Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. !The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of the Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government has contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and was factored into the cost of the excursion. !Our yearly magazine Koolangarra is available through pre-orders with payment. We will only print the number of magazines for which we have received money. The cost of the magazine this year is $20. It is in full colour and will include Presentation Night. Families will receive their magazine prior to the end of the year. Orders and payment are taken prior to Presentation Night (6th December) and at Presentation Night. There are no late orders after Presentation Night. Payments can be made at the front office.

It always amazes me just how busy schools are at the end of the year. Schools are busy places any time of the year but everything always seems like it is on overload towards the end. You can see the light at the end of the tunnel but there are so many obstacles and hurdles to dodge and jump before it gets closer. These things are reports, Presentation Night, finalising planning for 2017, budgeting, milestone planning for the School Plan, training and evidence collecting for the Department. !One aspect that is completed is our Kindergarten transition program. For the past ten school weeks, Mrs Lawrence and Mrs Chegwyn were busy ensuring our prospective 2017 Kindergarten students are prepared for the school environment and they were ably assisted by Mrs Knight, Mrs Buchanan, Ms Cook and our Year 5 students. I am pleased to say that our children are ready and eager to start! They left last Friday with smiles on their faces and with their new library bags, personalised with their name and drawings of themself and complete with a lead pencil, picture book and a portfolio of work documenting their transition to Kindergarten. The children sat with their family members examining each page carefully. With all the hard work put into these portfolios, seeing the smiles on both the child’s and parent’s face made it all worthwhile. Thank you to all staff who made transition possible and we look forward to seeing our children in 2017.

!!!!!!!!!This week, we had the pleasure of hearing the speeches of our candidates for 2017 School Captain. Speaking in front of peers is nerve wracking enough without having your family and the whole school present. Congratulations to all students and I know for sure the race for the captaincy is very tight! Look out Presentation Night. !

Last week, students from Year 4 competed in the Todd Woodbridge Cup Final at the Sydney Olympic Tennis Centre. 2016 is the inaugural year of this competition and it is based on the popular modified tennis format Hotshots. Our students

competed against 25 other teams from across NSW. We are pleased to announce our team placed equal 5th! Well done team, this is a wonderful achievement in our first year of competing in tennis.

!Mrs Doak, like all other teachers, is very proud of our students when they are excelling in their work. Mrs Doak had the pleasure, while I was on the phone, of seeing work from our students in 2M. These students are excelling in their spelling. Congratulations to Nate Symons, Angus Frewen, Addyson Vernon, Isabelle Marsh, Lilly Thomas and Braidy Cork. Well done students and keep up the wonderful effort.

Mrs Chegwyn introduced a new element to the Playgroup program this week with the borrowing of picture books from her Playgroup library. Each child received a library bag, complete with their name for borrowing each week. This is a wonderful extension of the program that Mrs Chegwyn offers our community and is a free resource. Come and join Playgroup. It’s on every Monday from 10-11.30am and everyone is welcome.

!At Kootingal Public School, our second break is time dedicated to afternoon tea and is a supervised eating time. Each Friday, when the canteen is open, students must have their own second break food. Once the bell is rung signalling the end of the supervised eating time, students may then access additional food from the canteen as a treat. It is important our students have a substantial second break eating time to ensure they have the energy for the remainder of the afternoon.

Our lessons continued this week in the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program. This week, the students focused on the core value effective learners - Following Instructions. During Wednesday’s morning assembly, the students were impressive with their recall of the difference between a request and an instruction and how instructions make our life easier. Next week, our lessons focus on the role of the teacher and student.
