, to not leave the vicinity of the collision before giving his name and current address to an employee of the ski area operator, a member of the ski patrol, or the other skier or the person with whom the skier collided, except in some cases when medical treatment is required, in which case, said information shall be provided as soon as practical after the medical treatment has been obtained. WEATHER INFORMATION FOR GROUPS SKIING AT CATALOOCHEE

PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS YOU AND YOUR GROUP MAY ENCOUNTER WHILE VISITING CATALOOCHEE SKI AREA. IF YOUR GROUP IS COMING IN A CHARTER BUS AND YOU WILL BE TAKING IT TO THE SKI AREA- YOU WILL WANT TO LET US KNOW SO WE CAN ARRANGE AN AREA FOR YOU AT THE SKI RESORT. YOU WILL GET TO AN AREA WHERE YOU CAN PARK AND THEN YOU WOULD BE SHUTTLED FROM THERE WHEN NECESSARY. YOU ARE IN A WINTER ENVIRONMENT AT AN ELEVATION OF 4200 FEET AND THE WEATHER HERE MAY BE A GREAT DEAL DIFFERENT THAN WEATHER ENCOUNTERED ON THE VALLEY FLOOR. ONE KIND OF WEATHER YOU MAY ENCOUNTER HERE IS FROZEN PRECIPITATION IN THE FORM OF SNOW OR FREEZING RAIN. FREEZING RAIN AND/OR SNOW WILL QUICKLY CHANGE THE CONDITION OF THE ACCESS ROAD AND WILL MAKE LEAVING THE MOUNTAIN DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL THE ROAD IS CLEARED. GROUP LEADERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN FOR GETTING THEIR GROUPS OFF THE MOUNTAIN IN THE EVENT OF SNOW OF FREEZING WEATHER. WE ENCOURAGE ALL GROUPS TO BRING FOURWHEEL DRIVE “CHASE” VEHICLES THAT MAY BE USED TO SHUTTLE GROUPS OFF THE MOUNTAIN WHEN BUSSES OR VANS DECIDE TO LEAVE. CATALOOCHEE DOES NOT OFFER ANY TYPE OF SHUTTLE SERVICE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE MOUNTAIN AND WE DO NOT REFUND TICKETS FOR ANYONE HAVING TO LEAVE THE MOUNTAIN BEFORE THE END OF THEIR SKIING SESSION. IF IT STARTS SNOWING WE ENCOURAGE BUSSES AND VANS TO GO TO THE RANCH PARKING LOT (LOCATED ONE MILE FROM THE SKI AREA, AT THE TOP OF THE PAVED ROAD) RIGHT AWAY AND THEN GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE MOUNTAIN BEFORE THE ROAD BECOMES SLICK. IT IS IN THIS CASE THAT THE “CHASE” VEHICLE CAN BE USED TO GET INDIVIDUALS TO AND FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE MOUNTAIN. ABOVE ALL, PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY AND DON’T TAKE CHANCES ON THE ROAD. AN EARLY REACTION TO FROZEN PRECIPITATION IS THE BEST PLAN.
