Deputy Grand Knight’s Report

Brother Knights,

It has been quite a tumultuous couple of weeks for our Council. Beginning with GK John Schmidt’s initial hospitalization, his temporary recovery, final hospitalization and death, the Council has been shaken to very bone.

Deputy Grand Knight’s Report (Continued from page 1.)

It has been quite a tumultuous couple of weeks for our council.

As I have mentioned in the two meetings I have chaired in John’s absence, I am struck and disheartened by the lack of participation at meetings and functions by the members of the Council. We have 249 dues paying members in the Council and only about 40 attend meetings. At the UNCW vs NC State baseball game Charlie Backes and I were the only knights present. To me that is unacceptable! I am going to make it my mission to try to increase participation in all our events by more brothers. I would appreciate your comments and ideas as to how to improve our meeting agenda to foster greater attendance. Also, ideas on event participation both old and new would be appreciated. For our next meeting, I would like to suggest that we make the meeting “bring your brother” night. That is, pick one of your fellow knights who has not attended a regular meeting and invite him to accompany you to the meeting. After the business meeting, let’s share a beer or cold drink and see if we can’t renew old acquaintances of make new acquaintances. Introduce yourself to some of our newer members and find out their interests and encourage their participation.

Along these lines, I am hopeful that we will have a great turnout for the family rosary, communion, and breakfast on April 29

th at the 8:30 AM Mass at ICC. What better way to

show the meaning of Catholic Knighthood than to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion as a council and demonstrate fraternity by sharing a meal with your fellow knights. Let’s show the parishioners of ICC the power of “yellow” – wear your yellow shirts!

The beginning of May will be very busy. The first weekend in May is the State Convention. SK Bob Macaluso and I will act as your delegates and SK Frank Reck and SK Steve Hargett are the alternates. The convention site will be in Hickory, NC. Hopefully, we will bring back some awards and share with you any pertinent news happenings. The business meeting on May 8

th will include the voting of

officers. The prospective slate of officers was presented at the April meeting but as in years past, nominations can be made for any office from the floor. I ask that anyone who feels the calling volunteer to run for office. If not for office please consider becoming a committee chairman and if not that please consider volunteering for a committee. The Council can only be as great as YOU make it!

Also in May, let’s not forget that May 13th is Mother’s Day.

Dave King and his volunteers will be passing out baby bottles at the Basilica in support of Lifeline Pregnancy Center. The bottles are to be filled and collected on Father’s Day weekend. This is a great cause and Dave has done a great job throughout the years. Dave does need some extra help at the 9:30 AM Mass. Please contact Dave directly if you can help him. Also on Mother’s Day, we will be giving bookmarks as Mother’s Day presents to all the moms. We will ask for another set of volunteers at

all masses both at the Basilica as well as at ICC at our May meeting. Please consider helping out – it only takes about 15 minutes after Mass.

Thank you Bob Benazzi, DGK

April Meeting

Details of GK John Schmidt’s death, wake and funeral were the major topic of the April business meeting. Other topics included the nomination of officers for the upcoming Fraternal Year. We need to vote again in May on the cost of the food for the reception. Agent Chris Mahoney from the KofC Insurance was also present and spoke to the members about the need for insurance and planning.

Please use the Monthly Award Nomination Form to nominate a deserving brother or family for these awards.

Full details of the meeting are in the April meeting minutes, posted here in the “Members Only” section of the council website. Please submit any comments, corrections or additions to Recorder, John Gasson.

Our May Business Meeting will be held in the Saint Mary School Cafeteria at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 8

th.

William Colaner would have won $200 at the July meeting. All he had to do to win was be there. May’s prize will be $225. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN!!!

Chancellor’s Report

John Anthony Schmidt

Ubi Caritas est vera; Deus ibi est. Where your heart is – God is there.

John Schmidt was a great man because he lived a life of Faith in the Triple Love Command. John loved God; John loved his

family, Marian and his four beautiful children. He loved his brothers – his brothers at VMI and then, by following his Father’s example, his brother knights in the Knights of Columbus.

