PRESIDENTS REPORT

Petar Ivetic PRESIDENT

After 9 years as the President of our wonderful Club, it is with great pleasure I write my final report knowing

our Club is in a much better positioned than it was when I took the reins nine years ago.

Saying goodbye at season’s presentation in front of family, committee, life members, coaches and players

was difficult, however, the decision to move on and pass the baton to Mr. Brett Sebire is the right decision.

Brett and the committee will bring fresh ideas to grow the clubs brand and profile, and I sincerely wish the

Brett and the committee all the very best success for many years to come.

This season is one of transitions, with a new President and head coach for season 2018/19. On-field this season we didn’t meet

expectations and none of our sides played finals, and we fell well short in all grades. However, the culture of the playing group

remains strong and this is something our new head coach will no doubt build upon.

Moving forward, the number one priority and challenge for the club is to secure a second ground. Whilst we have had no support

from Kingston Council, we are fortunate Cricket Victoria (CV) have allowed us to use Ross Gregory oval. However, this will not be

our permanent second home and securing a second ground remains our highest priority.

The other challenge all sporting clubs face is sponsorship. This is becoming increasing difficult and I would like to thank our loyal

sponsors (National Infrastructure Solutions, Parkdale and Mentone Community Bendigo Bank and BLK).

COACHING

Head coach Mr. James Miller has decided to take time away from cricket to spend more time with his young family. James’s

contribution as the Club’s inaugural coach cannot be under estimated. James took on the job 11 weeks prior to season

commencing and managed to develop a playing list which has been competitive. In those 3 years, we defeated Prahran outright,

our first outright win in the first X1 for over 10 years and on 2 occasions we had wins in all 4 grades.

James is a person who has certainly been brought up with the right values and principles. He is extremely hard working, energetic,

passionate and disciplined and will always be known as our first coach. We wish James, Lynda and family all the very best.

With James resignation comes an opportunity for another young and developing coach, and I am delighted by the signing of Mr.

Brad Rossborough as head coach for the 2018/19 season. Brad is a very impressive young man who was assistant coach to James

last year and one who has the support of the committee and players. We wish Brad all the very best success this coming season.

HAWKS CRICKET ACADEMY & CRICKET SCHOOL

The 2018 Hawks Cricket Academy (HCA) and Cricket School (HCS) kicked off in March with an information evening at Walter Galt.

The Club refined the program and reduced the number of weeks from 14 to 10 plus participants from 50 to 25. We secured the

services of Mr. Peter Marshall to run the program, with support from, senior players and committee members.

All training sessions will be at the MCG and a big call out to CV for supporting the Hawks winter program not only for this season,

but for 9 seasons.

APPRECIATION

There are so many people I would like to thank over my nine-year journey.

Firstly, the current committee - another season of hard work, dedication and commitment.

All sporting clubs face the challenge of volunteers and we are very fortunate to have good and loyal volunteers at the Hawks.

Committee:

Brett Sebire: Vice President

Danny Stevenson: Treasurer

John Noonan: Administration Manager

Page 6: Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Clubkingstonhawthorn.vic.cricket.com.au/files/210/files... · Gaurav Kapoor Stuart King Marc La Brooy Shane McQuinn Bruce Wilson I would like to further

Sue Cater: General Committee

John Hand: General Committee

Greg McLeod: General Committee

Phil O’Meara: General Committee

David Scott: General Committee

Secondly, I would like to recognise previous committee members who have supported me:

Aaron Dragwidge

Gaurav Kapoor

Stuart King

Marc La Brooy

Shane McQuinn

Bruce Wilson

I would like to further recognise and pass on my deepest appreciation to the following who started the journey nine years’ ago.

Mr. Danny Stevenson, who has had many roles, Treasurer (current), head chef at Monash University, barman and all things IT.

Danny’s loyalty, dedication and contribution to our Club should never be under estimated. Our Club would not be in the financ ial

health it is without the continued support and dedication of Danny, and I am proud to call Danny a good friend and one I have

known for close to 20 years.

Mr. David Scott, who spent many hours at Monash University days working with the on-field to ensure we remained competitive.

David’s role was Director of Cricket, who worked countless hours ensuring we were run professionally. David is also moving on

from the committee due to family and work commitments and I would like to thank my good friend for all his hard work and

dedication to the club.

Mr. Gaurav Kapoor, who did a wonderful job on the committee being the player’s representative and managing all the odd jobs

that no one wanted (e.g. apparel). Gaurav, like Danny, David and Bruce worked closely with me to ensure a successful

amalgamation with Kingston Saints. Having an educated and mature player on the committee certainly helped with the lines of

communication to the players.

Mr. Bruce Wilson, the clubs Administration Manager when at Monash University. Bruce did an outstanding job when managing

the club’s administrative duties and I still recall the glowing feedback from CV and umpires on how our Club was organised.

Although Bruce moved to Melbourne Cricket Club prior to the amalgamation with Kingston Saints, he still pops in to the Hawks

and we speak on a regular basis.

One of the biggest challenges I faced as President was when we moved away from the proposed merger (or takeover) with

Dandenong Cricket Club. This was a very tough decision as it caused significant grief and angst with CV, however, with the support

and loyalty from Danny, David, Gaurav and Bruce ensured we amalgamated with a great Club in Kingston Saints.

Thirdly, our key stakeholder CV. If it wasn’t for Mr. Geoff Tamblyn and the CV board in 2009, we as a club would not have existed.

It was Geoff who supported the club and provided the loan, so we could pay all our debts. We have also had support from current

CV board and management with our amalgamation with Kingston Saints.

I would like to acknowledge Mr. Mike Ronchi (CV Strategy Manager) for his support and friendship and CV chairman Mr. Russell

Thomas.

Both gentleman have been great supporters of our Club and have attended club functions and when asked, always willing to say

a few words.

Furthermore, I would also to recognise the following for the tireless effort, support and dedication to the Club.

Mr. Craig Reece (Club historian) for scoring in the 1st X1

Mr. James Maloney for scoring in our 2nd X1

Ms. Annette Cann for operational management of the scoreboard at Walter Galt reserve

P a g e 7 | 50

Mr. Frank Miller as our net captain and 1st X1 team manager

Mr. Brian Hunt for all the hard work around the club on ensuring our grounds are prepared on game day and cleaning

out the club rooms

Mrs. Robyn McLeod and Mrs. Anne O’Meara orf canteen support with lunches and with special events

Mr. Mark Davies as our graphical designer and developing all the Clubs flyers

Mr. Andrew Greenwood for managing the bar and stock

Mr. Mark Ruddy for assisting with Thursday evening dinners, cooking the BBQ on Friday evenings for the Milo kids and

parents and Saturday afternoons

Mr. Darren Sheehan for stacking the bar and support on match days

It was deeply saddening to hear of the passing of Len Eddy (Life Member) this season. Although not in the best of health, Len

would turn up and spend the afternoon watching cricket. Len was a great person, with many a story and one who will be very

much missed.

