BEFORE LOADING.

Before taking any pictures with the 2-C

Autographic Kodak Junior, read the following

instructions carefully and make yourself per-

fectly f amiliar with the instrument, taking

especial care to learn how to operate the

shutter. Work it for both time and instan-

taneous exposures several t imes before thread-

ing up the fi lm.

The first and most important thing for the

amateur to bear in mind is that the light which

serves to impress the image upon the sensitive

film in a small fraction of a second when it

comes through the lens, can destroy the fi lm as

quickly as it makes the picture. After the fi lm

has been developed and all deaeloper thor-

oughty washed, out, it may be quickly trans-

ferred in subdued white l ight to the fixing bath

rn'ithout injury. Throughout all the operations

of loading and unloading be extremely careful

to keep the red paper wound tightly around

the fi lm to prevent the admission of l ight.

2-HOW TO USE THE No. 2-C AUTO-GRAPHIC KODAK JUNIOR AS A

FIXED FOCUS CAMERA.'

Set focus at 2l feet.Use speed of l -25 of a second.Set diaplrragm midway betwee n I ancl 2 or

8 and 16 o r F .11 and 16 .By folloiving the above suggestions this

camera can be used as a fixe<l focus instru_ment with the additional advantage of beinginstant ly convert ib le to a focusir rg camerawhen concl i t ions cal l for i t . ' I t rnust be re_membered, however, that when using th isKodak as a fixed focus type it is necessarythat the subject be in br i l l iant sunl ight , inorder to obtain a fu l ly t imed exposure.

Explanation.

A lens is of ten spokcn of erroneously ashaving a fixed focus.

There is no such th ing as a universal orfixed focus lens, but in certain small sizedhand cameras, (equipped with short focuslenses) the lens is immovable, i . e. , set at adistance that is a compromise, as to its focus, between far and near points. A camera witha lens so focused, used in combination witha relatively small stop, is designated a uni_versal or fixed focus instrument.

of its focal length. It should be borne clearlyin mind that this speed depends not upon thesize of the opening, but upon the size of theopening in proportion to the focal length ofthe lens (distance f rom the lens to platewhen focused on infinity). The lens that willcut sharp with the largest opening is said topossess the greatest speed.

Such openings are termed stop or diaphragmopenings, and for convenience in estimatingexposures, are arranged according to twosystems, the f system and the Uniform System,or U. S" system, as commonly abbreviated,

In the / system the proportional size or"value" of the stop opening is designated by"f ," and is the quotient obtained by dividingthe focal length of the lens by the diameter ofthe stop.

Taking, for instance, a lens of S-inch focuswith a stop 1 inch in diameter, and we findthat 8*-1-8; hence 8 is the f. value of thestop and would be designated 1.8. Supposethe stop is r/a inch in diameter, we wbuld thenhave g. !A_f .32.

For convenience, the unif orm system ofinarking stop openings has been adopted bynearly all manufacturers of iris diaphragms.Such convenience is at once apparent when weunderstand that each higher number stands

for an opening having half the a,rea of thepreceding opening, each smaller stop. (o,higher number) requiring double the time ofthe one next larger.

With the l. system, each stop is a certainproportion of the focal length and not ar_ranged with reference to the other openings,so that estimating exposure is much morecomplicated by this system.

As a number of exposure meters and simi_lar devices for determining the proper ex_posure are based upon the f. system, we ap-pend the following table showing the ,,f

FLASH LIGHT PICTURES.

By the introduct ion of Eastman Flash Sheets, picture taking at night has been wonderfullysimplified. A package of flash sheets, a pieceof cardboard, a pin and a match complete thelist of essential extras, although _a Kodaktrlash Sheet Holder is a great convenience.

With flash sheets, no lamp is necessary, thereis a minimum of srnoke and they are far safer

, than any other sel f -burning f lash medium, be_sides giving a softer l ight that is less tryingto the eyes. :

Many.interiors can be taken with the flashsheets that are impracticable by daylight, eitherby reason of a lack of i l luminat ion or thereare windows in a direct l ine of view whichcannot be darkened sufficiently to prevent theblurr ing of the picture.

Evening parties, groups around a dinner orcard table or single portraits may be readilymade by the use of our flash sheets, thus en_bbling the amateur to obtain souvenirs ofmany occasions which, but for the flash light, would be quite beyond the range of the art.

Pin a flash sheet by one corner to a piece ofcardboard which has previously been fixed ina perpendicular posi t ion. I f the cardboard iswhite it wil l act as a reflector and increase thestrength of the flash.

