Dear Employees and Readers!

K lippon Connect – these two words were on everyone’s lips at the Hannover Messe. Not only among us on the stand were our latest connectivity developments a hot topic. News of our innovation

spread to representatives of other companies, customers and journalists immediately after the opening. Because, following extensive work, we presented our new generation of terminal blocks in Hannover. An innovation that delighted customers and visitors to our exhibition stand alike. An in-novation that will raise the productivity in panel building. An innovation from Weidmüller that shows that we understand our customers’ requirements and challenges and one with which we all of our esteemed employees can look into the future with pride and confidence.

What many of you often heard about in the past under the project name ‘ARC’, is a new terminal block product family consisting of universal and application products with an advancement of the PUSH IN connection system. Under the name ‘A series’, it complements our existing terminal block portfolio and will be marketed in the future together with our other terminal blocks under the name Klippon Connect. Com-plemented by our electronics products and comprehensive software solutions, such as the Weidmüller Configurator, we offer mature and holistic solutions with this innovation – another important step towards us becoming a solution provider. Through the solid understanding of our customers’

applications, we have succeeded in developing custom-fit connectivity that delivers measurable advantages in all phases of panel building: from planning through installation to trouble-free operation.

With this new innovation and restructuring of our terminal block range, we are building upon our strengths and our pedigree, since Weidmüller began production and sale of the first plastic-insulated terminal blocks in Detmold in 1948 and set new standards. With Klippon Connect we are giving this pioneering solution a name which in the future will offer our customers far more than just a new product: with the A series and our new application products, we will make a major contribution to increasing our customers’ productivi-ty – as we have done since the 1940s.

At the same time, this advancement will also secure our profitability and competitiveness as a result of the high stan-dardisation degree of the elements used, together with the optimised and flexible production and installation processes. We are strengthening our core business with the universal and application products of the new A series by enhancing it with new attributes like innovative drive, technological exper-tise as well as solution provider competence, hence positio-ning us as a leading connectivity provider. At the same time, we demonstrate that we know our customers’ requirements very well, thus awakening interest via customised solutions, hence spending more time in dialogue with them with a view to leveraging the sale of further solutions.

The hard work and diligence of many employees is reflected in the development of our new terminal blocks, new applica-tion products and the merging of our entire terminal block range under the name Klippon Connect. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work and dedication. I hope you enjoy reading this special supplement, so you too are well informed about our latest innovations.

Let’s connect.

Your

W e have set milestones in connectivity with developments, such as the first plastic-insula-

ted terminal block or the time-sa-ving PUSH IN direct plug connec-tion. Where are we currently? Berger: Both now and in the future, we continue to see ourselves as a defi-nitive pioneer, making groundbreaking advances in all areas of panel wiring. We start from an electromechanical perspective, with our modular terminal block being today's most frequent-

ly used connection solution. We’re expanding the necessary ingredients on this basis for useful solution ap-proaches – for example we’re driving more integration of passive and active functions by consolidating electronic components, providing added value for our customers.

Where does our contribution in the field of panel building begin and end?

Schepmann: We accompany the entire value creation chain in panel buil-

ding. Our aim is to increase productivity at every stage, something we’re able to achieve thanks to our detailed process knowledge. Our knowledge of what we can do to help our customers in their planning, installation and operating stages is directly incorporated into our product and technology developments and we will continue this approach in the future development of other fields.

Berger: It is important for us to under-stand the entire engineering process and to support it as efficiently as possi-ble. Throughout the entire engineering

Arnd Schepmann (l.) and Dr. Timo Berger (r.) illustrating the advantages of the panel to our customers.

With the new development of the A series and by merging our terminal block portfolio under the generic term Klippon Connect, we have restructured our product range for panel wiring and offer customised application products and process-supported services. In an interview, Dr Timo Berger, Head of the Factory Automation division and Arnd Schepmann, Head of the Terminal Block business unit, explain what the new innovation means for panel building.

process chain, we promote the end-to-end connection of two important engineering disciplines: mechanics and electrical design. Panel implementation efficiency from planning through to production is only possible if these are coordinated. Particularly in the case of terminal blocks, panel structures often have to be configured individually and redesigned several times over as part of a time-consuming process, due to the absence of simple, pre-configured solutions. Duplicated work stages like this can be avoided with our tailored application products.