There have been many memorable achievement and highlights (and some challenges) over the last nine years’. My highlights

include:

Debt demolition evening in January 2010 – raised $29,400

Paying a record debt in 12 months

Mr. Lasith Malinga playing for the Hawks in a T20 match

Fourth XI winning a flag and singing the club song next to my son

Successful amalgamation with Kingston Saints

Inaugural Hall of Fame evening which inducted 3 very well-deserved recipients - Mr. Brian Hunt, Mr. Greg McLeod and

Mr. Craig Reece

Hosted the Victorian Indigenous Cricket team in playing 2 T20 matches prior to the team heading to Alice Springs for the

National Championships

Getting to meet so many wonderful cricket people who I now call friends

Implementing the transition plan for some time now has meant over the last 18 months Brett has stepped in and commenced

chairing the committee meetings since January as well as attending both President and CV delegate meetings. I am very

comfortable we are set up for success!

Each season the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club has grown its brand and profile and I am extremely proud of not only what we

have achieved in those three years, but what we achieved in the last 9 years. We have a wonderful home, with many volunteers,

financially viable and as important, we have stability both on and off the ground.

Go Hawks!

AUDIT REPORT

AUDITORS REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF THE KINGSTON HAWTHORN CRICKET CLUB

QUALIFIED OPINION

The purpose of the audit is to express an opinion on the financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club, which comprises the

Balance Sheet as at 31 May 2018, the Profit & Loss Statement, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of

significant accounting policies, and the responsible entities declaration.

In our opinion, except for the effect of the matters described in the “Basis of Qualified Opinion” section of our report, the

accompanying financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club gives a true and fair view of the entity’s financial position as at

31 May 2018 and of its financial performance for the year then ended.

BASIS FOR QUALIFIED OPINION

1. Cash takings in the form of player subscriptions, bar sales and canteen sales are a significant source of revenue for Kingston

Hawthorn Cricket Club. The control mechanisms surrounding the receipt, collection and recording of cash prior to entry into its

financial records are insufficient. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding this revenue from this source was limited,

our audit procedures with respect to cash receipts and payments had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial

records. We, therefore are unable to express an opinion on whether the recorded cash income and expenses are complete.

2. All assets in the Balance Sheet are represented at the purchase prices rather their current written down or market values.

Additionally, Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club does not have a current record of the specific machines, memorabilia, furniture and

other assets that are in the club’s possession. Such assets have not been valued nor have they been sighted to confirm their

continued existence.

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further

described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the

registered entity in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES

110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We

have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

OTHER INFORMATION

The Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club are responsible for the other information. The other information comprises the information

included in the registered entity’s annual report for the year ended 31 May 2018 but does not include our auditor’s report. Our

opinion on the financial report does not cover the other information and accordingly we do not express any form of assurance

conclusion thereon.

The scope of the audit does not extend to the other information and, thus, does not consider whether the other information is

materially inconsistent with the financial report or our knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially

misstated. We have nothing to report and express no opinion in this regard.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF RESPONSIBLE ENTITIES FOR THE FINANCIAL REPORT

The responsible entities of the entity are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance

with Australian Accounting Standards and for such internal control as the responsible entities determine is necessary to enable

the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Page 11: Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Clubkingstonhawthorn.vic.cricket.com.au/files/210/files... · Gaurav Kapoor Stuart King Marc La Brooy Shane McQuinn Bruce Wilson I would like to further

In preparing the financial report, entities are responsible for assessing the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing,

as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the responsible entities

either intends to liquidate the registered entity or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so.

The responsible entities are responsible for overseeing the entity’s financial reporting process.

AUDITOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE AUDIT OF THE FINANCIAL REPORT

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material

misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is

a high level of assurance but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards will

always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if,

individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis

of the financial report.

As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain

professional skepticism throughout the audit. We also:

• Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and

perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to

provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for

one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the

override of internal control.

• Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate

in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the registered entity’s

internal control.

• Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related

disclosures made by responsible entities.

• Conclude on the appropriateness of the responsible entity’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on

the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast

significant doubt on the registered entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material

uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial

report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence

obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the registered entity to

cease to continue as a going concern.

• Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and whether

the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.

We communicate with the entity regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit

findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.

COACHES REPORT – JAMES MILLER

As mentioned at the end of season presentation night, it is always difficult digesting a season and all the

components that make up 5 months of playing and countless additional work behind the scenes from

assistant coaches, committee and volunteers.

Having also announced that 2017/18 would be my last at the helm of Kingston Hawthorn there was the

additional reflection of 3 years in the job, which helped me grow as a coach, player and individual.

Unfortunately, juggling duties of playing, coaching, professional development (practitioner and manager), and getting quality time

with my beautiful family had become too great.

I’m proud of many aspects of where the club has progressed but leave knowing there is a long way to go to achieve “success” at

Premier level. The hardest part of my decision to step down was the “unfinished” nature of our clubs building phase, however on

reflection how many coaches can really say they’ve ever done the job 100% and there are no further mountains to climb?

I’m delighted Brad has taken the reigns and I wish him and the club all the best for the 2018/19 season and beyond, rest assured

I will be no stranger to match days, however how much cricket I see with a youthful trio of 2,5 & 7 on board is yet to be seen!

In a reversal of the time-honoured end of season review format I’ll get the thank you’s out early:

Firstly, to Brad – Your help behind the scenes and unanimous support of the coaching methods and philosophies was world class,

you have all the tools within your skill set to become a great coach… You got this!

Phil: From day one an educated and experienced ear I could enlist to discuss anything cricket related and leave the discussion

feeling wiser for the experience – Thank you.

Franky: What are we going to do without Saturday’s Cricket? Thank you so much for all you have done in 2017/18, the prior two

season and the 17 before that. See you on the 1st tee.

The Board: Again, unanimous support for myself and any desire I had, there were some testing times however faith in me and my

ideals was ever constant – thank you all.

Petar: Your service to the club should never be underestimated, there would be no Kingston Hawthorn without your efforts, and

your legacy will remain for many years to come.

