By following these steps you are allowing classrooms to start learning programs at 8:55am sharp. We have included

an article on Emotional resilience later in this newsletter. Thank you for your support in helping your child be the

best they can be.

PTA in cooperation with the Kismet Staff will be hosting the ever popular Father’s Day Breakfast on Friday 30th August at 7:45am in the gymnasium. Classrooms will also be open from 8:15am welcoming Fathers to have a look at their child’s work and learning envi-ronment. 7:45 – 8:30am Breakfast 8:15 – 9:00am Classrooms open for visits Invitations along with further details will be sent home early next week.

Approximately 30 per cent of parents were invited (by email) or mail (where an email address was not available to

us) to participate in this year’s survey.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any

convenient time between Monday 2nd July and Sunday 11th August on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or

smartphones. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The online survey will be available in a range of languages

other than English. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September and will be com-

municated to parents through School Council and our annual reporting processes. Thank you or your participation—

your feedback is highly valued.

Our 2020 enrolment has commenced. We ask any current families to complete their enrolment of younger siblings

as soon as possible to assist us with planning for next year. As the number of student enrolments determines staffing

and classroom numbers, it is vital that we establish student numbers for 2020 as early as possible. When enrolling a

child, please bring proof of age (e.g. Birth Certificate or Passport) and a Immunisation Certificate. Information re-

garding immunisation certificates can be found at http:www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/public/services/acir/keeping-

track.jspcords are accurate.

Emotional Resilience

As part of our Y ou Can Do It! students are encouraged to develop core skills of Confidence, Organisa-

tion, Getting Along, Persistence and Resilience. Term 3 is a very busy and productive time for learning.

Our students are often faced with challenges in their learning, friendships or extra-curricular activities

such as Wakakirri. For some it may be entering the classroom on their own each morning. To enable

them to be the best they can be it is extremely important that they have the resilience to take on these

challenges in a positive and confident manner. We as adults can support our children to learn valuable

strategies that will keep them in good stead for the rest of their lives. This week we have provided you

with some useful information for promoting resilience as well as demonstrating to your children what

you do when the going gets tough!

Emotional Resilience for children means…not getting extremely angry, worried or down, calming

down when I do get very upset, not fighting or staying away from people when I am very upset and

bounding back to work or play.

Examples of Emotional Resilience:

Not getting extremely angry and fighting when someone is mean or acts unfairly

Not worrying a lot about having to take a test or meeting someone

Not getting very down and staying away from people after receiving a bad result or if someone says

something bad about me

Calming down when I am extremely angry, down, or worried and bounding back to work or play.

Strategies to Help Me be Resilient:

Accepting Myself means not thinking badly about myself when I make a mistake.

Taking Risks means thinking that it’s good to try something new, even though I might not be able to

do it.

Being Independent means thinking that it’s important to try new activities and to speak up, even if

classmates think I’m silly.

I Can Do It means thinking that I’m more likely to be successful than to fail.

Working Tough means thinking that in order to be successful in the future, I sometimes have to do

things that are not easy or fun in the present.

Being Tolerant of Others means not making overall judgements of people (eg. “good person” “bad

person”) based on their differences or behaviour.

Things To Do To Help Me Be Resilient:

Relaxing, keeping things in perspective, find-

ing someone to talk to, using positive self-

talk or finding something fun to do. Share

what you do to maintain a resilient mindset

and show them the benefits of perseverance,

confidence and understanding.

Congratulations to the following students who were awarded into the 25 Club for displaying our school values 25 times. They have all been awarded with a leaf to add to our school values tree and a certificate at assembly last week to mark this achievement.

We have all as teachers of writing been inspired by our day with re-nowned author and writing educa-tion consultant Alan Wright. In the coming weeks ask your child about their Writer’s Notebook and en-courage them to write as much as you can at home. Some quotes from Alan that you might also find ignite your passion for writing or helping your child write at home. Some quotes from Alan “A cure for boredom is curiosity - Be Curious” “Keep writing until the good words appear” “Writing is a problem solving activity, have the students seen you grapple with that yourself” “Allow your students to practice making decisions about their writing” “I notice that you've been doing a lot of recounts, could you write about this another way?” “Celebrate when your students take a risk and try something new” “Writers react and they need a place to record those reactions” “We need to help kids engage in wordplay” “Students may include sketches, photos, diagrams, artifacts, or other visual representations - any material that represents the writer’s thinking or feeds the writing process” “If you choose to write you choose to live life twice” “Teachers need to write - If you don’t write, they don’t understand their struggle and their joy” “In order to be the best possible teachers of writing we must be prepared to write. Otherwise, we are simply pretending” “It doesn't matter what you choose to write, just write” “You need to broaden a child’s reading diet” “If a writer gets a reaction from your or provokes a feeling they have done a great job” “A great piece of writing will evoke a response” “As teachers we must mindfully teach, provide powerful models from your own writing and authors you admire. This will reveal the magic of writing to inexperienced writers and make it more accessible” “Writing is fun and rewarding when it feels real. So writing needs to be approached in a way that teaches how to write rather than what to write” “If kids don’t have choice, then they don’t have a voice. If you want kids engaged they need to have a choice and a voice” “Choice motivates efforts to write and this in turn builds confidence and consequently the desire to stage engaged is heighted for the writer” “Ideas exist in things”

When conducting school tours visitors to Kismet always comment on the student art work that is displayed in corridors, classrooms and galleries. Our classroom teachers are enjoying teaching students concepts of Visual Arts. Students recently have discussed how artists express ideas and use materials, techniques and visual conventions in art works. Classes have recently looked at the work of the artist Wassily Kandin-sky and used his art to inspire their own art works.

Thank you to the families that donated to our emergency cupboard in sickbay, these clothes will be extremely handy.