The flash sheet should, alzuays be placed twofeet behind and two or three feet to one sideof the camera. If placed in front, or on a linewith front of Kodak, the flash would strikethe lens and blur the picture. It should beplaced at one side as well as behind, so as rothrow a shadow and give a 1ittle relief in thelighting. The flash should be at the sameheight or a l itt le higher than the camera. Thesupport upon which the flash is to be madeshould not project far enough in front of itto cast a shadow in front of the Kodak. Anextra p iece of cardboard a foot square placedunder the flash sheet will prevent any sparksfrom the flash doing damage. F{owever, byusing the Kodak Flash Sheet Holder. allthese contingencies are taken care of, and westrongly advise its use.

proper distance from the camera to thb sub_ject can be ascertained by looking at the imagein the finder. For a three quartJr picture thiswill be from 6 to 8 feet, and for a full f igure, from 8 to 10 feet. The flash should be on theside of the Kodak away from the face, thatis, the sitter should not face it. The flashshould not be higher than the head of thesitter.

To Maxe e Gnoup-Arrange the chairs inthe form of an arc, facing the Kodak, so thateach chair will be exactly the same distancefrom the camera. Hal f the persons .o-posingthe group should be seated and the rest shouldstand behind the chairs. If the group is large, any number of chairs may be used, but none ofthe subjects should be seated on the floor, asis sometimes seen in large pictures, becausethe perspective,..would be too violent.

BacrcRouxls- In making s ingle port ra i ts orgroups, care should be taken to have a suit_able background against which the figures willshow in relief ; a l ight background is betterthan'a dark one, and often a single figure ortwo will show up well against a lace curtain.Iior larger groups a medium 1ight backgroundwi l l be sui table.

Eastman Flalh Sheets burn more slowlythan flash powders, producing a much softerlight and are, therefore f.ar preferable inportrait work; the subject, however, shouldbe warned not to move, as the picture is nottaken in,stantau, eously, about one second beingrequired to burn one sheet.

EASTMAN FLASH CARTRIDGES.

Eastman Flash Cartridges may be substi-tuted for the sheets if desired. We recommendthe sheets, however, as moi"e convenient.cheaper and capable of producing the best re-sults. The cartridges are only superior whenabsolutely instantane ows work is essential.

CINCH MARKS.

If the fi lm and paper loosen up a trif le whentaken from the camera, many amateurs arelikely to take the cartridge in the hand andwind it as closely as possible, cinching it t ightlywith a twisting motion. There's nothing morelikely to injure the negative than this tightdrar, ving of the fi lm, as it abrades the surface, making fine parallel scratches running length-wise of the fi lm, which, in some cases, willruin the negative. Do not "c.inch" t.he car-trid,ge. It simply needs to be wound tightlyenough so that the red paper keeps insidethe flanges.

DIMMED FINDERS AND HOW TOMAKE THEM BRIGHT AGAIN.

I For some cause which is not thoroughly' understood, glass will sometimes ,,sweat" to

such an extent as to cover it with a sort offilm, which, of course, makes it very dull,

. whether i t be used as a lens or mirror.Whatever the cause, the result is the occas_

ional dimming of finders and lenses. Withfinders, the trouble is sometimes in the mirror.which necessitates wiping it by means of a softcotton cloth. To clean the mirror in the finderon the No. 2-C Autographic Kodak Junior, wind the end of a handkerchief around the endof a lead pencil and pass between lens andmirror.

KEEP DUST OUT OF THE, CAMERA.

Defective negatives are often caused by par-r ticles of dust which have collected on the

inside of the camera and settle upon the filmin particles that produce small dark spots upon

_ the prints.t

It is, therefore, well to wipe out the insideof camera and .bellows occasionally, with a

r* slightly damp cloth. In summer weather, or;$ after the camera has remained idle for anvlength of 'time, thi's needs special attention. .

4. Attach one end of the apron to spindlethrough which axle "C" passes by means of themetal hooks which are to be engaged with thelugs on the spindle. The corrugated side ofthe rubber bands is to be beneath the apronwhen it is attached. Turn to left on axle ,,C',

and wind entire apron on to spindle, maintain-ing a slight tension on apron in so doing byresting one hand on it.

IMPORTANT.Preparing the Cartridge.

