Hello Ladies,

And welcome to the inaugural Ladies Who…event taking place in this magnificent and historic setting.

I’m sure that when some of you noted the venue for today’s event, there was some intrigue and puzzlement about our choice but it is a most fitting place to begin what is hoped to become an annual event in the social calendar for the North East.

Why fitting? The Discovery Museum, originally the Municipal Museum of Science and Industry, was the first UK science museum outside of London. In other words, Newcastle broke the mould, they did something different, something that grew into the vast cultural exhibition you can see here today. Well, I am also breaking the mould. As the first Lady Patron in the North East, I am proud to host this event, an event which will glitter with the passion and energy of the North.

I am honoured to welcome Jeff Banks CBE, who tirelessly assists The Princes Trust as an Ambassador and who will speak to us about his work and share his views about fashion and his life and career.

Hot on the heels of Jeff, we will be treated to the very best from the 5th generation, family owned North Eastern fashion house, Barbour. A company which remains true to its core values as a family business and which espouses the unique values of the British countryside and brings the qualities of wit, grit and glamour to its beautifully functional clothing.

The fashion continues in exclusive cutting edge style with Cruise, now recognised as one of the UK’s leading independent luxury retailers with a fantastic reputation for iconic international designer collections. Prepare to be inspired by two local women – Prince’s Trust Young Ambassadors – who, with the assistance of the Trust have turned their lives around and made a difference to the region.

From inspiration to magnetism! Get ready for the singing secret that the stars have kept to themselves. The Magnets are a vocal group with a reputation for spicing up the parties of supermodels, heads of state and billionaires with their blend of razor-sharp harmonies and jaw dropping beat boxing and they are here to get us rocking today. Of course we will be guided through the whole day by Matt Lee Alliston our MC and auctioneer for the things money can’t buy.

Ladies Who…Rock are the embodiment of strength, beauty and resilience. The committee have demonstrated these qualities in their tireless work to make this day fabulous. I am indebted to the numerous individuals and organisations who have contributed time and resources to make this happen. Enjoy the day, embrace generosity and rock the North East.

The Company was set up in 2001 to bring together the energy of three North East movement artists keen to share skills, expertise and visions to create new work. We began offering sessions and short projects in Newcastle and North Tyneside and things grew from there…

In the ten years that followed, we extended our skills and visions and now offer a range of projects, training and performances throughout the region and beyond.

As an independent company based in an office in Dance City, Newcastle upon Tyne, we work throughout the region, from North and West Northumberland to Teeside, County Durham and the coast, with occasional tours and residencies elsewhere in the UK and Ireland. Like the people we work with, we are fluent in the language of movement and we welcome projects in any country and language.

We offer regular sessions for families at Dance City in Newcastle and at the Alnwick Gardens.

Steve Morton – Jazz Vocalist & Pianist

Originally from Grangemouth, Central Scotland, Steve Morton is a professional Vocalist, Pianist, Vocal Coach and Musical Director. Now based in Glasgow, Steve has worked across the UK in a variety of musical settings and ensembles for well over a decade. He has given performances at The Gateshead International Jazz Festival in 2010 and 2011, the Stockton Jazz Festival in 2010 and for organisations including the BBC, Edinburgh’s Radio Forth, and the Royal Air Force.

During his teenage years, Steve was fortunate enough to play for a summer with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland as an Alto Saxophonist, before deciding to concentrate on study and performance as a vocalist and pianist. However despite his love for music, Steve initially went on to study journalism at The University of Stirling, gaining a B.A. (Hons) in Media Studies. During this time, Steve continued to perform constantly as a vocalist and pianist for various ensembles and projects, and it wasn’t long before he decided to return to higher education to further his musical skills.