Volunteers: If there were no KHCC without Petar, then KHCC would not last long at all without our wonderful volunteers – Special

thanks to Mark & Annette for Thursday and match day meals and operating the most under-rated scoreboard in Premier Cricket!

Lynda: For reasons I probably don’t need to mention!

This season uncovered 6 Debutants to Premier First XI cricket, all with different roads covered to get to the milestone, and with

bright futures moving forward:

Chris Diggle

Harrison Goad

Brad Rossborough

Shivank Vijaykumar

Luke Heath

Justin Kramersh

Ben Slater also tasted International selection with a call up to an ECB XI to play India A, two Hawks for life plying their trade at the

very top level, something we should all aspire to.

My final message to all players from the departing coach:

Success should not be measured as wickets taken and runs made, rather the relationships you form during that

time.

Burn the fire within – push yourself to be better, constantly work at being the very best version of you

Good luck and thanks for the memories!

FIFTH XI

Expectations were high for the 5th XI entering the season, as a rag-tag band of veterans hoped to pool together enough apathetic

firepower to bully their way through Cricket Southern Bayside’s Division 6. Despite coming up short in both the White Ball Final

and the Semi Final, I hope all my teammates found the enjoyment they were looking for from the outset of the season, as this

teams primary goal was to have fun (often and preferably at the expense of your teammates). I would like to thank everybody

who helped me through my first season as captain and look forward to enjoying a more successful season in 2018/2019.

Special thanks are extended to Warwick, who handled the majority of scoring duties throughout the season, and Darren who ably

filled-in when called upon.

Thank-you to the Club Administration and volunteers for their support in keeping the team running as well as making the Club an

enjoyable place to spend time this past summer.

Thank-you to the Premier playing group, who’s matchday support when available was greatly appreciated, particularly for the

White Ball Final on the Galt as well as the Semi Final. Thank-you to Funk for accommodating us at training and not chastising us

for our jovial shenanigans.

Significant milestones and highlights were achieved throughout the season, with notable mentions to the following:

Chris Murphy’s 400th club game

Peter Robinson’s 300th club game

Ash Wood’s 200th club game

Jamie Parton’s 100th club game

Michael O’Shea’s league leading 28 wickets.

Chris Giosis’ league best 7/38 in the Semi Final against Parkdale United.

Jamie Parton’s league best 86 against Murrumbeena.

JUNIOR REPORT:

Numbers of Juniors started low, but players joined throughout the season. The junior format changed this year which was difficult for some of the players on the cusp to come to terms with at first, but I think overall this benefitted the players. Both the U12 and U14 sides had 2 coaches which worked well with work commitments.

The U12B’s were playing in a league too high but this was to enable them to continue to play on Friday nights. Unfortunately, because of this we were unable to secure a win although the team still enjoyed their cricket. The U14’s made finals playing fantastically but unfortunately got knocked out.

We will likely be light on coaches next season for the younger grades I am hoping that we have at least one full Rookie side recruited from our four T20blast sides, but I have already approached Kingston Heath in case we only have a few again.

Kingston Heath ran a fantastic program for the Rookies. They had a one net each session dedicated to individual batting coaching that will benefit the players long term. We still have some U14s that need that kind of attention.

We will need another recruitment drive next season for the girls as 3 of the 6 will not play next year and the others I am not sure about. We only had six players rather than 7 this year. Sean Hawkins will not be coaching next year. So, we really need to investigate how to run this.

Coaches reports below from U12’s and U14’s

Junior Co-ordinator Sue Cater

U12B REPORT

The team started the season a little under-manned (7 players instead of 9), however, we were well supported by siblings (thanks Xavier Martine), a coach’s daughter (thanks Grace McMahon) and a coach’s next-door neighbour (thanks Shaedyn). As the season unfolded though, we ended up with a list of 10 players, 6 of whom were playing cricket for the first time ever!

Although the team remained winless for the season, we were certainly not lacking for enthusiasm, team encouragement and a genuine desire to improve in all facets of the game. Training sessions were a delight to run, and as the season progressed it was rewarding to see individual players progress in their development as well. For example, some players batted to retirement, some hit their first boundary or took their first wicket, and some were involved in spectacular run-outs.

It has been an absolute pleasure to coach the U/12’s and we can only hope they stick around for next season and continue to have fun, enjoy being in a team environment and further their love for cricket.

Chris Reeves & Andrew Hunter

U14B REPORT

Steve McMahon and I agreed to co-coach the u/14s this year and going off last year’s U12s results and the return of some upper age boys we were confident of a good standing. We also had several boys still eligible for U12’s who stepped up and played an age above all year which was a big help. After a bit of a slow start to the year; we won our last game before the Christmas break comfortably and the boys went from strength to strength after the break. After re-enforcing we were still a big chance at finals, the boys knuckled down and won every game, culminating in a do or death last round clash against Bon Beach to see who would take 4th spot and make finals. We bowled magnificently and restricted them to 140, then came out the next week and put them to the sword with Baden, Cory and Kane playing great innings to see us into the semi-final against the undefeated Beaumaris. We batted first and had great contributions all round. The boys were high on self-belief and

the following week we again bowled and fielded magnificently with some cracking catches by Luke, Tommy and Hugo keeping us right in it. It eventually came down to us needing one wicket, Beaumaris needing 4 runs and 7 balls left. Despite the boys’ best efforts, they managed to sneak a boundary and claim victory. It wasn’t the way we wanted to finish the year, but both Steve and I were enormously proud of the way the boys carried themselves throughout the year and it was one we thoroughly enjoyed. A

big congratulation to Kane and Cory on winning the batting and bowling averages, and special mention to Luke who made the SECA U12’s Josh Browne Plate team and was their leading wicket taker for the tournament. A very big thank you to Sue Cater for not only being team manager but taking on the role of junior co-ordinator, she made our coaching job much easier with her assistance. Thanks to Chris and Andrew for taking on the U12s coaching roles and running training sessions for our boys when Steve and I were not available. I hope the boys return for another crack at it next year.

Chris Sullivan

ROOKIES REPORT

The start of the season looked somewhat disappointing until Kingston Heath combined with our 3 rookies to create a team of 7 core players. Kingston Heath took the reins with this in using their ground as home base along with Adam and Zac running the show. Ably supported by Paul Brown as team manager. The boys could train on both Wednesdays with the Hawks and Thursdays with the Heath. The combine worked together well, we tried to have all players train together but couldn’t quite manage that.

