    The Advanced Packaging Tool,

or APT, is a free user interface

that works with core libraries to

    handle the installation and

    removal of software on the

    Debian GNU/Linux distribution

    and its variants.[2]

    APT simplifies

    the process of managing

software on Unix-like computersystems by automating the

    retrieval, configuration and

    installation of software

    packages, either from binary files

    or bycompilingsource code.[2]

    Package manager

    A software package

    management system (PMS) is a

    collection of software tools to

    automate the process of

    installing, upgrading, configuring,

    and removingsoftware packages

    for a computer's operating

system in a consistent manner. It

    typically maintains a database of

    software dependencies and

    version information to prevent

    software mismatches and

    missing prerequisites.

    dpkg is thesoftwareat the base

    of the Debian package

    management system. dpkg is

    used to install, remove, and

    provide information about .deb

    packages.

    dpkg

    Kernel type

In computing, the kernel is the

    central component of most

    computer operating systems; it

    is a bridge between applications

    and the actual data processing

done at the hardware level. The

    kernel's responsibilities include

    managing the system's resources

    (the communication between

    hardware and software

    components).[1] Usually as a

    Monolithic Linux

    kernel

    basic component of an operating

system, a kernel can provide the

    lowest-levelabstraction layerfor

    the resources (especially

    processorsand I/O devices) that

    application software must

control to perform its function. It

    typically makes these facilities

    available to application

    processes through inter-process

    communicationmechanisms and

    system calls.

A shell is a piece of software that

    provides aninterfacefor users of

    an operating system which

provides access to the services of

a kernel. However, the term is

    also applied very loosely to

    applications and may include any

software that is "built around" a

particular component, such asweb browsers and email clients

    that are "shells" for HTML

    rendering engines. The name

    shelloriginates from shells being

    an outer layer of interface

    between the user and the

    internals of the operating system

    (the kernel).

A monolithic kernel is a kernel

    architecture where the entire

    operating system is working in

the kernel space and alone as

    supervisor mode. The monolithic

    differs from other operating

    system architectures[1][2] in that

    it defines alone a high-level

    virtual interface over computer

    hardware, with a set of

    primitives or system calls to

    implement all operating system

    services such as process

    management, concurrency, and

    memory management itself and

one or more device drivers as

    modules.

    Default user interface:

    The "Lightweight X11 Desktop

    Environment" is an extremely

    fast-performing and energy-

    saving desktop environment.

    Maintained by an international

    community of developers, it

comes with a beautiful interface,multi-language support,

    standard keyboard short cuts

    and additional features like

    tabbed file browsing.

    KDE (pronounced /kedii/) is

    an international free software

    community producing an

integrated set of cross-platformapplications designed to run on

    Linux,FreeBSD,Windows,Solaris

and Mac OS X systems.[1][2] It is

    best known for its Plasma

Klaus Knopper. When starting a program, it is loaded from the optical disc and decompressed

into a RAM drive. The decompression is transparent and on-the-fly.

//Debian (pronounced /dbin/) is a computer operating system composed of software packages

released asfree and open source softwareespecially under theGNU General Public Licenseand other

    free softwarelicenses.[3]

The primary form, Debian GNU/Linux, which uses theLinux kernelandGNUOStools,[4]is a popular and influentialGNU/Linux distribution.[5]It is distributed with access to repositories

containing thousands of software packages ready for installation and use. Debian is known for relatively

strict adherence to the Unix and free software philosophies[6] as well as using collaborative software

development and testing processes.[7] Debian can be used as a desktop as well as server operating

system. It focuses on stability and security and is used as a base for many other distributions.

A live USB is aUSB flash driveor a USBexternal hard disk drivecontaining a fulloperating systemwhich

can bebooted. Live USBs are closely related tolive CDs, but sometimes have the ability to save settings

and permanently install software packages back onto the USB device. Like live CDs, live USBs can be

used in embedded systems forsystem administration, data recovery, or the testing of operating system

distributions without committing to a permanent installation on the local hard disk drive. Manyoperating systems including Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows XP Embeddedand many of the

Linux distributionsandBSDscan also be used from a USB flash drive.

Any change in acomputingsystem, such as new feature or new component, is transparent if the system

after change adheres to previous external interface as much as possible while changing its internal

behaviour. The purpose is to shield from change all systems (or human users) on the other end of the

interface. Confusingly, the term refers to overall invisibility of the component, it does not refer to

visibility of component's internals (as inwhite boxoropen system). The term transparentis widely used

in computing marketing in substitution of the term invisible, since the term invisible has a bad

connotation(usually seen as something that the user can't see and has no control over) while the term

transparenthas a good connotation (usually associated with not hiding anything). The vast majority of

the times, the term transparent is used in a misleading way to refer to the actual invisibility of a

    computing process.

