Roll up… roll up……….early that is, to the April general meeting to look overthe Patriot Camper on display which is the recent TJM camper of the year inthe $15/30K category. Mike and Anita Pavey will have the camper set up inthe WAFC car park for you to inspect before the meeting. Have a look throughbefore you venture upstairs. Mike and Anita will also be our guest speakersthat evening.

Stop Press 2

Our AGM is fast approaching and we are still on the lookout for members tofill roles which include

Secretary Treasurer Library Membership Officer……………………….Helpis needed!

At our AGM all roles are declared vacant and you can be nominated for anyposition. Some current committee are offering to continue on but pleasespeak to any committee member about the various roles and for information, and don’t feel as you are new to the club you need to sit back. A largenumber of those who attend our meetings regularly have already given of theirtime in committee roles in years past so we do encourage those new to theclub to step forward.

It was good to see a large roll up in March and the early start with bar andsausage sizzle seemed successful. My apologies to those who went hungry. Ihad been working from the show of hands at the Jan and Feb meetings. Itdoes at least prove one thing………. you all read the Club newsletter! Ourcooks have told me no less than 100 snags next time….. We may try soupand crumpets mid-year.

It is of course getting closer to those months with very few letters in them, starting with ‘May’. That can signal an exodus north chasing the sun formany members. So before you go please renew your membership by payingthe $80 fee to the Club by direct credit to our account or to the Treasurer. (Ouraccount detail is TLCCSA CBA Blackwood BSB 065-132 Account No 0091-0957) Whilst fees need to be ratified at the AGM your Committee is notseeking an increase this year. Don’t forget your membership renewal formwhich we use to capture any change of detail and also your commitment toabide by the Club rules and by-laws (something that is near and dear to myheart at present). As you renew please also think of moving to electronicnewsletter copy if you have not done so already. It helps to keep costs downand avoids membership fee increases.

The Boot and Bonnets day in late May is a great opportunity for members tosee how vehicles can be set up for touring. It is many years since this waslast held and being at Kuitpo it is an opportunity to enjoy a social weekendcamping or just venture down on the Saturday or Sunday morning if time poor.

Members may like to review the following web site and consider support forthis cause:

Cheers,

Darryl Royans

Hi Folks,

Well we are scooting along thisyear and its nearly Easter and timefor chocolate. We have had somegreat trips already this year andwhen you read this, there will betwo trips getting ready for theSimpson Desert, so we wish themwell and trust that the weather willbe kind to them. Just after AnzacDay, another group of dedicatedenvironmentalists and Flinderslovers will be heading off to GumCreek to cull some more cactus, avery worthwhile project, and itsvery satisfying to see the effect ofthe previous year’s endeavours. Now, you will note that we haveremoved Merna Mora Station fromthe list of trips due to insufficientresponse, which is OK because weare only trying for trips which youare interested in going on. Incontrast, the trip of the FleurieuPeninsula, to be arranged by theLions Club in October, has provedextremely popular with 19 vehicleson the list already !! The trip toDeep Creek Conservation Park isanother popular trip, and there isstill room so get your name on thelist and discover a real treasureright in our own backyard. Blazeaidat Wirrabara in May will be a reallygood trip, it gives you anintroduction to the life of people onthe land and it’s a great feeling togive their community some supportin their time of need. If you wantto escape the winter and head forwarmer territory then Gem Tree inJune is the trip for you.Kudriemitchie Working Bee and theweekend at Willangi are alsoproving popular so consider themtoo. And don't forget the Boots andBonnets weekend next month, onethat we can all go to and learnsomething. Anyway I reckonthere's plenty of choice, so goahead, pick one or two and enjoyyourselves.

Cheers for now and safe travels.

social reportMarch is now over and the weather is definitely coolingoff, especially the mornings. Barkley the cat has decidedto grace us with his presence and is once more insistinghe sleeps on the bed. The club is in full swing, no lessthe social activities.

