Welcome to The Villager Magazine.

Along with the month of May comes the anticipation of warmdays, alfresco dining and time in the garden.

Generally the brighter sunnier days of May also show up all ofthe jobs around the house and garden which need to be done.Lately there have been reports of bogus callers in the localarea offering there services on the spot then demanding largesums of money for shoddy or unfinished work, remember spe-cialist jobs need professional trades people, don’t get caughtout and end up paying twice for the work, use a reputable localcompany. Inside The Villager you will find trades people withall of the skills you are looking for, many of them will happilysupply you with a free quote and referrals from their satisfiedcustomers.

If you have a local business and would like to let people knowmore about your products or services advertising in The Vil-lager is a very cost effective way of getting your messageacross to thousands of readers. Just give me a call to find outmore!

The British asparagus season traditionally begins on 1st May and runsfor around seven to eight short, but delicious weeks, lasting just eightweeks, ending on Mid Summers Day, Saturday, June 21.

British asparagus is hailed by leading chefs as the best in the world. While we might all grumble about the British weather, the UK climateallows asparagus stems to develop slowly producing a full, sweetflavour and a fine, tender texture quite unlike any other crop. And be-cause it’s grown on our doorstep, we can enjoy British asparagus atits most flavoursome and nutritious – that’s no doubt why, during theseason, we eat every last British asparagus spear ourselves, not oneis exported overseas.

Antony Worrall Thompson says: “Everything tastes better when it’sbeen harvested here in the UK. This is particularly true of asparagus. The beginning of the asparagus season is a highlight of the culinaryyear.”

Remember British asparagus is only in season for a short while. Don’t miss the chance to taste it. Lookout for it in supermarkets, greengrocers and farm shops now and feast while you can!

British Asparagus SeasonDon’t miss the chance to taste it

HOW TO PREPARE NAKED ASPARAGUSBoiling or steamingIt is a good idea to tie the asparagus in bundles of10-12 spears for cooking, so they can be quicklyremoved from the water all at once.To boil: sub-merge in a large pan of boiling water, cover andcook for 3-6 minutes. To steam: stand the asparagus in 3 inches of boil-ing water, cover and cook for 3-6 minutes.

RoastingRoasting and chargrilling produce an intense smokyflavour quite distinct from boiling or steaming. To roast: pre-heat the oven (220°C, gas mark 7),place asparagus on baking sheet and drizzle over alittle olive oil. Roast for approximately 10 minutes, turning a few times depending on the thickness ofthe spears. Stems should be soft, not limp, tipsshould be slightly crunchy.

Ian Dickens Productions present RonAldridge’s comedy It’s Never Too Lateon stage from Tuesday 20th to Saturday24th July. Widely respected stage andtelevision actress Joanna Van Gyseghem(probably best known for the role ofLinda Cochran in the sitcom Duty Free)is joined by well loved actor Jeffrey Hol-land (Hi-De-Hi, Oh, Dr Beeching! andYou Rang M’Lord?) and Judy Buxton (OnThe Up).

What happens when your husbandleaves you for a younger woman? Howdo you kick start your life when you’venever had to work? How do you copewith the realisation that time is not onyour side?

Susan Shaw, at 58, finds herself in ex-actly this situation. She’s run the home, brought up her daughter and had a verybusy life involved with charities, village-hall committees etc. Fellow committeemembers offer all kinds of advice ‘thinkof yourself… get fit… find yourself a toy-boy’

Susan decides to take this action, andthis very funny, and times very tenderplay follows Susan as she attempts anew start in life in the belief that “it’snever too late”, and culminates with herhaving to make a most unexpectedchoice.

kittens, very adventurous in where they willexplore! Also, don't forget the garden, most pups have a natural instinct to dig, soyou may have to cope with various holes inthe flowerbeds for some time!

Young pups also need training in general,'sit' and 'stay' do not always come naturallyand, given the boundless levels of energymost young dogs have, they also needplenty of exercise. Most adult dogs willcome with all this training in place and, es-pecially if you chose an older one, don'tneed nearly as much walking as youngerdogs. The best rescue centres will work withtheir animals to find out how much theyknow, they will also assess them for theirsuitability in different homes, for examplehow well they get on with children or otherpets, and ensure they don't have any sig-nificant behavioural issues. They also tendto be careful about which dogs go withwhich people, meaning they will help youfind a pet who will be best suited to yourhome and lifestyle. Adult, rescue pets areparticularly great for older people, who ben-efit from the companionship an animalbrings but who may not be able to copewith one requiring lots of exercise or care.

And what about rabbits? They are now thethird most popular pet in the UK but theyare also one of the most likely to bedumped. There aren't many rescue centresfor rabbits and those that do exist are al-ways bursting at the seams. Also, all rab-bits are cute, so you won't be missing outon the 'arrr' factor even if you get a grownup one!