A computer can compute results on the fly, or retrieve a previously stored result.

It can mean to make a copy of a removable media (CD-ROM,DVD, etc) directly, without first

saving the source on an intermediate medium (aharddisk); for example, copying a CD-ROM

    from a CD-ROM drive to aCD-Writerdrive.[2]

When used for encrypted data storage, on the fly thedata streamis automatically encrypted as it

is written and decrypted when read back again, transparently to software. The acronymOTFEis

    typically used.

On-the-fly programming is the technique of modifying a program without stopping it.[3]

Although Knoppix is primarily designed to be used as a Live CD, it can also be installed on a

hard disklike a typical operating system. Computers that support booting from USB devices canload Knoppix from a live USB flash drive or memory card.

There are two main editions of Knoppix: the traditional Compact Disc (700 megabytes) edition

and the DVD (4.7 gigabytes) "Maxi" edition. Each of these main editions has two language-specific editions: English and German.

Knoppix mostly consists of free and open source software, but also includes proprietary

    software.

Proprietary software is computer software licensed under exclusive legal right of its owner. The

purchaser, or licensee, is given the right to use the software under certain conditions, but restricted

from other uses, such as modification, further distribution, or reverse engineering.

    Usage:

Knoppix can be used to copy files easily from hard drives with inaccessible operating systems.

To quickly and more safely use Linux software, the Live CD can be used instead of installing

    another OS.

    Contents

More than 1000 software packages are included on the CD edition and more than 2600 are

included on the DVD edition. Up to 9 gigabytes can be stored on the DVD in compressed form.

    These packages include:

LXDE (lightweight X11 desktop environment [default for 6.0.1]) or KDE 3, a morefeature-complete desktop (default for 5.3.1).

A Terminal Server (also referred to as Serial Server) enables companies to connect devices with

anRS232,RS422orRS485serial interface to alocal area network(LAN). Products marketed as

terminal servers can be very simple devices that do not offer any security functionality, such as

data encryption and user authentication. The primary application scenario is to enable serial

devices to access network server applications, or vice versa, where security of the data on the

LAN is not generally an issue. There are also many terminal servers on the market that have

highly advanced security functionality to ensure that only qualified personnel can access various

servers and that any data that is transmitted across the LAN, or over the Internet, is encrypted.

Usually companies who need a terminal server with these advanced functions want to remotely

control, monitor, diagnose and troubleshoot equipment over a telecommunications network.

The Personal System/2 or PS/2 was IBM's third generation of personal computers. The PS/2

line, released to the public in 1987, was created by IBM in an attempt to recapture control of

the PC market by introducing an advancedproprietaryarchitecture

the ImPS/2 or IMPS/2 protocol (the abbreviation combines the concepts of "IntelliMouse" and

    "PS/2").

    Saving changes in the environment

Prior to Knoppix 3.8.2, any documents or settings a user created would disappear upon reboot.

This lack of permanence made it necessary to save documents explicitly to a hard drive partition,

over the network, or to some removable medium, such as a USB flash drive.

It was also possible to set up a "persistent home directory", where any documents or settings

written to the user's home directory would automatically be redirected to a hard drive orremovable medium, which could be automatically mounted on bootup. What is stored there

physically is a file called knoppix.img. The file is used to simulate a file system into which files

are written for later use. This is transparent for the user. What the user perceives is that it is

possible to write files to the home directory.

Union mount support was added in version 3.8.1 through UnionFS. This was later replaced in

5.1.0 by Aufs to improve stability.[5]

. The union mount allows virtual updates to the data on theread-only CD/DVD medium by storing changes on a separate writable medium and then

representing the combination of the two as single storage device. The writable medium can be

memory (ramdisk), a hard disk, USB flash drive, etc. This means that the user can modify thesoftware installed on the Knoppix system, such as by using APT to install or update software.

The storage device containing the changes needs to be present whenever Knoppix is started else

only the original data from the disc will be used.

//A union mount is amountthat allows severalfilesystemsto be mounted at one time, appearing

    to be one filesystem.

Rather than mounting each filesystem at a different place in the directory hierarchy, a union

mount overlays the filesystems, creating a unified hierarchy. Thus, any given directory (or

"folder") in the resulting filesystem may contain files and subdirectories from any or all of theunderlying filesystems.

