A History of the Knight Masons:ksot) of theUnitedStates

(Formerlyof Ireland)At the onsetof this history, I would like to thankthosewho

have contributedtime, memory, letters, articles of writing, proceedingsandopinionson thesubject.Without them it could nothavebeendone.

First, I would like to thankSir Knight JamesMcC. Allen. formany yearsthe GrandScribe for The Irish Councils andnow theDeputyGreatChiefof Knight Masonsin Irelandand,in this yearof1976, the Masterof the ResearchLodge of Ireland, the CC” ofDublin. Next, my friend, cousinand Sir Knight J. Sir Knight andCousin Ray Shute, alsooneof the founders, who advisedme thatmostof his letters, etc., wereatthe Universilyof North Carolinanow and that his memoryhad faded on manythings, but still appreciatedmy effort tq getall of thisdownon paper.

I am especiallygrateful for the helpgiven so freely by ournew GrandScribe,Sir Knight Ray Scarboroughof Delawarewhosogladlyhelpedby sendingmecopiesof lettersandrecordshe hadfoundandreadin thematerial turnedoverto him lastyear.Sir KnightLandisRandallsentapamphletandHarold Voorhis sentabit fromGould’sEncyclopedia. Also to Chief, Sir Knight EddieP. exact, for by everystandardBro. Hamill wasagreatandsuccessfulman and Masonof Dublin, Ireland. I alsohad copiesof originalRolls of the first three lodges and a reportof the craft from usinceptionasan independentorderin 1923to 1948 from Ireland.

Theresult is apaperthat is asnearlycorrect as apersoncanget atthis time. It will be improvedas more informationflows in,as ii continuesto do. All materialhasbeensubstantiated, doublecheckedand usedwith no guesswork. Nevertheless,as CousinJamesMcC. Allen remarked:

The early Irish did not write much and this is ancientMasonryfrom the beginning and it cannotbe provedbyrecordsfound to date. Thesedegreesare older than thethreedegreesof the Blue Lodge and older thanthe HolyRoyalArch itself.Thereweretwomajorproblemsthat kepttheearlyrecordsunwritten, short, andsometimesdestroyedin Ireland. The Crown andthe Church from time to timetook adim view of any formsof Masonryandno scribeswantedtoo manynamesandotherinformationaroundtobe found. Also therewere few menother thanthe Clergythatcould write.

It is interestingto note that in “The GenuineSecretsinFreemasonry”datingfrom beforeAD 1717,F. de P. Castellsputsup a good argumentthat the Royal Arch indeed is older thanthefirst two degreesof Masonry, certainlyolder thanthe third degree.

I will insertherea fact. The little piecesof the older worksdid not startfalling into place until about 1975 on my 5’s’ and6~visit toThe Irish GrandLodge, 17 MolesworthSt.,Dublin, Ireland. At thattime,CousinAllen tookmeinto hisconfidenceandacceptedmy seriousness, saying,“You are the only bloke who hascometosee us from the States,in forty years and I think some of thisinformationshouldbe handedover to you.

He thentook me to the actualLodgeof Knight Masons, andtheir small office. Even thoughI thought I hadbeenall over theLodgeBuilding I hadneverseenthis part. We spenttheentire daygoingoverrecordsandproceedings. At 80plus yearshe is a reallygreatperson.

To startour History of Knight Masons,we mustgo backtotheformationof theRoyalArch in Ireland forwritten history. (BroAllen was firmly of the opinionthat Knight Masonrywasas old orolder than the Royal Arch and perhapsthe first of all lodges inIreland). History saysthesedegrees,“so calledhigher degrees,”belongedto the Masters.

Thefirst mentionof theRoyalArch in Irelandwas in a reportin an old minutebook: “Two Masonscarriedthe Royal Arch in aparadein Yougal, Irelandon St. John’sDay in 1743.”

The lodgesat this time werevery small and very poor—butdeeplyrootedin tradition. It is felt by manystudentsof the Craftthat the Masonicdegrees, especiallythe speculativeor so-calledhigher degrees, could havespreadbackinto Europeas the “DarkAges” wereendinglike most learningdid.

At that time, Knight Masonry requiredtwo setsof Officersbasedon the Bible storiesof JoshuaandZerubbabel, the Red andGreendegrees. We know this from old records, andthereexistsanold apron of the degreeswith green on one side and red on theother. Recordsgo backbefore1750on this. Otherdocumentsshedmorelight on thisperiod.A certificate,in French,(butgoodevidenceprovesit wastranslatedfrom English),testifiesthatdeCluzeauwasa MasterMasonfrom “Loge Bleuc de Dublin #26.” Tweniy yearslaterproceedingsof Irish Lodge#535 grantedademit to amemberMason, IsaacReed, residingin New York. This manwas madeaSuperExcellentMasteron August20,1773andon August23~wasdubbeda Knight of the Red Cross. In 1784, Archibald Wildinreceiveda“GREEN” certificateand by the endof theceniuiy theGreenDegreeswereall over Ireland.

