Kennedy TheatreYesterday, Today, and TomorrowIn the early 1960s, Farrington Hall, the home of the De-partment of Drama and Theatre since 1930, was on its last legs. Thanks to the efforts of the department’s core faculty at that time, Earle Ernst, Joel Trapido, and Ed-ward Langhans, who had devoted themselves to build-ing a world-class facility in the center of the Pacific that could house the best of Asian and Western theatre and dance, a new theatre was rising on the opposite end of the campus. Originally planned as part of the federally funded East-West Center, the building was designed by an up and coming architect named I. M. Pei. The the-atre was all set for its grand opening in late 1963, when the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22 occurred. The UH Board of Regents decided to proceed with the premiere, but only after naming the theatre in the late president’s honor. On December 4, 1963, the John F. Kennedy Theatre staged its first production, the Kabuki drama Benten the Thief.

Since that dramatic beginning, Kennedy Theatre has been the home facility for students studying theatre and dance at UH Mänoa: over 800 productions have been staged—over 750,000 people have been in the audienc-es—more than 140,000 school-age children have seen youth theatre productions—and it’s a good guess that over 20,000 students have been on stage or behind the scenes in productions.

With seeds planted by Dr. Ernst, the department has grown into an internationally recognized program for the study of Asian Theatre. Students come from all over the world to study in the fields of Japanese, Chi-nese, and Southeast Asian theatre. The productions are all performed in English, but guest artists are in residence to teach students the specific skills needed to produce as authentic an experience of Asian theatre as possible. premieres, and audiences are thrilled to see the beauti-ful pageantry of the productions which feature tradition-al scenery, costumes, headdresses, and make-up. Pro-ductions such as The Forty-Seven Samurai directed by James R. Brandon have toured the mainland U.S. Three different Jingju (Beijing opera) productions, The Phoe-nix Returns From Its Nest, Yu Tangchun—The Jade Hall of Spring, and Judge Bao and the Case of Qin Xianglian, were invited by the Chinese government to tour China. Productions aren’t limited to those from Japan or China as works from Indonesia, India, Korea, the Philippines, and other areas, have exposed students and audiences to theatre from around the globe.

It doesn’t stop there. Twenty-two differ-ent plays (some done more than once!) from the Shakespeare canon have been directed on the Kennedy stage by Earle Ernst, Joel Trapido, Terence Knapp, Glenn Cannon, and now Paul Mitri. Al-bee, Brecht, Pinter, O’Neill, Shaw, and Williams are just a few of the modern playwrights whose works have enlight-ened audiences and provided wonderful training opportunities for students. The dance program trains students in modern dance and ballet, but also offers classes in many forms of Pacific-Asian dance. Annual concerts always provide a unique mix of dance from the West and the East in these varied and entertaining programs.

Kennedy Theatre has also influenced the rest of the Hawaiÿi theatre community.

Kumu Kahua Theatre, well-known for its production of plays by and for Hawai‘i’s people, had its roots on the Mänoa campus. Lisa Matsumoto developed her enormously popular pidgin plays while a graduate student in the youth theatre pro-gram, and went on to found ‘Ohiÿa Pro-ductions. Mänoa Valley Theatre, Hawai‘i Shakespeare Festival, Iona Dance The-atre, and several of the growing group of improvisational theatres in Honolulu owe much of their identity to students whose work began at Mänoa. Graduates have ended up in film and television, on Broadway, teaching in many major uni-versities, as well as acting and designing in regional theatres across the country.

Today, the faculty numbers 17, all ex-perts in their fields. Twenty-nine staff, lecturers, and graduate assistants help with teaching and producing the plays.

Kennedy Theatre has been around for 45 years, 15 more years than Farrington Hall. So what does the future hold? Plans are in the design stages for a state-of-the art addition to Kennedy Theatre that will create much needed classrooms, dance studios, labora-tories, and storage facilities. But the jewel of the new design is a 299-seat “courtyard” theatre that will house more intimate productions. Perhaps by 2013, when Ken-nedy Theatre turns 50, construction will have begun on this new exciting facility that will lead the Department of Theatre and Dance into its next 50 years.

Established in 1907 and fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the University of Hawaiÿi is the state's sole public system of higher education. The UH System provides an array of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees and community programs on 10 campuses and through educational, training, and research centers across the state. UH enrolls more than 50,000 students from Hawaiÿi, the U.S. mainland, and around the world. For more information, visit www.hawaii.edu.

