    THE TRAINING OFCHRIST'S DISCIPLES

    PART 2W

e learned in previous lessons about thebeginning of Christ's ministry, thecalling of the twelve disciples and their

early training in preparation for their responsibilities as apostles. As apostles (apostle means"one sent for th") , they would be sent to preachthe Gospel of the Kingdom of God to theworld, after the death and resurrection of JesusChrist.Since the disciples were to carryon the

Work of God after Jesus died, He had toinstruct them fully in the laws of God, themeaning of the Gospel and how they shouldcarryon His Work.

The disciples could not learn all this in just afew days or weeks! Their training took a fullthree and one-half years, during which timethey lived almost day and night with theirteacher, Jesus Christ. Even then, after intensiveand personal training, the disciples could notremember or fully understand all that theyneeded to know in order to successfully carryout their commission.

I t would not be until the day of Pentecost, fifty days after Christ's resurrection, that thedisciples would be given the Holy Spirit. I t

would enable them to better understand andremember the things Jesus had taught them(John 14:26).

But the time for this had not yet come.Christ had not yet finished personally training

His disciples for their jobs as apostles. Therewas still much left for them to learn!

In this lesson, we will continue to learn manylessons from what Christ taught and from theexample He set. We will study a series ofparables Jesus gave about the Kingdom ofGod, and learn some of the reasons why theWork of God is conducted th e way it itoday!

    JESUS ACCUSED FALSELY

On one particular day, Jesus and thdisciples were all gathered together in a house. There were many people there who had cometo hear Him speak and to have Him heal theirillnesses. One of the persons Jesus healed was a man

who could not see or speak. Jesus healed theman by casting out the demon that caused thiscondition. After seeing this miracle, manybelieved that Jesus truly was the prophesiedMessiah, the son of David.

This greatly angered the scribes andPharisees, who had been sent from Jerusalemto discredit Jesus. They feared that He wabecoming a threat to t hei r a ut ho ri ty an

influence over the people. These Jewish leaders expected th e prophesied Messiah to deliver the physical nation ofIsrael from domination by th e Roman government. They did not understand that Chr i s tthe Messiah-did not come to set up His worldruling government at that time. That government- the Kingdom of God-will be established over all nations at Christ's SeconComing!

The scribes and Pharisees falsely accusedChrist , saying, "H e hath Beelzebub [ispossessed by Satan], and by th e prince [Satan]of the devils casteth he out devils [demons]"(Mark 3:22). They accused Christ of usingSatan's authority to cast ou t demons, hopingthis lie would turn people away from following

Him.Jesus had come to bear a message about theKingdom of God, and qualify to replace Satan. Now He was accused of being in league withSatan!

Turn to Matthew 12:25-26 to see how Jesusanswered His fa lse accusers . "Every

against itself isbrought to ; and every city orhouse against itself _

    __________ : And if castou t Satan, he is _how shal l then his------- - - - - _ ? "

Christ was saying that if He was usingSatan's authority to cast ou t demons, thenSatan was working in opposit ion to himself and

t hr ee days and nights, Christ fulf illed the"sign" proving His Messiahship.

    o-

his kingdom would fall as a result. But Satandoes not deliberately work against himself! What did Jesus further say in verses 27 an28?

"And if I by Beelzebub cast ou t devil[demons], by whom do your chi ldren cast themout? therefore they shall be your judges. But

I ca st out devils by th e Spirit of God, t hen t hekingdom of God is come unto you."Those who came to discredit Jesus were

themselves discredited! Jesus clear ly showedthat His accusers were in the wrong. Sincethe ir authori ty was now in question with thpeople, the scribes and Pharisees feltnecessary to defend themselves. But how? Thaccusers knew they were defenseless againstthe truth!

The cunning scribes and Pharisees decidedto place th e burden of proof back on ChristPutting on a false show of humility, they said"Master, we would see a sign from thee" (vers38).

Jesus was well aware of their cunningapproach. His adversary, Satan, had tried tuse it on Him twice dur ing the temptat ion ithe wilderness (Matthew 4:3, 6). They wanteHim to perfo rm a miracle to prove tha t He watruly the Christ.