As you can see, a lady has taken over purchasing theraffle prizes and from now on there will be a femininetouch. The prizes I obtain have a high dollar value and so Ihope it will encourage members to buy a few moretickets and keep the social funds buoyant. I have done adeal with my local home wear store and so will have aconstant supply of good quality raffle prizes for months tocome.

In mid March a small group of like minded souls arrived inMoonta Bay for a weekend of relaxation. The weatherwasn't as kind with thunderbolts and lightening very veryfrightening, but that didn't deter the robust spirit of theToyota Club whom got up Saturday morning and headedstraight into town for coffee. Afternoon found usexploring south of Cape Elisabeth to the tracks and dunesof Reef Point and the abandoned Aboriginal community ofPoint Pearce. An abandoned vehicle blocking the track(project for another trip???) meant a change of direction. But feeling like Sturt with exploration pounding throughour veins such detours were all part of the fun. Note toself, the minute I feel like Burke and Wills I'm headingstraight back to camp.

There were great views of Point Victoria and the islandswhich are an aboriginal heritage site. The way home ledus to more sand and mud play (after the rain of Fridaynight) in Cape Elisabeth before happy hour and mulledwine back at camp. No fishing occurred due to theweather, but the mud and sand sure made up for it. Ourexploring also found a bush camp ground called "the Gap"south of Point Elisabeth. This site is caravan accessible, campfire friendly with long drop toilets, behind the dunesso away from the wind. With easy access to tracks inboth directions, a definite future destination. I love theYorke Peninsula, so squid or no squid, there will beanother trip in the not to distant future :-).

So what's on?

1/. Bush ball 10 th May. Lamb on the spit, dancing andentertainment from the Strolling Tones. Cost $25 perperson. The entertainment cost is a donation to cancerresearch. Ladies bring a salad or desert. To be held at thelarge sheds Mt Pleasant show Grounds. Camping cost is$15 per powered site. A 4WD mystery tour is planned forSaturday afternoon. The evening will start with Happyhour and a talent show at 5 pm (Dress Country Formal). Itis not to late to book, (but please let me know ASAP)visitors and friends of club members welcome. Moniesneed to be paid by the end of April, so please bring along

the $$ to the next meeting or alternatively payment canbe made electronically into the club account.

2/. Aquatic centre 12 th June 1030hrs start, trip leaderDarryl Royans. Tour of the aquatic centre and the newlycompleted Marion wetland. BBQ lunch to follow.

3/. 16 th August Mt Crawford picnic and fossicking day.Meeting at Mt Crawford forestry information centre onWarren road at 0930hrs to pick up fossicking permitswhich are available for a small cost. We will be fossickingfor gold, opal and garnets, driving some of the not opento the public 4x4 tracks (forestry permits pending)exploring the old mines and doing the short hike up to theforestry lookout tower. Bring a picnic lunch, plenty todrink, warm clothes, sturdy foot wear and fossickingequipment. A couple of metal detectors will be suppliedon the day for people to have a go. Mining has occurredin the area from the 1800's with finds of precious stones, gold and even diamonds.

4/. 13 th & 14 th September Ladies Day drive weekendat the Bartagunyah Estate, near Melrose in the SouthernFlinders Ranges. There will be bush camping at thevineyard, 4wding of the mountain tracks on the estateand wine tasting on Saturday evening. Beautiful views areto be found on the 4 x 4 tracks. On Sunday a drive isplanned for a couple of hours over the Bridle trail. Ifhubby is driving he will be given a pretty pink ribbon towear. I encourage the ladies to have a go. Please note, onladies day drives, encouragement and support is theexpected behaviour from the passenger seat. The clubhas had a very recent experience of what happens whenthe driver has an accident and can no longer drive. Ladiesday drives are planned as a confidence booster for thosethat don't get behind the wheel very often, but may justbe needed to drive out of a track one day. Back seatdrivers and negative comments will be frowned upon andsupper duties complete with vanilla slice ( presidentsfavourite) at the next club meeting for those perpetratorscan be easily arranged. The track is described as a soft 4wd track so an easy drive with beautiful views. We willbe heading back to Adelaide after an early lunch. Cost ofcamping $15 per adult per night, there are a limitednumber of powered sites available. Driving of the tracks isa further $25 per vehicle for the weekend which is veryreasonable.