By the end of the season we had 9-10 players that played both boys and girls. Skills across the board improved as they all got used to trying to play in full kit, which is a challenge for some to try and run in.!!

Training sessions all went well, and thanks to the junior coaches at Kingston Hawthorn for having the Rookies join in U12/14 training. Those coaches gave good instruction and encouragement throughout the season at training. As did Adam and Zac on game days, the kids really took to those two and made the games, training a lot of fun.

There were roughly 13 games played over the season, with 11 wins and 2 loses. A few of the boys helped out in U12 at Kingston Hawthorn when they were a bit short of players and held their own which was encouraging.

All in all, was quite a success with good support provided.

U13 GIRLS

It was great to get a girl’s side off the ground for the first time. Their first match was in the rain with only 3 players against Dingley the coaches of the other team were very understanding, and they played a training game. The girls were very keen to play but other sporting commitments will prevent a few of them from playing next season.

The girls played one player short all season, they learnt a lot and had fun. They had one win for the season when they played a team with an equal number of players. Sean did an amazing job coaching the girls, but we will need another recruitment drive to get a team up next season. The girls trained on a Monday night and played on Wednesdays.

PETAR IVETIC – PRESIDENT 2009/10 TO 2017/18

Mr Petar Ivetic was elected President of the then Hawthorn-Monash University Cricket Club at the AGM on June 25, 2009 when

the Club was in a perilous state, financially recording an operating loss of $138K and in debt to the tune of $73K. In addition, the

Club was facing sanctions from the governing body Cricket Victoria with fines, loss of points and individual players being suspended

for breaching the Professional Player Rules.

What a challenge for the incumbent President! And who is Petar Ivetic? This could not be better explained than in a Foreword to

the 2010-11 Annual Report written by Club Patron at the time Ian Law with an extract quoted hereunder:

“Twelve months ago, our club, despite its wonderful history, was under threat of extinction. A concerned parent of a young player

sought the truth, then had the courage to preside over the Club, demolish the debt in which it found itself, and restore its pride.

Petar Ivetic is a perceptive, positive, determined and productive President. He was born in England after his family migrated from

Serbia, but until his son played cricket, his chosen sport was soccer. He therefore lacked the generations of cricket knowledge

inherited and enjoyed by most cricket lovers, but I suspect he is catching up fast!

The Club survived the most difficult season in its history, but the modus operandi has been recognised by Cricket Victoria and

that’s a feather in the Club’s cap”

Under Petar Ivetic’s leadership within 12 months the Club returned to a financially stable position recording an operating profit

of $96K with the bank balance ‘back in the black’ at $22K. A magnificent achievement primarily thanks to the initiative of a Debt

Demolition evening when players – past & present, members/life members rallied to the cause, to the extent at the end of the

2010-11 season the Club was debt free with $58,500 initially owed to Cricket Victoria being paid back in full, two years ahead of

schedule.

The Club’s next challenge emerged when Mr Ivetic received a letter from Monash University’s Executive Director Campus

Community Division, Mr Vladimer Pripich on April 4, 2014 stating:

“Monash University is embarking on an ambitious program to increase opportunities to enjoy the benefits of an on-campus living

experience and the University has to rationalise the footprint of both its sporting fields and other spaces in order to accommodate

the residential expansion of as much as 8000 beds over the next 10 years.” At that point Monash University was unable to

guarantee the availability of facilities suitable for Premier Cricket post the end of the 2014-15 Cricket season.

With that the Club needed to find another ‘home’

Again, driven by the President with Committee support, the Club embarked on options, initially agreeing to merge with Premier

Club Dandenong only to later withdraw, considered unsuitable primarily for ongoing identity/historical reasons.

The Club sourced other options and merged with the Sub-District Club Kingston Saints to form the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club

for the 2015-16 season under the Presidency of Mr Ivetic. He has since completed three years at the helm of an administratively

successfully merged Club and one that is respected and competitive on the field. He hands over the reins with the Club in good

shape.

Well played Petar Ivetic – it has been an extraordinary nine-year tenure.

OBITUARIES

The Club offers their condolences to players and members who have suffered bereavements during the past year.

GORDON JONES RAYSON: B: 08.11.1924 D: 01.07.2017

Gordon Rayson, who died in July 2017 aged 92, was a leg spin bowler at Hawthorn-East Melbourne during the early years of the Second World War. That he was a bowler of leg-breaks was not surprising.

Gordon came from a family steeped in cricket history. His grandfather, Charles, played cricket for Malmsbury in the 1880’s and 1890’s, where he was a respected top order batsman. He was also a member of the Malmsbury CC committee and was at one time its Honorary Secretary. In 1896, Charles played for Malmsbury Non-Smokers against Malmsbury Smokers. The Smokers made 67 to which the Non-Smokers replied with 1 for 58 at stumps. The match was drawn. Charles Rayson made 17 not out.

Charles’ son, William, (the father of Gordon) was the brilliant leg-break bowler Bill Rayson, who played briefly for Caulfield and Prahran, during the years of the First World War, before settling at East Melbourne and the later merged Hawthorn-East Melbourne. He became one of the best spin bowlers in Victoria during the 1920’s and represented Victoria on six occasions. Bill Rayson was also the first of an almost unique trilogy. His son Max and grandson Roger, both bowled leg-breaks and both also represented Victoria. It is likely that the Meuleman family comprising, Ken, Robert and Scott are the only other Australian cricket family with father, son and grandson all playing first-class cricket.

Gordon Rayson was seventeen years of age when he first played at H-EM in 1941. His debut season at Glenferrie Oval was played mostly with the Third XI. His performances were sufficient for the club to write in the Annual Report, that Gordon was a “promising

player.” In the following season, 1942-43, he again played mostly with the Third XI or Eastern Suburbs XI as it was then known.

However, his appearances with Hawthorn-East Melbourne were greatly reduced by his enlistment, with the R.A.A.F. His Military Service would see him play little or no further cricket at the Club. The image at right of Gordon in military uniform is provided courtesy of the Rayson family.

After the end of hostilities, in 1945, Gordon resumed cricket with University playing in their Third XI before later playing with Camberwell in the Sub-District, from 1948 to 1952. Here he played 16 First XI matches where his leg breaks, developed over the decade, would bemuse many batsmen and bring him many wickets. His best bowling figures for Camberwell First XI came in the 1950-51 season, when he took 6 for 39 against Port Melbourne, 7 for 130 against Ormond and 5 for 70 against Preston. His batting was

generally confined to the lower order of the Camberwell innings.