How exactly is this differentiation to be understood? What criteria do our customers use to decide between universal and application products?

Berger: Our universal products are consistently designed for functionality and user-friendliness. In this respect, selecting the right component is gea-red to the connection technology and the function required in each case. Our application range is based on a strong understanding of our customers’ indus-tries and segments, as well as in-depth analysis of recurrent application fields in the panel, such as control wiring or signal wiring. By focusing consistently on defined applications, we can opti-mise our product functions and design for specific customer requirements. For instance, colour-coding of plus and mi-nus potentials contributes significantly to efficiency and safety. Our customers

can be sure that the product and ap-plication are perfectly compatible. An illustrative example is our new max-GUARD system which combines load monitoring and potential distribution in an overall solution. Hitherto separately installed terminal blocks become inte-gral components of 24 V DC control voltage distribution.

Panel planning and design is the basis of all the other steps in the process chain. What prospects do you see in this field?

Schepmann: We’re already setting the course for tomorrow’s planning pro-cess today by not limiting our product data to technical performance charac-teristics. With the Weidmüller Confi-gurator software tool, terminal blocks and other Weidmüller terminal rail components can be selected and confi-gured simply and intuitively. End-to-end product data enable our customers to access complete solution structures in just a few steps. This also includes the accessories assigned to products by way of object dependencies. Likewise, we’re integrating product-specific data that supports the production automa-

tion, ordering, logistics and documen-tation processes. Our system-oriented marking software equipped with an eCAD interface can also lighten our customers’ load in terms of enginee-ring.

What trends do you see in the future and what is the focus of our new innovations in this respect?

Berger: We see an important trend in the progressive automation of assem-bly, installation and wiring processes in our customers’ panel building. Faster marking options, such as the new Multimark marker strip, play as im-portant a role here as terminal blocks assembled by robots. We took these issues into consideration in the new industrial design, for example by making the outer contour easy to grip. We also intend to expand the data availability step-by-step for our entire product range. The data transparency and availability this enables throughout the engineering process paves the way for future panel building along the lines of Industry 4.0.

The application product for signal wiring and control voltage distribution was at the focus of our customers’ attention ...

… and offers our customers considerable advantages

in panel building.

Added efficiency in panel planning, installation and operationEfficiency enhancement and cost optimisation in all phases of panel building: With our Klippon Connect innovations for terminal blocks, we deliver innovative ideas for the challenges of panel wiring. But what exactly are the highlights of the new A series and how does the universal range differ from the application range? For the answers to these questions we need to take a closer look and shed more focused light on our innovation.

T he increasingly complex pro-cesses in panel manufacture call for innovative connectivity. Under the name Klippon

Connect we now have a ma-ture terminal block range with which we can offer our customers the right solution for every appli-cation. “With our new A series, we’ve created a generation of terminal blocks that fulfils all the requirements customers place on modern technology,” explains Wolfgang Weltermann, Stra-tegic Product Manager responsible for the new terminal blocks. “Limited panel space calls for increasingly compact terminal block design in order to gua-

rantee the requisite wiring density. So that the system remains transparent, our new terminal blocks have colou-

red operating elements, known as ’pushers’, which make it

easy to identify the contact points for the openings to release the conductor.”