John invested his whole life – his heart and his soul into the triple love command. John was a beautiful example of Christian Stewardship – using his God-given talents to make something better – to grow in faith, hope and love by investing your talents, your time and your treasure to improve the quality of life for those you love. John demonstrated his Faith in God by loving and serving others. He was humble and caring in his words and his actions – more interested in your views and ideas than in pushing his own agenda.

John was an exemplary leader because he lived by a vision – a dream, if you will – and he knew how to encourage, motivate and inspire others to join him in his labors for love. John was successful in business because he knew how to plan, organize and motivate his employees and colleagues to get the work done. In military parlance, John led from the front – he was always there; he was always involved and he was always enthusiastic. It was always a pleasure to be with him. However, John saw business in a practical, realistic sense – as the means to an end. John was not greedy or self-centered. His goal in business was to be successful in order to provide a reliable income for his family. His motivation for his business career was love of his family.

As our Grand Knight, John exemplified the virtues and values that the Knights of Columbus stand for: Charity, Unity, Brotherhood and Patriotism. He was a Catholic Gentleman in the very best sense of the term. He exemplified Christian love and leadership throughout his whole life. John knew how to listen, to encourage and to offer caring advice and wise counsel. He trusted in the Holy Spirit and he knew how and when to step aside to allow the Holy Spirit to step in. I am in a position of leadership in this council because of John’s quiet and skillful caring love. Most importantly, John lived in accord with Jesus’ command at the Last Supper – “Love one another as I have loved you.”

All of us will miss John greatly and we will remember him in our prayers. As we make our own way through this Valley of Tears may we be uplifted by the thought that we will all be together again with John in the Heavenly Kingdom for all eternity. Eternal Rest grant to him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. May his soul and all the souls of our Faithful Departed rest in peace.

Brothers,

Habitat for Humanity

Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity continues to make progress on a number of houses:

The Chadwick Road House in the Wrightsboro area will be wrapping up and will be ready for its new owner in May if all goes well with the final details and closing.

The 11th Street house is getting ready for paint which will

be a big step then the interior can be finished and the final details can be completed for Cleveland and Jennifer to move into their dream home.

The Lingo Street house is finishing up with the vinyl siding, porches, handrail roofing and trim and then the subs will finish up the interior so that the sheetrock can be installed.

The house in Burgaw in nearing completion as well and that house will hopefully be ready to occupy in May or June.

A groundbreaking was held at Big Gum Road in the Murrayville area of Wilmington. That will allow for the concrete footing to be poured and the block foundation to be completed.

They have also taken back a house that will have to undergo some renovation before it can be resold. This house is on King Street and that work will begin in the next week or so.

They also have a house that will be a “Women’s Build”. If you know a women who may be interested in helping out with that house contact habitat for more details.

As you can see they are very busy. So if you may be interested in helping our contact: www.capefearhabitat.org/ for details and information.

VAVS:

Please continue to support our veterans with your gifts and prayers. They still need help and we owe them all the Thanks we can give them either with gifts and support but also your prayers to aid their comfort.

The Admission Degree Team, known previously as the 1st

Degree Team, is in need of backups for two important parts: The Deputy Grand Knight and the Financial Secretary. If you have an interest in doing some council work and like the stage please contact the team captain, Charlie Backes.

After the degree, SK Ray Wycoff, Past State Deputy of Virginia read the following explanation of our emblem.

Explanation of the Emblem of the Order

The Emblem of the Order dates from the Second Supreme Council meeting, May 12, 1883, when it was designed by James T. Mullen, who was the first Supreme Knight. A quick glance at the Emblem indicates a shield mounted upon a cross similar to a Maltese cross, turned sideways. The shield is that associated with a medieval Knight. The cross of Malta is the representation, in a traditionally artistic design, of the Cross of Christ through which all graces of redemption were procured for mankind. This, then, represents the Catholic spirit of the Order.