Rather than exalt Himself by perfo rming amiracle, Jesus showed that it would be Godwho would exalt Him through a resurrectionfrom th e dead, proving that He was t ruly theChrist! Christ's reply to His accusers, found inverses 39 and 40, was th at "An an_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ seeketafter a ; and the re shall no _be given to it, bu t th e sign of th e _

Church of God. This booklet proves that Jesusperfectly fulfilled this prophecy. I t was the onlysign Jesus ever gave of His Messiahship!

Jesus never tried to exalt Himself, drawattention to Himself or push Himself up front. In Matthew 23:12 He said, "And whosoevershall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that

shall humble himself shall be exalted." Evenbefore His false accusers, Jesus humbledHimself. He directed people's attentiontowards God-never to Himself!

In Philippians 2:3-8, Paul wrote thatChristians should strive to have the samehumble attitude that Christ had as a humanbeing. Read and summarize these verses on aseparate piece of paper. Then read verses 9 and10 which show that it was God who highlyexalted Christ.

Those striving to obey God should have thesame humble attitude. Christ certainly wouldnot approve of someone trying to push himselfinto a place of honor, such as the captain orpitcher of a baseball team , or as a classrepresentative. One should be a good ballplayer and student, and do his best at whateverhe's asked to do. God recognizes such effortand will bless the person at the proper time.

    JESUS' SPIRITUAL FAMILY

While Jesus and the disciples were still in thehouse, His mother and brothers came to thehouse to speak to Him. They could not enterthe house because of the great crowd of people,so they sent word to Him that they were there. The message got passed through the crowduntil someone near Jesus finally said, "Your

mother and brothers are outside desiring to seeyou ."Jesus gestured toward His disciples, who

were near Him, and said, "These are my familymembers , for whoever does the will of God ismy brother, my sister and mother." By this,Jesus showed that all those who do the will ofGod will ultimately be a part of God'sFamily .Jesus knew that He had come to make it

    4

One should not tr y to push himself into anesteemed position, such as the pitcher of a

    baseball team.

possible for those who would repent and bebaptized to receive the Holy Spirit, so theycould ultimately be born as spirit beings intothe divine Family of God.

Jesus Christ was the only begotten son ofGod, and the firstborn into the God Familyupon His resurrection (Revelation 1:5; Colossians 1:18). Those who follow Christ now, asHis spirit-begotten brothers and sisters, willbecome part of His spirit-born Family whenHe returns to establish the Kingdom of God onearth (I Corinthians 15:23) . I t is members o

th e God Family who will make up thKingdom of God! Jesus was showing that beinpart of the spiritual family of God is muchmore important and enduring than being a partof a physical family.

    THE KINGDOM PARABLES

Jesus and the disciples left the house, followed by the large crowd that had gathered, and went down to the shore of the Sea ofGalilee. Entering a small fishing boat, Jesus

pushed off a little way from shore. The naturalamplification from the water and the rollinghills on the shore, where th e crowd wasgathered, made a natural amphitheater. Allwere able to hear Jesus clearly as He continuedto teach them.

Seated in the boat, Jesus began a series ofparables about the Kingdom of God (Matthew13:1-3). A parable is a short story that teachesan important lesson, and was a commonly usedteaching method of the day. But the parablesJesus gave were not understood by the masses.Their meaning He explained only to thedisciples.

The first parable Jesus gave was th e"Parable of the Sower." Read about it inMatthew 13:3-9 and then summarize it on aseparate piece of paper. This parable is one ofthe most important parables Jesus ever gave

(Mark 4:13). Make sure you include each ofthe four types of soil the seed fell on, and whathappened in each instance.

    WHY JESUS SPOKE IN PARABLES

After Jesus gave this parable and severalothers which will also be discussed, He sent the

crowd home and explained the meaning of theparables to the disciples. The twelve askedJesus why He gave the parables to th emultitude, but then didn't explain theirmeanings to them (Matthew 13: 10, 34). I t iimportant to understand this before studyingthe rest of the parables. Jesus' answer evenhelps to explain the "Parable of the Sower!"Read Mark 4:11-12 and fill in the blanks.

