PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI... Once upon a time, a very nice hotel in Palm Beach did something very nice for me – and for the other clergy on Palm Beach – they gave us all a complimentary membership to the hotel’s beach club and brand new fitness center.I’ll admit it is a nice perk. Being a creature of

habit, I typically work out late in the afternoon, finishing up just after the hotel’s beach bar closes.Upon finishing my workout, I empty a packet of recovery drink into a plastic bottle and look for ice and water. But since the beach bar is in the middle of closing, the large reservoir of ice water kept on the edge of the bar usually has been put away, forcing me to either add warm water to the bottle (yech!) or ask one of the bar attendants cleaning up to put some ice and water in my bottle. I ask and they always say yes, even though they are closed. The other day, however, the routine was broken. After asking one of the women behind the bar if she could fill up my bottle, she said to the other woman working with her “He is the only one I don’t mind doing this for.” The other woman then replied, “I agree.”I didn’t understand, so I asked them to clarify. “You are the only person who asks us nicely,” she said. “Everyone else tells us to give them water; you ask us nicely. It seemed impossible to me but they swore it was true.I’m not sharing this to toot my own horn. (Trust me, I have my grumpy moments, as well.) But it was distressing to hear that common courtesy is - seemingly - in such short supply.Everyday kindness might seem like a trifle, but it is not. There is a famous saying in the Mishnah that states: “Al shlosha d’varim ha’olam omed: al ha-Torah, v’al ha-avodah, v’al g’milut chassadim - The world depends on three things: Torah, Prayer, and Acts of Kindness." (Pirkei Avot 3:21). Notice that the rabbis place Acts of Kindness equal to the Torah. And so should we.Most of the moments of holiness in our lives happen on the street, not in the synagogue. Being kind and courteous are sacred acts, little moments of prayerful action that we bring to the world everyday by means of our countless interactions with others. When you think about it, it is really quite elegant and beautiful. All we need to do is live our lives accordingly. It’s a new day, people. Time to be kind. (Or at least a little more so.)

B’Shalom,

Rabbi Michael Resnick

Every week starting just before Pesach many of our members migrate to visit their families located in areas around the country and the world. Occasionally they come back for a few weeks to Florida before going away for the summer but most of the time they don’t return to Palm Beach until after the High

Holidays in the Fall.Erev Rosh Hoshana this year in on October 1st so, hopefully, we will have a large turnout. The attendance in season is usually excellent on Friday evening and for Shabbat morning services especially when we have a dinner, a speaker, or enhanced music. Several times during the summer months we do not have a minyan on Friday night. We have just under 400 families that belong to our Shul and we should always have a minyan when we have services! We have services on Monday and Thursday mornings all year round and even in season we occasionally struggle at times to get 10. In order to read the Torah and for us to say the Mourner’s Kaddish we must have a minyan. It is easy to take services for granted but nothing worthwhile should ever be taken for granted. There is a small Shul in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. I went there for Shabbat Services every July and August growing up. We still go there every summer. They have struggled for a minyan my entire life. When the 10th person walks into the Sanctuary the other nine people smile in acknowledgment. It is a lay-run congregation and the Torah reader is an attorney who drives over 30 miles to the Synagogue each Saturday. He grew up there before moving away and no one else can read the Torah. So for the past 20 years he returns each weekend during the summer and reads from the Chomesh as one of the congregants follows along in the Torah. Everyone pitches in to keep the Synagogue alive in this small bungalow community. We should all take great joy in helping to make a minyan. We are a community of friends held together by traditions that are thousands of years old. If you can come regularly it would be incredible. If you can only make it once a month we will be happy to see you. Even during the Summer we continue to have a wonderful Oneg on Fridays and a great Kiddush following services on Shabbat. Let us keep the candle burning at our Shul all summer long.Whether you are staying in South Florida, traveling up North or voyaging across the oceans I want to wish everyone a healthy, relaxing and wonderful summer filled with joy from family and friends.