This innovative pusher is just one of the many

highlights of our new products which feature

an all-new industrial design. Thus, for example, a standard

test point can noticeably simplify later maintenance work with a test adapter. The spring-loaded assembly feet on both sides guarantee simple, comfor-table use even with limited space when

mounting or removing the terminal blocks from the rail and the practical design means that all terminal block functions can be easily distinguished. “This makes panel installations signifi-cantly more transparent and faults can be resolved in the shortest possible time,” clarifies Weltermann about the advantages. “These properties gua-rantee easy panel modification and extension, rapid maintenance and up to 50 per cent less installation time.” At the same time, large marker areas and the addition of optimised strip markers on the products ensure even more effective labelling. Continuous cross-connector channels improve flexibility and save time during installation – all cross-connectors can be easily adapted and marked.

“With our new A series, we’ve created a generation of terminal blocks that fulfils all the requirements customers place on modern technology.”Wolfgang Weltermann, Strategic Product Manager

Efficient planning is of key importance and is given optimum support through our services.

in industrial processes or energy, for example. For each of these areas there are typical panel configurations for perfect and space-saving panel design. Users can be sure that the product and application fit together one-to-one from the outset.

Furthermore, we offer further advantages for our customers, such as control voltage distribution with the AAP potential distributor termi-nal blocks or the maxGU-ARD modular concept with integrated electronic load monitoring. Electrical energy from the power supply is distributed to downstream con-sumers in control circuits. Often in the past this required a large number of conductors being wired in a tight space which can quickly lead to faulty wiring and thus to significantly more work.

“We’re offering the ideal surge current protection solution here as well as structured control voltage distribution,” explains Weltermann. This innovative combination of load monitoring and electrical distribution saves time during installation, reduces space require-ments in the panel by up to 50 per cent and improves reliability.

“Our A series of universal and appli-cation products offer a terminal block with the latest technology for the standard applications of our customers on the one hand, and on the other, individually tailored products for the ap-plication that will enable us to improve productivity across the entire produc-tion process going forward.”

“The universal products from the new A series allow us to cover a wide range of functions”, Weltermann continues. In addition, we offer our customers inno-vative, tailored products and solutions for their panels which make a major contribution to improving productivity, efficiency and safety. “The panels are individually configured, but a variety of recurrent application fields within the panel are a fixed component in almost all industries,” Weltermann explains. “Our customised application range ensures a clear efficiency advantage in each individual process step and leads to an unbeatable gain in panel building productivity.” If a customer is in the machine construction sector, for example, there are several applications that make a regular appea-rance. We have focused on these and can now offer our customers specific space-saving solutions tailored to their needs. The same applies to applications

The new application range provides our customers individual solutions focused on the exact needs of their industry applications. Space savings, fewer components and faster handling are just some of the customer advantages of the design-in process when using the new application products. Together with our process-supporting services, we offer a complete package that will allow Sales to score top marks – thus changing the way we respond to our customers.

K laus Michels, Head of Sales for Northern Germany looks back at the first day of Han-nover Messe with satisfac-

tion. Visitors to our booth lingered in the Klippon Connect area longer than in any other. Customers from all over the world took a great deal of interest in our new terminal block innovations whilst interacting with sales staff and product managers. “The interest was overwhelming,” says Michels. “We received very

positive feedback on our new port-folio in direct discussions and were convincing across the range.”

Michels has been in the project’s marketing team from the very outset and represents the views and requi-rements of Sales and in turn those of our customers, in close coordination with other colleagues. “The A-Series and our new application products are crucially important to our com-pany and will change the way we respond to our customers in Sales,” affirms Michels. “Our terminal blocks are still the products that generate a significant proportion of sales, both now and into the future. Our latest innovations mean that we are now capable of offering customers tailored solutions for application fields, thereby representing more than just a combination of different products in this area too.”

The various stages of the panel building process form the starting point when it comes to responding to customers. The panel building process of tomorrow should be cost-effective, flexible and adaptable. This includes everything from the

project planning stage, engineering, calculation, production and installa-tion, to wiring and testing all of the processes. “In the future, we’ll be purposefully focusing on customer requirements in the respective panel building application areas,” explains Michels. “With our expertise and application products, we can home in on every point in the process chain and by providing measurable customer advantage.”