"And he said unto them, Unto

it is given to____________ of the kingdom ofGod: but unto them that

[those whose minds havenot yet been opened to spiritual truth by God],all these things are done in parables: Thatseeing they may see, and

and hearing they mayhear, and ; lest atany time [or, at this time] they should

_______ , and their sinsshould be forgiven them."God is calling only a few people now to help

prepare for the Second Coming of Christ. Jesusspoke in parables so that only those whom Godcalls before the Second Coming of Christ- thedisciples, and those who are members in God'strue Church-would be able to understand. Aperson is able to understand spiritual t r u t h -God's truth-only when he has God's HolySpirit.

Those whom God is not yet calling are notable to understand the truth, even though theymay hear it. This is the explanation of the firstpart of Jesus' parable. In Matthew 13:18-19Jesus said, "Hear ye therefore the parable ofthe sower. When anyone heareth the word ofthe kingdom, and understandeth it not, thencometh the wicked one, and catcheth away tha

    6/12

which was sown in his heart. This is he whichreceived seed by the way side."There are millions of people around the

world who have read an issue of The PLAINTRUTH magazine, or heard Mr. Herbert W.Armstrong on the radio or television. Thesepeople have heard the Gospel of the Kingdom,

but have not understood it. Perhaps they wouldhave continued to listen or study, butsomething came up that distracted them. Theyare like many in the crowds whom Jesustaught, who heard His message, but weredistracted or confused by the false accusationsagainst Him, and did not follow Him.Those who have not understood will have

their chance in the second resurrection whenGod then calls them to learn His truth and to

become part of His Family. The majority ofpeople who have ever lived fall in this categoryand will have their opportunity then.

    THOSE WHO DO UNDERSTAND

    GOD'S TRUTH

The remaining three examples of seed thatfell on different types of soil represent threedifferent types of people who understand theGospel and are converted.

The stony ground on which the "seed," orWord of God, fell represents the type of personwho hears the Gospel and is very glad to havethis new knowledge. He is converted, withgreat joy, but simply has no spiritual depth ofcharacter, and endures only for a while. He isust like a seed that sprouts in rocky soil. I tgrows quickly-but too quickly for its roots tofully develop (verses 20-21).

A young plant needs good, strong roots thatwill nourish and strengthen the growing stemand leaves. Roots bring moisture to the plantfrom deep underground. Without strong roots, the plant dries up in the heat of the sun-like aman who doesn't have a lot of strength will"give in" when things get difficult (tribulation), or when others tease or make fun of him,or exclude him from jobs or games because he'sdifferent (persecution).

    6

I t takes a strong individual to stand upagainst pressure like this! But one who hasdeep, strong roots knows that God's way isright and best. He knows that when things getdifficult, God will be there to help (Romans8:31-39).

Now notice Matthew 13:22 which describes

what happened to the seed that was sownamong thorns. This represents the type ofperson who is converted, receives God's HolySpirit, but then lets the cares of this life causehim to lose interest in making it into theKingdom of God. As a result, this person"brought forth no fruit to perfection"-he didnot grow spiritually-but let the materialthings of this life become more important tohim. He did not follow what Jesus said in

Matthew 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdomof God, and his righteousness; and all thesethings [basic necessities of life] shall be addedunto you."

The good ground on which the seed fellrepresents the type of person who is converted, receives God's Holy Spirit and really livesGod's way fully and totally (Matthew 13:23).He strives not to let anything get in the way ofserving God and of keeping God's laws. He

brings forth f ru i t-grows sp ir i tua lly-anddevelops spiritual character. God blesses thiskind of person with many physical and spiritualblessings-including kingship with Christ inthe Millennium!

There are many scriptures that show God'spromise of rulership to those who overcomeand endure until the end of their lives or untilChrist returns. Revelation 3:21 is one of them. Can you find others?

    FIVE MORE PARABLES TO THE

    MULTITUDES

While Jesus was still seated in the boat, Hegave five more parables to the crowd gatheredon shore. Three of these are recorded in thegospel of Matthew, and two of them in thegospel of Mark. Each parable reveals animportant point about the Kingdom of God.

    7/12

Christ compared th e Kingdom of God to a seedwhich, after it is planted, sprouts, grows and is

    finally harvested.

The "Parable of the Wheat and the Tares"is found in Matthew 13:24-30. Like the"Parable of the Sower," Jesus later explainedits meaning to the disciples. The meaning isfound in verses 36 to 43. In explaining thisparable, who did Jesus say the "enemy" is?