Mounted on the shield are three objects: a faces standing vertically, and crossed behind it, an anchor and a dagger or short sword. The faces from Roman days of authority, which must exist in any tightly bonded and efficiently operating organization. The anchor is the mariner’s symbol for Columbus, the patron of the Order. The short sword or dagger was the weapon of the knight when engaged upon an errand of mercy. The shield expresses Catholic Knighthood in an organized merciful action, and with the letters KofC, it proclaims this specific form of authority. Thus, the red, white and blue in the background of the shield and the foreground of the Cross of Malta are the colors of our beloved country. Red is the color of stout-hearted courage, of pulsing activity and a full measure of devotion. Blue is the symbol of hope, of calm tranquility under God, and of confidence in the protection of our country, established under God. White is the symbol of nobility of purpose, of purity of aim, and of crucible ideals to be carried out.

But there is another symbolism of color in red, white and blue. This is the ecclesiastical symbolism in which Red becomes the reflection of the drops of blood, shed upon Calvary, and of the Martyr’s blood, shed in defense of the faith, Red, then, is the symbol of Faith, of belief in Christ, in the Redemption, and in the mission of every man to spread the knowledge and love to mankind, and of the overwhelming affection which the God man has for each individual. White then is the symbol of Christ like Charity. Blue is the color of Our Lady’s mantle, in which she draped her beloved Son, through whom salvation came to a sinful world. Blue is then the symbol of Hope.

Brothers, this then is the meaning of our Emblem of the Order. Always wear it with Pride, Dignity and Honor.

Vitamin C

By Charlie Backes

Some research has found the Vitamin C is even more important in the daily diet than previously thought. This is the vitamin that was lacking in the diet of British sailors and caused many of them to die of scurvy. Today’s diet, in many cases, relies on processed foods that do not have this vital ingredient in it. To ensure a good daily supply of Vitamin C one should take a good daily multivitamin or vitamin C supplement or even better eat a good healthy diet with fresh veggies and fruits.

LAMB Director’s Report

It Will Never Happen To Us

Brothers have you, a family member or a friend ever heard, “It will never happen to us,” or something to this effect? Unfortunately, many of us have heard this comment and then experienced or witnessed

a disaster.

We cannot stop Mother Nature or reduce our risk 100%. However, we can become aware of our surroundings and educate ourselves & loved ones concerning disasters.

During disasters and tragedies, we turn to family for help. As a Knight of Columbus our family is extended to include all brother knights. We sometimes forget how big, skilled, knowledgeable, diverse, and far reaching our Order is in North Carolina. We see our extended family members weekly at church, monthly at council & assembly meetings, regularly at KofC events, every six months at State KofC meetings.

Our family of Brother Knights when called for help always respond. We have an internal desire to help our fellow brothers & sisters in Christ. The challenge we experience after a disaster is how to properly coordinate all our resources to effectively & appropriately respond to a community’s needs. The NC State Council has decided to take a proactive approach to this challenge through the creation of a networked KofC Disaster Relief Program (DRP).

A Council’s Disaster Relief Program along with the NC State Council will help facilitate the education of your members, identify the best use of man-power based upon your council’s skills & demographics and become part of a wider network to help our brothers, their families, your local community, surrounding communities or any community in the state when a disaster occurs.

In the next several weeks, you will receive further information on the following:

What the NC State Council has established concerning Disaster Relief.

A request for help from the Bishop of the Raleigh Diocese.

Information on how to expand or start the process to set-up a Council Disaster Relief Program.

Have a Blessed Day

Council Director’s Report

Brothers,

I’m still impressed by the manner in which the council came together after John Schmidt’s passing. We had a great turnout for both the wake and funeral. Given that the Azalea Festival was the morning of the funeral there

were several logistical issue. However, we had help from all sides and things went about as smoothly as we could have imagined. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

The deadline for the newsletter is the 20th of the month for

the next month’s issue.

Vivat Jesus! SK Frank Reck, Council Director