Generally one of the filesystems will be mounted read-write, while other filesystems are

    mounted read-only.

//The Advanced Packaging Tool, or APT, is afreeuser interfacethat works withcore libraries

to handle the installation and removal of software on theDebianGNU/Linux distributionand itsvariants.[2]APT simplifies the process of managing software onUnix-likecomputer systems by

automating the retrieval, configuration and installation ofsoftware packages, either from binary

    files or bycompilingsource code.//

By default Knoppix will scan available storage devices for a persistent home directory, but you

can override this scan and provide a specific location with a boot option (see below) such as:

    home=/dev/hda1/knoppix.img[6]

By carrying a Knoppix CD and a USB flash drive, a user can have the same environment,

programs, settings, and data available on any computer that is Knoppix-compatible.

    [edit] Boot options

When using Knoppix as a Live CD, one can use boot options, also known as 'cheatcodes', tooverride a default setting or automatic hardware detection when it fails. For example, the user

may wish to boot into a plain console, or proceed without SCSI support. For this, Knoppix

allows the user to enter one or more cheat codes at the prompt before booting. If the user doesn'tenter a cheat code, or doesn't press any key before the timeout, Knoppix will boot with its default

options. For example, to set the language to French rather than the default, one would type:

    knoppix lang=fr[6]

    Popularity

Knoppix was one of the first Live CD Linux distributions to gain popularity.[7]

There are severalfactors that contribute to the popularity of Knoppix:

Knoppix was one of the first Live CDs available, and is known as the "original" Debian-based Live CD

Its extensive hardware detection allows most systems to start Knoppix without anyconfiguration

Its ability to automatically connect to most kinds ofnetworks Its utilities for system repair and troubleshooting

Knoppix works on a fairly large number of PCs or laptops, but not all. The automatic hardwaredetection cannot cope with all hardware, and sometimes the drivers used will not be optimal.

Knoppix has difficulty recognizing some cards made before 1998, or motherboards with a BIOS

made before 2002. (In some cases, manual configuration with codes entered at boot time canovercome problems with automatic detection.)

If a PC does not have enough RAM to run KDE and other included programs, Knoppix boots up

a very limited twm session instead. The only window running in the twm session by default isxterm.

//Incomputing,twm (originally Tom's Window Manager, then Tab Window Manager and

    now Timeless Windows Manager

    [1]

) is the standardwindow managerfor theX WindowSystem, version X11R4 onwards. It is are-parenting window managerthat provides title bars,

shaped windows and icon management, and is extensively configurable.

twm was a breakthrough achievement in its time, but has been largely superseded by other

window managers. twm made a strong impact on the development of X window managers. Manyothers, such asvtwm, tvtwm,CTWM,FVWMand their derivatives, were built on itscode, while

many others used concepts pioneered by it.

A small but dedicated minority of users[who?] favor twm for its simplicity, customizability, and

light weightpartly due to being written inCdirectly againstXlibrather than based on awidget

toolkit. twm is still standard with theX.Orgreference implementationand is available as part ofmany X distributions. TheKnoppixlive CD will resort to twm if the computer it is running on

lacks theRAMfor a more sophisticated window manager.

twm was created by Tom LaStrange.

Incomputing, xterm is the standardterminal emulatorfor theX Window System. A user can have many

different invocations of xterm running at once on the samedisplay, each of which provides independent

input/outputfor theprocessrunning in it (normally the process is aUnix shell).//

    [edit] Versions

As of April 2008, from version 4 up until 5.1.1, Knoppix has been split into a DVD "maxi"edition (with over 9 GB of software), and a CD "light" edition, both developed in parallel.[8][9]

The following is the version history of major releases.

The KNOPPIX 6.0.1 / ADRIANE 1.1 is a CD-edition again, and a complete rebuild fromscratch. LXDE as default desktop and a very reduced software collection in order to easily fit on

CD.[10]No further development is being done of the traditional 5.x versions.

The current KNOPPIX 6.2.1 release, both CD and DVD, and the ADRIANE 1.2 has just CD-

    edition.[11]

Knopper, the developer of Knoppix. Adriane has a visual impairment, and has been assistingKlaus with the development of the software.[12] The name Adriane is also a backronym for

"Audio Desktop Reference Implementation And Networking Environment".

Adriane Knoppix is intended not only for the blind but also for beginners who dont know muchabout computers. It uses the SUSE Blinux screen reader with a phoneme generator and speech

    engine for normal output.
