I am so proud of our Dardenne Knights. I have seen and heard many reports of students working hard and putting forth their best  effort as we enter the last month of school.  We keep encouraging  our students to finish strong.  I truly believe in  our students and I am confident they are being taught by some of the best teachers in Fort Zumwalt.  Take time  to talk with your child about what they are most proud of.  Talk with them about their accomplishments and their future goals.  Take time to read this edition of the Knight News.  You will find a list of technology apps that you can use to engage your child with learning over the summer.  I know that you want to provide your child with the best educational opportunities possible and I hope we can assist you with that.  I would also like to encourage you to visit our local libraries.  They have some wonderful summer programs and each library is filled with so many wonderful books.  Thank you again for partnering with us to provide quality educational services for each Dardenne Knight.

ELA One popular trend in children?s literature is graphic novels. The illustrations and short bursts of text in rectangular panels resemble the structure of a comic book. Readers of all ages and abilities tend to enjoy graphic novels because of the visuals, humor, and small amount of text. When we think of children growing as readers, a book that offers limited text may not seem to be the best option. However, if a child is interested in this type of book, there are many opportunities for improving literacy skills. There are high quality graphic novels that have strong character development, good use of vocabulary, and a sequential story. The images provide clues about character and plot, which encourages the reader to make connections and inferences. If you have a str iving or unmotivated reader, see if he or she would be interested in a graphic novel. If your child insists on reading one type of book, you could encourage him or her to explore a different genre with a graphic novel. There are several types: historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, fairy tale, and informational. The Association for Library Service to Children provided a list of graphic novel titles that have been widely recommended. Happy reading!

Dardenne's ELA, Mat h and Technology Corner

Mat hMath anxiety can affect a student?s performance on tests. As we enter MAP testing, parent involvement can play a part in helping to reduce this anxiety.  Here are a few way to help your child:

- Make sure he/she is well-rested and eats a healthy breakfast.- Exhibit a positive attitude towards math.- Allow your child to practice math facts and play math games using technology.- Review basic facts.- Talk to your child and find out what he/she is most worried about. Just simply

sharing their worries out loud can be helpful.- Let your child know you are proud of him/her for trying his/her best each day and

that it is okay to not know all the answers.
