    Universal testing machines

    Use of Universal testing machine in the rubber and elastomer industry

    Universal testing machine is mainly used for measuring the tensile and tear properties of the vulcanized rubber and plastics in the rubber and elastomer industry.

    Test methods and standards (ASTM D412), are widely used in the rubber industryto determine tensile properties of vulcanized rubber. A dumbbell shaped rubber specimenis pulled in tension until rupture. Test data are recorded on 100% and 300% modulusvalues, tension set and set after back, peak and break load and elongation.

    The tear resistance of rubber material is also important to many application andtesting, according to ASTM D624 Test standard and a tensile test is performed on aspecially shaped sample. The resistance to tear is calculated from the maximum force andthickness of specimen. As described in ASTM D1564 standard, testing of foam materialsmay be done in compression and tension as well as tear. In compression testing, aspecified percent of compression in relating to the initial thickness is accomplished thenthe test load measured. The resulting force to compress the sample specific percentage is

    recorded. A tear resistance procedure is also applied with the materials tear resistanceexpressed as force per inch of thickness.

    Rubber tensile and tear testing methods are according to ASTM D412 and D624test methods, which can be fulfilled by this machine.

    Mooney Viscometer

    The Mooney viscometer measures the change in a rubber and plastic elastomerproperties over time, from uncured to scorch state. The specimen is physically deformedby a rotating platen which will determine changing viscosity at present temperatures.When the test is completed, the dies will automatically reset and allow for removal of thespecimen. With PID temperature controller you can assure that smooth and accurate datawill be taken through the test. The servo driven motors contribute to very accurate result;they are quite and require no maintenance. It is equipped with modular electrical boards,quick detachable upper and lower dies, and calibration via computer and auto hardwaredefect features. The unit is safe as it is equipped with a transparent arc shield.

    Din Abrasion Testing Unit

    The basic unit consists of the machine frame, drive system, sample holder aswell as other accessories. The abrasive drum, the trapezoidal spindle and a guide rodare pre installed on the machine frame and enables the lateral movement of thesample. The movable parts of the material are protected by a sturdy metal case. An

    integrated electric motor drives the drum and sample holder. The abrasion tester(DIN Abraser/Abrader) is also equipped with thermo-switch to protect the tester fromover heating. The sample holder is attached to a bracket which is automatically liftedfrom the abrasive sheet when the pre-selected abrasion distance has been completed.For the insertion or removal of samples, the bracket holding the sample holder can beswung upwards into a vertical position. This design allows for the sample projectionto be adjusted according to prescribed tolerance limits with the help of an adjustinggauge. When testing samples with high abrasion, the sample holder can be positioned

    so that only the left or right half of the rotating drum is used (= half of abrasiondistance). Exchangeable weights allows for the contact pressure force to be adjustedbetween 2,5 N and 20 N, depending on the type of material to be tested. The DINAbrasion tester (DIN Abraser / Abrader) can also do series of measurements withrotating samples.

    DIN Abrasion tester (DIN Abraser / Abrader) is very user friendly and doesnot require skilled personnel to be operated. The abrasion distance is easily selectedby an adjusting screw. The constant pressure on the sample is set by using a varietyof loading weights. If the test requires the sample to be rotated around its own axis,this rotation is easily activated by the operator. The abrasive sheet is attached to thedrum with three strips of a double-sided adhesive, which are placed approximatelyevery 120 around the circumference of the rotating drum. The abrasive sheet is

    blunted to the required degree of abrasiveness with the help of the included steelcylinder.

    In order to comply with the standard, a minimum of three samples need to betested and the result calculated as an average value. The test specimens can bevulcanized directly in a mould or cut from a sheet of vulcanized rubber plate with thehelp of a circular cutting tool. The sample is inserted into the sample holder so that 2mm of the material remain exposed. The exposure is adjusted with a adjusting gauge.After placing the specimen mounted in the sample onto the abrasive sheet, theSTART-button is pressed and the test will be performed according to standardautomatically. The test specimens are weighed before and after the test to anaccuracy of 1 mg. The abrasiveness of the abrasive sheet is also tested with threetests before and after each test series, using rubber comparison samples.

    DIN Abrasion tester (Abraser / Abrader), which is the original product developedin Germany and sold worldwide, is designed to conform to the ASTM D5963 andIS0 4649 standards (ISO 4649 has replaced the DIN 53516 standard). This topquality and highly popular abrasion tester will allow you to measure the abrasionresistance of rubbers (vulcanized thermo set rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers)that are subject to abrasive/frictional wear in their actual service, such as tires,conveyor drive belts, and shoe soles. Since wear is always a result of abrasion,

    different test methods have been developed for the simulation of long term wear.

    The method conforming to ASTM D5963 / ISO 4649 has proven to be the bestway of simulating long term wear. This method enables comparative tests for thecontrol of the uniformity of a specific material. The achieved test results provideimportant parameters in respect to the wear of elastomer in practical use.

    The abrasion resistance is measured by moving a test piece across the surface of an abrasive sheet mounted to a revolving drum, and is expressed as volume loss incubic millimeters or abrasion resistance index in percent. For volume loss, a smallernumber indicates better abrasion resistance, while for the abrasion resistance index; asmaller number denotes poorer abrasion resistance. The DIN Abrasion tester can also

    be used for comparative measurements on other materials such as plastics, chalk orpainted surfaces.
