Residents of Kniveton

Peak Waste wants to keep residents up to date with its plans for a biomassboiler and drying floor.

The cost of wood to be collected from Peak Waste has had a dramatic turnaround on the price we pay to have it collected and transported to Sheffield. This is because of the high demand for timber as a fuel in  power stationsacross the UK.

We always felt that it would be more beneficial to Peak Waste if we couldproduce electricity from the boiler as well as heat to dry waste, but the costoutweighed the pay back. As technology progresses the cost to add on a powergeneration unit is coming down and the scales will be tipped in our favour.

So we have decided to hold off on the purchase of the biomass boiler for nowand we are going to revisit it again in a years’ time.

We will however still construct the building for which we obtained planningpermission and use it to store cardboard and paper bales to keep them out ofthe elements.

Chapel NewsOur Harvest Festival and sale of goods were happy occasions, enjoyed by everyone whotook part. There is something special about a traditional harvest, thought by some to beold-fashioned, that brings back happy memories of times past. The smell of the flowersand the fruit displayed in the church is something which makes us feel glad of God’scontinuous bounty. On the evening following the service we continued the weekendwith our annual auction of goods, always an enjoyable evening, with David Bott in hisusual entertaining form. Well done, and thank you D 10ave. The proceeds of theweekend will be donated to a variety of charities, including local ones, e.g the school, the Kniveton News –and the maintenance of the church yard. Other charitiesbenefitting include Action for Children, MHA ( which ministers to elderly folk) andoverseas charities.

Thank you, if you took part in the service or the auction. You were, as always, verygenerous in the bids you made, enabling us to make a number of donations, which nodoubt will be gratefully received.

On the day following the harvest we were delighted to welcome children from theschool, who are learning about the history of the village and wanted to ask about howthe chapel came to be built. It is an interesting story, and may make a future KnivetonNews article. (Editor Yes please!)

Our Christmas celebrations, and no doubt yours, are moving ahead. We only have twoservices in December, the first is on 9th December, at 2.30 pm, led by Mrs Ruth Barratt. Our candlelight carol service is on 16th December at 6.30 pm. Everyone is welcome atthis service, led by Mr Peter Dawson. Come and celebrate with us. There is no servicein the chapel on Christmas Day, but you can, if you wish, attend the main church inAshbourne at 10 am.

You are as always, invited to take part in our annual Covenant Service, on 13th January

At our October meeting we welcomedtwonewmembers to the fold.

Our speaker for the evening was our ownmember, Denise, who gave us ademonstration of her floristry skills. Shemade three different arrangements; ahand tied bride's bouquet, an autumnalarrangement on a large candlestick and around low table arrangement. She gave uslots of little tips and wrinkles on the craftand showed us how to make our owncorsages using flowers and foliage she hadissued to each of us. We were all quitepleased with our achievements and the

three flower arrangements were raffled offat the end of the night.

On Wednesday three of our ladiesattended the Dovedale group meeting inAshbourne where the speaker was SophieDraper, who is a writer. It was aninteresting evening of stories and folksongs followed by a lovely buffet, asalways, made by the ladies of AshbourneWI.

Monday 12thNovember several of ourWIjoined the Ashbourne WI for a trip toArighi Bianchi in Macclesfield where wehad afternoon tea and a very interestingand entertaining talk byMr Paul Bianchiand his son Nick on the history behindthe business, which has been going forover 160 years and is now being run by thefourth generation of this Italian family. The family firm were very warm andwelcoming giving us a lovely afternoon.

If any ladies would like to join us pleasecome along to a meeting on the thirdWednesday of the month, starting at7.30pm, or if you prefer to speak tosomeone first, please ringAlison on 01335345908 or Susan on 01335 348442.
