HANDLING PRECAUTIONS HANDLING PRECAUTIONS PRODUCT SAFETY INFORMATION REQUIRED FOR SAFE USE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS DOCUMENT. BEFORE HANDLING, READ PRODUCT AND MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS AND CONTAINER LABELS FOR SAFE USE, PHYSICAL AND HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION. THE MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET IS AVAILABLE ON THE DOW CORNING WEB SITE AT DOWCORNING.COM, OR FROM YOUR DOW CORNING SALES APPLICATION ENGINEER, OR DISTRIBUTOR, OR BY CALLING DOW CORNING CUSTOMER SERVICE.

USABLE LIFE AND STORAGE When stored at or below 32°C (90°F), Dow Corning 790 Silicone Building Sealant has a shelf life of 12 months from date of manufacture. Refer to product packaging for “Use By” date.

PACKAGING INFORMATION Dow Corning 790 Silicone Building Sealant is packaged in 10.3-fl oz (305-mL) disposable cartridges that fit ordinary caulking guns, 20-fl oz (590-mL) E-Z Pak foil sausages that fit caulking guns, and also in 2.0- and 4.5-gal (7.5- and 17-L) bulk pails. It can be dispensed by many air-operated guns and most types of bulk dispensing equipment.

LIMITATIONS Dow Corning 790 Silicone Building Sealant should not be applied: • In structural applications. • Below grade or to materials that

outgas, which can cause bubbling in curing sealant.

• On brass or copper or other similar material that can be corroded.

• To surfaces that are continuously immersed in water.

• For use as an interior penetration firestop sealing system.

• To building materials that bleed oils, plasticizers, or solvents – materials such as impregnated wood, oilbased caulks, green or partially vulcanized rubber gaskets, or tapes or bituminous below-grade waterproofing and asphalt-impregnated fiberboard.

• In totally confined spaces because the sealant requires atmospheric moisture for cure.

• To surfaces that will be painted after application. The paint film will not stretch with the extension of the sealant and may crack and peel and most likely will not adhere to the sealant.

• To surfaces in direct or indirect contact with food.

• To wet or frost-laden surfaces. • In applications where solvents or

primers are not fully dried prior to sealant application. Uncured sealant is very sensitive to many solvents, primers, and cleaning agents; these may cause the sealant to remain uncured or tacky.

This product is neither tested nor represented as suitable for medical or pharmaceutical uses.

Application The number of joints and the joint width should be designed for a maximum of +100 and -50% movement of joint width at time of installation. The depth of the sealant should be 1/2 the width of the joint. The maxi-mum depth is 1/2 inch (13mm) and the minimum is 1/4 inch (6mm). To control joint depth, use closed cell polyethylene, non-gassing polyolefin or open cell polyurethane backer rod. If joint depth does not allow for backer rod, use polyethylene bond breaker tape to prevent three-sided adhesion. Closed cell backer rod should be 25% larger than joint width; do not compress more than 40%. Open cell should be compressed 40%. Do not use open cell rod in horizontal on grade joint or with E.I.F.S. When installing during time of large temperature swings such as spring or fall, and in joints designed for movement greater than ± 25 %, be aware of the significant joint movement before cure, may cause aesthetic issues such as ripples in the sealant surface. Performance will not be affected. Ready to use, apply using professional caulking gun. Do not open product container until preparation work has been completed. Apply sealant using consistent, positive pressure to force sealant into the joint. Tool sealant to create a concave joint shape and maximum adhesion. Dry tooling is recommended. DO NOT use soapy water or other liquids when tooling.

Tooling & Finishing All joints should be masked to ensure a neat appearance and prevent sealant applied outside the joint. Place nozzle of the gun into bottom of joint and fill entire joint making complete contact with joint sides. Keep the nozzle in the sealant, continue with a steady flow of sealant preceding the nozzle to avoid air en-trapment. Tool the sealant slightly concave using dry-tooling techniques. Do not tool with soap or detergent and water solutions.

