BOMBA
Survival of African traditions in a nearly pure formFree classes every Thursday in Isabela from 7-9pm
ART BEAT P A R R A N D A S N A V I D E N A S
The Bomba is our cultural expression, which represents African roots directly influenced by the colonization. It includes a wide variety of rhythms, song, dance, feelings, and instruments specifically built to create this musical genre. The Bomba barrels (drums with specific characteristics created for this genre, includes two: the buleador [low base] and subidor [higher pitched]), the cuá (sticks), and the maraca (dried gourd that is shaken) are the rhythmic base that the singer, back up singers, and dancers use to create their improvisations. Dance is one of the most important elements in this genre. The dancer begins improvising dance steps following the basic rhythm while choosing and provoking one of the tambores (drums), known as the primo, who interprets the dance moves through the drum beats, it is through the primo that the dancer becomes one of the percussionist by using improvised dance movements, known as piquetes, to mark powerful beats with great feeling. Want to learn more about our Puerto Rican rooted genre? Then come visit us every Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at La Sexta Milla O’Lounge in down town Isabela. Located on Rd 4472 next to Gomera Taty. For more information: (939) 717-0193. The classes are FREE!!!
Navidad in Puerto Rico is a time
for parties, traditions, religious
reflection, family and the infamous
parrandas. A parranda has all the
makings for a great celebration!
For those of you who are un-
familiar with a parranda. Let me
give you the basics…A parranda
is a tradition in which a group of
friends and family called the trulla
(carolers) go from house to house
unannounced with the gift of song.
These songs are called aguinaldos
(carols). Parrandas usually take
place after 10 p.m. and go well into
the early morning. The aguinaldos
usually come well equipped, the
trulla bringing the instruments that
usually include: guitars, maracas
or shakers, the güiro. calves, pan-
deretas (tabmbirines), and drums,
but anything goes, what ever you
have that can add to the rhythm
and melody. As the air begins to fill
with excitement, song, drum beats
and scratches from the güiro, you
know its officially Navidad in Puer-
to Rico.
So, make sure you have plenty of
libations, food and holiday spirit in
stock for these unexpected friends
and family. It is a real honor to re-
ceive a parranda in your home. Af-
ter dancing, singing, and rejoicing
the cooking begins. Typical dishes
can include rice with coconut, mar-
zipan and the traditional asopao.
Once the music, dance, drink and
food dwindle, the time has come
to pack it up and surprise another
neighbor. Parrandas go until early
January and is a great way to
pleasantly surprise those you love.
So come on… grab a tambourine,
your friends, and get into the spirit!
Do a search and you will find the
music to the aguinaldos, so that
you can practice on your instru-
ment of choice. I found a website
with the words to some of the tradi-
tional aguinaldos: http://www.elbo-
ricua.com/aguilnados.html
El Fuá is a fun, simple song
to remember, since the chorus
(first paragraph) is repeated a lot
through the entire song.
Felicidades!
El Fuá
Yo tenía una luz que a mí me
alumbraba, yo tenía una luz que a
mí me alumbraba y venía la brisa
fuá... me la apagaba y venía la brisa
fuá... me la apagaba
(Coro )
Coro
Coro (2X)
Después no prendía aunque
yo tratara, después no prendía,
Coro (2X)
Adiós que me voy, doy la retirada,
adiós que me voy, doy la retirada,
yo tenía una luz que a mi me alum-
braba, y venía la brisa y fua... me la
apagaba

What makes you feel free?
Knowing that I am a spirit that has been lent this body to evolve and revolutionize life.
What worries you?
I worry that the youth has replaced values for vani-ties, which are flaunted by outsiders civilizations.
What is your favorite movie?
The documentary The Future of Food, and HOME.
Do you have a favorite musician, group, song/al-bum or combination of these?
Antonio Caban Vale, Expresa lo que sientes.
What is your drug of choice?
Love
Right now, who inspires you?
My wife, my grandchildren and my children.
What do you think your purpose is on earth?
Be a maker of great memories, be a good example for the community, grow as a spirit, among many other things.
What do you love and hate about this town?
I love the greatness each child has even before they are born and the negativity is the misuse they give their land. We are born on an island with blessed with so much natural beauty and the negative as-pect is that we do not realize how fortunate we are.
What would you like to come back as in your next life?
As a duck, because he is able to adapt to many climates, he finds his food in the air, under water or on land. He is waterproof, a migrant, a gypsy and has an enormous variety in his species. He is social, not territorial, and aggressive only when he must defend his offspring.
A quote to live by or personal motto?
The day your body disappears, what your spirit has done will be left behind.
What is soul?
The essence of life. The everything inside the nothing. The unexplainable beauty. The energy of the taste of life.

