Lab #1 – Day 2 Worksheet

Goal: Please complete the following activities using google docs and share it with Ms. Capasso. This is an individual assignment and will be due Monday, September 29, 2014.

Scenario: You have just completed a lab investigation on the affect of temperature on the density of marshmallows. You want to make sure you process the data from this lab in a way that shows you have mastered your understanding of precision, accuracy and uncertainty in the lab AND get a perfect score on the Super Science DCP rubric! You will be graded on this lab addendum on the following:

Section Requirements ScoreMeasuring uncertainty, precision and accuracy

- Show correct uncertainty in your measurements

- When performing calculations, propagate that uncertainty

- Comment on the precision of your measurements using half-range and uncertainty

- Comment on the precisions of your measurements using % error

______________ / 25

Data Collection and Processing

- Organize your data into clear charts; graded on rubric

- Graphically display your data and a trendline and error bars (for extra credit only); graded on rubric

Raw Data: In a shared google spreadsheet, organize the following data showing the correct uncertainty in the header.

Marshmallow dimensions were taken using this ruler. What is the uncertainty of your measurements? How do you know?

Temperature dimensions were taken using this Celsius thermometer. What is the uncertainty of your measurements? How do you know?

Mass was taken using a digital scale that read to the tenths place. What is the uncertainty of your measurement? How do you know?

Raw Data: You only had time to test two trials for the following three conditions at the following temperatures. We used square marshmallows and measured the side of the marshmallow to calculate volume. (V=s3)

20.0° C Trial 1: Side= 2.01cm, Mass= 2.8g Trial 2: Side = 2.00cm, Mass= 2.8g

40.0° C Trial 1: Side= 2.31cm, Mass= 2.8g Trial 2: Side = 2.40m, Mass= 2.9g

60.0° C Trial 1: Side= 2.81cm, Mass= 2.8g Trial 2: Side = 2.92cm, Mass= 2.8g

Processed Data:

Now, perform all calculations to get the density of the marshmallows and the accuracy and precision. You should perform calculations to get volume, density, half-range and % error for Trial 1 given the actual density of 0.37g/mL @ 20°C for these type of marshmallows. SHOW ALL PROPAGATION OF UNCERTAINTY!* You answers should be given to the correct number of significant digits.

Graph:

Finally, graph your data in Google sheets. Include labeled axes, title and a trendline. Error bars will be graded as extra credit only and are not required!