Limitations nDo not allow sealant to come in contact with solvent during cure.nDo not allow sealant to come in contact with curing polyurethane sealants during cure.nNot intended for immersion.nSealant may be applied below freezing temperatures if substrates are completely dry, frost free and clean. Contact Technical Service for more information.nDo not apply when substrate temperatures are below -20°F or above 130°F.nNot intended for structural glazing.nNot recommended for horizontal vehicular traffic.nDo not apply to surfaces that will be painted as sealant surface will not hold paint.nDo not apply to damp or wet substrates. nLower temperature and humidity will extend tack free and cure rates.nAllow treated wood to age six months before application.nBrass and copper may be discolored. Test apply prior to application.nTest sensitive substrates, such as mirror backings, for compatibility before use.

Sealant dimensions W = Sealant width, D = Sealant depth, C = Contact area.

EXPANSION JOINTS - The minimum width and depth of any sealant application should be 1/4” by 1/4” (6 mm by 6 mm).

The depth (D) of sealant may be equal to the width (W) of joints that are less than 1/2” wide. For joints ranging from 1/2” to 1” (13 mm to 25 mm) wide, the sealant depth should be approximately one-half of the joint width.

The maximum depth (D) of any sealant application should be 1/2” (13 mm). For joints that are wider than 1” (25 mm) contact Tremco’s Technical Service Department, or your local Tremco field representative.

WINDOW PERIMETERS – For fillet beads, or angle beads around windows and doors, the sealant should exhibit a minimum surface contact area (C) of 1/4” onto each substrate.

Surface preparationsSurfaces must be sound, clean, and dry. All release agents, existing waterproofing, dust, loose mortar, laitance, paints, or other finishes must be removed. This can be accomplished with a thorough wire brushing, grinding, sandblasting, or solvent washing, depending on the contamination.

Tremco recommends that surface temperatures be 40˚F (5˚C) or above at the time the sealant is applied. If sealant must be applied in temperatures below 40˚F, please refer to the Tremco Guide for Applying Sealants in Cold Weather that can be found on our website at www.tremcosealants.com.

PrimingTremflex 834 adheres to common construction substrates without primers; however, Tremco always recommends that a mock-up or field adhesion test on the actual materials being used on the job be conducted to verify adhesion. The field adhesion test can be found in appendixes X1 of ASTM C 1193, Standard Guide for Use of Joint Sealants.

ApplicationApply Tremflex 834 with conventional caulking equipment filling the joint from the bottom first. Immediately tool the sealant with a spatula to ensure intimate contact with the joint walls. Dry tooling is always preferred, although water can be used in limited amounts to slick the spatula if needed. For window and door perimeter fillet bead applications, a 1/4” minimum surface area is recommended.

Dry TimeAt 72˚F (22˚C), 50% R.H., Tremflex 834 is tack free in 15 minutes and dries at a rate of about 1/8” per day but can be painted after only 30 to 45 minutes with latexes, or oil-based paint. As the temperatures decrease, the dry time of Tremflex 834 will increase. A good rule of thumb is one additional day for every 10°F decrease in temperature.

Clean upExcess sealant and smears along the joint interface can be cleaned up or removed with soapy water before the sealant skins. Any utensils used for tooling can also be cleaned with soapy water.

Limitations• Do not apply Tremflex 834 to damp or contaminated surfaces.• Always utilize the accompanying MSDS for information on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and health hazards.

WarrantyTremco warrants its sealants to be free of defects in materials, but makes no warranty as to appearance or color. Since methods of application and on-site conditions are beyond our control and can affect performance, Tremco makes no other warranty, expressed or implied including warranties of MERCHANTABILITY and FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, with respect to Tremco sealants. Tremco’s sole obligation shall be, at its option, to replace or refund the purchase of the quantity of Tremco sealant proven to be defective and Tremco shall not be liable for any loss or damage.