Two of Gordon’s brothers were also talented cricketers. Bruce Rayson (1922-1982), played four First XI matches for Collingwood in 1941-42. Bruce later played at Hawthorn-East Melbourne with the Second and Third XI’s from 1945 to 1947. Another brother, Max (1912-1993), played First XI cricket for the VCA Colts, Melbourne, Collingwood and Prahran as well as 3 matches for Victoria in 1937.

JOHN LINDSAY CHAMBERS: B: 14.10.1930 D: 12.09.2017

With the death of John Chambers in September 2017, the Club lost one its greatest batsmen, revered by club-mates and opponents alike.

Chambers – generally known as ‘Cocky’ – was a punishing left-hand batsman of great enterprise. He was not one to allow a bowler to dictate terms of the contest and when set, was not just a fast run-scorer, who batted with confidence and freedom, but a prolific run-scorer.

His youthful ability was so good, that he was selected for Victoria to play against Tasmania on the MCG in January 1950, aged only 19 years. His first innings disappointingly produced only 8 runs. Unperturbed, he took full advantage of his opportunity in the second innings. He led a spirited Victorian run-chase and scored 122 to take Victoria to within six runs of victory, which was duly achieved, shortly after in the final over the match.

It is largely understood that he was given the nick-name of ‘Cocky’ by the opposing St. Kilda leg-spinner, Norm Lynch. Lynch played with St. Kilda 1st XI for twenty years and took 529 wickets. One day at Glenferrie Oval, the confident Chambers clouted a six from Lynch’s bowling which brought forth a retort from the aggressive leg-spinner that he (Chambers) was a “cocky” batsman. These ill-chosen words from Lynch not only gave Chambers a life-long nick-name but aroused the batsman to action. Lynch commented later that he then endured four overs of pain as Chambers treated his bowling with disdain.

John Chambers was born in Geelong in 1930. His father, Jack, was a school teacher in Geelong. In his younger years, Jack was a good footballer and played in the 1925 Geelong premiership team. This instilled in the young John, a life-long passion for Geelong Football Club, who could do no wrong!

John attended Geelong College, where he proved to be a talented sportsman, excelling at cricket, football and tennis. He played for and captained the cricket First XI (scoring over a thousand runs) and was a member of two premiership teams, in 1946 and 1947. He also played First XVIII football from 1946 to 1948.

His natural sporting talent did not go un-noticed. Geelong Football Club invited him to play for their Under 19 team and South Melbourne Cricket club, no less interested, invited Chambers to play with them which he did from 1948 to 1950. He later credited his South Melbourne captain the then Australian captain, Lindsay Hassett, for offering several important tips on batting and protecting his wicket. Chambers’ first representative match was for ‘Country Colts’ against ‘City Colts’, in 1948.

After two years with South Melbourne, a change of residential location qualified him to play for Hawthorn-East Melbourne. His debut for H-EM was in October 1950 at Glenferrie against University where he made six. It wasn’t until February 1951 that he scored his first century for the Club – 113 against North Melbourne. Over the next six years he was recognized as one of Victoria’s most brilliant and consistent batsmen. He was selected for Victoria on 27 occasions and scored three first-class centuries. At Hawthorn he was a member of two premiership teams (1950-51 & 1955-56) and scored over 3,000 runs with six centuries. His highest score of 209* was against Richmond in October 1954. It remains the last First XI double century scored by a Hawthorn batsman in District/Premier cricket.

However, whilst at the height of his cricket career, he shocked many when he chose to ‘retire’ from first-class cricket when, in 1957, he was transferred in his work to regional Victoria. Remuneration at first-class cricket level was poor and with a growing family, he elected to place business ahead of cricket. ‘Cocky’ surely had the talent to represent Australia.

After one-year hiatus from District cricket, Chambers returned to H-EM for the 1958 season and was elected captain. In 1959-60, he showed all the class of his early years and in a brilliant season scored over 700 runs with his last four innings all producing centuries. Sadly, in 1962, he again placed his business career ahead of cricket and departed Hawthorn-East Melbourne.

Surprisingly, in 1965, after four years absence from the game and at an age when most retired, Chambers returned to District First XI cricket a third time. Welcomed back at H-EM he provided plenty of entertainment in two very productive seasons where he scored 1171 runs at 48.66. In 1968, he stood down from the First XI to captain the Sub-District team but was recalled to the District First XI for three matches in early 1969, before finally retiring from First XI cricket.

“Cocky” Chambers was not just an inspirational player for the Club, but also contributed as a committeeman, Hon. Assistant Secretary and gave his time to help coach the Dowling Shield team. A son, Peter, later played with H-EM lower eleven teams.

In 2000, John was elected in the Hawthorn-East Melbourne team of the century. He was also elected a Hon. Life Member and in 2008, elected into the H-EM Hall of Fame.

He was, for several years, Chairman of Selectors for Victoria and a delegate for Waverley CC to the VCA. He was a member of the VCA 200 Club and was awarded Life Membership of Cricket Victoria for his lengthy and outstanding contribution to cricket in Victoria.

At right: John Chambers, Hawthorn-East Melbourne cricketer, in 1955.

At the end of his cricket career, John became a very good golfer and was elected captain of Kingston Golf Club.

John passed away at a private hospital in Blackburn in September 2017. At the time of his passing John had been married to Merilyn for 62 years. “Cocky’s” funeral, in Black Rock, was well attended by cricketers across the generations, including several Test and Interstate players and several former H-EM team-mates.

As his son Peter remarked at the funeral service, ‘Cocky’ always remembered “his beloved Hawthorn-East Melbourne.” In return, a grateful Club could never forget his brilliance.

LEONARD JOHN EDDY: B: 27.11.1928 D: 26.10.2017

In 2015, Len Eddy was elected a Hon. Life Member of Hawthorn-East Melbourne CC. He was, technically, amongst the last such elected. This was in the months before H-EM agreed merger terms with Kingston Saints CC. For over twenty years, Len was a member of the Club. He was, at various stages, a committeeman, practice captain, and chairman of selectors. Len regularly attended matches and was last in attendance at the ground for the opening match of last season, when Kingston Hawthorn lost to Richmond. It was during the match that Len received a sharp knock to his left wrist from a ball, hit for six, which cleared the fence. Stoically, he signalled to all that he was alright before continuing with his cup of tea, drunk with his right-hand.

