FROM THE PRINCIPALLast Friday Kingston Community School competed at interschool sports day at Allendale East. Kingston was successful in winning the overall shield with some fantastic individual performances. One of the many exciting moments was when Mitchell Pinkerton equalled the senior high jump record with a jump of 1.81m. Well done to Mitchell and to all participants who displayed excellent sportsmanship. Thank you to staff and parents for their work and support over the sporting calendar.

This week I have had the privilege of attending training and development on "Results plus-Literacy and Numeracy" with leaders from the Limestone Coast portfolio. As a group of educators we are committed to helping students reach beyond their capacity. Our objective is that powerful learning occurs in all classrooms due to collaboration between students, educators and community. Over the last term KCS teachers have been discussing and planning how we will enact our site improvement plan which is based on three main areas: 1. Building student capacity to create responsible, resilient, powerful, independent learners who are capable of articulating their goals and responding to 21st century needs.2. To engage families as key partners in learner improvement. These strong links to family are imperative so that you support your children on their learning journey and help them to build resilience. 3. To build and continuously improve teacher capacity so that we can support students to become powerful learners.

As educators we are constantly trying to build capacity so that we can cater for all students in their learning. It is important that the way we structure our plan is cohesive so that students and families receive the same message from all staff. These priorities will remain on our agenda for future years but the improvement strategies we focus on will be refined and narrowed over time.

One area to build teacher capacity this year will be to work on giving students formative feedback. Formative feedback is assessment for learning rather than assessment of learning. It is vital that students understand how to improve

their work. As a staff we will undertake a two year course designed by Dylan Wiliam on formative assessment. We will start this course on our pupil free day on the first Monday of Term 2. This was a recommendation of our external review.

I would like to remind parents and caregivers that interviews are being held next Monday and Thursday. Please take this opportunity to come and talk to your children's teachers and if appropriate bring your child with you, so they receive the same feedback to improve their learning. This interview should be about improvement and what next steps need to be taken to ensure this occurs. This is an opportunity for you to partner in your child’s education.

Planning continues for our STEM works. During the last six weeks I have had numerous meetings with the architects and Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure to complete a concept report. This will now form the basis of our redevelopment. Staff have had a planning session with the architects where they were asked for their input on layout and design of spaces. While this is a difficult conceptual process we want the best learning spaces for our students so they can reach beyond their goals. Hopefully families have had the opportunity to see the display created for Presentation night last year and the display on the front office board. I have further drawings and designs and if you would like to look at these please contact the school.

I would like to invite any interested families and community members to a meeting next Tuesday at 3.30pm in the library classroom, to start the development of a concept plan for Nature play spaces within the school.

As this will be a last newsletter before holidays, I take this opportunity to wish everybody a safe and relaxing break. The next few weeks will be very busy for the students and I know they are looking forward to a break from routine. For our year 11 and 12 students while this is a break from regular classes it is not a break from study. It gives the students an opportunity to consolidate their learning to complete assignments and to seek help from teachers.

John and Debbie Waters visited the Year 4 and 5 classrooms to educate our students on the role of Fish Care Volunteers and the importance of fish stock management.

"Fish for the future" was the motto in the Year 4 and 5 classroom. Fishcare volunteers John and Debbie Waters posed the question..."what would our world be like without fish?" Fish contribute to our lives in many ways. Students learnt about the management measures in place to ensure we maintain a healthy population of fish stocks for the future. Bag and boat limits, minimum size, closed seasons and protected marine areas were discussed as were many fisherman tales!