5/. September: We have organised for an open eveningat Snowys camping store prior to the commencement ofthat months general meeting. From 1800-1930hrsSnowys will have their store open to us, a guest speakerhas been arranged to talk about solar panels, theirselection, use and care. A 20% in store discount hasbeen negotiated for club members attending on theevening.

Social Report (continued)

James and I looking at purchasing a couple of Engel's, soif anyone else is in the market for a fridge, let us knowand we'll see if we can negotiate a good bulk purchasediscount. The general meeting will commence at2000hrs at the WAFC.

Please support this initiative and Snowys by attending,as it's not only a great chance to score some bargains, but also important to show support for businesses thatmake the effort to provide services, products andactivities to our club.

6/. Pirates on the Murray: Easter 2015. We alreadyhave some bookings for this fun activity to be held nextyear, so get in quick. We will be hiring houseboats, donning pirate garb and having a fun filled weekend ofsailing, pillaging, having a few drinks, a bit more pillagingand a few more drinks.

I would like to thank the BBQ cooks, their support crewand helpers for the BBQ at the last meeting. This was agreat success although a little under catered, something

that we promise to rectify.

These BBQ's are an excellent opportunity for fellowshipbefore the formal meeting takes place. So make sureyou are there for the next one.

Finally, as we know, the AGM is nearly upon us and I associal coordinator (and hopefully going into this nextyear) could really do with a group of helpers. To plan, organise and in a lot of cases also run the social eventsfor all members to enjoy is too time consuming for oneperson, and being a shift worker also limits my ability todedicate sufficient time to the cause. So anyone willingto put their hands up to help out, (especially to run themonthly raffle) would really be appreciated. As we allknow, many hands make light work.

So until next time, stay bright side up, wheels turningand keep the passion for adventure flowing.