In 1836,TheGrandCouncilof Ritesin Ireland(comprisedofduly qualified and electedrepresentatives)si~ggesteda GrandCouncil of Knights of the Sword, but the motion failed. Theconstitutionof thatbodyprintedin theAhimenRezonof 1839reads,“The SupremeEncampmentof KnightsTemplarandtheKnightsofMaltaandtothecouncilsof the precedingdegreesof theKnightsoftheSwordor’RedCross’Masons....”Between1790and1836,(orperhapsevenearlier, for no actual recordshavebeenfound), the“Green”degreesbecameseparatedfrom theRoyalArch. generallythe onesshown later on the original Irish Rolls of theCouncilsasbeingthe foundingmembersof the Knight Masonsin1937. TheyformedtheLodge#666thatbecametheResearchLodgeof North Carolina- the first researchlodge in the United States.(This is a story all its own and althoughmuch of it is in the“Innovators”much is left to tell. With only threemembersof thefirst rolls of Knight Masonsandonly afew of themembersof #666still living, thisshouldbeundertakenatonce.)

We knowfrom the informationfound on the organizationofthe Knight Masonsthat at first the men in North Carolinawereprimarily interestedin the Degreeof RoyalArk Mariner. We knowthey receivedthe work of AMD from ScotlandandLord Cassiliswho visitedherein 1931.1 understand, but cannotproveasyet, thatheconveyedthesedegreesofAMD on about20Masonsin Ashevillethatsummerof 1931,but moreresearchon thatisneededandcannotbe used in this paper. At any ratein the hurry to incorporatetheAMD degreesin North Carolina, in somemannerthe ScottishCouncil of Knight Masons of Irelandwas left out.

This mistakebecameknown almost at onceand work wasbegunto securethedegreesfrom their properhomein Ireland, theMotherCouncil. This took time, money, andpatience, for the Irishwerenot aboutto let their sovereigntybe abridgedor go floatingaroundwithout properwarrantsandseriousness. They desiredtohaveno problemswith the AMD, Ancient andAcceptedRitesinthe British Isles andwith theScottishandYork Rite (Templars)intheUnitedStates. So at this time BrothersEd Allen, RayShuteandFred Bahnsonreally beganto work. Many letters, someof whichare includedin thispaper, wentbackandforth, manyuncertaintieshad to be workedout. It was decidedthat the bestmanto go toIrelandwas I. EdwardAllen of Warrenton.ThestoryGf histrip waswritten by him for the Orphan’sFriend, theofficial publicationofNorthCarolinaGrandLodge in the issueof September16, 1935.While in Dublin, Ireland, BrotherAllen wasthe guestof two greatKnightMasons, theHamellbrothers, bankers. While there, theGreendegreeswereconferredon BrotherAllen, making him the first (ifyou overlooktheAMD receiversatAsheville)in theUnitedStates.BrotherAllen suggestedthatthey return his trip andbe theguests

Duringthisperiod, many lettersweresentbackandforth, evenaskingif thetwentyonemenapplyingfor theKnight Masonsdegreesin threecouncilswould beexcusedfrom dues, etc. havingtakenthedegreesunderthe ScottishAMD umbrellabefore.

It appearsto me from conversationwith JamesMcC. Allen,of Dublin, thatthe early Shutelettersdisplayeda greatdeal moreinterestin theArk MarinersDegreethanthe Knight Masons. Oneletter atthistimeadvisesShuteto havetwentyof thementhat tookthe AMD apply for Councilsin North Carolinaandto certify thatthese“Green”degreeswere in no way aduplicationof anydegreesin theYork or ScottishRitebut weredifferentanddistinct, sendingproperformsto befilled out andreturned.

On October30, 1934,BrotherShute’scoverlettershowsthathe had heededall requestsand was submitting namesfor threecouncils, still keepingtheirScottishnames:SaintPatrick in America#26 on the Irish rolls, ShamrockThistle and Rose #27 to be inRaleigh, andHarp.CrossandEagle #28 to bein Warrenton,NorthCarolina. It hadbeendecidedfor anumberof reasonsthat all threecouncils were to be in North Carolinainsteadof one beinginVirginia. At the sametime an applicationof a Provincial GrandCouncil wasmadeandthe officers weresuggested.

In February1935 theGrandScribeofIrelandwroteto EnglandAMD and A & C Rites and the Grand Encampmentof KnightsTemplarherein the United States. This haspartly beenexplainedearlier, but nowthe Irish were really seriousandwantedanswers. It was herethatI. EdwardAllen steppedin andwrote the letterswehavementionedbeforeand got the problemssolved so the trackcould beopenedagain. But lettersstill went backand forth, evenritualswereexchanged, andfinally on May 25, 1936,1. H.