The "good seed"?___________ . Who do the"tares" represent?(Tares, or darnel, are weeds that grow withwheat and look very much like it. But whenthe tares grow to maturity and flower, they areeasily distinguishable from the wheat.)

Jesus was saying that the saints, or "childrenof the kingdom," would live in this world ("thefield," verse 38) along with the unrighteousuntil Christ returns at "the end of this world(age)." The wicked (those who have refusedGod's calling) will ultimately be burned in the

lake of fire, but the saints will be glorified, receiving spirit bodies when they are born intothe Kingdom of God. They will "shine forth asthe sun" (verse 43). I John 3:2 says that "doth not yet appear what we shall be: but weknow that, when he [Jesus Christ] shall appear,we shall be like him; for we shall see him as heis."

What does the glorified Jesus look like?Read Matthew 17:2 and Revelation 1:14-16.That is what the saints will look like when theyare glorified in the Kingdom! The "Parable of the Mustard Seed" and the

"Parable of the Leaven" (Matthew 13:31-33)show that the Kingdom of God has the smallestof beginnings. Jesus chose just twelve disciples, and even today the Church of God has only a

very small number of members compared tothe total number of people now living. But theKingdom of God will expand to include thewhole earth and all people in it.

In the "Parable of the Lamp UnderBushel" (Mark 4:21-23), Jesus was showingthat the true Gospel, which had been a mysteryto the world and hidden from men's understanding, would surely be preached to all theworld. In Matthew 10:26-27, Jesus specificallytold the disciples "there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shanot be known. What I tell you in darkness [or,in private], that speak ye in light: and what yehear in the ear, that preach ye upon thehousetops."The true Church of God today is continuing

the job that Christ first gave to the disciples ofpreaching the Gospel to the world. Jesusprophesied that in the end-time the " . . . gospof the kingdom shall be preached in all theworld . . ." (Matthew 24:14).The "Parable of the Seed Growing of Itself"

in Mark 4:26-29 shows that, once the seed issown, it is God who gives th e increase(compare this with I Corinthians 3:6-7). God'sChurch proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdomof God, but it is God who then calls people intoHis Church, ultimately to be in the Kingdom.

These then were the parables Jesus spoke tothe multitudes gathered on the shore of the Seaof Galilee. When He was finished , Jesus sentthe crowd away and then privately explainedthe meaning of the parables to the disciples. Then, Jesus gave the disciples four moreparables about the Kingdom of God.

    PARABLES FOR THE DISCIPLES

In the first of these parables for the disciples, the "Parable of the Hid Treasure," Jesus said,"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto

in a field; the whichwhen a man hath ', he hideth, and forjoy thereof goeth and _that he hath, and that field"(Matthew 13:44).

In the "Parable of the Pearl of Great Price,"Jesus said, "Again, the kingdom of heaven islike unto a merchant man,

__________ : Who, when hehad found one of ______ , went and _that he had, and it" (Matthew13:45-46).In these two parables, Jesus was encouraging

the disciples to put their whole life and beinginto seeking first the Kingdom of God. Beingborn into God's Kingdom is such a precious giftthat a person should be willing to give upeverything to attain it .

What occupation did Peter, Andrew, Jamesand John give up in order to become Christ'sdisciples? _(Matthew 4:18-22). What job did Matthew, who was also called Levi, give up? (Luke5:27-28) . (A pub

lican was a tax collector.) The disciples gave upeverything and followed Christ (Mark 10:28)Even though God doesn't always ask

Christ compared the Kingdom of God to a fisherman's net, which, when put into the sea becomes filledwith many kinds of fish. The fish then are separated, the good from the bad .

Christians to give up all that they own orpossess, He expects them to be willing to. Anyphysical thing they might have to give up inorder to live God's way is just a little thingcompared to being born into the Kingdom ofGod!

The "Parable of th e Net" in Matthew13:47-50 was a warning to the disciples-whowere sent ou t as "fishers of men"- tha t notevery person they "caught" would be trulycalled of God. The Gospel Message attracts allkinds of people, bu t not all are t ru ly converted.Jesus said that when He returns, all those whoare not truly converted will be separa ted fromthose who are.