B’Shalom,Rob Gordon

Temple members known to us as Bob and Debbie have been collecting contemporary ceramic works of art since the 1970s. Debbie, a Flint native, has ties to the art institute having enjoyed ceramics classes there in her youth. The Burgers have built an impressive art collection using the knowledge gained through studying and visiting exhibitions, galleries, studios, private collections and taking studio classes. Since 2005 they have donated nearly 250 works of art to the FIA, including over 180 ceramic works and 40 works on paper.Function, Form and Fantasy only shows a fraction of the total collection. The ceramics range from bold, expressionistic forms to simple, elegant motifs, from sizes smaller than 3 inches tall to larger-than-life. Inspired by the beautiful forms, colors, and innovative techniques used by well-known ceramicists, art works in the collection are both thought-provoking and mysterious, blurring the lines between craft and fine art. With the same sense of responsibility that museums have to the public to care for the objects entrusted to them, Bob and Debbie consider themselves caretakers, instead of simply owners of the artworks they have collected. They declare that it is their intention to share these works with others now and in the future, rather than keeping the art all to themselves. It is this generous impulse that has brought about this exhibition selected from their exemplary collection.

D'VAR HOCHMA(Words of Wisdom)

Blintzes Recipe Saturday, April 2, 2016

The festival of Shavuot ("Weeks") is a holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan (seven weeks after Passover), this year starting at sundown on Saturday, June 11 and ending on Monday, June 13. Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to the entire Israelite nation assembled at Mount Sinai, although the association between the giving of the Torah (Matan Torah) and Shavuot is not explicit in the Biblical text. The holiday is one of the Shalosh Regalim, the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals. It marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer.

Traditionally, the Book of Ruth, part of the section of the Bible known as Writings, is read during services on Shavuot. Ruth is a young Moabite woman who married an Israelite man. When her husband died, she followed her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Israel and adopted the Jewish faith and people as her own. To feed herself and Naomi, she gleaned in the field of Boaz, a rich man. Boaz is taken with her, and eventually they marry. Among their descendants is King David. The theme of Ruth’s conversion to Judaism is central to this story. Ruth is often considered to be the model for all who “choose” or convert to Judaism—accepting the Torah, just as Jews accepted the Torah at Mt. Sinai.Scholars who trace all Jewish customs and rituals to practices common among various ethnic groups claim that spring harvest festivals characteristically featured dairy dishes, perhaps because cheese was produced during that season. Although everyone agrees that the food of choice for Shavuot is cheese (most typically blintzes) or a Sephardic equivalent such as burekas (cheese-filled dough pockets), there are differences of opinion as to why it is a custom. Some derive the practice directly from scripture, saying we eat dairy to symbolize the “land flowing with milk and honey” promised to the Israelites.

I learned how to make Blintzes by watching my mother-in-law, Millie Feldberg, and writing down the measurements. She showed me how to turn the “bletlach” (made in a special pan) onto a linen towel and then filling them with her special blend of farmer's cheese and other ingredients. To this day, I measure, she didn't!

- Mickey Feldberg

Shavuot

GRANDMA'S BLINTZES

INGREDIENTS1 cup flour1 1/2 cups water2 Tbsp melted butter4 eggsPinch salt

FILLING:1 lb. farmer cheese1/4 lb. cottage cheese1/4 lb. cream cheese2 eggs2 Tbsp sugar1/2 tsp vanilla

Stir water gradually into flour to form a paste. Add butter, eggs, salt and beat until smooth. Heat and grease a well-seasoned 6" crepe or frying pan. Pour a thin layer of batter into pan, making sure entire surface is covered. Pour excess batter back into bowl. Fry until crepe starts to curl at edges, then invert onto a clean linen towel, fried side up. Mix all filling ingredients together. Place a rounded tablespoon of filling in center of crepe. Fold sides over filling, then fold top and bottom, covering filling completely. Can be frozen at this point. To serve, fry on both sides in butter until golden brown.

