…this informs our department’s direction (Mission and Vision Statements*) (*proposed)

The people of Oakland

The artists and arts venues of Oakland

Mission

In accordance with the City of Oakland Guidelines, the Cultural Arts Department

strives to provide art to the people of Oakland and

enhance the dimension of our humanity.

Vision

The Cultural Arts Department will provide

the platform that will assist the artists and

arts venues of Oakland to succeed to their

fullest potential.

Opportunities we must capture…

Achieve Oakland’s buy-in

• Survey Oakland’s residents about their views on art & its importance in society

• Determine what art the people want to see and where

• Listening to the people of Oakland will give them an ownership stake in the power of art to transform the city’s identity

Page 6: KRUIZ, Cultural Affairs Manager

Own the entrances to Oakland• Make art available at all the

entrances to Oakland (BART, Amtrak, OAK, Greyhound,…)

• Permeate the atmosphere as soon as people enter Oakland. Make people associate art with Oakland. #oakland=art, #oaklandartlife,…

• Multiple arts opportunities per venue (short form theater, live music, gallery exhibitions, poetry jams,…)

• Arts itineraries at the stations

Opportunities we must capture…

Reinvigorate the Art & Soul Festival

• Make it the premier event on the West Coast!

• Increase exposure to increase attendance

• Increased attendance will support the vendors (many of whom are Oakland artists)

• Increased attendance also attracts additional corporate sponsorships, especially among the new Oakland tech-set (Pandora, Uber,…)

Opportunities we must capture…

Page 8: KRUIZ, Cultural Affairs Manager

Expanding arts partnerships

• Build comprehensive database of arts venues and companies in Oakland

• Expand database: Outreach to up-and-coming arts partners

• Bridge the gap: Use database to connect artists with venues, artists with each other, artists with students (to provide mentorship and apprenticeships)

• Encourage the financial viability of arts as a career

• Make sure artists and venues know that the City of Oakland is here for them

Opportunities we must capture…

Page 9: KRUIZ, Cultural Affairs Manager

Own the art events calendar

• Become the go-to arts calendar for events in the City of Oakland

• Stop relying on 3rd parties to showcase our art scene (too many disparate sources for attendees to get information)

• Have all the venues send us their arts events, then we promote them live (send team members to report/hashtag/geolocate/blog,… to raise public awareness)

• Team members get to pick which events they want to attend, commit to writing 500 words about it, interviewing the hosts, taking pictures,…)

Opportunities we must capture…

Brevity is the strength of Twitter.

Short, quick messages will allow us to announce
