He was one of the most valued employees in Bergen County, conscientious, dedicated, sincere.

But the mayor of Fair Lawn, former Assemblyman Richard Vander Pleat, had annoyed Mr. Jones. So out went Mr. Ry»s job.

It waa an open, insolent, intolerable example of political ruthless ness.

Ik e incident damaged the Republican good government image. It demonstrated that the county payroll was being used aa Mr. Jones’s private poaching preserve. It caused the en tire county to react with horror. And in Fair Lawn it spelled the doom of any ticket led by Mr. Jone*.

Now Freeholder Daly, who participated in the Rys axing, asks for unity. He says tke good Republicans should work to together.

Let Freeholder Daly go to Fair Lawn and explain there why the Republicans should continue to have faith in Mr. Jones and the brand of Republicanism he represent*.

There are some aged who are in need ol guidance. Those should be helped.

But how about the robust, alert, energetic and intellectually curious retired folk who don’t like the idea ol being sent out to pasture?

We a re squandering one of the most valuable resources we have—experience. And it ia doubly distressing to hear Mrs. Harder act as though she were running a charity program.

Eaat Rutherford, torn by b itter faction- alism, makes a habit of turning down the school budget. I t did so once this year. Then, when a new high school was proposed, th e same forces th a t lought the budget ganged up on the school proposal and defeated i t

Tke argum ents were acrimonious. Seldom did they reach the elevated stage w here the interests of the children rather than of the politicians w ere uppermost.

Some of those who licked tke school proposal, including Samson Ferraro, the Lyndhurst High School teacher who doubles as a member of the E ast Rutherford Board of Education, now proposes a regional school.

Good luck to them. But does anybody in his right mind think

th a t a Board ol Education which has shown itself so irresponsible would be tHisted in a regional combination?

Caristadt, which has suffered insult and

outrage a t the hands of the East Rutherford demolition squads, could tell the other municipalities which are being coaxed to talk regional school what it means te try to work East Rutherford.

There are many who believe that failure of voter* to tu rn out for school election are influenced no t so much by apathy and indifference as by the feeling that there is nothing to be gained.

Elected by a small percentage of the people, Boards of Education aD too often tend to become irresponsive and irresponsible. In East Rutherford the efforts of the educators to keep their schools on an even line while the Board of Education is shaken by political convulsions is tragic.

One m ust have great faith in the democratic system to believe that one day the good people of E ast Rutherford are going to rise up in th e ir wrath and toss out the politicians who have a grip on the school, system.

Form er Governor Robert B. Meyner, who is advertising cxar of the cigarette industry, m ight take a look a t television.

There is a code in television which bans th e actual drinking of alcoholic beverages in the advertising.

’.r Me; yner might consider a similar ban on smoking. Not only in advertising but on programs.

The sight of the Jackie Gleasons, Frank Sinatras and others whose TV success depend upon the amount of advertising their stations can pick up smoking cigarette a fte r cigarette is not accidental. They are deliberately paying homage to the cigare tte industry. It is well known tha t every- time Gleason or Sinatra lights up thousands of hands belonging to the boobs who may be watching Gleason and Sinatra are reaching for theirs.

The efforts of the American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association and others to warn that cigarette smoking is dangerous are laughable in the

ilight o f the daily pounding youngsters get on the joys of smoking from television.

Tke other Saturday night a bearded clown on Channel S, who makes a practice of try ing to insult guests, was asked why he smokes so" continually.

“W hy 1 always use the product of my sponsor," said the man.

Said in jest, perhaps, the rem ark is typical of television morality.

The sight o f grown men and women puffing away as though their very lives depended on th e next lungfull of smoke is hardly elevating. Smoking is a filthy habit. Frobabiy if we could poke under the layers of advertising mythology we would find th a t smoking today is more harm ful more costly than the narcotics addiction that has so many in a dither today.

The way to a ttack the smoking menace is through advertising and codes of action. How about it, Mr. M eyner?

The only merchandise which we *ell other than electronics are alr-oondltioners. We use these as a ''fill in" during our slow summer season. Alr-con- ditioners are strictly a seasonal item and complement our conditions ideally

It always amazes us when customers come to our store wanting to select “ an air- conditioner” . It never would’ occur to them to go to a store! and buy "a radiator". For this they would call somebody who knows all a b o u t heating. When it comes to cooling respectively air-conditioning, a lot of people be- come experts, although they really do not know the least thing about It. One has to realize that much of this confusion is caused by the statements of the manufacturers, which describe a unit, for stance, as “ good for square feet. Invariably, there asterisk (•) and in readable print on the of the ad it says (*) favorable conditions,” , less to say that able conditions’ va il.

There are a great many factors to be taken in con

sideration as far as the pro

per selection is concerned. The

construction of the house,

whether it is insulated, up

stairs or downstairs and ex

posure are only a fe\)v of the

things that have to be evaluated.

Only somebody who has the

training and experience can do this right.

Most people think only in

terms of cooling as lar as an

air -conditioner is concerned.

As the word clearly states, it

does much more than cool, it

really "conditions” , An im por

The Essex County Chapter of thr New Jersey Aaaoclation for Nursery Education announces that Its laat executive board meeting for this season w ill be held on Monday. April M. at CJQ pan. It will be a supper meeting nt W»e home of the president, Mrs. Herman J . Harris in Arlington. ,

Old memories were revived laat week when a J foot-long a rtillery shell manufactured tn thr old Canadian Car A Foundry Co. plant in the yndhurot meadows, was found tn the wall of the attte of a hdtse at 301 Union Avenue. Clifton.

Whether th e shell was blown Into the house from the Lyndhurst explosion or placed there during the yean te not known.

For years Lym Raint a n rf nearby residents in Ruther lord and North Arlington found such shells in I heir homes or In the grounds wher* they had become imbedded

The big plant blew up on January t l , 1*17. before the United State* entered th* w ar. The Canadian Car A Foundry organised the plant to supply the Russians w i t h artillery shells.

Hundreds ot area residents m trtw l in its- | rtsnr— T h i jgw a- der that was placed In the shells always was a danger.

In the afternoon of January 11 fire began in one of the worth •.heds How the fire began was at first a mystery.

The German government, from which reparations w e r e dfmanttal. . instated rarrlnaa- ness on the part of workers In the plant caused the exploaton.

However. Allied Investigator* worked on the case for yeara.

Eventually they uncovered the fact that the Germans had produced perjured testimony to back up their claim .

It was found out that a Ger- n nn spy had started the fire with a pencil-bomb. It waa a small object that had been used by the Germane in other arson*.

In the post-war years during the controversy over the explosion a Mixed Claim * Commission was organized by the United States and Germany.

Under investigation was t h e Black Tom explosion in Hoboken and that in Lyndhurst.

In 1939 the Mixed Claims Commission found Germany guilty of plotting the explosion and awarded $5,000,000 damages to this country.

Whether the shell found In Clifton had live explosives is not known. Handling the shell gingerly. Clifton police contacted Ft. Monmouth- A squad look it to Ft. Monmouth.

Many Lyndhurst men with long memories w ill laugh over that one. As youth* they handled the shells fearlessly. Many Lyndhurst youths made pin money by chopping the copper bands off the shell* and selling them.

There were no casualties
