1 . I N T R O D U C T I O N

KOSMOPOLIS 08 is concerned to synthesise the world’s most pressing problems, showing how they are reflected in changes occurring in ways of engaging in literary production. This year’s Festival tends towards activism wielding arms from the domains of creation and culture.

The commitment of writers to new political, social and ecological causes is the conceptual mainstay of an event that also takes into account the mutations journalism is undergoing because of the impact of the new media, and the revolution nascent in the multimedia convergence we are witnessing today.

K08 also offers a monographic study of the work of J. G. Ballard, a tribute to Agustí Bartra, a new Alpha Channel broadcast, and an exploration of the links between the modern poetic tradition and more recent genres like Hip Hop, Spoken Word and Sound Poetry.

As with every other Kosmopolis Festival, we continue to go deeper into the original spirit of the project: to uphold an expanding view of literature in which the oral word, the printed word and the electronic word interact dynamically with the arts and the sciences in a space of cosmopolitan horizons.

3.1 WRITERS FOR CHANGE

Climate change, wars, global terrorism, mass migrations, erosion of basic freedoms, social and digital divides… Faced by the sheer magnitude of today’s problems, more and more voices are calling out for profound changes and urgent action to help resolve the serious situation in which our planet finds itself.

What can culture do to help provide a response to these problems? How do writers face their responsibilities with regard to such issues? Are we witnessing a new concept of committed literature?

Writers for Change explores the different ways in which authors take on new social and environmental causes, revisiting the old polemic between literature and commitment and reviving the role of literature in these times of new, accelerated change.

"When literature becomes a hymn of praise for a country, the flag of a nation, the voice of a political party or mouthpiece of a class or group, it can be used as a powerful and crushing instrument of propaganda, but it loses its intrinsic nature …” These words of Gao Xingjian, the Nobel Laureate for Literature in 2000, sum up his speech to be given on the last day of K08. The great Chinese writer will speak on the raison-d’être of literature and the sacrifices involved in defending creative literature against abuses of political and mass-media power.

J. M. Coetzee. Reading of Diary of a Bad Year (recorded interview)Wednesday 22, 8.30 p.m., and Sunday 26, 12 p.m. – Proteus Hall. English, with Catalan subtitles.

The Nobel Prize laureate J. M. Coetzee will read, exclusively for Kosmopolis, some fragments from his book Diary of a Bad Year. Coetzee begins by forcefully addressing the dilemmas that affect our individual and collective futures. "What is the duty we must confront? What is the task that we must carry out and that we owe to future generations?" For Coetzee, these questions that once sounded excessively abstract have now taken on real and specific meaning. The duty of writers and intellectuals is to convey this disquiet to society. 4

Jon Lee Anderson. Iraq: The War that Never Ends Wednesday 22 October, 8:45 pm, Proteus Hall, Spanish

Jon Lee Anderson has witnessed international confrontations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Uganda, Northern Ireland, Israel, Palestine and Bosnia among many other places. In K08 he will discuss a matter that he has already raised in his book The Fall of Baghdad: why does the Iraq war drag on? In his talk, Anderson will warn about the risk that wars like the one in Iraq will last for a long time and will analyse the possible causes of a new situation: the non-existence of any deterrent force that can attenuate conflicts, for example political leadership and rigorous and consistent alliances. Anderson believes that this situation is urgent because we have now entered the final phase in the struggle for territory and the most sought-after resources.

Arkady Babchenko and Emir SuljagicModerator: Christian Martí-MenzelThursday 23, 7 p.m. – Café Europa. Russian and English, with simultaneous translation.

At a young age, Emir Suljagić and Arkady Babchenko were witnesses to two of the cruellest wars to strike Europe in the 1990s: the first, as a refugee in Srebrenica, during the Bosnian war, and the second as a Russian soldier in Chechnya. Their first-hand accounts stand out for their complete independence and because they are written with an excellence that transcends the terrible facts that they describe. With the presence of these two authors, we will attempt to explore up to what point it is possible to describe the horror of war and talk about the need to leave a testament to barbarity for future generations.

