Writing – The invisible man

Story starter!

Just minutes before, everything had been completely normal. He had sat eating his breakfast at the kitchen table, as he did every day of his life.

It was only when he looked in the mirror that he realised something was wrong. For several seconds he had panicked, and a sick feeling grew in his stomach. His mouth felt dry and he started to sweat as he sprinted from room to room, trying in vain to find a reflection.

How could this have happened? Of all days, why did it have to be today? This was the most important day of his life. He had to find help…

Question time!

*Why is today the most important day of his life? What is supposed to be happening?

*Who is ‘he’?

*What has happened to him?

*When did it happen?

*What caused him to finally realise what happened?

*How will he find help?

*Why is he wearing gloves?

*What will he do next?

Sentence challenge!

Adverbs describe how something is done. They make a sentence better by adding detail to the verb.

For example:

The pen scribbled frantically across the page.

Can you add an adverb to the following sentences to add detail to the verb?

The man dashed from room to room.

He wrote on the paper.

He stared into the mirror.

His heart pumped inside his chest.

Sick sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need your help to get better. Can you help?

The man looked in the mirror. Could it be true. Was he really invisible. He looked back at his reflection but he couldn’t see anything He was scared?

Can you write what will happen next?

Read story starter, consider the questions and write a short story of what happened, why it happened and what happens next.

Challenge

*Can you have a go at writing the content of the letter?

SPAG. Back to basics…

Year 6 Statutory Spellings: Prefixes

Match each prefix to the root word.

Science- Milk Art http://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/milk-art/

Equipment:

· A bowl or plate

· ½ cup of milk

· Washing up liquid

· Cotton bud

· Food Colouring, more than one colour

· Pepper (optional)

Instructions:

1. Pour the milk into the bowl. Be careful not to move the bowl, you want the milk as still as possible.2. Put one drop of each colour in different places in the milk.3. Put just a tiny amount of soap on the end of the cotton bud, then touch it to one of the colours. WOW!4. Let the experimenting begin!5. To clean up, just pour the milk down the drain. (Do not drink it)

How it works:

Milk has fat in it and the food colouring floats on top of the fat. The fat is all connected with bonds. Think of it like the little pieces of fat all holding hands with each other. Dish soaps are used on greasy or oily dishes because it breaks the bonds in fats allowing them to separate. When you add the dish soap to the milk, the fat separates and moves making your magical milk art!

Extra Experiments:

Does the temperature of the milk have any effect?Try whole milk and skim milk.Sprinkle pepper on the milk before you add the soap, what happens to the pepper? Don’t forget to tweet all your wonderful experiments @Year6Kingsley

Now this one is probably best done outside, but you could do it in the house AS LONG AS YOUR PARENTS AGREE!

Using your washing line as a net, why not challenge one of your family members to a game of balloon volley ball. You can keep score if you want, but it’s more fun just to play! It’s also great for you hand eye co-ordination if your parents ask WHY?

Watch the video below to see how the game could be adapted for in doors.
