Grade Components

• Attendance: Mandatory! Being absent or tardy for a laboratory section may result in not being permitted to participate in an activity (e.g., quiz) or have information repeated, possibly resulting in a score of “0” being recorded.


Grade Components (cont.)

• Safety Quiz: Worth 10 points and will cover important safety items and rules.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any student not scoring at least 8 points on the safety quiz shall not be permitted to participate in any laboratory activity. The student must repeat taking the quiz (a different version) until a minimum score of 8 is achieved.



• Quizzes: A series of seven (7) scheduled quizzes, worth 5 points each for a total of 35 points. The quizzes will cover the background reading material provided in the laboratory manual/handouts for the exercise(s) to be performed that day/week.

• Laboratory Reports: Worth a total of 65 points towards. Some will consist of the pages located at the end of each exercise. Others may also include report sheets provided by your laboratory instructor. Some reports will be due immediately, whereas others shall be randomly chosen for submission and must be submitted immediately when announced.



• Skills Tests: These exercises, worth a total of 35 points, are designed to assess the skill sets of students. Instructions are posted as PDF documents on the course web page.

• Learn Smart Laboratory Exercises: Students shall complete nine Learn Smart Laboratory Exercise on CONNECT, each worth 5 points (a total of 45 points towards your overall course grade)



• Laboratory Etiquette/Citizenship: This grade element, worth a total of 10 points, is a subjective assessment of collegiality, ability to follow instructions, neatness, etc.

• Laboratory Manual. There is no commercial lab manual to purchase this semester! All materials will be distributed for FREE!

• Index Cards. 3" x 5" index cards may be ruled or un-ruled and of any color. Larger or smaller cards are NOT acceptable. Squares of paper are NOT acceptable.

• Laboratory coat/smock. This item does not have to be an “official” lab coat. It can be any garment (e.g., old sweatshirt) which can be subjected to disposal.

• Protective eyewear. Regular glasses nor “side shields” qualify as sufficient eye protection. Students must obtain some sort of approved protective eyewear that can be worn at all times in the laboratory.

• Sharpie marker. Any color will suffice, although black or blue is preferred. This marker shall be used by students to write directly on glassware.


Laboratory Decorum

• Appropriate dress is REQUIRED. Students are expected to wear clothing that would be appropriate for working in a professional laboratory environment.• Following all safety rules is REQUIRED.• Disturbing (e.g., moving, using, etc.,) the

materials of others is PROHIBITED. If done intentionally, this is grounds for removal from the course and possible charges of academic dishonesty.

• The use of electronic items (e.g., cell phones) is absolutely PROHIBITED.• Collegiality and acting in a considerate

manner are EXPECTED. Students are expected to interact with one another in accord with the “Golden Rule” – that is, the principle of treating others as one would wish to be treated.


Potential Health Risks

• The possibility of acquiring an infection from laboratory activities is extremely low. • Yet, that does not mean the risk of infection

is non-existent.• Though unlikely, infections could occur

under non-standard and/or inappropriate practices as well as to persons having particular underlying health conditions.

• It is incumbent upon all students to follow all safety precautions!• If you have a documented health condition

that may make you susceptible to infection (e.g., immune dysfunction, pregnancy, etc.), please PRIVATELY contact Dr. Cooper.• A LIABILITY WAIVER is required from each

Each student enrolled in a microbiology laboratory at Youngstown State University must follow the following specific safety rules and procedures. YOU MUST KNOW THESE RULES AND PROCEDURES!!! Failure to comply may result in a student’s dismissal from one or more laboratory sessions.

• Keep note-taking practices separate from work with hazardous or infectious material.• Use proper transport vessels (test tube

racks) for moving cultures in the laboratory, and, when possible, store vessels containing cultures in a leak-proof container.• Use appropriate universal precautions with

all biological fluids.

It is imperative that biohazardous wastes be disposed in the appropriate manner described below. If you have a question regarding the proper disposal of an item, please ask your laboratory instructor/TA.YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES!!! Failure to comply may result in a student’s dismissal from one or more laboratory sessions.