At the beginning of 21st century we are faced with a new universal moral doctrine that mobilises resources supposedly to improve the universal human condition, in some cases with United Nations intervention, in some under the banner of NATO, and in others with coalitions brought together under United States leadership. But, how much have this proliferation of so-called just wars and this enthusiasm for ethical, democratic and humanitarian values benefited the populations that are exposed to violence and suffering on a huge scale?The testimony of David Rieff, who has been writing about human catastrophes over all these years, reveals the hypocrisy of the interventions, the manipulation of the international organisms, and the aid trap that, on many occasions, is no more than an excuse to act as a salve for our suffering consciences when faced with the reality of the victims.With the collaboration of Debate (Random House Mondadori) and La Magrana (RBA Llibres)

Contemporary crises stir consciences and cause writers to initiate actions that go beyond the strict limits of art. Can a literary work offer solutions to great problems, or was that never their function? Will literature always be free of responsibilities? Do writers have an ethical responsibility? The initial starting-point can be no other than to ask ourselves what value society places on literature today, and whether it still conserves its capacity to influence things.In collaboration with the PEN Català 5

Thanks to the technology offered by the Internet 2.0, the cities that form part of the Anella Cultural are joining Kosmopolis 08 to participate in a debate to discuss the current state of literature and culture seen through the eyes of authors, critics and intellectuals who will make interventions from their respective territories. Our aim is to make the voice of the smaller cities heard at a debate that will make reflections on the relationship between literature and the great problems that are facing society today: war, terrorism, migrations...

Dave Eggers. 826 NationalPresenter: Enrique MurilloFriday 24, 6.30 p.m. – Proteus Hall. English, with simultaneous translation.

Dave Eggers is a writer, publisher and founder of 826 National, a non-profit-making organisation with different offices around the United States that aims to introduce children aged between six and eighteen to literature and to nurture reading skills. The network endeavours to cover the lacunae in the education of these young people, offering individual attention and a series of free-of-charge activities with out-of-school programmes, excursions and writing workshops. With the help of these pupils and the voluntary tutors – among them some well-known writers – Eggers publishes, on an annual basis, The Best American Non Required Reading, an eclectic collection of stories, comic strips, reports and humorous pieces that do not fall within the bounds of the accepted canons.

Dave Eggers will speak of his firm commitment to the daily work of schools and teachers, and of his main goal: to reduce learning difficulties among students and to involve them in reading and writing so as to improve their comprehension and stimulate their creativity.

Hari Kunzru. Literature and Revolution: 40 Years OnPresenter: Valerie MilesSaturday 25, 6.30 p.m. - Proteus Hall. English, with simultaneous translation.

Starting out from a reading of his latest book, My Revolutions (2008), Kunzru will analyse the idea of committed literature from a contemporary perspective. What is the relationship between politics and literary writing? Does the idea of revolution still have any sense in today’s world, whether it is from the standpoint of the artistic avant-garde or that of radical political change?

Taking the May ’68 revolution as his starting point, Kunzru sets out to explore how idealism became violence and ended up as indifference.

Donna Leon and Juan José López de Uralde. EcologismSaturday 25, 7.30 p.m. – Proteus Hall. Spanish and English, with simultaneous translation.

In this dialogue with Juan José López de Uralde (Director of Greenpeace in Spain), Donna Leon will explain her passion for ecological causes, which have gained an increasing presence in her novels. If in the first novels in the saga featuring Commissioner Brunetti, now almost a decade old, the theme was treated with certain caution, in the most recent ones ecology occupies a central position. Over the years, Brunetti has gone from being mildly irritated to consider that the deterioration of our planet has become one of our most pressing problems.

Like Brunetti, more and more people have begun to consider the damage that we have done to the planet, although, ironically, we take the plane to talk about it.

Tzvetan Todorov. War Against TerrorismPresenter: Josep RamonedaSunday 26, 5.30 p.m. - Proteus Hall. French, with simultaneous translation.