Makes about 20.

WOMEN’S LEAGUEPRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

WOMEN’S LEAGUE "Not for Women Only". Men, if a program piques your interest, please join us!

During Shavuot we read the Book of Ruth. It is the story of Naomi and her Jewish family who, due to an extreme famine, left Canaan and went to live in the non-Jewish country of Moab. Eventually, her two sons died, as did her husband. One of her sons had

married Ruth, a Moab woman. Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem, her former home. Ruth was very loyal to Naomi and was determined to accompany her and become a Jewess herself. From here comes the famous quotation: “Wither thou goest, I will go. Thy people shall be my people and thy god, my God.'' In Canaan, Ruth eventually married Boaz and had a child. Ruth was the great-grandmother of King David. From the story of Ruth, we find two basic themes emerging. The first is the concept of the acceptance of the stranger among us. Ruth, a non-Jew, was a stranger in a strange, Jewish land. Through her acceptance emerged the creation of our dynasty starting with King David. In today’s world, we continue to struggle with a challenge of our time – “strangers” among us through intermarriage. Many of us have learned that it is incumbent upon us as individuals and as a community to welcome the non-Jewish spouses among us.The other theme that I recognize in the story of Ruth is valuing the strength and determination of a woman alone. Ruth was an example of a woman alone taking responsibility for her life. How many such women do we know? The giving of the Torah on Shavuot also has a basic theme. It is very significant that the response of the people of Israel to God when receiving the Ten Commandments was “We will do and we will listen.” Note the readiness to do even before knowing what was needed. So too, in our day, does this philosophy prevail. At times, the needs of others are so great that we are faced with a tremendous obligation. We are grateful for a strong, vital Jewish community, our synagogues and Federation agencies, which are there in those times of need.Summer will soon be here. As in past years, Women’s League looks forward to offering our community a variety of programs that provide the opportunity to be entertained and enjoy each other’s company.

Have a great summer!

ADULT EDUCATION Saturday, April 2, 2016

This year we introduced Wednesday Night Live. This was a series of lectures beginning with Hussein Aboubakhr sponsored by Stand with Us. Our next speaker was Bret Stephens of the Wall St Journal, a joint AIPAC /Temple Emanu-El venture, followed by Matt Levitt from The Washington Institute and Alan Mendoza of the Henry Jackson Society. Each of these lectures attracted visitors and members alike and a lively Q&A followed each talk. The final Wednesday Night Live event, was brought by the Fellowship of Christians and Jews with a panel led by Caroline Breder-Watts of WLRN with Leslie Gray Streeter, Rabbi Resnick and Dr. Ira Rubinstein.

Varied speakers on Shabbat included JTS Chancellor Arnold Eisen, Dr. Robert Watson, Dr. Robert Rabil and Proffessor Michael Alkan, MD of Ben Gurion University (part of the Israeli team in disaster relief). And JNF brought us Hal Linden for Sunday brunch when he explained his love for Israel.

Sixty years after fleeing Vienna, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), an elderly Jewish woman, attempts to reclaim family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. Among them is a famous portrait of Maria's beloved Aunt Adele: Gustave Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." With the help of young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), Maria embarks upon a lengthy legal battle to

recover this painting and several others, but it will not be easy, for Austria considers them national treasures.

When his estranged brother dies suddenly, Jake Lever is confronted with an old Jewish custom. In days past, a man was expected to marry his deceased brother's childless widow, but it is now customary to perform a ceremony releasing the pair from the obligation. During the Halizah ceremony, Jake feels uncomfortable renouncing his brother's memory. Additionally, Leah wishes to escape the confines of her

orthodox community and avoid her mother's matchmaking. On the spur of the moment, Leah and Jake decide to enter into a platonic marriage of convenience.