The University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

The 21st century is less than a decade old, and already we are be-ginning to feel that the world we left behind in the last century has become very distant indeed. Perhaps nowhere is that realization more deeply felt than in higher education. The students we are educating today are different from the students many of us knew (and were our-selves) just a few decades ago. Today’s undergraduates have impres-sive and sophisticated skills that we never dreamed of, as well as basic defi ciencies that we never imagined college students would have. How to prepare students for success in this new century by re-thinking some of the basic tenets of liberal education has become a present day imperative.

The University of Hawai‘i is a member of the Association of Ameri-can Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), and over the past year we have begun to address how to introduce some of the organization’s best ideas to the campus. One of AAC&U’s major initiatives is “Lib-eral Education and America’s Promise” (LEAP), a program that sets forth the kind of excellent learning that every student needs. LEAP emphasizes students becoming fully engaged in acquiring essential skills and integrated knowledge, and then applying that to real world situations.

To help us kick off a discussion of these ideas, we invited to cam-pus three national fi gures in the revitalization of liberal education in America: Carol Geary Schneider, president of AAC&U, Tori Haring-Smith, president of Washington and Jefferson College, and Judith Ramaley, president of Winona State University. These leaders met with Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, several vice chancellors, deans, and senior administrators, and, most importantly, with a large number of faculty members. As a result of these interactions, we realized that Mänoa already has many of the component parts of what AAC&U calls “high impact practices,” that is, practices that lead to an excellent liberal education. Our goal now is to identify and promote more of them, and integrate them more intentionally. We need to tell the story of the value of a liberal education more often to our students, and we need to prepare them for success in a world where highly developed skills like analysis, communication, and the integration of knowledge will become even more prized.

Over the next year we will further pursue the ideals described by “Liberal Education and America’s Promise.” We invite you to come along with us in our LEAP ahead. Let us know your thoughts on the future direction of liberal education. As alumni and friends of Arts and Sciences, you know as well as anyone what our students need to know if they are to be successful in this brave new world.

Sincerely,

Thomas R. Bingham Richard Dubanoski Joseph H. O’Mealy Alan H. Teramura

Aloha, Friends,

Last fall I wrote you about the launch of the CASAA Scholarship Endowment fund raising campaign and asked for your support. CASAA’s members and friends like you never cease to amaze me—you responded overwhelmingly and I’m ecstatic! Since the launch of the fund, CASAA has raised nearly $27,000. We’ve still got a ways to go, but I’m confident that we’ll achieve our $50,000 goal in no time. The endowment will permanently fund the CASAA Annual Scholarships. We will never spend the principal of the endowment, using only earnings to pay for the awards.

When you participate in a CASAA activity, you are supporting our scholarship program because everything that CASAA does has our scholarship program goals in mind. So please join us at special events, whether a wine pairing dinner or an alumni reunion like the one on May 22. Best of all, our events are fun! Just ask anyone who attends.

On behalf of CASAA’s wonderful board, let me add my sincerest “thanks” to all of CASAA’s supporters, so many of whom are included in the donor listing of this issue. You inspire us to continue our mission with gusto.

Warmest Aloha,

Bernadette Baraquio ‘94, BA Journalism CASAA President

Breakfast with DashefskyKHNL NBC news anchor and Arts & Sciences alumnus Howard Dashef-sky spoke about his experiences during his coverage of the 2008 Olym-pics at the annual fall breakfast gathering held at The Pacifi c Club in September.

Wine Pairing DinnerFriends enjoyed a fun evening at the 4th annual wine pairing dinner held on October 14, 2008 at Kapiÿolani Community College’s Ka ÿIkena Dining Room. Chef Grant Sato’s menu, complemented by Better Brands wines selected by Lyle Fu-jioka, satisfi ed every palate.

Auctions and doorprizes added to the festivities. Nearly $10,000 was raised for the CASAA Scholarship Endowment. Special thanks to those who generously contributed to the doorprize drawing and auction:

After service in the South Pacific and in occupied Japan, he pursued studies at Harvard University, receiving master’s and doctoral degrees in East Asian history. Sakai taught at the University of Nebraska from 1951-66 before joining UHM’s History Department in 1966 and serving as Dean of Summer Session, 1973-84. His fundamental commitment to enhancing Japan-U.S. understanding led him in various directions: sharing unique historical insights into Satsuma Han; establishing special English courses for the benefit of thousands of Japanese students; contributing towards the eventual founding of Pacific Asian Management Institute at the Shidler College of Business; heading the Japanese Consulate’s screening committee for the Japan Exchange and Teaching program; serving as board member of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation, and member of the Joseph Heco Society and the Hawaiÿi Committee for the Humanities.
