The medieval market square (RynekGlowny) and the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice)are the focal points for visitors to Krakow, forming the heart of the Old Town area.Wander through the menagerie of stalls inthe cloth hall, enjoy a coffee and visit thenearby medieval churches. The district ofKazimierz has developed an almostseparate identity to the majestic Old Town. The Jewish quarter of the city consists ofdarker, winding streets full of intriguingcafes and shops.

Krakow was featured in a number ofscenes in the movie Schindler’s list, andhides a dark past in which most of thequarter’s inhabitants were taken to theAuschwitz and Birkenau concentrationcamps during the Second World War. Thearea is now enjoying a renaissance withvisitors eager to explore its numerousmuseums and cafes.

Today, Krakow has emerged from atumultuous past with a fantasticparty-going spirit. Visitors will find it hardto find a street without a liberal scatteringof watering holes. The cafés and bars openearly and don’t close until the early hoursof the morning, with many offering livemusic or poetry readings, and others justkeep it simple, providing good vodka andlots of it!
