When we return in early October the season will have turned more completely and we should be into consistently warmer weather. We will start the Term with two major events, the House Athletics Carnival for the school and the Kojonup Agricultural Show for the town. Our students have been busy preparing for both of these with a great deal of time spent perfecting long distance jumping and hop, step and jump! There is also a good deal of effort going into preparation for show exhibits and this is something I know many students will also be doing from home. I remember the vast array of private student exhibits I saw last year and I look forward to seeing more of our students exhibiting things that are special to them this year. Homework is a very contentious issue and is a matter under serious review within the school. I have been initiating conversations about the relative merit or lack of merit of homework and we propose to have a new school policy document ready for publication by the end of this year. If you have any thoughts or views on homework I would be very pleased to receive them. It could be anything from a simple “don’t believe in it” to a story about why (or why not) it should be used. You can email me at [email protected] In addition to popular opinion we will be reviewing a number of research reports on this matter and I am attaching the hyperlinks to some of those below. Close to 100 electronic editions of this Newsletter are emailed so I am confident that a significant number of our community can access these documents. These were in response to specific student needs and interests and have applied to this cohort only and are not to be thought of as any long term or permanent changes to curriculum implementation at Kojonup DHS. For 2018 we will return to a much more traditional and complete Year 10 curriculum package with a specific focus on preparing our graduating students for a seamless transition to Year 11 in 2019. FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Dean Gill Dear Parents and Community Members, With three terms down and one term to go we are fast approaching the end of our current academic year. We’ve had many highlights this term such as Dance Week, Book Week, Learning Journey, Camps and other ventures, our students have had the opportunity to engage in many exciting activities this term. In addition to the staff movements we’ve also had Mrs Jayde Hewson win a Principal position at Albany Primary School who shortly after was joined by Mr Edward Melville at the same location. We have welcomed Miss Melanie Joyce into our school who has been with us since the beginning of Week 8 this term. Around the school we have been busily preparing for the sports carnival which will be taking place on the Thursday and Friday of Week 1, Term 4. All the members of our Athletics Committee have been working steadily to ensure the day runs smoothly and hope you will be able to come along and join in the sporting celebrations with us. Term 4 is just around the corner which usually means talk of reports, camps, more in school swimming, graduations, end of year celebrations and ensuring the finalising of learning outcomes for the year. We are hoping for a great Term 4 and the team at Kojonup District High School will all be working hard to ensure our students have a great last term of the year. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Dear Parents and Carers, With this Newsletter we come to the end of the Term and mark the three quarter point in the school year. FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet High school students recently worked with Questacon presenters on a science program based on drones. They used Ipads to see the effects of building bridges based on triangular supports. They then built landing platforms for a drone to land on with only limited amounts of the building materials. Many different designs and ideas were in evidence and most of the platforms were able to support the design weight. Well done high school students. Year 7 students worked with Kindy students to install marsupial nesting boxes at the Myrtle Benn Reserve during Week 9. They set a great example for the younger students and showed great leadership. Many thanks to Mrs Bignell and Mrs Fleay. Also in Week 9 was the Year 8/9 camp. Three staff bravely travelled to the Midwest with a bus full of teenagers. All reports show that students had a great time in spite of a few coming down with the flu. This type of activity is not part of the job description for teachers or other school staff and occurs only because of the commitment to our students shown by Kojonup school staff. Thanks to Mr Terry, Mr McDonald and Miss Johnston for giving up so much of their own time to plan, organise and run this camp. A quick reminder to parents that students should be wearing school uniform to school. Denim is not part of the uniform and is not allowed to be worn by students in any Government High School. Please encourage your child to be properly dressed each day for school before they leave home.

FAREWELL FROM MRS D I would just like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students, parents and community members of Kojonup for all their well wishes for my new position as Principal of Broomehill Primary School. I have been so thankful for everyone's support and kind words as I prepare for a new chapter in my career. I have absolutely loved working at Kojonup DHS and have learnt so much since coming as a second year graduate in 2011. Time sure has flown by and I have so many fantastic memories of my time here. I am so glad that I got the opportunity to teach such wonderful students and work with a fantastic team. It has been extremely hard saying goodbye and I will miss everyone greatly. Aaron and I will continue to live in Kojonup, so I hope I will still see everyone out and about. Best wishes for Term 4. Morgan Dezotti-Hartnup

YEAR 8 AND 9 CAMP

The Year 8 and 9 students have returned from an awesome week camping at Kirkalocka Station, Walga Rock and Geraldton Camp School. Some of the activities that they participated in were: sand boarding, kayaking, swimming, bike riding, shopping and lots of exploring. They all had a wonderful time and thank Mr McDonald, Mr Terry and Miss Johnston for organising the camp. A big thank you to Renew for their generous donation towards their camp.