This also has an impact on the sales of our other components. “Up until now, we could win over customers with our products and solutions such as u-remote, FreeCon Contact-less or our lighting system for wind turbines in particular,” explains José Carlos Álvarez Tobar, our Chief Mar-keting and Sales Officer. We have made substantial investments in this regard over the last few years and created new solutions and services for our customers. With the Klip-pon Connect A-Series and our new range, we have created an additional connectivity innovation that we can use to score top marks with our customers.

“ The new applica-tion products will change the way we respond to our customers”

Klaus Michels is convinced of the benefits.

As soon as a customer opted for one of the described solutions, in most cases they also bought our other products such as terminal blocks, power supplies and markers. “The new Klippon Con-nect application products mean that we can now offer customised solutions to suit selected customer applica-tions and thereby generate real ad-ded value,” clarifies Álvarez Tobar. “As a result, we no longer have to be constrained by a ‘top-down’ approach and offer our terminal blocks as add-on solutions when we respond to our customers in future. Instead, we can generate interest ‘from the bottom up’ and demonstrate the potential in panel building.”

In addition, we can offer custo-mers better design-in support with our complementary services. “Di-gital data is becoming increasingly im-portant during product development,” explains Michels. Consistently available data is a keystone of digital produc-tion from product selection, over the configuration and creation of a virtual prototype, right through to automated production and installation. However, this requires standardised interfaces

between product data, networked engineering tools and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. “With the new Weidmüller Configurator, we can provide all the relevant item data for panel project planning in the common engineering tools, thereby integrating

ourselves into our customers’ product development process, right down to product labelling and marking,” adds Michels.

To ensure that they were well-prepared for this altered approach and our custo-mers’ requirements, our Local Industry Managers (LIMs), customer advisors

and sales engineers attended Klippon Connect training sessions ahead of Hannover Messe. Over seven sessions in total, the International Training Cen-tre (ITC) trained colleagues from both Germany and Switzerland in Detmold and southern Germany respectively in

April, so that they were thorough-ly prepared for the trade fair. “More training schedules which also include sessions in English within the global Group com-panies, have been drawn up for May onwards”, explains Kerstin Stohlmeyer, a consultant at the International Training Centre.

Based on Hannover Messe itself, all the preparatory work was clearly worthwhile. “The positive feedback, the impressions and the inspiration all demonstrate the fact that, with

the Klippon Connect A-Series and our application range, we have developed innovations that will both be well-received by our customers and give us a significant boost,” Álvarez Tobar says confidently.

“The A series and our new application products are of essential importance for our company and are set to change the way we res-pond to our customers in Sales.”Klaus Michels, Sales Manager North Region

W ith the market launch of the newly developed A-series PUSH IN termi-nal block family, we are

adapting the structure of our entire terminal block range and bringing it together under the ‘Klippon Connect’ brand name. Our ultimate benchmark in so doing is how well we focus on our customers’ needs. What may appear complicated at first is underpinned by a clear structure. In the future, all terminal block products with different connection technologies will be pooled together under the generic heading Klippon Connect. This includes termi-nal blocks with PUSH IN connection,

tension clamp connection and screw connection. These are now supplemen-ted with our new A series, which some colleagues are sure to be familiar with already under the project name ‘ARC’. With the new product family – the A series - we are concentrating on time-saving and safe PUSH IN connection technology and are complementing the portfolio with innovative, application-oriented products with a high degree of customer benefit.

With the market launch of the newly developed A-series PUSH IN terminal block family, we are adapting the structure of our entire terminal block

A name with pedigree – a range with a futureThe name Klippon goes back a long way in our company. In 1959, we called our first international Group company in the United Kingdom "Klippon Electricals Ltd" – derived from the term "clip-on terminal" – as the name Weidmüller was hard to pronounce there. In the late 1970s, we marketed our plastic-insulated modular terminals under the same name worldwide. Since then, the term Klippon has primarily become associated with our stainless steel enclosures. And that’s still the case even today – because with the launch of our latest innovation, we are relaunching our entire terminal block portfolio under the generic heading Klippon Connect, giving it a name with a strong pedigree.