As such in 2008, Steve moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne to study on the B.Mus Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music programme at The Sage, Gateshead. On completion of this, he achieved a First Class Honours degree with firsts in all disciplines. Currently, Steve is Founder and Musical Director of Voice of the Toon, an adult contemporary vocal group that began in Newcastle in 2011, and which now has a group in Glasgow. The group has received fantastic reviews having performed at venues such as The Cluny, Newcastle, and for private events to audiences of celebrity guests. Steve is also the Founder of Voicecraft Studio, a Glasgow based voice consultancy in which he offers his services as a vocal coach, performer and musical director. Furthermore, Steve is soon to open a music centre in Glasgow, offering one to one tuition across a variety of instruments, as well as workshops and ensembles such as choirs, big bands and various popular music groups. Alison Morgan - Patron

Throughout my business career, success has been determined by motivation and inspiration. Motivation is the force which determines our behaviour, and gives us incentive and a reason to act. Inspiration is the creative thought which is the stimulus.

As a result of my passion, determination and formative influences, I have been fortunate to motivate and be motivated, inspire and be inspired. As a result, my life is productive, positive and fulfilled. I have had the pleasure to see other people grow in confidence, principle and purpose and go on to succeed in their own right.

And so when The Prince’s Trust honoured me by seeking my patronage and allowing me to be the first female Patron in the North East of England, I was determined to utilise my business and personal qualities to support the trust wholeheartedly.Life can be demanding, challenging and complex whatever your age but for some young people in our region, the path you walk only leads downhill. I have seen what this can do to young people and how with the help of The Trust they can be supported to turn around, walk tall, and step by step move in the right direction.

8 .

Page 11: Ladies Who Rock Event Brochure

Lynn BushellThroughout my chosen career, I have come into contact with people of all ages, abilities and from all walks of life. Oftentimes our paths have crossed because they have been disadvantaged by ill health, developmental ability or by the narrow beliefs and attitudes of society. This has been my working life and my passion for the last 32 years.

More recently, I made a big decision to stray from that very well-trodden path and was fortunate to come into contact with an amazing group of women with varying interests, ages and backgrounds but with a common goal. Despite our diversity, we all feel passionately about the North East, its culture and its future and wanted to make a difference.

Ann CrombieOn retiring from the Fashion Industry after 30 years of retailing, manufacturing and consulting I was approached by The Prince’s Trust to join their team of mentors. Only then did I discover what an important and diverse role The Prince’s Trust has to play in the future of so many young people and I feel honoured to have been able to play a small part in some of their progress.

Without The Prince’s Trust so many of them would not have been given the opportunity and support or had the confidence to make it in their chosen field, particularly in the unsettled financial climate that we live in.

I am therefore delighted to be part of the new fundraising committee which I am sure will reach its set goals with your support.

Finding your strengths, abilities and a valued place in society is a huge task for everyone and one which is epitomised by the work of The Prince’s Trust. They need help from likeminded constructive people to make that difference. And so, in partnership with The Prince’s Trust I have worked together with the Ladies Who...team to support the young people of the North East through the staging and proceeds of Ladies Who Rock. Together we believe we are Ladies Who…..not only rock but will also make a difference to the future of the North East.

9 .

Page 12: Ladies Who Rock Event Brochure

Chris GrayI was educated at St Anthony’s girls school in Sunderland before joining the Civil Service. I spent 25 years with the service in many departments before moving to the Trust in 2002. My current role is Head of Private Sector Fundraising.

The Trust aims to support over 4,000 young people in this region this year by raising over £2 million. The Trust raises funds through patronage, trusts, events , individuals and corporate support. Events like the Ladies Who…enable the Trust to continue its work and make a difference to the future of this region.

Laura RoseMy involvement with fundraising began at an early age as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, raising funds for our schools sponsored child. Through Duke of Edinburough, I took part in a mountain biking expedition to the Tibetan Plateau aged 17, which involved raising £2,500 through events and sponsorship. Following this, I studied French and German at Durham University which provided me with the essential requirements to work for international organisations including Nike, IBM and P&G, looking after their German clients. However, my real passion was to pursue a career in charity, and this began with working for The Percy Hedley Foundation and COCO. I was fortunate to then join Newcastle Gateshead Initiative developing their corporate membership.