Rochel is an Orthodox Jew, and Nasira a Muslim of Syrian origin. They are both beautiful young teachers at a public school in Brooklyn. They also have something else in common - they are going through the process of getting "arranged marriages" through their respective religious and traditional customs. With both family pressure on the one hand, and the rejection of traditional values by the outside

world on the other, Rochel and Nasira will have to rely on each other and their friendship to pull through this difficult time of their lives, striving to be strong women in charge of their own happiness, while keeping their deep religious and cultural convictions.

Wednesdays, besides our successful trip through “Bible Stories You May Not Know” with Rabbi Barbara Steinberg and iEngage 2 with Rabbi Resnick, we had Joshua Karsh from AIPAC speaking on the current state of the Middle East, Rabbi Jack Riemer speaking on ethical wills and Lee Pollock speaking about Winston Churchill and the Jews.

Shalom,Well another school year has come to a close for Rothman Religious School. The year flew by as the children learned all about our Jewish holidays, how to read Hebrew, prayers for Shabbat services, Israel, the Holocaust and so much more. The students were engaged in projects that

taught them about Jews around the world, modern Jewish history, life cycle events, and other Judaic studies. They also experienced hands-on lessons in Jewish culture by cooking holiday foods, crafts, and participating in holiday rituals. Their studies took them off campus to learn about Ann Frank and to fulfill the Mitzvah of caring for the poor by organizing a food drive and visiting the Alpert Jewish Family and Children’s Service agency. Our Yala! class focused this year on attitudes toward “teen “ issues, Israel, current events, and appreciation of Jewish ideals and morals. The class was also part of the twinning program and connected with a class in Israel. They learned about each other’s similarities and differences. We would like to thank our creative staff whose love of Judaism was shown in every class throughout the year. They provided a warm and nurturing learning environment for our students. Thank you Mrs. Morgan, Morah Mina, Morah Randi, Morah Ina, and Rabbi Greene for all you do. Please be on the lookout for the Rothman Religious School registration form. If you did not already receive our information or know anyone that is interested, please contact us in the office by phone or email.Have a safe summer!

B’Shalom, Ellen Silverberg

EDUCATION DIRECTORShalom!Another amazing year has come to a close for Beach USY and Kadima. Our teens have engaged in social, religious, educational, and social action events throughout the year. The youth of Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach are viewed as leaders of the HaNegev

Region of USY by USYers and staff alike. We are very excited to announce that our very own Steven Ginsberg will be the 2016-2017 HaNegev Membership and Kadima Vice President. We are looking forward to all the great things that he will do for Beach and HaNegev. He will be responsible for increasing membership at the regional level as well as regional Kadima programming. Temple Emanu-El offers three separate programing opportunities under the heading of Beach Youth groups - Pre-Kadima for grades 3-5, Kadima for grades 6-8, and USY for grades 9-12. All of these groups offer creative and innovative ways to live a Jewish life and stress the importance of Jewish values in our everyday lives. We are looking forward to seeing you all at programs for the Beach Youth Groups, so if you would like to receive more information or know anyone who is interested, please contact us in the office or via e-mail at [email protected]. Our registration and calendar information will be going out in the next few weeks. Please be on the lookout for all the great events to come next season. Have a great summer! B’Shalom, Marc Jacobs

Yala! means "let’s go"

8th-12th Graders!

Yala! means “let’s go” and allows teens to do just that, in a fun, social, and enlightening way. This program is designed for post Bar/Bat Mitzvah age students to continue their Jewish education as they grow into responsible Jewish adults. The classes specifically focus on the pressing issues that confront them as they grow up in today’s world. Yala!

CLERGY GRATUITIES

Members inquire from time to time what the proper protocol is for recognizing the Rabbi and Hazzan for officiating at life-cycle events. The answer is that the Rabbi and Hazzan are paid by the Temple to provide those services to our members. Therefore, separate compensation is neither charged nor expected for those services. However, if a person feels motivated to do more, we recommend that contributions be made to the Temple in honor of the Rabbi and/or Hazzan. Each of them also maintains a discretionary fund from which financial assistance is provided to those in our congregation and our larger community who are in need.
