Kingdown students fought through a tense day of very difficult drone slalom racing,followed by public speaking presentations, to eventually be crowned “Raytheon STEMQuadcopter Challenge, South West Champions 2019”. James Lamont, Silas Hamiltonand Ned Bell now go forward to represent Kingdown in the National Finals to be held atRAF Cosford, on Wednesday 13th November. Congratulations to the rest of ‘TeamKingdown’; all involved were a great credit to the school. Mr Leater.

Plastic-Free FridaysPlastic free Friday is back!We are aiming to produce no plastic waste at all throughout our diningoutlets on a Friday. This means we will not be supplying single-usetakeaway containers. Students can therefore either:

• Eat in the dining hall• Bring their own food container for takeaways

Please support these initiatives by getting organised over the half termbreak, getting yourself a reusable mug for hot drinks and a suitablecontainer for any takeaway meals you may wish to purchase.

Remember: we can all take small steps to combat climate change, butwe all need to take action to make this happen – so please make sureyou do your bit.

Reducing Waste at KingdownAs part of our drive to further reduce waste at Kingdown, we are introducing two new initiatives from the start of Term 2:

‘Bring Your Own Container’ Rewards CardStudents who bring their own container for takeaway foods from the Snack Shack ormain dining hall will receive a stamp onto a reward card.

10 stamps = a free pudding!This is in addition to the 10p reduction in price for students who bring their own foodcontainer (5p reduction on hot drinks for a reusable mug).Reward cards will be given out by tutors in the first week back after half term.

We enjoyed kicking off September with the second year of our new rewards system, ‘Learning Behaviours’. This term, we havecontinued to reward students for a wide range of achievements; in and out of the classroom, during tutor time, in extra-curricularclubs, for contributions to the school and wider communities, for excellent attendance, for showing resilience, and for being helpfuland kind.

As we approach the end of term, we are excited and ready to celebrate the fantastic things our students have been up to.Below is how we’re looking forward to celebrating! Remember, students, parents and carers can track progress of points (as wellas achievement, homework, and attendance) through the Go4Schools app.

The Kingdown Cinema ClubStudents in Year 7, 8 and 9 who managed to achieve only positive points so far this year,have been invited to the Kingdown Cinema Club on Monday 21st October. Year 7 will bewatching Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death on the big screen, with Years 8and 9 enjoying a feature-length film later in the day. Invited students have been given thedetails through tutor time.

Year 8: Beyond the Edge update!We have been blown away by the phenomenal effort of Year 8 students already this year, as they begintheir journey on the Beyond The Edge programme. Mr Richardson and Mrs Hill met with all Year 8students last week and enjoyed reading all of the exciting things students had been up to! From cookingfamily meals, to trying presenting in lessons, to helping others in the community, to trying their bestwith homework: Year 8 are doing a fantastic job, and developing those ‘LORIC’ skills!

All Year 8 students who completed 5 or more challenges this term have been invited to collect a sweettreat on Friday 18th October. Invited students have been given the details through tutor time.

House Points – Congratulations to Wembley House!As the year progresses, we will reward whole houses as well as individual students. Every point a student earns contributestowards their house, as well as their own individual total.

Now we are at the end of our first time, Wembley House have claimed the crown for most house points! Well done to thelions who were given a choice of prizes for the whole house. Wembley tutor groups voted for an extended break time on thelast day of term. Enjoy!
