KING’S HERALD SEPTEMBER 2019
Volume 59, Issue 09
From the Council President King of Kings has always been resilient and creative in times of change. We will meet this new challenge by reinforcing things that bring comfort to us, rethinking areas that may have stalled, and supporting each other as the loving and caring Congregation we have come to know. We will miss our Pastor and we can take comfort in the newsletter articles he has written for us along with the prayers he led us in study this summer. Clearly, calling a new Pastor is our main mission right now. The Council is restarting the Call Committee and we have the full support of the Synod as their top priori-ty. You will be kept informed as soon as information is available. Let a Council member know if you would like to be on the Call Committee. Also, we can and should continue our work toward the future: Your Council has diligently worked with Pastor to make sure our Budget is achievable for the next 5 years. In addition, we have created the 5 Year Strategic Plan to ensure that we are looking forward to growth. Here are the Goals of that Plan. 1. Achieve 100% Congregational commitment to Prayer. 2. Budget aligned to match expenses to giving. 3. Grow the attendance at Worship to 100 per week. 4. Increase use of the campus (TGP, meeting rooms, Worship spaces indoor and out). Detailed action plans for these goals, will be pub-lished on a regular basis. Please take time to prayerfully consider your role in supporting each other and helping us tell the world about Jesus! By Grace, Joan Bockman

BRUNCH BUNCH
Where would you like to go? We are starting the list of restaurants for the new year starting in No-vember. Is there a reason you have not been able to attend? Maybe we can change to make it work for
you! Let Mike Biley know what you'd like to see or put a suggestion in the feedback box in the narthex.
This month, we will be meeting at 9AM for Brunch at the Daily News in Carlsbad on Sep-tember 2nd. It’s a great way to fellowship and catch up with old friends. Each person pays for their own meal. See you there!
COOKIE BAKERS
Join us for a morning of mixing cookie dough. Of course, we also perform quality control on fresh baked cookies! The dough is frozen and then baked when needed for the Koinonia Fellowship Hour on Sundays. It is a fun few hours of con-versation and good deeds. Come to TGP on Sat-urday morning Sept 21 at 10am. Contact Joan Bockman for more info.
OH, NOAH! We will begin musical preparations for our mini mu-sical, Oh, Noah!, with the start of Sunday School on September 15. All children are invited to participate. (If you’re a grown-up who doesn’t sing on our choir, and want to participate, just come to the first 15 minutes of Sunday School starting September 15.) Membership at King of Kings is not required. Our plan is to offer Oh, Noah! at the 10:30 service on Sunday, October 13. (Coincidentally, I understand that this is the birthdate of the US Navy. The selec-tion of the date, however, had nothing to do with this!)
Below is a list of items needed for the musical. If you would like to make a donation or let us borrow any of the items, please let me (Kimberly) know.
Items we’d like to borrow: Stuffed animals (especially if you have any very
tall giraffes)
Children’s umbrellas
Toy hammers
Items we’d like to have donated:
Helium tank/Balloons/ribbon (I found a combo at Walmart: Balloon Time tank, 30 balloons, rib-bon for $23.88)
Sidewalk chalk Snacks and juice for the children following a 30
minute rehearsal on Saturday morning, October 12
Volunteer support needed: A few more stage hands. (This will take about an hour of your time on Satur-day, the 12th.) I’m looking for a few folks who can help draw a few things on the concrete outside the church. (Artistic talent not required-just the ability to have fun playing with chalk!) Also, I’m looking for someone to help out making simple tracings from clip art or even simple freehand drawings of animal faces. Let me know if you can help.

CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY & FELLOWSHIP
Any questions regarding circles you may contact the leaders listed below. Circles meet as follows: Esther Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 1:00 pm Leader: Virginia Cunha - 760-757-5789
Ruth Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 7:00 pm Leader: Sandy Darrow - 760-583-0439
BIBLE STUDY
We begin a new study entitled “No Hard Feelings?”. For the next 3 months, we will study poetry and emo-tions in the Old Testament. September, specifically, will be Stewarding the angst of anger. This study as well as October and November will include poetry from Job, Psalms, Lamentations and Song of Solo-mon.
Just a reminder, if you haven’t already, be sure your subscription to Gather is up to date.
PIECEMAKERS
“Those who sleep under a quilt, sleep under a blanket of love.”
The Quilters are back. We have missed them. I’m sure they can use some help. Lutheran World Relief tells us “….Mission quilts have many uses; a shield against the c old & rain, warm bedding, tents, floor coverings and wraps for babies tied to their mother’s backs”. They convey a strong message of hope “you are not alone”. This special group meets Thursdays in TGP from 9 ‘til 12. If you were at church August 25th, you would have seen a beautiful display of their handiwork draped over the pews.
CALENDER – STANDING DATES
Bookies: Dreams of Joy by Lisa See is the read for September. This is a return to the story of Shanghai Girls. This was a previous club selection which we enjoyed so much we couldn’t resist the sequel. Joy, a strong headed daughter, reels from newfound family secrets, runs away to Shanghai to find her birth father. It is 1957, the Com-munists in charge and much turmoil and danger. Her mother follows her and the plot thickens. Join us Sept. 23rd in the church lounge @ 1:00 to discuss it.
NEW BUSINESS
Don’t forget the WELCA Summer Offering. If you need another envelope, see Barbara Wilmot. It’s never too late to make up for the summer session. Oct 13th is our Thank offering Sunday, celebrated by all the women of the ELC A. So save your change and every time you are thankful for something, put it in the bank to be brought to church on Oct. 13th. I can find something to be thankful for every day. Mark your calendar for November 1-2, the 32nd an-nual Convention & Gathering, at King of Glory, Fountain Valley, CA. Check out the WELCA bulle-tin board for details.
OLD BUSINESS
Sat., August 24th was the combined circles bible study, led by Pastor Tim. We completed the book of Esther. The attendance was good and so was the participation. We developed the idea that we are all Esther’s sometime in our lifetime when we step out of our usual role and put our-selves and our resources to help others. He study was followed by a box lunch prepared by KFC. This was a brilliant idea since it kept us out of the kitchen, the place where Lutheran Women are usually kept. Thank you Pastor Tim for shar-ing your knowledge and time.

“NOTES” FROM THE CHOIR LOFT
During the month of August members of the King of Kings music ministry and also some guests gathered over food, beverages, and a delicious ice cream cake to share some social moments together. Then, in a work-shop style rehearsal, we shared our thoughts about the role that music and music making fill in a worship ser-vice. The conversation that arose was energizing and inspiring. (I had a hard time taking notes fast enough because folks were so excited to share ideas as to why music is important.) So, I thought I would share some of our great conversation with you.
We talked about how music is a vehicle for praise that unites and connects us across various age ranges. In thinking about tunes and texts written hundreds of years ago and tunes and texts written in 2019, we remarked at how music reminds us that our faith tradition has deep and substantial roots that give us an excellent founda-tion for new growth. We noted that music brings joy, offers beauty, and adds a sense of exhilaration to wor-ship.
Comments included the power music has to touch us in ways that are different from but that compliment scrip-ture, prayers, and preaching. Other words that came up in describing music were thrilling, healing, reviving, comforting. Especially important to those gathered was that music gives us the opportunity to praise, to be thankful for the fact that all that we have comes from God. We also talked about how texts set to music were easier to remember.
We then went on to talk about how each of the above is good and worthy all on its own. That’s great news. But wait! There’s more! Ultimately music in worship points us toward being Christ’s hands and feet in the world. Time spent in worship inspires, connects, teaches, com-forts, heals, (the list can easily go on) so that we can take church out into the world. Music compliments and serves that very purpose.
As our conversation was taking place, I could see on everyone’s faces the blessings each found in ministry. We are all called to ministry. It’s a logical response God’s grace. That I could hardly take notes fast enough was inspiring to me. Why do you serve? Why are you excited about it? What brings joy in your ministry? Share this with someone and the blessings multiply.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The church is in much need of lay assistants. Right now there are only 4 volunteers for the 8:00 am ser-vice and 4 for the 10:30 am service, which means those few people are having to do the job A LOT.
This is also the same for ushers, but there are even fewer volun-teers for doing this job.
Please prayerfully consider vol-unteering for one of these posi-tions. These are easy and ful-filling jobs to do for your church.
