Lafayette Urban Ministry
Annual Report 2020
I n April 2020, I came to this community thinking Lafayette Urban Ministry
was a good non-profit organization doing many compassionate things. I know
now that LUM is a whole lot more than that.
LUM is a beautiful and diverse family.
People from multiple generations, ethnicities, incomes, cultures, and faiths
function at LUM as a family with a mission. There is a sincere love and a
compelling purpose in this family. The LUM family includes volunteers, donors,
staff, and clients.
LUM is a vital resource.
After almost 50 years of day and night ministry in this community, LUM has
become a trusted and necessary resource to thousands of people in Greater
Lafayette.
LUM is a key community partner.
LUM offers excellent services addressing housing, children, immigration, financial assistance, nutrition and social
justice. Yet the needs of the community are far greater than any one organization can meet. LUM partners with a wide
array of other organizations and refers clients for clothing, mental health, addiction recovery, judicial, medical and
other needs.
LUM is resilient.
The challenges of 2020 did not cause LUM to halt its work of mercy and justice. The challenges of 2020 simply caused
LUM to adapt and evolve. LUM never missed a night or day of assisting the most vulnerable members of our community.
If you are reading this report, most likely you are part of my beloved LUM family. Thank you for your interest and
support. As you read this 2020 Annual Report, I pray that a healthy sense of pride, belonging, and gratitude wells up in
your heart. There is so much to celebrate from 2020, in spite of all difficulties.
All glory and thanks to God. “Praise God from whom all blessings flow.…”
2 LUM Annual Report 2020
P overty is the greatest thief. More than depriving a neighbor of food or shelter or warmth, it steals away hope. While other thieves may take away the past, poverty steals the future and self-respect.
Lafayette Urban Ministry is in the business of restor ing human dig-nity. Through voluntary efforts and contributions, we give back the hope, the future, and the self respect which all God’s people need and deserve.
Ours is a Christian ministry that welcomes congregations and people of all faiths. We give witness to God’s saving love & prophetic power by loving neighbors, seeking justice, empow-ering the least among us, and renewing the Church’s social ministry.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow....

Dear Friend of LUM,
Letter from the President of the LUM Board of Directors
LUM Annual Report 2020 3
Bells Rang for Jubilee Christmas
Bells rang on Sat-
urday, December
12, 2020, from
churches across the
county in celebra-
tion of the 40th
annual Lafayette
Urban Ministry
Jubilee Christmas
program. Thirty
churches and
numerous individuals, businesses
and clubs provided for 526 local
households, impacting 1,499 lo-
cal children.
Jubilee Christmas is designed to let
mom and dad be the heroes, rather
than providing gifts directly to the
children or having volunteers de-
liver toys to the home. Jubilee
Christmas strengthens families by
supporting the important role of
parents at Christmas time.
At 25 different Jubilee Christmas
events, each family received toys,
books, clothing and stocking stuff-
ers for their children plus a food
card, gift wrap, homemade Christ-
mas cookies and a restaurant gift
card. A program of this size is a
real benefit to our local retail econ-
omy. Gifts and food for Jubilee
Christmas are purchased locally,
and gift cards are redeemed local-
ly. As a result of this program,
LUM will see fewer requests for
emergency rent and utility assis-
tance in January and February.
If you participated in or made a
donation to Jubilee Christmas
2020, THANK YOU!
It is my honor to serve as President of the
LUM Board of Directors.
Each member of our Board represents
their church partnering with LUM to
tackle basic human needs and uplift peo-
ple in Tippecanoe County.
Lafayette Urban Ministry creates a
larger vehicle for making a difference in
Greater Lafayette than an individual
church can make by itself.
I am thankful for LUM staff, donors, vol-
unteers and Board members who work
together to restore the hope and the self
respect which all people need and de-
serve.
As you review the LUM 2020 Annual
Report, I hope you are inspired to get
involved or increase your involvement to
advance the important work of Lafayette
Urban Ministry.
Thank you for your interest and support.
Sincerely,
Cheryl A. Fowler President, Board of Directors
