Clubs – Lunchtime Clubs
Be Your Best Expect the BestSucceed Together
After School Clubs Club Terms:
• In order to ensure all of our clubs are well attended, and to allow your child to get the most they can out of the club, we ask that you agree
to the following terms when you sign your child up to a club:
•
• Your child will be committed to attending the club every week. Unless they are absent from school, your child will be expected to
attend every session organised. If your child misses more than two sessions without advanced notification in writing, they will lose their
place in the club.
• You will collect your child promptly at the required time. If a you or the adult responsible for collection are more than 10 minutes late
collecting your child, they will be taken to after school club and you will be billed for this time.
• You will ensure any required kit or equipment is in school for your child to use in the club session. Very few of our clubs require
any special resources to be provided by you. Some clubs may require PE kit or other clothing to be worn. You will be notified of any kit or
equipment your child will need in the sign up letter and we will expect this to be made available to your child for every club session.
• You will provide up to date contact details to the office for all adults responsible collecting your child to ensure the club leader
can contact you when needed. If a new adult will be collecting your child, you will need to provide their details to the school office.
• Your child will not be released to any adult unless we have received advance permission from you.
• Your child will not be allowed to travel home alone unless advanced permission has been given.
• We will avoid cancelling club sessions unless absolutely necessary, however sometimes this may be unavoidable due to staff absence etc.
If the member of staff is absent and unable to run their club, we will aim for another member of staff to cover . Where this is not possible,
you will be informed of the cancellation as soon as possible. If a session has to be cancelled for any other reason, you will be informed via
text and Facebook and we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible.

Attendance There is an expectation that over the
course of a year (190 days) a child’s
attendance will be at least 97%.
Absence which falls below 90% is
categorised by the government as
persistent absence. For a child to fall
below the 97% target this autumn
term they would have missed 4 days
of lessons.

• At Ormiston Meadows children have the opportunity to take part in guided reading
sessions. A rotation of activities will be completed over the course of the week so
children become confident in a range of reading skills.
Reading
Be Your Best Expect the BestSucceed Together
Reading Records
Every child in school has
access to a reading record. In
this record you can make notes
about your child's reading, this
is part of homework every
week.
Adults in school will also make
a note of your child’s reading
when they have read in school.

Speed Reading
We are working on improving children’s speed of
reading this year.
Children should be able to correctly read at least 90
words per minute.
This is a skill that can be easily practised at home by
timing and trying to beat their times.
Be Your Best Expect the BestSucceed Together
Handwriting
• In school we are asking all children in from Year 2 to
use cursive looped handwriting.
• This starts with letter formation and then moves on
to joining all of their words.
• Year 1 children will not be required to use cursive
handwriting.
Be Your Best Expect the BestSucceed Together
Writing
In KS1 we use ‘Power of Reading’ and Cornerstones to teach skills of
reading, speaking and listening, grammar, spelling and punctuation,
planning, drafting and editing.

Maths
• We are following a mastery maths curriculum linked
to Abacus.
• The National Curriculum objectives have been
grouped in blocks e.g. place value, addition and
subtraction etc.
• Giving children more time to embed the learning in
each area will mean more pupil working at a
mastery level.
Be Your Best Expect the BestSucceed Together
Calculation Policy
• The new policy works through 3 stages –
Concrete – pupils using physical resources to explore number.
Pictorial – Drawing pictures to explain reasoning.
Abstract – Written calculation methods.
This method will help embed pupils understanding of number.

Cornerstones Curriculum The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the new 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations.
Our new curriculum will be delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which will provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.

Homework
• In KS1 children will be given homework every Friday. The homework is due in
every Wednesday. If your child needs support with homework please speak to
their class teacher.
Be Your Best Expect the BestSucceed Together
Year 2 SAT’s - May 2018
• SAT’s (Standard Assessment Tests) are tests that children sit in Year 2 to show where children are working at in Reading, SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and Maths
• In recent years, ‘old’ national curriculum levels (e.g. Levels 1, 2, 3) have been abolished as set out in the government guidelines. Children are now described as working towards, working at and working at greater depth according to the Year 2 expectations of the new curriculum.
• The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations, which all schools have had to work hard to meet in the last two years.
• As of 2016, test scores are now reported as ‘scaled scores’.
Be Your Best Expect the BestSucceed Together
Year 2 SAT’s - May 2018 What is meant by ‘scaled scores’?
• It is planned that 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’.
• Each pupil’s raw test score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above
or below 100.
• The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper end point above 100.
• A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a score of 100) will be judged to have
demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests.

Year 1 Phonics Screening
• Week Commencing Monday 11th June
• National Statutory Assessment that all children will complete.
• It is a quick way of assessing your child's ability to use their phonic
knowledge to read words which could be unfamiliar to them.
• It is a list of 40 words some of which are real and some are nonsense.
• They will be asked to sound out and blend each word, like they would
do in their everyday phonics learning.
• The results of the screening will be given to you in time for end of year
report.
• If a child doesn’t meet the pass mark then extra support will be provided
in Year 2 and they will retake at the end of Year 2.

Home/School Agreement
• Please sign a copy of the home school agreement
before you leave and complete the evaluation form.
• There are Year 1 and Year 2 information sheets to
take home for further reading if you would like.
• Thank you on behalf of the KS1 team.
