Dear Friends,Promises. What does it mean to make a promise? At KIPP LA, we measure our success based on the number of KIPPsters who are persisting on the path to and through college. Promises can be diffi cult to keep, and climbing the mountain to college isn’t easy. As we watch our students make incredible gains in and out of the classroom each year, we are inspired to follow their example and continue our work to raise the quality of education both within our schools and across Los Angeles. Today, over 5,000 students and alumni attend our schools or participate in our KIPP Through College program, all with the promise that KIPP LA has made since day one: to support our students through college graduation.

The 2013-14 school year was an exciting one at KIPP LA. In February, we completed our fi rst ground-up construction project: KIPP Empower Academy’s permanent home in South Los Angeles. We also broke ground over the summer on a permanent facility for KIPP Iluminar Academy and KIPP Sol Academy in East Los Angeles. We raised $29 million to support these facilities through the issuance of a bond off ering. These exciting developments enable our schools to provide high-quality academic and enrichment programs while meeting the growing needs of their communities.

We are expanding our impact to reach even more students and families in South and East Los Angeles. By 2020, we plan to operate 20 schools and serve approximately 13,000 students and alumni. Our team is working hard to ensure that we can give each student the high-quality education they so deserve while building the foundation we will need to serve even more students each year.

As KIPP LA has proven over the past 11 years, we must work as a Team and Family to scale what we do every day while we grow. That means sharing eff ective practices and lessons across our schools; it means promoting and supporting leadership pathways throughout our organization; and it means developing an agile and resourceful support team that works hard to ensure our schools can keep the focus on teaching and learning. Through innovation and collaboration, we will build a community centered on excellence—no matter what.

Promises. Whether we make 13 or 13,000, they are all our responsibility to keep. That sacred bond motivates us each and every day to help our KIPPsters develop the academic skills and character traits they need to be successful in high school, college, and life. And it is what motivates us to continue seeking innovative solutions and partners to help us continue to prove what is possible in public education.

Thank you for helping us fulfi ll our promise to our KIPPsters.

Sincerely,

Marcia AaronExecutive Director

i show curiosity when...I don’t ever stop asking the question why. Why are there more earthquakes in California? Why are the polar ice caps melting? I’m so excited to fi nd these answers and learn about new things.

BEYOND ACADEMICSkipp’s character education fuels learning through seven strengths that are shown to be highly predictive of success in life. These strengths give teachers, students, and families a meaningful way to talk about and develop character both in and out of the classroom. As a result, students can identify growth and strength in their own work and have the vocabulary to support and recognize them in others.

INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSleadership at kipp la happens at all levels. Our leadership competency model leverages talent development tools and provides access to leadership pathways that support leaders at all levels of their development. Each teacher is an instructional leader in his or her classroom and is empowered to create lessons that are e ective for all students. Teachers can pursue leadership roles such as grade level chair, teacher mentor, or dean. These roles empower teachers to provide instructional support and impact student outcomes beyond their classroom. KIPP LA also identifi es, selects, and develops individuals to lead schools where everyone from students to teachers are learning and growing daily.

INNOVATION

BEYOND SOLVING PROBLEMSpersonalized instruction provides students the support they need, when and where they need it the most. Being innovative in the classroom is not just about solving problems. It is about creating solutions that work for every student. Many of our schools use a personalized learning approach that allows teachers to provide targeted instruction to students in small groups. With data from adaptive software and assessments, our teachers are able to modify their instruction in real time to meet the diverse learning needs of their students.

Other KIPP LA schools use personalized learning principles to integrate technology into each lesson in a meaningful way. This includes using Chromebooks to conduct Internet research for a science presentation or to complete mini-quizzes after an English lesson. Additionally, all schools use Google Applications for Education, allowing students to collaborate more eff ectively and create digital portfolios of their classwork to track their progress.