Thank you Thank you to all of the parents notifying us of their children’s absences in a timely manner. BOOK CLUB ISSUE 6 There's been a bit of a hiccup with our last school order that was due to arrive on 4/9/17. Part of the order has arrived but unfortunately, Australia Post & Scholastic haven't been able to locate the rest of the missing boxes. Scholastic have reordered your items but they will not arrive until the beginning of next term. Sorry for the delay but it will all get here

eventually. 😊

YEAR 4 CAMP

On the 14th and 15

th September 2017, the Year 4 class were able to visit the Perth Zoo and Kings Park. We were lucky

enough to be able to sleep over at the zoo! On the 14th

September, the Year 4’s, excited for the day ahead, jumped on the bus and began the trip to Perth. We were into the lollies as soon as we got on the bus! After stopping in Williams for a quick recess snack and run around, we got back on the bus and headed off for Kings Park.

Finally, after arriving in Armadale, everyone was excited to be in the city. It was a smooth ride through Perth and we soon arrived at Synergy Parkland for lunch. We quickly gobbled down our lunch and ran off to explore. Then, a quick photo, and back on the bus to a different part of Kings Park.

We soon after arrived at Kings Park Botanic Gardens. We again got off the bus and made our way to the boab tree. We had been given a booklet to complete on the botanic gardens. We read the signs and took photos, then headed off to the next spot. After visiting the Lord John Forest statue, and a few other locations, we headed off to the zoo.

When we arrived, we started to unload the trailer behind the bus. When everything was unloaded, we began the long trip to the entrance. When we finally got to the gift shop, everyone was excited to buy the cool things inside. I bought a rock that says “Love” on it for my Mum, a suction toy bat for my brother and a cute, slap band tiger for me.

We all lugged our stuff up to the barn, up the back of the zoo, called “The Homestead.” We dumped our stuff and split into groups and did a thing called, “Race to Save.” My group was Matilda, Layla, Mia and Imogen. The Race to Save is where you have a map and clue sheet and you have to read the clue and work out which endangered animal it is. We worked out the crocodile, the lemurs and cassowary. Then we had to head back off to the main lawn because we ran out of time.

When we got back, we had a sausage sizzle. I had barbeque sauce on mine. We ate our sausages and split up into groups again. I was with Matilda, Layla, Mia, Imogen, Joseph, Manuel, Cooper and Alexander. Our group went with Simone, (the camp leader person), up the back of the zoo, near the barn, into a little room. But, first we changed into long pants.

We all sat down in a circle on the floor. There was a thing in the room. It was a big cloth over some objects. Simone said we had to have a look and then we had to write down all the things we remembered when she put the cloth back over the things. I got all of the things, except one. Then, she explained that some of the objects were used to keep the animals fit and healthy. That is called enrichment.

Then we headed down the front of the zoo and swapped with the other group. We went into a little room that had lots of glass tanks in there. They had snakes and little turtles in them. We had to do a game where you put the animal with its home. After that we got to pat Pepper, the bobtail.

We all walked back up to the homestead, where the other group had already gotten out their mattresses and sleeping bags. We got ours out and I was next to Matilda. Then we went on a night walk. It was so much fun walking around in the dark. When we were near the rhinos, Joseph heard a possum or a mouse and got really scared! We headed back to the homestead and after a while everyone fell asleep.

In the morning we all dressed and brushed our hair. We had toast and cereal for breakfast. I had one piece of vegemite toast. After breakfast we played a game where you were all numbats and you had to find the safest pathway across the map. We then went to do our animal research. I did the quokka. After my group finished, we had a last look around the zoo. We saw most of the African animals. We all gathered back at the main lawn, got our stuff and began the long trek back to the bus. When we got back we put everything in the bus and headed off again.

We got through Perth quickly and arrived at Williams again. We had a thing that Mrs Hill called a “Speed Lunch!” We quickly ate and got back on the bus. We were all quiet on the way back to school and everyone was very happy. We got back to the classroom and talked about what we did.

I loved zoo camp and heaps of thanks to Mrs Hill and the other helpers. I really enjoyed my time at camp! Sarah Cussons
