Hello and welcome to East Narrogin Primary School for Term 3 2015. My name is Nolan O’Rourke and I am the new Principal for the remainder of this year. Moving to a new town is sometimes overwhelming but the transition to Narrogin has been easy. The people I have dealt with so far have been extremely helpful, considerate and professional. I feel like there is a very strong sense of community and look forward to my time here in this wonderful town. I have been very impressed with the students at East Narrogin Primary School. They are very courteous, well- mannered and have an obvious sense of pride in the school. As I mentioned to the staff at our pupil free day last week, the overall student academic results are good. There is always room for improvement but I believe there is very good teaching and learning occurring at East Narrogin Primary School and we will strive to improve as all good schools must. I would also like to congratulate the calibre and professionalism of the school staff. The East Narrogin Primary School community should be very proud of these dedicated and committed staff members. I am very lucky to be working at a school with so many outstanding colleagues and look forward to working with them very closely. Semester Two will be a very busy time. We have many events such as sporting carnivals, camps, discos, incursions, etc. as well as day to day teaching and learning opportunities. We also have our Independent Public School review happening at the end of Term 3 as well as the creation of our School Business Plan that will guide the school for the next few years. I look forward to meeting and working with you and your families. The education of a child is a two-way street between family and school and one must be reliant on the other for a child to achieve their best results. We will need to work together to bring out the best in your child and I look forward to seeing your children flourish and thrive here at East Narrogin Primary School. Lion King Performance in 2016 Our school has the exciting opportunity for 18 of our students to travel to Perth and see the Lion King Musical at the Crown Theatre on Wednesday 24 February 2016. Student tickets are $65 and the cost of the bus will be at least $20. As numbers are limited we would like to offer this opportunity from the 2015 Year groups of PP, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 to complete an expression of interest form and return to school with a $10 deposit. The student name will then go into a raffle and 18 names (as well as two reserves) will be selected to attend this wonderful event. The expression of interest form will be sent

home with your child in Week 3. The raffle will be drawn Monday 24 August during Book Week, in Week 6. Payment for this excursion by the selected students will then be expected by the end of Term 3.

The Secret to Helping Your Child do Well at School Teachers in several classes have expressed concern for the growing number of students who are not regularly completing their home reading or homework. A large part of our school’s literacy success has been due to the way in which our parents and families have supported and followed up with the work done in class through support of the home reading program.

NAIDOC Assembly Next Wednesday 5 August at 9.50am students in years 1-6 will be attending the NAIDOC assembly at the Narrogin Senior High School. We are looking forward to Room 7 presenting their welcome song “Wanjoo” for this special event.

Visitors to the School Please be reminded that if you wish to see your child during school hours then it is preferable you sign in at the front office first and ask the office staff to collect your child from their class. Please drop off lunches at the front office. Joanna Hayes & Johan Van Wyk Deputy Principals

Getting a good night’s sleep!

Bed time can be a difficult time for some, especially in younger children. But a good night’s sleep can mean the child is settled, happy and ready for the school day.

The recommendations for school children are between 10 and 11 hours of sleep each night. A child should be tired after a day at school but it is very important to establish a bedtime routine. A bedtime routine in your house could be: 6.30pm: Put on pyjamas, brush teeth and go to

toilet. 7.00pm: Reading a story or having quiet time.

The use of technology before bed time is not recommended.

7.15pm-7.30pm: Goodnight and lights out.

If your child is still having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, you could try some of the following tips: Avoid nap times for older children over the age of

5 Encourage children to go to bed and wake up at

similar times to establish a habit Help children to relax before bed time which

could include a bath or reading a story Make sure you child feels safe at night using a

night light and avoiding scary movies or stories Provide a dark, quiet and private space for your

child to sleep

For more information on how to get your children to sleep better visit the Raising Children’s Network website: http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/good_sleep_habits_tips.html/context/618

Alternatively, you can speak to your School Health Nurse.

“On Thursday 25 June the Year 5 and 6 classes got up super early, ready to board a bus to Perth for an excursion. Mrs Dyson, Mrs Jones and Mr Dehnel had organized for us to visit the Art Gallery and to meet Matt Ottley, Danny Parker and some great musicians from WASO (The West Australian Symphony Orchestra). Mr Van Wyk was our bus driver for the day and Mrs Holt came along to help us all out too. We went on one of Nicholls Coaches and it was very comfortable”. - Dylan and Taylah.

“Matt Ottley made all of the magnificent music for the book! He also asked Logan to come up and scribble on the board and then he turned Logan’s scribble into a monkey and then the musicians played music using that illustration. It was amazing!” - Dwayne and Dylan “I loved the shell in the art gallery that made cool noises”. - William

“The music went so well with the art for Parachute”. - Mia “Learning about the history of art was really cool”. - Rhys “I liked all the artifacts on display in the Art Gallery”.- Paige

Uniforms We have a full range of uniforms available at the canteen. We are open between 8.30am and 1.30pm, though lunch orders will take priority. Ros, Jo, Lorraine — Canteen Managers

National Consistent Collection of Data for School Student with Disability

As part of the annual school Census on August 1, all public schools are required to enter information about students with disability and/or learning difficulties, including medical conditions. All government and non-government schools across Australia will be participating in collecting the national data. Schools have been asked to provide data about the number and learning needs of children at the school. The name of the school and the name of the student will not be reported. Information about the different types of needs and the programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected. Parents of students who will be part of the database have been individually contacted by letter before the end of last term. If you do not wish your child to be included in this data collection please contact the school by 30 July 2015. This information will help Governments and the Department of Education develop better policies that acknowledge the level of resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in WA schools. If you would like to learn more about the National Consistent Collection of Data for School Students with Disability you can visit the website www.deewr.gov.au/students-disability or contact Adriana Palermo.. P&C JUNIOR DISCO – THURSDAY 20 AUGUST YEARS K to Yr 2 5.00PM TO 6.30PM

Procedures for drop off & pick up of students at discos. These procedures are to ensure that the P&C provide appropriate duty of care to all students who attend. Tickets to be pre-purchased at school in the week prior to the event ($7.00 for each child - this includes disco entry and 1 sausage sizzle). Juice boxes, LOL’s, lollies, chips etc will be available to purchase on the night so please send a few dollars with your child if you are happy for them to buy a snack. Parent/Carer (or responsible adult) MUST drop off their child at the undercover area and have them signed in as participating. Parent/Carer (or responsible adult) MUST collect their child from the undercover area at the end of the disco.

Therefore children CAN NOT walk to or from the disco unaccompanied by a responsible adult. They also CAN NOT be dropped off in the car park and left to walk into the undercover area on their own. As previously mentioned, these changes are to make sure duty of care is passed directly from the Parent/Carer to the P&C. If students arrive unaccompanied by a responsible adult they WILL NOT be able to participate in the disco. We trust all families will support our efforts to ensure the safety of all our students. The ticket for the JUNIOR disco is on this slip. If your child is going to participate in the disco please complete the details on the ticket and return to canteen (with payment) by Wednesday 25 March 2015. P&C JUNIOR Disco Ticket