Earlier in his sporting career, during the 1950’s and 1960’s, Len was a football umpire with the VFL Reserve Grade. This enta iled many week-ends of long travel, depending on where his umpiring appointment took him, which could be almost anywhere within Victoria. It offered, however, the opportunity to visit many small towns, in which to enjoy travel, his umpiring and many comments from parochial home-town locals!

THE HONOURABLE, ALEC JAMES SOUTHWELL QC: B: 01.11.1926 D: 26.01.2018

The Hon. Alec Southwell died on Australia Day, 2018, aged 91.

Possibly he is best known in Victoria for his lengthy legal career in which he later became a highly respected judge who served in the County Court and the Supreme Court.

Alec Southwell was born in 1926. He spent much of his school years at Melbourne Grammar from where he matriculated. He was not only a talented academic student but a talented sportsman who excelled at cricket. In 1943 he represented the Melbourne Grammar First XI.

Leaving school, he enrolled at the University of Melbourne, but his full-time studies were deferred until the duration of the Second World War. In 1944, he took up the fight for the nation and joined the Navy. He served for some time on the H.M.A.S. Penguin and saw service overseas in New Guinea and Morotai.

After his demob from the Navy, in late 1946, he returned to the University of Melbourne to study law. He also resumed his cricket career. From 1946 to 1951 Alec, a right-hand batsman, played 31 First XI matches with University. At University, he was awarded a cricket half blue. His cricket form was acknowledged with selection for Melbourne University in the annual varsity cricket matches against Adelaide University and Sydney University.

In 1951, with his studies completed, Alec continued his cricket career with Hawthorn-East Melbourne in whose district he resided. Perhaps, he was always destined to play cricket at Hawthorn. He was born in Hawthorn and lived in the suburb with his family for many years.

Over the next four seasons, from 1951 to 1955, he played 15 matches for the H-EM First XI. His lack of First XI matches is not a reflection of a batsman showing inconsistent form, but an acknowledgement that at the time the Club was immensely strong, boasting between four to six batsmen who often claimed places in the Victorian team. Altogether, the Club regularly fielded up to nine players with first-class experience.

In his final season with the Club, 1954-55, Alec won the Second XI batting (average 34.18) with a highest score of 101 against St. Kilda. In all, he scored two centuries for the Club, both with the Second XI. His highest score with the H-EM First XI was 66 made

against Fitzroy in the last match of the 1952-53 season. An occasional bowler, he claimed two wickets, with his best effort being 1 for five against Melbourne in 1951.

Alec played tennis with fellow H-EM and Victorian cricketer, Mike Fitchett. The two tennis playing cricketers also united to own and race, horses. In the 1950’s they enjoyed some success and at one time, engaged Tommy Woodcock, the renowned and successful trainer of Phar Lap.

For many years Alec was a very keen golfer and regularly played at Metropolitan and Sorrento golf courses. At one time, he was captain of Sorrento Golf Club. From 1955 Alec concentrated on his business and legal career. In later years, he would be elected to the Melbourne Cricket Club committee where he served for 18 years, the last 9 years, as a Vice President.

Even though Alec left Hawthorn-East Melbourne, the name Southwell would remain associated with the Club in years to come when David Southwell served as a committeeman at H-EM and was a regular attendee of First XI matches into the new millennium.

CONSTANCE MARY BALES COWPER: B: 19.01.1913 D: 03.05.2018

Constance Cowper (nee Webster) passed away in early May in her 106th year. In 1934, Constance married Denis Cowper and the couple eventually settled in Hawthorn. Four years previously, Denis had played for the H-EM First XI in the last four matches of the 1929-30 season. On his debut Denis made 28 runs against Prahran. In his second match, against Melbourne on the M.C G., he made 17 runs and opened the bowling, in what was a brief Melbourne second innings. Denis was a good sportsman who also represented Australia in rugby union.

Constance and Denis later became proud parents to three boys, of whom two, David and Robert, would do as their father had, play First XI cricket with Hawthorn-East Melbourne.

To the family of Constance, the Club extends their sincere condolences. Hers was a long innings well played.

The Club would also like to pay tribute to former Hawthorn-East Melbourne First XI cricketer, Earle William Lancelot Butterfield, whose death, in January 2017, was not noticed by the Club at the time.

EARLE WILLIAM LANCELOT BUTTERFIELD: B: 24.06.1921 D: 14.01.2017

The Hawthorn-East Melbourne cricketer, Earle Butterfield, joined the R.A.A.F in 1942. After completing training in Australia, he travelled to Canada where he undertook further training before being sent to Britain, via the U.S.A. In England he was posted to the R.A.F.’s 189 Squadron. The 189 squadron flew Lancaster heavy bombers and was based at Fulbeck and Bardney in Lincolnshire.

It was from Bardney, on the 25th of April 1945, that Pilot Officer Earle Butterfield took part in the final heavy bombing campaign of the Second World War. Under the direction of Bomber Command their target was Tonsberg in Southern Norway, where a vital oil refinery was still operating under the control of German forces. The air raid by the Lancaster Bombers was successful and helped usher in, within a fortnight, the final defeat of Nazi forces, ending nearly six years of war.

Earle Butterfield was born in Camberwell in 1921. He attended Camberwell Grammar School where, the promising sixteen-year-old played First XVIII football and First XI cricket. After leaving school, he joined Hawthorn-East Melbourne CC in 1938.

Butterfield was a young right-hand top-order batsman of great talent. In his debut season, of 1938, he enjoyed the rare distinction of progressing from the H-EM Sixth XI to the H-EM First XI. Possibly, he is the only cricketer at H-EM to ever achieve this. He commenced with the Colts Eleven – the Sixth XI - in October 1938. His performances impressed selectors sufficiently for his promotion to the Third XI where he promptly scored two centuries. His impressive form saw him promoted – in late January 1939 - directly to the First XI.

His First XI debut, aged seventeen, was at North Melbourne. On his debut at Arden Street, he spent the first day in the field while North Melbourne compiled a daunting 324 for the loss of nine wickets declared. On the second day the H-EM response was poor, and they were bowled out for 171. Butterfield though, impressed everyone. He made 53 to be easily top score. He played the last five matches of the season with the First XI and was runner-up in the batting to the Test cricketer, Ben Barnett. He did have the consolation however, to win the Colts XI batting!