Pets

When most people consider getting a newpet, their thoughts turn to a cute bundle offluff. Certainly a puppy or kitten will pro-vide hours of entertainment but they canalso be a lot of hard work. However, thisdoesn't mean you can't have a pet, withrescue centres over-flowing with readytrained adult animals, you could just findyour perfect companion!

The first problem when you want a new, young animal is where to get one from. Itcan be difficult to know how to find abreeder who will have produced the pups orkittens responsibly. Sadly, many young an-imals are bred by those in it only for themoney, the worst examples being thepuppy farms, who make big efforts to hidethemselves. This is an advantage of therescue centres, many of whom will have lit-ters as well as adult animals, you know byhoming an animal from them you are notsupporting poor breeding practices Even ifyou want a particular breed of dog or cat, don't count out the possibility of a rescueone, most breeds will have at least one res-cue club.

Young animals, although lots of fun, can bevery hard work to look after, particularlypuppies. In the early stages they can't beleft alone for long periods and few sleepthrough the night straight away, which canbe tiring to say the least! It can also takesome time for them to establish good toilettraining habits. You can't be too house-proud with a young animal, not only do youget 'presents' on the carpet, some are pro-lific chewers and, particularly with the

If you have any questions about this or any other pet related subject, you should speak to your vet.

Foster Care Fortnight, co-ordinated by UK-widecharity the Fostering Network, begins on Mon-day 17 May. Under the strapline do you havethe skills to foster? The campaign encouragespeople to consider a career in fostering and asksthem to look at the skills and qualities they havewhich could make them a great foster carer.

Foster care has changed dramatically over thelast 30 years. Today fostering is a career, uniquely combining family life with a skilled pro-fession.

There is a shortage of at least 10,000 foster car-ers across the UK, and more foster carers areneeded to provide children with safe and caringhomes while they are unable to live with theirown families. A diverse range of people with theright skills and qualities are required to meetthe needs of children in care.

Campaign co-ordinator Helen Clarke said: ‘Fos-ter carers have a vital role to play in giving chil-dren in care the best possible chance in life. Butthe shortage of foster carers means that far toomany children live a long way from home, fam-ily and school, often apart from their brothersand sisters. Foster Care Fortnight is the idealtime for people to find out more about fosteringand the skills and qualities needed to be a mod-ern foster carer.’

During the fortnight fostering services all overthe UK will be holding imaginative, innovativeand fun events aimed at raising awareness offostering. The events provide an opportunity formembers of the public to meet existing fostercarers and learn more about a career in foster-ing.

People wanting more information about becom-ing a foster carer should contact their local fos-tering service, call Fosterline on 0800 040 7675,email [email protected], or visitwww.couldyoufoster.org.uk

The Fostering Network is the UK’s leading char-ity for all those involved in fostering, and aimsto make life better for fostered children and thefamilies that care for them.

HOW TO CREATEA SUMMERHANGING BASKETYOU WILL NEED

A wire basket - Compost

Sphagnum moss - Summer bedding plants

A watering can with a rose attachment

Slow release granular fertiliser

Water retaining crystals

Step 1. Prepare the compost and mossMix your compost with the slow release granular fertiliserand water retaining crystals. This will nourish your plantsand give them a better chance of survival. Soak the moss itin a bucket of water for an hour or so before planting.

Step 2. Line the basketPlace your basket on a pot to keep it steady and line thebottom with a layer of moss, make sure it is quite thick andwring out any excess water before you start. Place Surfinaand Indian Mint on to the moss, protruding from the sidesof the basket.Continue to line the basket with a second ring of moss ontop of the plants, leaving the centre clear, fill the centrewith your compost , up to the top of your moss ring.

Step 3. Repeat the process of lining and fillingPlacing the plants in alternate holes to that of the perviouslayer to ensure that you have an attractive pattern. Makesure the roots come in contact with the soil in the basket. With your top ring of moss wrap it round the rim of thebasket to get a nice finish.

Step 4. PlantingIf you have used water retaining crystals in your compost, leave the basket for approximately three hours beforeplanting into the soil. The crystals can cause the soil toexpand dramatically, so this will give you the chance toremove any excess that may occur, and leave an even bed.Start planting your summer plants, gently opening the rootsbefore placing into the soil. Once you are happy with yourarrangement, water the basket with an entire watering can.

The half moon manicure is taking the fashion andbeauty world by storm, it's a new look in nails andeveryone is willing to try it. After all it's a twist to theclassic look of french tips so why not try it on yournails.

Designers such as Christian Dior, Thakoon and Ruf-fian have all tried the looks in their shows and nowyou can too!

This is a 1940’s classic look, where the 1/2 moonshape at the base of the nail is left bare, creating aclear cool silhouette.

Use a base coat to prepare and protect the nail plate, but carefully avoiding the 1/2 moon (closest to thecuticle).

Next using the same technique, paint the nails with 2coats of your favourite colour, followed by a top coat.