Our first Group company in England in 1959 was named “Klippon Electricals Ltd”.

Production in Detmold started in this building.

“With Klippon Connect for our ter-minal block portfolio and Klippon Protect for our enclosure system, we now offer two strong brands under the Weidmüller umbrella brand.”Marc Götte, Senior Brand Manager

range and bringing it together under the ‘Klippon Connect’ brand name. Our ultimate benchmark in so doing is how well we focus on our customers’ needs. What may appear complicated at first is underpinned by a clear structure. In the future, all terminal block products with different connection technolo-gies will be pooled together under the generic heading Klippon Connect. This includes terminal blocks with PUSH IN connection, tension clamp connection and screw connection. These are now supplemented with our new A series, which some colleagues are sure to be familiar with already under the project name ‘ARC’. With the new product family – the A series - we are concen-trating on time-saving and safe PUSH IN connection technology and are com-plementing the portfolio with innovati-ve, application-oriented products with a high degree of customer benefit.

In parallel, going forward we will be marketing our enclo-sure system for all industrial zones under the name Klippon Protect. This includes all pro-ducts and enclosures that were previously brought together under the Klippon name. As with Klippon Connect, in the future Klip-pon Protect will comprise a universal range and special application products designed for defined application fields with specific protection requirements

in the field. We are supplementing Klippon Connect and Klippon Protect with selected customer services. Examples for Klippon Connect modular terminal blocks include the Weidmüller Configurator, a software package for choosing and configuring our products, and our fast-track delivery and assem-bly service. And our service offering for the Klippon Protect enclosure system includes selection wizards for distribu-tor housings and assemblies. We are thus making an integral contribution to optimising our customers’ value creati-on chains.

“With Klippon Connect for our terminal block portfolio

and Klippon Protect for our enclo-sure system, we now offer two strong brands under the Weidmüller umbrella brand", Götte is convinced. "At the same time, with our A-series univer-sal and application products we are contributing significantly to raising our customers' productivity, efficiency and safety and thus proactively help shape the development of terminal block ma-nufacturing – just as we have done in the past as the inventor of the plastic-insulated terminal block and PUSH IN connection technology.”

The right range for every requirement – with the new universal and application pro-ducts, as well as maxGUARD.

the customer quickly to the relevant information. The key advantages of our solution are therefore always discussed and proven in the context of customer processes.

The market launch campaign is also very striking. “We’ve developed a highly emotional motif for the market launch which speaks to the target group in terms of their own world and at the same time makes the idea of Klippon Connect visible and tangible” explains Tosha Hübert whose responsibilities as Project Manager for the creative include visual implementation. “The ex-aggerated futuristic representation, the exciting perspectives and the floating position of the panel in our campaign motif draws a lot of attention and ensu-res high recognition,” continues Hübert.

Besides the microsite, there was a Klippon Connect zone at the Hannover Messe with four exhibition panels for the universal and application range, control wiring, including maxGuard and signal wiring. A video screen measu-ring almost 5 m x 3 m showing the campaign video attracted attention and our new Weidmüller Configurator could be tested on a touchscreen. “Customers also had the chance to test the interac-

tive offline version of the microsite on the back of the machine construction panel”, Hübert explains. An eye-cat-ching and dynamic dance show with music and fast movement also drew attention beyond the stand.

All further communication material (online and offline) is closely dovetailed with the microsite and provides a comprehensive overview of the entire service range on offer. This includes a prize competition at the Hannover Messe, several polo shirts and gi-veaways as part of the the campaign concept, as well as a 60-page product information brochure on Klippon Con-nect and maxGuard. Mailings, various displays in eleven languages, product sample cards, product sample lists and a product sample case with an application-oriented product sample including accessories serve to round off the range. “At the same time there are special media for wholesalers", Hübert stresses. "By focussing heavily on cus-tomer needs across all our media we can offer simple, transparent access to Klippon Connect.”