The final parable Jesus gave His disciples atthis time was the "Parable of the Householder," which is found in Matthew 13:52. Thedisciples were the ones who were "instructedunto the kingdom of heaven" by the previousparables. They were learning some entirely newthings "which have been kept secret from thefoundation of the world" (verse 35).

This parable shows that the disciples wouldnot only preach some "old" things-lessonsfrom th e Old Testament writers and prophe t s -bu t would also preach the "new truths"

about the Kingdom of God that Jesus hadpersonally taught them. In like manner, God'sChurch preaches t he s ame things today.

This concludes the parables of the Kingdomof God that Jesus gave on that particular day.As a review, list these ten parables and indicatewhich ones He addressed to th e people, andwhich ones He addressed only to thedisciples.1. _2. _3. _4. _5. _6. _7. _8. _9. _10. _

    JESUS STILLS A STORM

On a certain day, Jesus and the disciplesentered a boat to cross to t he o ther side of theSea of Galilee. While on their way across,Jesus fell asleep in the boat (Luke 8:22-23).

Before reaching th e opposite shore, a suddenstorm came up. I t must have been an unusual lypowerful storm, because some of the discipleswere seasoned fishermen who were accustomedto the sudden squalls that often came up on thSea of Galilee. But those experienced fishermen were no match for th e waves that werenow coming over the sides of the boat anthreatening to sink them. They were frightened!

They woke Jesus and shouted over thpounding waves, "Master save us, or we'llperish." Jesus commanded th e wind to ceaseand t he water to settle. There was great calmThe disciples were amazed. They had neveseen a storm stop at someone's command!(Luke 8:24-25.)

After reaching the eastern shore, Chr is t andthe disciples were immediately met by a manpossessed by many demons. Christ cast thedemons out of the man and sent them into

herd of swine. The swine ran down thmountainside and drowned in the sea. What did the people of the area do afte

hearing about what happened, and seeing theman who had been possessed calmly sitting andtalking with Jesus? (Luke 8:34, 37) _

The people were fearful of Jesus and askeHim to leave! After He left, the man whom H

cast th e demons ou t of went all over thcountryside tel ling the people about the greatthings Jesus had done for him. This man wadeeply grateful to Christ, and he wanted otherpeople to know about it!

After returning to Capernaum, Jesus continued teaching and performing many miraclesHe visited the town of Nazareth, where He hadgrown up. Jesus spoke there on the Sabbath,

    DISCIPLES

news that the Kingdom of God will soon beestablished on the earth.

Notice in the last part of verse 8 how Jesussaid th e Gospel should be preached. "Freely yehave received, "

Christ came to give and not take from thepeople. The disciples, who had freely been

taught by Jesus, were to likewise preach theGospel of th e Kingdom and to heal th e sick, without asking for anything in return. This iswhy The PLAIN TRUTH magazine, YOUTH 83,the GOOD NEWS, and other Church publications are sent free to any who ask for them. TheChurch of God never charges when publicappearance campaigns are held, and never asksthe public for money.

In verses 11 and 13, notice what else Christ

told His disciples. "And into whatsoever city ortown ye shall enter, enquire who in it is_____ ; and there abide till ye gothence . . . . And if the house be worthy, let yourpeace come upon it: bu t if it be_____ , let your peace return to you."Jesus was saying that some people would listen, and others would not.

With these instructions, Jesus also gaveth e disciples a warning. "Behold, I send youforth as sheep in th e midst of wolves: be yetherefore wise as serpents, and harmless asdoves. But beware of men: for they willdeliver you up to the councils . . . And yeshall be hated of all men for my name'ssake: bu t he that endureth to the end shallbe saved" (verses 16-17, 22).

The disciples knew well how the religiousleaders hated Jesus. Since they would now be

officially representing Christ, the disci pIeswould also be attacked. Later on in theirministry, after the death and resurrection ofChrist, some of them were brought before"councils," or courts, and tried for their verylives. Just as it happened then, so it will alsohappen to members of God's Church yet in thefuture!

After giving these instructions to the twelvedisciples, Jesus sent them on their way. They

followed His instructions, preaching the Gospof the Kingdom and healing many sick people. When the disciples returned, they told Jesusabout what they had done and taught (Mar6:30).