The Government of the United States of America – along with several European governments – has been engaged for some years now in what they call the war against terrorism. Yet this viewpoint gives rise to a number of reservations: the “enemy” is ill-identified and the struggle against it does not look like a war. The consequences of the policy are disturbing: they lead to a partiality for the advantages of the moment to the detriment of seeking the truth, to increased levels of violence, and to an acceptance of any means, in particular torture, to serve the ends. This has been admitted for the first time by a democratic government, in the name of arguments that should be carefully scrutinised.

3.2 JOURNALISM XXIThe age of corporate journalism, dominant in the 20th century, has entered into crisis. The impact of the Internet, with the subsequent appearance of blogs, wikis and podcasts, the emergence of free newspapers, the ecological impact of the paper-printed press, the discussions about copyright and the speed of the changes imposed by the new media require detailed debate embracing journalism and all its different genres.

What is the challenge facing professional journalism in this situation? What adaptation is necessary? What approach should be taken to these challenges in this age of access and participation?

Journalism XXI considers the crisis of corporate journalism and the changes that are taking place within the profession due to the impact of the new media, as well as the difficulties facing investigative journalism as we enter the new century.

Journalism in the 21st century will be much different from that formulated by the large media corporations that have dominated until now. The profession’s future depends both on the content of its information and the extent to which it can establish and stimulate dialogue with readers. 7

Today’s readers are not only processors and receivers; they also emit news, trends and new forms of participation. Nowadays, anyone can launch a blog or discuss

issues in chat forums. We are entering the Journalism 2.0 age, the age of participatory journalism.

What is at stake is a profound change that affects us all. How do we generate and consume information in the age of the digital society? What is the real influence of these changes on the development of democracy?

Since Tom Wolfe published his manifesto The New Journalism thirty years ago, a large group of writers has continued to develop North American literary journalism based on investigative reporting. Today, a group of outstanding authors including the likes of Adrian Le-Blanc, Richard Preston and Susan Orlean represents the maturity the style has evolved into, and which has become known as new-new journalism.

What difficulties does investigative journalism face as we enter the new century? What paradoxes emerge when we investigate in the age of access? What is the situation in the European context? These are some of the questions that require us to open up the debate on the dilemmas facing investigative journalism in the 21st century.

Because of the boom in new technologies and the fusions of media companies, journalism is facing a dramatic historical moment: How can it keep the momentum behind projects of journalistic investigation next to the challenge of corporate journalism? How can it overcome national barriers in a political context that is increasingly European and global? How can it get more out of the possibilities of new technologies to produce quality content? What limitations and challenges are raised by participatory journalism?

3.3 POETRY TODAY. Modern Tradition and the Spoken Word

After the remarkable renaissance that oral poetry is enjoying and the polemic that has arisen within the modern poetic tradition, there is a clear need to undertake a critical analysis of this phenomenon.

Poetry that follows the modern tradition is suffering not only from a crisis of readers, but also from a thematic and aesthetic crisis, and questions arise as to whether the form has become sterile and obsolete. Meanwhile, genres like hip hop, spoken word and sound poetry are revitalising oral poetry, introducing new forms of diction and powerful social content.

Beyond merely taking irreducible or confrontational positions, the Café Europa sessions will attempt to ascertain the nature of poetry today through the communicating vessels – and mutual learning – that are modern tradition and spoken word.

3.4 HOMAGE TO AGUSTÍ BARTRAThere is no better framework than Kosmopolis for commemorating the centenary of the birth of the poet, narrator, playwright, critic and translator, Agustí Bartra i Lleonart (1908 – 1982). Kosmopolis provides the natural setting for reading, discussing and celebrating his work because Bartra embodies the spirit of being up-to-the-minute, plurality, universalism, debate and innovation that this International festival of Literature stands for. In fact, Bartra was one of the people who constructed the cultural, literary and social context from which emerged the discourse of modernity and contemporaneity in which we still participate today. In order to remember our versatile forerunner, we have organised a range of different activities: a more intimate and personal event offering Bartra’s human and intellectual profile; a debate on Bartra’s modernity and relevance today; and a more festive and fun event so the public can directly savour the high-voltage power of his poetry.