Today two people from Fish Care came into our class to talk about the fishing rules. They talked about when searching for abalone you must take a white ruler and measure them under the water, because if you take them out and they’re not legal size you’re in trouble, as they will die fast out of water. They got fishing rods with magnets on the ends of them and played a game where you had to use the rod to catch fake fish. Once you caught one you’d measure it to see if you could keep it legally. Also another thing about abalone if you see a reef with them on, you must stand on the reef. If the water is over your head you are allowed to go diving but if the water is lower than your head, it means that it is a protected area. Harvey

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS DAY

On Friday the 24th of March, we headed down to Allendale East Area School to take part in the annual Interschool sports day competition again Allendale East, Kangaroo Inn and Lucindale. A great day was had by all of our competitors and we were able to reclaim the overall trophy from Lucindale. A very pleasing result!!

Well done to all students who participated on the day. It was fantastic to see the effort they put into each event as well as a great deal of sportsmanship shown by our competitors, you should all be very proud of yourselves. Well done to all competitors on the day from around the district, as well, it was great to see such fierce competition. A special well done to Mitchell Pinkerton who equalled the Open boys Interschool high jump record with a jump of 1. 81 metres.

Congratulations to all of our age group medal winners and winning age groups, the results from the day can be seen below:

My thanks extend to all staff, parents and students that made the day run smoothly from a Kingston point of view and we extend our congratulations to the Allendale East community for a very well-run event.

YEAR 6/7 CAMP

We enjoyed tubing because we went in groups of 3. When you go around a corner you get air time and you also get splashed with water when you put your feet flat in the water. The thing we mostly enjoyed was when Sarah went really fast. BiancaandErika

On the third day of camp we went to a yabby farm. We learnt about them and how we can tell their gender. We had a task, who could catch the most yabbies with a bamboo stick, string and a piece of carp for bait. CodeeandJeremy

At Illawonga Camp we went caving. We had to wear hard hats and use a torch so that we didn’t crash into the sides of the cave or into Joseph, who was our instructor. He showed us fossils of ancient marine animals that lived in the sea that covered the area, millions of years ago. He told us about the fossils that we found in the cave. There were some challenging parts, we could attempt if we wished, where we had to crawl on our stomachs. We had loads of fun! TeganandAlice

Kayaking was fun, but it was hard paddling into the wind. We paddled over to the wetlands and learned how to get back into our kayaks after we had capsized. We had a lot of laughs! ElissaandKate

In the gym our warm up exercise was to throw foam at our teachers… and then throw in back into the foam pit. We played hide and seek in the foam pit. We used uneven bars, parallel bars, the trampoline, swinging bar, and beam. We give the gym a 9 out of 10! GemmaandBrooke

During week 7 the Year 6 & 7 students spent four days at Illawonga Camp, near the Murray River at Swan Reach. Students participated in many activities that provided opportunities for personal and social learning such as building positive relationships, decision making, engaging in team work and feeling positive about themselves. In addition students were provided with many learning opportunities linked to the Australian Curriculum in English, Science, Geography, Mathematics, History, Business & Economics and PE & Health. Students engaged in discussions about sustainability of the river and the ongoing capacity to provide water for human and animal consumption. They explored wetlands, caves and talked about river ecology. A visit to a yabby and almond farm made links to agriculture, economics and business.

Hi everyone

At playgroup next week, 5th April, we are heading off on a nature walk to collect all sorts of interesting leaves, rocks, pine nuts, flowers and anything else we can find in nature. Collecting these natural loose parts gives children the opportunity to think creatively, wonder why and to problem solve, which are important life skills.

Going for a walk with your children is a great opportunity to explore your natural surroundings, go to the beach, make sandcastles, plant a garden, go for walk

around the town and talk about what you are seeing, hearing and noticing. Maybe you will see different shapes in the clouds, measure yourself or your child up against the height of a road sign or tree, comment on the numbers of blue cars! All of these conversations encourage literacy and numeracy skill development.

When you talk to your children about the world around them, describe what they are doing, so they get used to hearing the words and develop an understanding of the meaning of different words and their purpose. Oral language or talking is at the base of all learning, so talk, sing or read with your children as much as possible!

Playgroup is on between 9.30am - 11.00am each Wednesday. Everyone is welcome. Please telephone the library for further information.