Film to be used in the Kodak Film Tank must befastened to the red paper at both ends. All films arefastencd at one end in our factory. The operation canbe accomplished in the following manner:

-

. Just before you are ready to develop (holdinE snoolrvith the unprinted sid_e of the red paper up) unrolt-thered pape-r.carefully until you uncovef th-e piec-e of gummedpaper which is fastened to end of film and is to b6 used asa means of fastening fllm to red paper. Moisten thegummed side of sticker evenly for about an inch acrossthe end and stick it down to red paper, rubbing thor-oughly to secure perfect adhesion. Wind end

Over-development may be causrcl by a n-ris-take in leaving f i lm in the developer too long;by using solut ions too warm or by those whonr ix their own developer in get t ing the c levelop-ing agent too strong.

In th is case, the negat ive is very strong andintense by t ransmit ted l ight and'requires a verylong t ime to pr int . The remedy is to r . . i r ice

by use of Eastman Reducer or the fo l lo iT: : -m e t h o d :

then wash 10 minutes in running water or infour changes of water.

Negatives may be reduced locally by apply-ing the above solution to the dense parts witha camel 's hair brush, r ins ing of f the reducer

with clear water occasionally to prevent itsrunning onto the parts of the negative thdtdo not require reducing.

Under-Development.

An under-developed negat ive di f fers f roman under-exposed one, in that it is apt to bethin and fu l l of detai l , instead of harsh andlacking in detail.

This defect would be caused by a mistake in

removing fi lm from the developer too soon, byusing solutions too cold or by an error in com-pounding chemicals. It is obvious that neither

of these defects wi l l occur in Tank Develop-

ment i f instruct ions are proper ly fo l lowed.

Intensification by Re-Development.

There ere a number of different processes

for intensifying under-developed negatives;

the most common being by means of Bi-

chloride of Mercury, and Sodium Sulphite or

Ammonia.

This method, though simple to use, has its

disadvantages, as it builds up the highlights

out of proportion to the weaker portions ofthe negative, and also, unless carefully handledis apt to produce iridescent stains or granularmarkings that are impossib le to remove.

Whi le the method of intensi f icat ion by re_development is only comparatively new, thenow cornmon use of Velox and Royal Re_developer for Sepia tones on Velox andBromide pr ints wi l l make th is the most ef_fective means of . intensification.

Velox or Royal Re-Developer may be usedin exact ly the same manner as for producingSepia tones on developing paper.

Negat ives intensi f ied by re-develoDment arebui l t up evenly, wi thout undue contrast andwithout the chance of staining.

The advantage of being able to use thechemicals for two di f ferent purposes (Sepiatoning pr ints or intensi fy ing negat ives) isobvious, the resul t in e i ther case being al l thatcould be desired.

Place the printing frame the correct dis-tance from the artif icial l ight used, holding theframe away from the burner a distance equalto the diagonal of the negative. See exposuretable, page 78.

We suggest, bef ore making the first ex-posure, the cutting of a piece of Velox paperinto strips about an inch wide, and placing

one of them over an important part of thenegative, make the exposure, using your bestjudgment as to the distance from the light andthe time of printing. Develop it, and if notsatisfactory try another strip, varying the timeas indicated by the first result. When the de-sired effect is secured you can make any num-ber of prints from the same negative, and ifthe time of exposure, distance from light, aswell as the time of developing are identicalall the prints should be equally good. By com-paring your other negatives with the one youhave tested, you will be able to make a f.airlyaccurate estimate of exposure required by anynegative.

After taking the exposed piece of paper

MOUNTING.The most satisfactory method for mounting

prints is by the use of the Kodak Dry Mount_ing Tissue, as by the use of this t issue theprint lies perfectly flat in absolute contacteven on the thinnest mount and absolutelywithout curl .

The tissue comes in flat sheets, dry notsticky, and easy to handle, and the tissuebeing water-proof protects the print from anyimpurities in the mount stock.

For multiple mounting and folders the tissueis ideal.

The process of mounting is as fol lows:Lay the print on its face and tack to the

back a piece of the t issue of the same sizeas the print by applying the point of a hotflatiron to small spots at opposite ends.

Turn the print face up and trim the printand t issue to the desired size. place in properposition on mount and cover print with a pieceof smooth paper and press the whole ,uri"..with a hot flatiron.

Press, don't rwb.

The iron should be just hot enough to sisswhen touched with the wet finger. If theiron is too hot the tissue will stick to themount and not to the pr int ; i f too cold thetissue will stick to the print and not to themount.

Remedy: Lower or ra ise the temperatureof the iron and apply again.

When mounting with paste, lay the wetprint f ace down on a sheet of glass andsqueegee off all the surplus water, then brushover the back with thin starch paste. Laythe print on the mount. Cover the printwith a clean piece of blotting paper and pressinto contact with squeegee or rubber printro l ler .
