Remyelination (in MS) Theiler-Virus-EAE: natural IgM (mAb SCH94.03) >> IgG antibodies bind on surface
antigens of oligodendrozytes and induce remyelination (Rodriguez et al 1987;Rodriguez et al 1990; Asakura et al 1996; Warrington 2000, Bieber et al 2000, Mitsunaga 2002, Pirko 2004, Warrington 2004, Warrington 2007)

IVIg and Remyelination • Theiler-Virus-EAE:
natural IgM (mAb SCH94.03) >> IgG antibodies bind on surface antigens of
oligodendrozytes and induce remyelination
(Rodriguez et al 1987; Rodriguez et al 1990; Asakura et al 1996; Warrington 2000, Bieber et al 2000, Mitsunaga 2002, Pirko 2004, Warrington 2004,
Warrington 2007)
• 7S IVIg studies in multiple sclerosis:
Noseworthy et al. Ann Neurol 1998: no effect in optic neuritis
Noseworthy et al. Ann Neurol 1997: no effect on motor deficits
Stangel et al. JNNP 2000: no effects on motor improvement.
• reasons:
- over-enthusiastic study designs/outcome parameters
- polyclonal IgG’s have no influence on proliferation, differentiation or migration of
oligodendrocytes (Stangel et al. J Neuroimm 1999)
- natural antibodies = IgM versus 7S IVIg are >90% IgG