In a haiku verse written late in his life, Barta bequeathed to us a faithful self-portrait: “A poet. The man. / I am one still wanting birth. / Fire and measure too.” Roger Bartra, in conversation with D. Sam Abrams, will evoke the human, intellectual and artistic personality of his father. Roger Bartra’s testimony is of twofold interest: the objective value of the judgement of a first-rate analyst and the subjective value of the more intimate bond. The public is invited to participate in the discussion.

The figure and work of Agustí Bartra leave no one indifferent. We have therefore decided to open them up to debate in the form of a panel of three well-known writers. They will discuss Bartra’s oeuvre in ascertaining the present-day relevance and modernity of his aesthetic and intellectual proposals. The public is invited to participate in the debate.

Poetry does not seek or need intermediaries. Neither is it some exquisite and other-worldly thing that cannot survive in an everyday environment. Poetry is linked to life as we live it. Kosmopolis therefore wishes to offer people the chance to make a direct connection, out in the street, with Bartra’s poetry. Actors and actresses will be circulating in the Festival premises reciting Bartra’s poetry aloud. You won’t need to go looking for them because they will find you. This is a sample of the most vital and modern Bartra.

3.5 BALLARD SPECIALTo complement the exhibition Autopsy of the new millennium, devoted to J.G. Ballard, Kosmopolis 08 presents two sessions on the work of this British writer and his influence on the contemporary cultural imaginary.

The first session will explore on the influence of Ballard’s work on the Latin world, whilst the second, focusing on the Anglo-Saxon world, will propose a dialogue about the different ways in which his literature has found an echo in new generations of writers who have recognised the visionary dimension in his works.

With its traumatic dissection of the 20th century, J. G. Ballard’s literature has contributed the necessary keys for understanding an immediate future that is beginning to reveal itself around us in the form of a video-monitored, aseptic anti-utopia in which violence is almost a balm. Simon Sellars, creator of the page www.ballardian.com, V. Vale, editor of the counterculture magazine Re/Search and compiler of a notable Ballard bibliography, and the writer Bruce Sterling, a voice of reference among cyberpunk sensibilities, will meet in this panel session to discuss the legacy left by Ballard’s works in different creative milieus, and the different Ballardian features of the contemporary landscape.

J. G. Ballard’s literature tends to be attributed with a high degree of visionary precision, but the efficacy of this power of prediction is sustained by a singular voice and a tremendously important poetic dimension. This panel will explore the literary quality of J. G. Ballard’s work and the totally insular position it occupies within the generic discourse of science fiction, from the standpoints of Francisco Porrúa, Ballard’s first publisher in Spanish, the writers Agustín Fernández Mallo and Toby Litt – who explicitly paid tribute to Ballard in his novel Corpsing (published in Spanish as Muerte en directo) – the translator Marcial Souto, and the head of the Culture section of www.adn.es and author of the blog “La Petite Claudine”, Marta Peirano.

3.6 LITERATURE AND HYPERMEDIA II Kosmotica studies, processes and articulates the influence of the new media on literature, literature on the new media and the cultural changes implied by this vertiginous process. Since his pioneering hyperfiction days at Brown University in the early 1990s, Robert Coover has been reflecting on the destiny of the word in cyberspace with essays like “The End of Books” (1992) and “Homeward Bound: Adventures in Mot-Town” (2002) and working, above all, with the creation of CaveWriting, a new 3D spatial hypertext authoring system in immersive virtual reality.

He will be speaking in this year’s Kosmopolis about the latest advances in the “Cave”, which he will illustrate with a demonstration of CaveWriting, while also describing his path-breaking experiences in virtual reality.

From one day to the next, the librarians are forced to reconsider their identity and their function and they must re-appropriate the complete cycle of generation, circulation, conservation and the distribution of content and information among users. They must use the technology at hand because their clients, all members of the googleboom, are not used to information flowing unambiguously nor that the criteria of classification and evaluation can come exclusively from those who dedicate themselves to the task. 123.7 COMICS, LITERATURE AND MUSIC

The comic has not always enjoyed the recognition it deserves as an artistic discipline. Now, ignoring all the clichés, K08 takes an unprejudiced new look at the so-called Ninth Art. This fresh approach revolves around three activities: a lecture, a workshop and an unusual “animated concert” at which leading authors draw their cartoons to the accompaniment of live music.