Over the next year, he played a further eight First XI matches, as well as representing the Second XI. His best batting for the First XI occurred in at Essendon in 1939 where he made his highest score of 54. The Argus said his innings was composed of vigorous batting with good cover drives. Butterfield’s First XI career began against North Melbourne and ended against North Melbourne two years later in February 1940, at Glenferrie Oval which, as in his first match, H-EM lost. In his last innings he scored 8 but watched on while Arthur Bradshaw, in his seventh match, scored a century. Earle Butterfield was dropped for the final two matches of the season and never regained his place in the H-EM First XI.

Two years later, Earle Butterfield enlisted for service in the Second World War. He initially trained in Australia with the R.A.A.F. before being attached to the R.A.F. in England in 1944. Here, he underwent further training, flying Lancaster bombers, and took part in some bombing raids over Europe between March and April 1945.

On the 5th of May 1945, he announced his engagement to his Lancashire girlfriend, Hilary Bradley. A month later, the couple married. In October that year, Earle was returned to Australia and he was demobilized in November. Hilary also travelled to Australia and once reunited, the couple would enjoy a long marriage. After the Second World War, Butterfield resumed his cricket career at H-EM but over two years, struggled for form and was unable to regain a place in the First XI. He does not appear to have continued his cricket at H-EM after 1947. His was another cricket career, interrupted and lost to the War. When Earle passed away, in his 96th year, he was the last H-EM First XI cricketer from the 1938-39 team.

Earle was employed in the banking industry for much of his working life. He and Hilary had two daughters and were married for over 71 years, ended only by his passing in January 2017. Nearly a year later, in early January 2018, his beloved Hilary passed away.

JOHN EDWARD ROACH B: 20.03.1940 D: 22.06.2018

The former Treasurer of the Hawthorn-Waverley Cricket Club, John Roach, passed away on Friday 22nd of June 2018, after a lengthy illness. He was 78 years of age.

John was the father of Peter, who became an influential cricketer and captain of the Club. It was through Peter’s involvement with Hawthorn-Waverley, that John eventually took a leading role in the affairs of the Club. When the long serving Treasurer, Hamish Bremner unexpectedly resigned in 1995, John was appointed to the position and maintained a tight control over club finances for the next decade. John also very much enjoyed working behind the bar, where he could spend many an hour talking with players and supporters.

In 2004, John stepped down as Treasurer and during his time at the Club, he successfully kept club finances under control and proudly saw his son, Peter, captain the Club to a premiership in 1999 and play for Victoria.

John was joined in his involvement with Hawthorn-Waverley by his wife, Helen, who took over managing the afternoon lunches and teas for players and visitors. Her devotion to the Club, extrovert nature and warmth of personality, endeared her and her helpers to all visitors to the Club, who appreciated a friendly and well- managed kitchen.

In 2007-08, both John and Helen were honoured for their efforts and were each elected Honorary Life Members.

John is survived by Helen, his wife of 53 years, Peter and their families.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Roach family at this very difficult time.

FROM THE PRESSBOX

.

Brian Hunt hard at work

at Kingston Hawthorn

Cricket Club

(Extract from Leader Newspaper 21 Feb 2018 written by Paul Amy)

IT was a hot afternoon, better spent in shade than sun.

But Brian Hunt had work to do on the new net area at Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club. For the next few hours he toiled away, rolling, cutting, watering, stopping only briefly to put an eye on the match between the Hawks and Melbourne.

Not even Jack Taylor’s helter-skelter century could distract him from the practice wickets. Hunt is closer to 80 than 70 but Hawks people will tell you he’s inexhaustible. He lives not far from the ground, but spends most of his days at Walter Galt Reserve, always busy with jobs big and small.

Kingston Hawthorn knows it has a volunteer of the highest dedication and commitment. When it recently made additions to its hall of fame, the former jumps jockey was a popular inclusion. With the merger of Kingston Saints and Hawthorn Monash University cricket clubs, Kingston Hawthorn charts its history back to 1860 with the formation of East Melbourne Cricket Club.

Its hall-of-famers include the great Victorian and Australian administrator Ray Steele, Test match triple century maker Bob Cowper and Australian captain Tom Horan.

Now comes Brian Hunt, who has had many years of involvement with community sport, helping run the District 10 school sports carnivals and being a trainer for St Patrick’s Mentone, Parkdale Vultures and Dandenong Stingrays football clubs.

After St John’s Vianney Cricket Club formed in 1975 he was named best clubman for the next four years. The award was later named after him. An opening batsman and wicketkeeper, he played 278 games for the club. There were two premierships, two centuries, 16 half-centuries and a string of batting awards when he captained sides in the lower grades. They were known as “Hunty’s Heroes’’.

But his service off the field has been just as unstinting: he’s acted as barman, curator, cleaner and general handyman. When something goes amiss, all eyes turn to Hunt.

In 2014 he received a certificate from Cricket Victoria for 50 years of service to cricket. Induction to the Kingston Hawthorn hall of fame was more recognition. His wife, Pam, and children Steven and Kerryn were on hand when his friend and long-serving committee member Greg McLeod made the presentation.

Paul Amy, Mordialloc Chelsea Leader

January 28, 2018 9:30am

GIVEN the pitch was a little damp and the air was as

sticky as a toffee apple, Melbourne was right to win the

toss and bowl against Kingston Hawthorn.

And two early wickets, one each for young quickie

Wilson McGillivray and veteran Pat Smith, made for a

promising start for the Demons at the Walter Galt

Reserve on Saturday.

But the Hawks’ Englishman, Jack Taylor, played a

blistering innings from No 4 to change the course of

day one of the Round 14 match.

A cracking cover drive for four lifted the right-hander

to a century off only 88 deliveries and for the next 30

minutes he continued to punish the Melbourne

bowling with powerful shots to all parts of the ground.

That got Hawks stalwart Phil O’Meara thinking in terms

of a double-century.

But on 143 Taylor hit Blake Thomson’s spin to Jack

Harper at mid-on, a tame ending to a hurricane of a

hand. The Gloucestershire player could count 15 fours

and 7 sixes in his 118-ball stay as Kingston Hawthorn

reached 295 off 68.1 overs. Melbourne will resume at

1-83, Will Pucovski on 44 and Thomson on 35.

“Happy to have got a century. But a bit frustrating to

give it away like that. It would have been nice to go on

and get a few more,’’ Taylor said a few minutes after

his innings. “I thought we did quite well early to grind

it out. We’re in a position now where we can get 270,

280, a competitive total.’’

Taylor played for the Hawks two seasons ago, as an all-

rounder, but he has been barred from bowling his off-

spin due to concerns over his action. “Makes it even

more crucial to get a few runs,’’ he said of the bowling

ban.

