Today’s Program… Defibrillation at Kiwanis: You Could Save a Life
Doug Ziesemer and Larry French introduced speaker Jason Trojan from Huron Valley Ambulance Service (HVA). Jason brought an auto-mated external defibrillator (AED) and dummy to show how the de-vice “talks” and gives users verbal instructions to apply pads to the chest and deliver a shock when necessary to try and restore a heart-beat and pulse in an emergency. Also, Jason demonstrated how to properly apply chest compression (CPR) to sustain life until emer-gency personnel arrive and, with Luke Panning’s help, showed how to conduct a Heimlich maneuver to help a person who is choking.
The presentation was very informative, and Jason answered several questions about the various life-saving procedures and the AED de-vice. Doug Ziesemer announced that an AED is located in Ned’s Place at KCD. Another is planned to be installed on the lower level at KCD, and an AED will be installed on the wall along the corridor outside the meeting/dining room at KCW. Doug talked about HVA and how the organization has worked for more than 40 years to educate the public and save lives.

Fines: Dale Leslie proposed a fine on all members are going to Florida during the winter months. Passed.
Nick Dever proposed a fine on Dale Leslie because he is not going to Florida during the winter but he is helping Dave Drake find lodging in Florida.
Nick Dever addressed former president Ron Gardner and proposed a fine on anyone who does not have the same occupation as guest, Mitch Goodkin. President Betsy raised a point of order noting that members should not vote on incomplete information. This caused a scuffle and raised a potential violation of the by-laws. Nick came to the rescue noting that he is the co-chair of the by-laws committee and his proposed fine was ad-dressed to former President, Ron Gardner, who approved it and, as such, the fine stands. Passed. Guest Goodkin, as it turned out, is an attorney.
Another distinguished Kiwanian proposed a fine on everyone who worked at KCW last weekend. Passed.
Finally, Bill Robb proposed a fine on everyone who had not already been fined today. Passed.
Happy Dollars: Dale Leslie honored Dale Griggs for his service visiting veterans at the VA and those incar-cerated in the county jail. Don Kossick is happy that Circle K member Caroline Sayers is leaving soon for an internship in Switzerland. Bob Carr is happy with the newsletter and thinks it is the best Kiwanis newsletter he has seen <Publisher’s Note: On behalf of the many people who make the newsletter what it is, thanks Bob!>. Sally Lamkin is happy for plumb-ing skills and expertise of Bob Johnson. John Schenk is happy that his grandson, a junior at the Citadel, was recently appointed to the Honor Court, the highest honor the Citadel bestows.