In this session, the electronic atmosphere generated by the band Neosol accompanies the cartoons drawn live on a large screen by the artists Sonia Pulido, Calpurnio and Max. This is, then, an unusual “animated concert” embracing a graphic and musical recreation of a well-known participatory micro-story entitled “The last man on Earth sits alone in a room. There is a knock on the door…”.

Delicate strokes of a brush define a gesture in black against a white background. The figures that represent the body of a woman transcend the limits of the frame, the illustration and the observer's look: a smooth movement that identifies a mode of expression. It is a dance, without music or, better said, one that follows the melody and the rhythm contained inside the drawing as the extreme end of the chain that joins the brain and the hand.

Edmond Baudoin. Comic Workshop: Piero Saturday 25, 6.30 p.m. – Pan Klub. French, with consecutive translation.

According to the French cartoonist André Juillard, when Edmond Baudoin draws it is as if he were writing. This coming and going, without transition between word and image, defines the essence of the narrative of an author whose work is continuously reflected in the multiculturalism and generational crisis of France today. With the analysis and interpretation of Piero, his last published book in Spain, Baudoin brings us closer to the keys of the renewal of the language of the comic strip as a synthesis between fiction and reality.

3.8 ORAL LITERATURE Defending the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO) and vindicating the “philosophical story” along with oral storytelling have been constants in Kosmopolis since its inception.

In K08, we shall be continuing to explore the new forms of urban orality such as hip hop, the spoken word and the Slam Contests. Besides the performances of some well-known poets and slammers, there will also be a workshop on narrative and stage techniques with a member of the Nuyorican Poets Café Team, and a panel discussion on the future of slam.

Fish Vargas, one of New York’s Nuyorican Poets and one of the fathers of slam poetry, will be giving this workshop on narrative and performing. It will offer the participants resources for creating attractive and rhythmical texts along with the interpretative stage techniques for learning to capture the audience’s attention.

John Giorno, one of the most important contemporary American poets, is also a key figure in Spoken Word and performance poetry in New York. In his performance Everyone Gets Lighter, John Giorno uses neologisms taken from real life to transform a personal relationship with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and William Burroughs to create a fascinating audio-visual experience.

"Everyone Gets Lighter" is also one of the nine poems included in the film by the Italian director Antonello Faretta in Nine Poems in Basilicata (1973), which is being presented in Canal Alfa.

Roger Bernat. Public DomainThursday 23, 5.45 p.m. – Kosmopolis Patio. Catalan. Public Domain dispenses with the actor as the focal point of the show, leaving the public as the only participant. The aim is not to transform the spectator into the actor but to take into account the narrative possibilities of the group by means of statistical tools. Spectators will constitute part of a story without needing to expose themselves as individuals on a stage that will have as many actors as there are people attending the show.

Silenced voices, Rescued voices

This small exhibition features a general introduction and a list of 30 persecuted writers, accompanied by brief biographies. This selection of representative authors is designed to raise public awareness about imprisoned writers, with particular emphasis on those offered safe havens in refuge cities (coordinated by ICORN), such as Salem Zenia (Barcelona). Letters ready to be sent to national governments protesting against the detention of particular writers, and postcards to be sent directly to the imprisoned author, will be available.

The show will also include files on historic cases (Ken Saro Wiwa, Aung San Suu Kyi, Anna Politkovskaya, Gao Xingjan) and those currently included in the International PEN Case List.

4.2 PROTEUS HALL

Proteus, the ancient mythological divinity who could change form voluntarily and has become a privileged symbol of artistic creation, defines this space of the Festival. A scenario that hosts the renewal of traditional formats, such as conferences or talks, with the new inter-generic hybrids, avant-garde performances, the spoken word, concerts and battles of the verses.

Robyn Hitchcock. Speaking of FantasySaturday 25, 9.30 p.m. - Proteus Hall. English.