Linley Edwards

A lot ofpeople helped, it was great to see the Toyota Groupworking as a team.Darryl – Those who attended the February GeneralMeeting will know that there was the intention to hear anappeal from Jeff Shammall regarding a sanction that theCommittee had imposed upon him. It was an appeal tothe Membership about the decision that the Committeehad imposed. Had Jeff turned up he would have beentalking to the Membership. We cancelled the plannedGuest Speaker and the Trip Report so that Jeff wouldhave that opportunity. It only became evident towards theend of the meeting that Jeff had not turned up, so wehad no alternative but to close the meeting. We have sought Insurance advice and Legal advice. - The Guest Speaker, Web Designer, Kathryn, talkedthrough significant changes NSW have made to their website, followed by the Brisbane Club who have used thesame organisation. We learnt of more things that we cando on our web site – but the cost was too high.- Advertising and marketing, sponsorship.- Trips, reciprocal rights in places such as NSW who havea property, Willowglen, and Kooradilly between Sydneyand Canberra, which is a camping area, and Yaark inVictoria.- Community involvement – we talked of ourEnvironmental work. We are pretty much leading thatwork across the States. The hours we spent onenvironmental work, given our membership numbers, isabove other States.- 6-7 hours of discussion followed. If you want furtherdetail, Darryl and I are happy to discuss any issue further. We think that our Club is in a very good position. Ourinclusion of the involvement of families with children isalso above the level of other States. We are doing verywell, but it is an ongoing challenge for all clubs to growmembership.Toyota Australia also provided a number of vehicles to beused for the conference 150 Series Prado, a GX 200Prado and a FJ 40 Cruiser. They were most generouswith their support of the Conference.Toyota Australia will also be presenting gifts to Clubs ineach State. They have offered us a gazebo branded withclub logo and Toyota Logo, as well as a series of tear-dropbanner, approximate value $4,500. Each club aroundAustralia will be given oneIDEAS - We would like to implement events and arelooking for people to provide help to get these off theground. We witnessed a “funkana”, which is a series ofvehicle related exercises, quite casual, not timed, forexample, using your vehicle to pull a bucket out of thewater. Trip Report: (Ray Gedritis)Ray showed the DVD on the wonderful restoration ofMcAlpine’s Hut at Willow Springs. Robin Trezise hastaken this video assisted by Lyn Trezise.Guest Speaker: Steve Sambell from Coopers TiresMichael Brooks – welcomed Steve Sambell and Deanfrom “Wise Choice Tyres”.Steve – Thank you for having us here tonight. We are 100years old this year in USA. We have been in Australia for25 years. I wish to clear up discrepancies regarding themileage warranty on our tyres. If you live in a capital city,we offer a kilometre warranty. You may travel anywherein Australia. They come with a 6 year manufacturersguarantee as well. The rotation and balancing of yourtyres is important. You must rotate your tyres. We have adriver’s guide that we hand out to assist you. Alignmentdoes not need to be checked every time you have arotation. Regular rotation ensures your warranty remainsvalid. The “Tyre Dealer” charges whatever they wish, wehave no control over that as a manufacturer. 7-8 years agowe had a meeting with our dealers in the country – 90%did not want a mileage warranty, so if you live in thecountry you do not get the warranty. Conditions aredifferent, you may not get the 80,000ks that we say youwould get around the city, however you will still get goodmileage. The tyres are made to last. Deep tread. Depth of treadremains the same from shoulder to shoulder, othermanufacturers will taper the shoulder off. Casings, sidewalls are a lot straighter, so that reduces damage andgives a far better drive. See through tread, maintainscontact with the road for all conditions. There are 13different tread designs to suit all needs, particularly offroad. They are made for a purpose not for a price. We arethe only tyre manufacture in the world that do not makeoriginal equipment for people. Coopers are just a betterquality product.Don Ransom – What are your thoughts on low pressure?Steve – You need to drive to the conditions of where youare. If you go to a light truck tyre, some are quite heavy, you do not need high pressure if you are going to drivearound the city. Tyre pressures are a personal preference, but we can give you a guide.Don Ransom – do you believe in the old 4 PSI rule?Steve – yes, check tyres at cold pressure, mostimportant, as it heats up the air will further inflate thetyre. They are a floatation tyre. They are designed to flex.Grant Evans - Do you recommend tyre pressure monitorsand is there one that stands out.Steve – “Tyre Dogs” work quite well, they are a greattool, especially when you are out in tough conditions. Yes,I think monitors are a great tool and they can save a tyre.I have brought three tyres tonight for you to look at, andwe have a gift bag for all people present. I recommendour web site, you can key in information on any point youwish clarification.Question - there are tyre rating in America – do we havesuch ratings?

Steve - Tread wear and traction wear ratings are made forpassenger tyres not light truck. We do a tread wear ratingup to780. In USA independent tests are carried out on,wet wear, hot, breaking and they come up with a number, performance, braking, tread-wear rating. Most of ours arefairly high, the tread-wear chart shows 280-300. Coopersare nearly double that, but that is only on passenger ratedtyres. We have that detail in our advertising.Peter Young – is it the same as comparing fuel economyon vehicles, you are just comparing two tyres.Steve – Yes, if you have three people you can get threedifferent outcomes.Michael offered a vote of “Thanks” to Steve for hispresentation and his willingness to answer questions.IPP(Ralph Abbot) Nil ReportPublicity (Paul Hoskins) (Apology) Nil ReportNewsletter (Monte Weeding) Nil ReportDiscount Purchasing (Steve Golley) (Apology) Nil ReportMerchandising (Beryl Sheean): (Nil Report)Technical (Peter Young):There was a good response to the “check your vehicle”

last Saturday week at Alltrac. The question aroseregarding radiator leaks with the modern coolants, whatdo you put in the radio to stop the leak? You will probablyhave to fill it up with water, so then just flush out thewater as soon as you can and replace with coolant. Youcan add pepper, eggs, and stuff you used in the past thatwill probably still work to stop the leak.UHF radios are good, but not of much use if you are notnear your vehicle, whereas you can carry a Sat phonewith you at all times, even when out walking.
