A skill is defined as a movement with a purpose

A technique is a way of performing a skill

If we apply this to basketball, we can identify the following:

Skills Example TechniquesShooting Set Shot

Lay Up

Hook Shot

Passing Chest Pass

Bounce Pass

Overhead Pass

Alley-Oop

Dribbling Left Hand Dribble

Right Hand Dribble

Cross-Over

Double Cross-Over

In order to improve performances, we need to breakdown techniques and compare them to a model performer. (Model performers could be a teacher, coach, video of a professional [youtube etc] or an advanced player within your class. )

When we breakdown performances, we identify criteria required for the model performance.

For example:

Page 4: L1 PE – Move to Improve Skills & Techniques. A skill is defined as a movement with a purpose A technique is a way of performing a skill If we apply this

•Feet hip distance apart •Knees bent•Ball held above head •Ball in fingers of dominant hand. •Other hand at the side for balance.

•Power comes from knees •Straighten your knees, push the ball high to the basket•Finish with ‘flick’ of the wrist.

Skill: Shooting

Technique: Set shot

Class Task1. Analyse the data from your pre-tests and identify three techniques in your basketball performance which require improvement. (One must be from each skill area: shooting, passing, dribbling)

2. Using the following website: www.youth-basketball-tips.com

Research your three techniques and provide model performance criteria for each of them.