Demons assistant coach and former Test opener Julien

Wiener took in all of Taylor’s innings and called it

“elite’’.

“That was outstanding ball striking against some pretty

challenging bowling,’’ he said. “He hardly made a

mistake for three hours. It was a pretty decent

hundred.’’

Wiener bracketed the knock with Melbourne captain

Matthew Brown’s unbeaten century in last season’s

grand final against Fitzroy-Doncaster.

Taylor and Brad Rossborough (38) added 93 for the

third wicket after the loss of openers Luke Heath (11)

and Ramneet Dhindsa (2). After Rossborough went for

38 Taylor lacked steady company until Hawks coach

James Miller appeared with the score at 6-171. They

pushed it along to 236 before Taylor’s dismissal.

Miller went on to 47, gaining support from No 10

Shivank Vijayakumar (20) to shepherd the hosts to the

shadows of 300.

Victorian Futures League selection McGillivray and

Smith both finished with three wickets, McGillivray’s

costing him 42 runs off 14.1 overs and Smith conceding

49 off 16.

After a downpour of rain last Thursday night fell on the

small covers, the curators did well to present a decent

pitch. It appreciated an hour or two of sun. But you

suspect Taylor could have made runs on a goat track as

he plundered his second century in three rounds.

Paul Amy, Mordialloc Chelsea Leader

March 2, 2018 10:00am

Ryder Medal champion James Miller has called a

close to his decorated career in Victorian Premier

Cricket.

Among the most consistent and durable all-

rounders in the competition in the past two

decades, Miller, 35, will retire after Kingston

Hawthorn’s final match of the season, a two-dayer

against Fitzroy-Doncaster starting tomorrow at

Schramms Reserve.

Miller was contracted to coach the Hawks for

another two years, but club president Petar Ivetic

said family and work demands had forced him to

stand down.

A right-arm medium pacer and right-hand

batsman, Miller made his debut at Frankston-

Peninsula in 1998-99 and played 175 matches for

the Heat.

He transferred to Prahran in 2013-14, putting in a

spectacular first season of 49 wickets and 627 runs

that culminated in a Ryder Medal victory and

team-of-the-year honours.

Kingston Hawthorn appointed him coach in 2015-

16 after an amalgamation of the Hawthorn

Monash University and Kingston Saints clubs.

Miller, like former Victorian paceman Al Wise a

product of St Brigid’s St Louis Cricket Club, goes

into his final match with 259 First XI appearances,

5256 runs, 494 wickets and 103 catches. Four

centuries, 20 half-centuries and 15 five-wicket

hauls are an

indication of his

ability with bat

and ball.

His many

admirers think

he should have

played for

Victoria.

Ivetic said this

morning: “James

made the

announcement (of his retirement) at last evening’s

selection and the applause from players,

committee and members went on for a number of

minutes.

“The pressures on his time balancing work and

family — three children under six years — means

he had no other option but to give cricket away.

“This brings to an end a wonderful playing career

and an outstanding three years of coaching. James

commenced 11 weeks prior to our inaugural

season and took on board the tough challenge.

The output showed that the club has been

extremely competitive in its first three years since

the merger. James has done a tremendous job

over that period and will be sorely missed.

“We look forward to celebrating James’s

achievements over the next few weeks and to say

farewell at our presentation evening on Friday,

March 23.’’

Stonnington Leader

February 12, 2018 2:30pm

Prahran’s hopes of reaching the Premier Cricket finals are in tatters after a thumping outright defeat at the hands of Kingston Hawthorn at Toorak Park over the weekend.

It was the Hawks’ first outright victory in 15 years.

With Javed Khan taking match figures of 8-71 off 26.5 overs, the Hawks completed the demolition before tea on the second day.

“An excellent performance all around,’’ Kingston Hawthorn skipper James Miller said. “It was reward for a lot of hard work…and everything went our way.’’

It was Kingston Hawthorn’s first win since November 26. The Hawks took control against Prahran on what Miller described as an “amazing’’ first day of play on Saturday when 26 wickets fell as the ball hooped around in the humid conditions.

Prahran won the toss and batted and was skittled for 50 as Khan grabbed 5-30, Miller 2-15 and Matt Worsnop 2-4.

The Hawks then passed the target two wickets down with opener Luke Heath (24) and

Brad Rossborough (25) batting well. But from 2-54, the Hawks tumbled to be all out for 115.

Batting a second time, Prahran was 5-15 before limping to stumps at 6-54.

On Sunday, Prahran rallied before being dismissed for 134 – leaving the Hawks 70 runs to get to bank maximum points. Ramneet Dhindsa (26 not out) and Rossborough (34 not out) escorted them to 1-70 in only 11 overs.

Miller was full of praise for Khan’s bowling exploits, saying his seam up, skid and swing caused headaches for Prahran.

“He bowled 13 overs unchanged…he could have taken all 10 wickets the way he bowled, he was world class.’’

T20 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Cricket Victoria together with Melbourne Renegades hosted a T20 Champions League this year between the 6 South- Asian nations in December 2017. KHCC had 4 players represented in the tournament.

Javed Khan (Afghan team), who played in the finals and Shorye Chopra, Ramneet Dhindsa and Ryan Nina (captain) were part of the Indian team that stayed undefeated and emerged eventual winners.

Melbourne Renegades picked a multicultural squad to play Sydney Thunder's multicultural squad in a bilateral 3 match T20 series, which had Javed Khan, Shorye Chopra and Ryan Nina (captain) selected. Melbourne Renegades defeated Sydney Thunder and each of the 3 KHCC players played their part in the winning the series.

Shorye who is a former UAE under 19 representative and was also contracted as a rookie with Melbourne Stars in 2016/17. While it wasn't the best tournament for him, with him hurting his

fingers in the last game, his electrifying fielding and energy on the ground certainly didn't go unnoticed.

Javed has been a consistent performer at grade cricket over the last few years and it was great to see him be a part of the squad. His spells with the new ball and death bowling in the 2nd game certainly helped the Renegades level the series after being 1-0 down. He also had a fantastic performance vs Prahran taking 8 in the game and giving the Hawks it's first outright win in more than a decade. Javed was also part of the Afghan premier league in 2017.

Ryan Ninan was named skipper for the Renegades and it was great to see him lead his team from the front and emerge the highest wicket taker in the tournament too. His game changing double wicket maiden in the 2nd game of the series certainly helped turned things around for the Renegades. He also saw the team through with the bat in the final game.

We are certainly keen to see 3 of them move onto higher honours in the near future and continue to make the club proud.
