Parents’ Guide to Student Success
The Parents’ Guide to Student Success guides were developed to support the Common Core State Standards. Created by teachers, parents, education experts, and other from across the country, the standards provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade to be prepared for college and career. National PTA created the guides for grades K-8 and two for grades 9-12 (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics). In all, 11 guides were created. View the guides online through the links on the electronic newsletter.

Safe Routes to School New Jersey Tip Sheets
WALKING TO SCHOOL SAFELY
Be seen! Wear bright colors or clothing with reflective markers especially when it’s dark.
Always remember the "Three Golden Rules:"
* Walk (Don’t Run)* Stay on the Sidewalk* Walk Sensibly (No Horsing Around)
Stop and look Left-Right-Left behind and front before crossing the street. Keep watching for cars as you cross
A “Walk” sign means its OK to cross but you still must pay attention
A flashing “Don’t Walk” sign means you should not start crossing. If you are already crossing when the flashing starts, continue crossing to the other side; do not turn back.
If there is a crosswalk, use it. If not, cross streets at corners or intersections.
Do not cross the street from between parked cars or run into the street.
When there are no sidewalks, walk facing the traffic
Always be sure to watch for cars that are turning and backing out of driveways or parking spaces.
Have Fun!

DRIVING TO SCHOOLSAFELY
TIPS FOR PARENTSDrive 25mph or less in school zones, keeping aware of children walking or biking.
Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, it’s the law.
Walk your child to school to reduce traffic congestion and improve health.
Teach your child to look all ways (left, right, behind, and front) and then to walk cautiously when crossing a street.
When driving, make sure that all children are properly secured in your vehicle.
Be a role model: always cross with a cross- ing guard at designated crosswalks.
Make sure you follow your school’s traffic pattern for drop-off and pick-up.
If you do drive to school, to help reduce traf- fic around the school try parking a block or two away from the school and walk your child the rest of the way.
Idling for more than 3 minutes is harmful to health and the environment and is against New Jersey law.
Slow down.Drive safely, and walk with your
child to school as often as possible!