These opportunities led to my current role at The Prince’s Trust and I have never looked back. I believe wholeheartedly in the mission of The Trust. We have some fantastic supporters in the region helping to maximise fundraising income to ensure the charity can continue its work in the North East. The Ladies Who...team typify the commitment and dedication required to support The Trust in its work to change the lives of young people in our region. This event will rock Newcastle!

Page 13: Ladies Who Rock Event Brochure

Helen RoseberryThis is my first event supporting The Prince’s Trust, when I was asked to come on board The Ladies Who...Committee

Raising funds in aid of the Princes Trust, it made me stop and evaluate my start in life and I know how lucky I have been, to have had love, stability and guidance throughout my whole life. I was always taught to apply myself in education, work hard and respect others at all times, be confident and believe in myself, and when you get knocked back, dust yourself down and get up and try again. Not everyone has been as fortunate as me.

The Trust is able to offer this to youngsters, to enable them to fulfil their full potential. Through opportunities to develop confidence, learn new skills, get into work and start businesses. The Prince’s Trust targets those not in education, employment or training; and those in or leaving care. Please support The Prince’s Trust and offer youngsters a chance in life.

Alex MorrisWhen I was asked to sit on the committee for this event, I did not hesitate even for one second in accepting what I see as a mere privilege.

I began my career as a very young woman and I know that I would have not been able to start, never mind carry on, if it had not been for the practical help and emotional support of particular individuals, Alison Morgan being one of those people. I know I was fortunate in having access to such contacts but not everyone is. Many young people have the skills and determination to succeed yet they lack the means, others lack the confidence as they are not surrounded by the sort of environment that can nurture and encourage their aspirations. I can only see myself as privileged for having had access to all of these and working in aid of The Prince’s Trust is a little something that I can do to impact someone else’s life, the way mine has been through the years. It’s my time to ‘Pay It Forward’.

Jeff Banks

We are honoured to have Jeff Banks as our guest speaker for the day. Jeff’s career in fashion and design spans several decades. He was the co-founder of the Warehouse chain in 1970 and became a household name in the 1980s through the popular TV programmes Pebble Mill and the Clothes Show. He is renowned for his creative British design, is the creator of the British Fashion Council and has numerous fashion and honorary awards to his name.

In 1996, he created his own corporate-wear design company Incorporatewear that has won many design awards as a result of Jeff’s designs.

In December 2009, Jeff was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List by being made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). The citation was for services to fashion and charitable work.

His work in the field of fashion continues with recent designs for the England Football team and the London 2012 Olympic bid.

Jeff is a great supporter of The Prince’s Trust and we are thrilled he can join us for this special event.

About The Prince’s Trust

The Prince’s Trust is a youth charity that helps inspire young lives.

We give practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation. We work with 13-30 year-olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. Last year almost 80 per cent of the young people that were supported went in to employment, further education or training.

Many people think that The Prince’s Trust is a rich charity because of its name. However this isn’t the case – the charity’s President, HRH The Prince of Wales, generously attends fundraising events and visits the work on the ground. The Trust relies on fundraising from a variety of different sources such as today’s event to continue its vital work.

In the North East last year we supported 4,000 young people through a range of programmes including personal development and mentoring support. There is however still more to do, we estimate that there are approximately 70,000 young people in the region who need our support and this number is growing.

Currently we are only able to help a small percentage of these young people.

The challenge is considerable but The Prince’s Trust makes real and lasting contributions to the lives of young people. We help them to believe in themselves and get their lives moving in a positive direction.

Matt Lee-Alliston

Matt has worked with the likes of Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight and is looking forward to working with “The Ladies Who Rock”!

Matt, owner of the Panto Company based in Northumberland, has been performing since the tender age of 6. As a very young man he appeared on the world famous Palladium stage in The Pirates of Penzance and the musical Buddy working with household names such as Wayne Sleep and Dora Bryan.

After recording with Riverside Studios in Germany, Matt became Children’s Production Manager for the Rank Group UK where he wrote and performed alongside Noel Edmonds, Bobby Davro, Marty Wilde, Alvin Stardust and the Bay City Rollers. In 1998, Matt became Director of Entertainment USA, where the performers were legendary. Gladys Knight, Kool and the Gang, Smokey Robinson and Ben E King were all performers in Matt’s lavish shows.