El documental The Future of Food y HOME

¿Tienes alguna cita o dicho personal?

Tis the season to be merry! On the island that means it is time for parrandas, coquito, pasteles, arroz con gandules, and of course el ‘chón, whether it be pavochón o pollochón or the original lechón! In my family they don’t roast pig, so I decided to go for a drive up to Guavate, where it seems to be Christmas all year round.
It is fairly common for family and friends to pack up on a Sunday and head to the beach or go for rides all over the island enjoying roadside eats that each town is famous for, this is known as dominguear (Sunday drive). If this year you’ve opted out of going to the farm and buying a whole pig to roast over hot coals for more than twelve hours...then might we suggest you fill the tank and head to Guavate! This way you can get all the traditional holiday fixings while mingling with some 100% Puerto Rican Mountain dancing fools! And it is only a Sundays drive away from the sights, sounds, and smells of the best lechoneras on the island. From the northwest coast, just get on Route 2 heading south (toward Mayagüez) and go until you see the sign for Guavate...
The scenic, two hour, drive takes you along the coast, it starts off tropical, then get very dry and arid, as you head up the mountain the fog might set in and you feel the temperature drop a few degrees. The curvy roads are filled with beautiful mountains embellished with growing bamboo, creeks and historical statues and landmarks.
You know you have arrived because you are immediately consumed with the smell of slow roasted delectable’s, but do not stop there! GO
all the way up, until you hear the music. Lechoneras are stands or restaurants offering seasoned whole pig, slow roasted over an open fire, order by the pound and watch your lechón chopped right before your eyes with a machete. For those who want the experience but not the pork there is plenty of other delicious traditional foods such as, chicken and turkey, pastesles, arroz con gandules, and root vegetables. Everything is cafeteria style and reasonably priced.
There are some great artisans in Guavate as well. In this issue we have featured “El Picapiedra de Guavate,” Juan Santtos Torres, who sculpts out of marble (please see ArtBeat section). We really enjoyed a gallery called Arte Guavate, which was filled with very well crafted handmade souvenirs, traditional instruments, pilons, hot sauces, honey, woven art, and much more. Our first stop on the way up was a woman, Diana, and her mother, Elba, selling homemade coquito (Latigazo Dulce) on the side of the road. She had a Santa hat on and was giving away samples of coquito! A perfect compliment for this time of year.
The event is filled with so much more than lechón. It is one big block party! With the rhythm of bachata, merengue, and salsa music, faces of the young and old, arts and crafts filled with Puerto Rican heritage and hospitality. It is an adventure with many surprises around every winding turn. What a terrific way to spend a Sunday in Puerto Rico with family and friends.

tasteEL CAREY CAFE & BEACH SHOP I have passed El Carey everyday for the last two years and never stopped by. The question is why? The place looks really cool, has a surfer friendly atmosphere and is right on the way to one of the best beaches and surf breaks in Isabela. So, I ask the question again, why didn’t I stop and the answer is very simple, I’m just not that smart. The smart people already know and love this place, for it’s awesome innovative food, great atmosphere, and the wonderful family that owns it.
The breakfast menu at El Carey is nothing less than genius. They took the traditional state side breakfast added island style flare and even threw in some healthy items as well. Eggs, bacon, ham, Long board Sandwiches, a Jobos crepe with ham, eggs, cheese, veggies and topped with bananas, pockets stuffed with everything; from bacon, eggs and cheese to mangu. They also have pancakes with bananas and even one with Oreos. That sounds so good it shouldn’t be legal. Another favorite is the Arepas, they are made from a dough of white corn flour and have the look of a really fat tortilla, or even an English muffin, there’re great and at El Carey they stuff them with all kind of goodies. If you are looking for something healthy, try a mixed fruit bowl with granola, Acai Rio bowl or a smoothie.
If you surfed through the breakfast hours don’t worry they have lunch too. Salads, sandwiches, pockets (wraps), tropical bowls, which are your choice of veggies, chicken, meat, or fish cooked with peppers, onions, and tomatoes, served over rice and beans and topped with cheese. They also have a homemade burger served on local bread and their specialty, which is a marinated octopus salad, served with mixed greens and sesame seeds.
I know when you pass by El Carey you are probably in a hurry to get to the beach or out in the surf, but don’t make the same mistake I did. Stop and eat, you and your stomach will be happy you did.
Entonces, me pregunto nuevamente ¿Por qué no he parado ahí?

