1. Nature of the work?

Immigration Officers are responsible for ensuring that the immigration legislation is

enforced, this covers the rules of entry for foreign nationals at the border, detecting and

apprehending those who have breached the border and removing them or pursuing those in

breach of immigration and criminal laws.

2. What are the educational requirements for your preferred occupation?

"Immigration Officer" is a generic term covering jobs such as Immigration Enforcement

Agent, Adjudications Officer, Immigration Information Officer, or Detention Officer.

Each position requires slightly different backgrounds in terms of education, and physical

abilities and hire at entry level of GS-5 unless your experience qualifies you for a higher

grade. You must be under 35 for most law-enforcement positions. Most commonly

however is a successful completion of a bachelor's degree or a full 4-year course of study

from an accredited college or university in any field leading to a bachelor's degree may

be substituted for the required experience at the GS-5 level.

3. What is the salary range for your preferred occupation?

Agent makes a salary between $47,791.00 - $61,671.00.

4. Rewards and Benefits?

You will be paid a base salary plus any authorized locality pay for the geographic area where

you will be employed. These positions have promotion potential to the GS-13 level. A career

ladder promotion is contingent upon satisfactory performance and the satisfactory completion

of all training or other requirements. Such promotions are not mandatory. These positions

require substantial overtime. Special Agents earn special types of overtime, Law

Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP), which is calculated at a flat rate of 25 percent of base

salary. Selectees will be required to work on an unscheduled basis in excess of the 40-hour

workweek. You must be readily accessible to perform this unscheduled work. To ensure your

availability, you will receive extra compensation in the form of LEAP. There is also an

annual sick leave and health insurance is provided.

5. Outlook for the future?

Job opportunities in most local police departments will be excellent for qualified

individuals, while competition is expected for jobs in State and Federal agencies.

Average employment growth is expected.
