Spot the Dog

Spot the dog was tired. He wanted to find a place to take a nap. First, he laid on

the couch. It was too noisy in that room. He got up to look for a new place to take

a nap. Next, he tried the kitchen floor. That was too hard and cold. So, he got up

Frogs

Frogs live on land and in water. Frogs have long back legs and short bodies. Their

eyes stick out. They do not have tails. Frogs must move fast to catch something to

eat. They must also get away from bigger animals. Frogs have smooth, not bumpy,

skin. They can breathe through their skin. Their skin must stay wet so they can

breathe through it. Frogs can jump from tree to tree. They can’t fly, but they can

stay in the air for a long jump.

The Desert

Where is the hottest place on Earth? Is it in Africa? Is it in Asia? The hottest

temperature was recorded in the desert. That desert is in California! It is the

Mojave Desert.

Desert Climate

Deserts are very dry. They get less than 10 inches of rain a year. They are also

very hot. But at night the desert can be cool.

The seasons are different in the desert. Summer is hot. Fall is warm. Winter

may be cold and bring rain. Then flowers may grow in spring.

Desert Plants

Desert plants have to survive in the dry heat. They need to live with not much

water. A cactus is one desert plant. It stores water. It does not have leaves. It has

needles. Leaves lose water. Needles hold water.

Desert Animals

Animals learn to live in the heat. Lizards and snakes stay under rocks to keep

cool. A pack rat builds a den with sticks. It stays in the shade. Many animals go

out at night. That is when owls hunt.

Death Valley

Death Valley is in the Mojave Desert. A valley is the low space between

mountains. Mountains trap the hot air. Death Valley is very low. It gets very hot.

But the mountains may have snow on top.

How Newspapers Are Made

People love reading news stories and looking at photographs, or pictures that go

with them. So how is a newspaper made each day?

Finding News to Report

In order to print news, people have to find it first. Reporters go out on their

beat and look for stories. They go to sports events and town meetings. If there is

an accident, they rush to it. Reporters talk to people and ask them questions. The

watch everything. They record important facts and take photographs. Then they

think of a story they can tell and write it.

Putting the News Together

Next, the reporters bring their stories to an editor. Editors decide what stories

to print. They choose the photographs. They plan the newspaper.

Then the editors take the typed stories and lay them out on different pages.

They have to make sure the words fit on the page. Editors look for errors in the

writing. Then they make a “dummy”. They dummy shows what the newspaper

page will look like. Editors check again for errors. All this is done on computers.

At the Printer

The printer receives the pages from the computer and begins printing. A huge

roll of paper moves, and ink is pressed onto the pages. Machines move the rolls.

More and more pages are printed. After the pages have printed, a machine cuts

and folds the paper.

Getting News to You

From there, trucks deliver the papers all over the city. Some go to stores that

sell them. Newspapers may even come right to your home!

Jenny’s Move

Sarah was mad. Her best friend Jenny was moving. She knew she

would never see her again. Jenny had promised to write, but she

knew how that went. Last year Mary had moved, and she wrote three

letters. But she never heard back from her. She must have made

new friends. Sarah knew the same thing would happen with Jenny.

So she was getting back at her. She wasn’t going to speak to her at

school. That would show her.

On Monday, Jenny asked Sarah if she wanted to play jump rope at

recess. Sarah said she couldn’t because she had to play with Magda, a

On Wednesday Jenny asked if Sarah wanted to sit next to her at the

school play. Sarah said no. Jenny sat by herself and looked sad.

Thursday was Sarah’s birthday. Her mom hadn’t had time to get her

the special outfit she wanted. Her dad had to leave early for a

meeting. It seemed like no-one cared it was her birthday.

But when Sarah got to school, Jenny was sitting outside with a box wrapped

in the prettiest silver paper with a big bow. Jenny gave Sarah the

present and Sarah opened it silently, thinking about how mean she

had been. It was a stationary set, shiny pen, and a book of stamps.

Sarah realized that even though Jenny was moving they would keep in

touch and be friends forever.

Explore Our Solar System

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune!

Eight planets orbit, or revolve around, the sun. The planets and the sun are

parts of our solar

system.

The sun is a star. It is a giant ball of hot gas. Mercury is the closest planet

to the sun. It has mountains, cliffs, and plains. Venus is the hottest planet. It can

reach up to 850 degrees. That is hot enough to melt a rocketship! Earth is the

planet pictured on the cover. It is our home. It is the only planet that has the

oxygen and water that people, animals, and plants need to live.

Mars is a cold planet. It is sometimes called the Red Planet because it has

reddish soil.

Jupiter is the largest planet. It is made of thick gases. If you tried to land a rocket

ship, you would sink into the planet! Saturn is the second-largest planet. Like

Jupiter, it is made mostly of gases. Its rings are made up of rock, ice, and dust.

Uranus is cold and windy. It was the first planet to be discovered with a telescope,

in 1781. Neptune is called the Blue Planet. It is the coldest planet because it is

farthest from the sun.

Ring Around the Planets

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are gas planets. They all have rings.

Only Saturn’s rings are thick enough to be seen easily from Earth.