ART BEAT
b a r r i o g r a n d e
In the same way that people integrate them selves into their reality, these guys integrate their musical ideas with current issues. the purpose is the bring people together through rhythm.
Barrio Grande is a musical ensamble, which creates an artistic and sonorous encounter in order to integrate the infinite cultural variants present in Puerto Rico.
Each of its members represents a scene, a rhythm, a style of life.
The distinctive sound of this collaboration is centered on the fusion of an acoustic guitar (altered by sound effects), the vibrations of the bomba barrels, the profound sounds generated from a synthesizer, and the intensity of electronica and garage music. Utilizing what is know as reggae lounge and a dub technique as an axis, Javo Grant, interlaces the traditional Bomba rhythm created by Randy Zorrilla with the explosive experimental rhythms of Carlitos Acosta on the drums.
Add to this the brilliance with which Carlitos coalesces his peculiar voice and his capacity to reinterpret musical concepts that keep the audience constantly enthralled.
Each genre has its own foundation, and while the sounds fuse, you must recognize the point at which all the rhythms converge. For example, every time we explore a new fusion of Bomba with Reggae, we find that there is a great similarity between these rhythms. It is like codes that connect us with the history of these genres. In a certain way it is like the birth, which feels culturally empowering.
There are times when we integrate a saxophone. And other times we collaborate with the vocalist, Iliana Vazquez, a prominent, young traditional bomba singer. The one constant is the amount of energy at the shows and it is always a unique experience. Each time it gets better. Each time it is more powerful. The people in the audience are an integral part of this experience. We can make anyone dance! And we do it because
we love to play with each other. Puerto Rico is a barrio… A Barrio Grande! (Big neighborhood).
“The acoustic guitar was my first instrument, I feel most comfortable with this instrument. When I play, not only do I listen, but I literally feel the sound waves that she is emanating. It is like a rifle by which I can evoke intense sentiments of happiness; and on the other hand I can channel the most darkest images.”—Javo Grant
“The feeling while playing a live show is what most attracts me. Music is a force and is a gift that should be shared.”—Javo Grant
“The drums called me. The physical aspect, effort, aggression and subtleness she needs seemed like the ideal vehicle for my expression.” And that was how Carlos Acosta began his musical journey for more than fifteen years now. He has participated in an array of musical projects from rock, jazz, reggae, hip-hop….Until Barrio Grande. “As for singing, it was the first art I learned. When I was five, I would sing The Beatles with my aunt. Guess I became a musician because of her. Thanks M.”—Carlos Acosta
“My cocolo home. My bombero home.”Salsa sparked my apparition of music, then I heard Puerto Rican bomba…the rhythm started at my feet (as the song goes), and it woke my African soul, and my love for the tambor (drum). My hands, instrument that transmited through the leather, my feelings, my being; that which allows my roots to manifest along with the many rhythms of the world, those that I have learned and those that are yet to be discovered. My purpose: “whoever hears the feeling of my music, their spirit will truly be delighted.”—Randy Zorrilla
Javo Grant
“La guitarra acústica fue mi primer instrumento. Es donde más cómodo
me siento.
The Beatles”! Supongo que
soy músico por ella. Gracias M”.
Randy Zorrilla
verdad”.

Inside the Creative World of Emiliano Gatica By Hannah Skye Griek
What make you feel free?Traveling, being with my family, watching my son play, taking pictures, reading, being in the ocean, many things.
What worries you?Bad intentioned politicians who are generating an indolent society.
What is your favorite film?Blade Runner, V for Vendetta, and Code 46, Occy Biogra-phy among others.
A favorite musical group, song or combination of?The Clash, Future Island, Sumo, Divididos, Ramones, Go-tan Project, and 80’s music, etc.
Drug of choice?Mate, coffee, photos, sleep, surf, family, travel, BBQ, ect.
Who inspires you right now? There is always someone or something that inspire me, all I need is trigger to complete or start an idea that I am working on.
What do you think your purpose is on earth?A masonic question, a good one… I don’t think I know yet, I have just been living, but with the arrival of my son the parenthesis has opened and that is now my purpose.
What do you love and hate about this town? I love pretty much everything, I love living close to the ocean, the tranquility and when it rains. I try to surpass hate, I try hard not to practice it.
What would you like to come back as in your next life?Definitely as a human, where ever and how ever, life is a miracle.
Do you have personal motto or words to live by?Actions not words.
What is soul? The union between body and spirit.

If you can’t win…don’t play.