If you are a little unsteady at first, use a fine art brushdipped in nail polish remover to carefully tidy up thebottom edge shaping them in a smooth clean arc.

As you become more advanced, you can even paintthe half moons with another colour!

This trend can be incorporated into a manicure at yourlocal salon. At studio 524 Manicures start from as lit-tle as £12.

It is important to be aware of the differencesbetween these distinct acupuncture styles, philosophies and the depth of needlingpresently being used in this country. Withoutsuch knowledge, you will be unable to makean informed choice when choosing acupunc-ture.

A very small proportion of the British popula-tion know that there are different styles ofacupuncture. The assumption is that acupunc-ture is "acupuncture" from whomever you re-ceive it or wherever they've trained.

This is misleading and unfortunately the terms'acupuncture', 'traditional acupuncture', 'FiveElement acupuncture' and 'Medical Acupunc-ture' are all used.

ACUPUNCTURE

STYLESChinese, Westernor Five Elements?

Traditional Acupuncture based on TraditionalChinese Medicine (TCM) could mean

* the much more gentle and very shallowacupuncture commonly used by thosetrained in most of Britain's schools, or

* the type of more powerful acupunctureusing deeper needling performed inpresent day China(now available in Kinver from Gary Bate!)

Five Element Acupuncture has been devel-oped mainly in the West. It focuses on acu-points mainly located on the extremities of thearms and legs. Needle insertion is often veryshallow and brief. The word acupuncture givesno clear description of the exact type ofacupuncture being offered and it’s confusingfor the public.

British Medical Acupuncture - the publicshould be made aware that doctors, physio-therapists, osteopaths and chiropractors dovery short acupuncture training, normally just2 - 5 days. They mainly perform acupuncturefor pain relief relating to musculo-skeletalproblems. They do not recognise Qi Energy orMeridians and they do not use Chinese diag-nosis.

Homes & Gardens

Written by Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

Spring was a long time coming this year. Thewarmer weather through Easter week andbeyond finally got things going, and allthose early flowering plants that had waitedso long to unfold their blooms seemed to doso almost simultaneously. The daffodils weremagnificent, but because they were bloom-ing almost a month later than usual, theirdisplay did not last so long. My 'Patiola' vio-las have been superb. They attempted toflower through much of the winter, but theharsh conditions held them back. Looking atthem now, it is very difficult to believe thatthey have survived such low temperaturesand are now doing so well. My May floweringtulips have followed the daffodils, and arenow producing a rainbow of brilliant coloursabove a more subtle carpet of powder blueforget-me-nots. The garden is now at the cli-max of it's spring display, but already someshops are selling summer bedding plants. With such a late spring, the difficult decisionhas to be made as to when to sacrifice thelater part of the spring display in order toclear the space for our summer bedding.Leave it too late and the choice of plants willbe limited and the natural propensity ofplants to flower rather than put on moregrowth will restrict the overall display thissummer if planting is left until well into June.Cold nights with the ever present possibil-

ity of a late frost is the real problem with thetiming when it comes to planting out ourbedding plants. The more tender subjects likebegonias, marigolds and busy lizzies are farbetter left until the end of May because theseplants will certainly be damaged by a latefrost. Other plants like antirrhinums, stocks, and even petunias will survive a degree ortwo of frost with little or no damage. What-ever you intend to plant, it is better to wait atleast until the middle of May before you riskanything outside. Even then, it is a good ideato have a few pieces of horticultural fleecehandy just in case. If a frost is expected, pinit down over your plants and all should bewell in the morning. By the end of the firstweek in June, all risk of frost should be over.

Many people like to plant up their hangingbaskets during April and early May, and keepthese in the greenhouse or conservatory fora couple of weeks to give time for the plantsto become established before hanging themon their brackets.

It is perfectly alright tohang these up out-of-doors from the middleof May, providing that you keep an eye on theweather, and bring them inside for the nightif frost is expected. They will in fact be all thebetter for being outside because greenhousescan get very hot towards the end of May, andplants can become drawn and rather leggy. In the vegetable plot, runner beans are still

kittens, very adventurous in where they willexplore!

Another advantage of choosing an adult an-imal from a rescue centre is that they tendto come neutered, vaccinated, mi-crochipped,and with any health problemshaving been assessed and treated. Theyare not an unknown quantity like a youngeranimal. Some, if you take on an animalwith an on-going health issue, will continueto pay for their care.

Deciding to get a new pet is an exciting timeand most people want a young animal. However, do consider a rescue pet beforeyou start phoning local breeders. Adult an-imals can make loyal, faithful companions, come to you with someone else havingdone all the hard work in training them andyou have the knowledge that you have donesomething to reduce the huge population ofunwanted pets in the UK. And, even if youdo have your heart set on a young animal, think of them first, they will often have lit-ters needing new homes. So, want to feelgood about yourself and get a great newpet into the bargain? Go on, give a dog ahome!