He returned to the UK to put down roots for his young family and together with his wife started their company with a grant from The Prince’s Trust. The company, which is part of The Stage and Production House, produces shows across the UK for companies such as Centre Parks, McDonald Hotels, Village Hotels and the Copthorne chain. Beginning in November 2012, their recently opened USA office is starting a tour of children’s shows.

Ladies Who…are privileged to have Matt as Master of Ceremonies for this rocking good day.

Nyla and Saima’s Story

Nyla and Saima both studied Beauty and are very passionate about this career. Since qualifying, they have found it really hard to gain employment. When they have found work, they have not always been happy about the constraints and work ethics around their role.

At the beginning of this year, they decided that they would look at going into business together to start their own unique beauty business called ‘Eye Candi’.

Not only were they unsure of how to go about starting their business, they did not have the necessary funds or knowledge. They then heard about the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme and signed up for the course. The Enterprise Programme aims to help unemployed young people to start their own businesses through the provision of start up funding and mentoring. The programme supports young people to choose and achieve the outcome which is best for them. It also helps those ready to start a business, to plan and test their ideas more thoroughly, improving the quality of their business propositions and therefore increasing their chances of success.

Starting a successful business is a challenge – it requires skills and experience – and it is not right for everybody. The programme therefore focuses on providing flexible support to all the young people it works with, helping them to explore options and choose outcomes which are best for them; it aims to add value to every young person who seeks help, but only financial support to those who are confident that self employment is the right choice and have proved themselves to be capable and their business ideas to be viable.

The Enterprise Programme has made Nyla and Saima all the more determined to succeed at their business and they also signed up to become Young Ambassadors. To date they have made great progress with the foundation of their business and their business plan is almost complete. They have been marketing their ideas and have had really positive feedback. They hope to go live within the next few months. We are grateful that Nyla and Saima are joining us for this very special event to share their story.

They are the singing secret that the stars have kept to themselves, the vocal group with a word-of-mouth reputation for spicing up the parties of supermodels, heads of state and billionaires with their blend of razor-sharp harmonies and jaw dropping beatboxing. But now, after selling out London’s legendary Roundhouse, a series of electrifying festival appearances and a starring role in the latest T-Mobile flash-mob advert The Magnets are emerging as one of the mustsee acts on the current British music scene.

What

Literally a ‘six-man sound machine’, The Magnets make all their music with their mouths alone, including the drums of vocal percussionist/beatboxer Andy Frost and the richly textured bass of Fraser Collins. However, this is no attempt to mimick instruments, but rather the blending of six distinctive voices to create a unique sound that rivals any band with guitars and keyboards.

Show Highlights

At the heart of The Magnets music lies a gift for extraordinary arrangements that radically restyle and subvert songs from artists as diverse as Kraftwerk and Beyoncé. Highlights include a sun soaked lounge version of Blur’s ‘Girls & Boys’, an adrelnaline-fuelled mash up of ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way’ by Lenny Kravitz and Fat Boy Slim’s ‘Weapon of Choice’ and the band’s trademark mega-medleys, currently a showstopping A – Z of movie themes from A-Team to Zulu. In concert, The Magnets marry musical sophistication with a road seasoned theatricality that suffuses their shows in imaginative choreography, engaging humour and plenty of audience participation.

The group’s third album, recorded with producer Julian Simmons (Guillemots, Anthony Johnson), channels the energy of their stage show into the studio, and turns the spotlight on to extraordinarily imaginative arrangements that radically restyle and subvert songs from artists as diverse as Kraftwerk and Beyonce.

All the sounds you will hear on ‘Gobsmacked’ are made with the human voice, including the drums of vocal percussionist Andy Frost and richly textured bass of Fraser Collins. In contrast to their previous albums ‘Giving It All That’ (EMI Liberty) and ‘Another Place’, this release eschews the studio-based comfort of multi-tracking to allow the individual voices of the band to emerge, inspired by the lo-fi experimentalism of a cappella releases from artists such as Bjork and Camille.