Former leader of the The Soft Boys and one of the most incisive voices of pop today, Hitchcock is a high-risk author and caustic narrator who evokes the more benign forms of madness. The wide-ranging career of this musician, writer, painter and sporadic actor is marked by a heightened melodic sense expressed in such resounding albums as I Often Dream of Trains (1984).

Hitchcock’s acid-pop vision constructed over iconoclastic fantasy goes with a sense of humour that makes him unique. He rounds off his works with small stories written in the margins of the music and in the booklets of his discs. Always tending to fantasy and surrealism, and apparently minimalist – only bass and guitar – he is coming to Kosmopolis to give us a run-through of the best of his repertoire, the vanishing point of modern pop.

Documentary directed by Martin Scorsese that narrates Bob Dylan’s life and his impact on American popular music and 20th-century culture. It centres on the beginning of his career, on his leap to fame in the 1960s and on the problems he encountered in his move from folk music to rock. Among the interviewees are Dylan himself, Allen Ginsberg, Dave Van Ronk and Joan Baez. In addition, there is recorded archive material (some unpublished) by D.A. Pennebaker, Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol.

4.3 CAFÉ EUROPACafé Europa is an itinerant literary café that toured different European cities before being presented at the first edition of Kosmopolis 02. A literary café with readings, informal lectures and performances in which each author puts forward his/her own literary creed through a short text. Live music and short readings complement the sessions along with active audience participation.

This lecture starts out from the conviction that one of the decisive moments for European literary modernity was the day when somebody sat down at a table in some public establishment, asked for a coffee and then took out a newspaper or a book and started reading or, still more, pulled out a notebook and began to write. One must pay careful attention to these individuals who, almost without realising it, became the Café people, because among them are some of the names that have transformed – from these selfsame tables – the very idea of the writer and also the way of thinking cities, and thinking about them.

In parallel with Kosmopolis 2008, the art centre of La Panera in Lleida, is holding the exhibition “En cualquier lugar, en ningún lugar” (In Any Place, in No Place). With José Miguel Cortés as its director, the exhibition is structured like a storybook. The section “Urban Scenes” offers some reflections on the work of Jack Kerouac.

From Lleida and through the Anella Project, J. M. Cortés will be organising a brief visit to the exhibition, after which Eloy Fernández-Porta will conduct a readers’ club on Kerouac’s On the Road, with the joint participation of readers from La Panera and others who are Friends of the CCCB, from Kosmopolis

194.5 ALPHA CHANNELAlpha Channel is the first experimental TV channel drawing its inspiration from literature. The four editions of Kosmopolis in Barcelona have proved that it is

possible to conceive a cable or Internet channel based on an outstanding audiovisual production which generally doesn’t fit in conventional channels. Documentaries, fiction films, video poetry, mostly not previously shown in Barcelona, have defined a unique programme.

Kosmotica II is the natural evolution of Hyperiment, Lector Mundi and Kosmotica I, presented in past Kosmopolis editions.  It makes reference to a coming together of media which are in the process of expansion, but also to imaginary and recreational disciplines.  It is a space dedicated to learning and participation which delves into hypertexts, the emergence of electronic literature, the development of digital interactive narratives, the dissemination of formats, changes in the way we read and write and the transition toward hypermedia. If domotics deals with technological developments in the control and management of domestic space, then kosmotics is an experimental discipline investigating, processing and implementing the influence of new media on literature, literature in new media and the cultural changes implied by this dizzying process of convergence.

4.7 CCCB ARCHIVE – World. A Cosmopolitan ViewFrom 22 October 2008 to 1 June 2009. CCCB exhibition hours

CCCB Archive is a multimedia thematic archive that makes available to the public the collection it has accumulated over the CCCB’s years of existence. K08 presents the project for the second time, this year with the title World. A Cosmopolitan View, in which it will be possible to consult whole range of material in our collection pertaining to cosmopolitanism and, for the first time, the Kosmopolis Archive, which contains all the material generated over the four Kosmopolis festivals held to date.
