SAFARI AWARdS 2016 25 Kirk Thomas Kirk Thomas was born and raised in Meridian, MS where he grew up hunting & fish- ing with his father and brothers. His first-ever hunt was a dove hunt when he was about nine years old. Kirk was injured in November of 1992 while hunt- ing alone in the woods not far from his home in Georgia. A tree fell on him when he was walking back to his truck, crush- ing his back and shoulder and breaking several ribs. Several hours after the accident, a friend found him lying face down and waving his orange vest. Kirk spent 52 days in the hospital. He lives with constant nerve pain. Upon discharge from rehab, he went directly back to work. The next deer season, he was back in the woods crossbow hunting on his own. Kirk can take on most any obstacle or challenge without any special adaptive equipment. He has harvested a bull elk and shot a 2500 bison in Saskatchewan, and a 180” whitetail in Missouri. He loves to duck hunt and dove hunt every year in Georgia. Kirk founded the Wheelin’ Sportsmen Program of the NWTF in 1996. He created Outdoors Without Limits, host- ing 100’s of hunting, fishing, shooting & archery events over the years for anyone with a disability. He belongs to the National Rifle Association, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Quality Deer Management Association. Kirk has spoken at churches, schools, museums, cruise ships, wild game suppers, etc., telling his story and promot- ing disabled hunting. He brings his inspiring message to thousands of people. In 1998, he initiated the Disabled Sportsmen Access act and spoke before Congress to have 30 million acres of military land opened to disabled hunters. Monica Kamal In January 2001 Monica Kamal of Madison, Wisconsin, was volun- teering for one of her son’s school field trips to a local ski hill, when she tried to avoid a collision and her skis caught the side of the run causing her to lose balance, fall and slide into a tree. The accident caused a spinal cord injury paralyzing her at mid-chest. She participated in physical therapy and rehab the first year of her injury. Monica relearned to par- ticipate in many adaptive sports and recreation activities including kayaking and bicycling. Monica did not grow up in a hunting family. She has only hunted as a disabled person using a tripod or a Caldwell shooting system to help hold her crossbow or rifle in posi- tion. Her first hunting experience took place in 2010 when she attended a learn-to-hunt Becoming An Outdoors Woman workshop. She has hunted every year since 2010 harvesting turkey and pheasant in Wisconsin, but has yet to harvest a whitetail deer. In 2014, Monica was given the opportunity to hunt in Wyoming for mule deer and antelope. The trip was successful for both. Monica is a member of the Dane County Pheasants Forever, Oregon Sportsman’s Club, Access Ability WI, National Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited and is a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources certified Hunter Education Safety Instructor Monica is the founding member of Madison Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Inc. In 2013, she started Access Ability Wisconsin (AAW), an organization dedicated to facilitating and providing the means for individuals with mobility chal- lenges to access and enjoy Wisconsin’s natural resources. She coordinated topics for discussion with the Madison Interfaith facilitator 2008-2009. She volunteers and facilitates projects for different nonprofits to acquire adaptive outdoor equipment to help persons with disabilities. Monica is a cer- tified facilitator for “Living Well with a Chronic Condition” with the Wisconsin Institute of Healthy Aging. Monica has even more volunteer activities that mentioned here. She is dedicated to helping others through all of her volunteering.