Teachers and students also innovate offl ine through cross-curricular projects. For example, at KIPP LA Prep, students design a skateboard in art and use it to explore physics in science. This innovative collaboration builds students’ skills in both subjects and brings lessons to life.

Page 8: KIPP LA Schools 2014 Annual Report

personalized learning takes on different forms at each kipp la school. Students are grouped together based upon their individual learning goals. Groups rotate among academic stations, ensuring students have an opportunity to interact with content in di erent formats. Rotations occur both in English Language Arts and math. Teachers use data from academic software programs to determine where students are excelling or struggling to better target instruction.

TARGETING INSTRUCTION

KIPPsters use tablets (or Chromebooks)to access adaptive academic software programs, which track progress and mastery of concepts. The programs complement the day’s instruction and get more challenging as students’ skills grow throughout the year.

Small groups give teachers time to provide targeted or one-on-one instruction. During this lesson, the teacher uses a whiteboard to illustrate a narrative concept and writing prompt. The teacher can also check each student’s response for accuracy and provide real-time feedback.

KIPPsters are encouraged to be comfortable when engaging with technology, allowing them to fi nd a space that is most conducive to their learning style. This gives them a sense of responsibility and accountability for their learning.

An apprentice teacher works with another small group of students to provide academic support. This additional instruction ensures that every student is receiving the personalized support he or she needs. In other classrooms, students at this station engage in rigorous independent work or reading.

PERSONALIZATION

Page 9: KIPP LA Schools 2014 Annual Report

“having an advisor outside of school makes you feel important—like someone has your back. Working with Carmen has helped me shape what I look for in a college. She opened my eyes to the di erent factors you have to look for in a college to fi nd the right fi t for yourself.

Once you leave KIPP, it’s easy to get lost in high school. It’s important to have an advisor like Carmen because she helps me stay on track.”

JESSYKA KIPP ACADEMY OF OPPORTUNITY ALUMNA

“what makes ktc unique is that it’s highly personalized for the population kipp la serves. We focus not only on helping our alumni get into college, but making sure they’re able to stay through scholarships, fi nancial aid, and social and emotional supports.

Jessyka is a born leader. She not only wants to help herself, but her peers too, which is one of the things we aim to cultivate in our KIPPsters.”

CARMEN SOTO KIPP THROUGH COLLEGE ADVISOR

COLLEGE COMPLETION

TO AND THROUGH COLLEGEkipp la’s kipp through college (ktc) program is a vital part of supporting our students to and through college. KTC advisors support students with high school and college placement, applications, scholarships, and networking opportunities. The team also provides resources for families to encourage a college-going culture at home. On the ground, this means building deep one-on-one relationships with alumni, as KTC College Advisor Carmen Soto and KIPP LA alumna Jessyka explain above.

A BETTER TOMORROW

*For the 2013-14 school year, California did not administer its standardized tests and the related Academic Performance Index (API) scores that enable comparisons across schools. The results from the last testing period in 2013 show that KIPP LA’s students signifi cantly outperform their peers at both the district and state level.

ACADEMIC IMPACTif kipp la were a district, it would be the highest-performing in los angeles serving a majority of students from low-income communities. KIPP LA’s success is founded on the belief that, with excellent teaching and support, all students will learn and achieve regardless of their demographics or zip codes. The promise of supporting our students and alumni in school, college, and life is at the center of what we do, and will continue to be as we grow to 20 schools over the next fi ve years.

EXPANDING OUR IMPACTkipp la is growing to 20 schools by 2020, at which point we will serve nearly 9,000 students and 4,000 alumni. As we grow, we have two goals in mind: to provide our KIPPsters with an excellent education and to close the college completion gap that exists between students in low-income communities and their peers in more a uent communities. Our growth plan is vital to ensure that more students in South and East Los Angeles receive the high-quality education they deserve. Through innovative operational practices and a sustainable fi nancial model, KIPP LA will continue to honor the promises we’ve made to our students and families by supporting more students on the path to and through college.
