FOR THE LEADER

Kind JesusMark 5:21-43

These two stories carry with them a common theme—Jesus has power over sickness. The two miracles Mark recorded here help us see Jesus’ power. Jesus’ miracles affected two females, one likely an outcast because of her ritual uncleanness, and the other a child. Both would have been considered not worthy of Jesus’ attention, but Jesus showed He had come to help everyone, not just a select group. Isn’t that wonderful?

Jairus is identified as a synagogue leader. This designation likely meant he was the one responsible for conducting the worship service and preaching. Jesus’ dealings with other religious leaders were strikingly different from His interaction with Jairus. Jairus believed that Jesus could heal his daughter who was dying. Jesus followed Jairus toward his home.

At this point Mark inserts another story of miraculous healing. Some scholars question if these stories happened concurrently or if Mark may have woven them together since the stories are so similar and share the same important goal of demonstrating who Jesus is. A woman had suffered bleeding that could not be stopped by anyone, including the many doctors she had seen and to whom she had given all her money. As Jesus passed by, the woman believed just touching a part of Jesus’ garment would heal her. When she did touch the garment, she was healed. Immediately Jesus knew something had happened and He praised the woman for her faith.

Returning to His previous mission, Jesus was met by others from Jairus’ house who pronounced that Jairus’ daughter had died. The other men encouraged Jairus to leave Jesus alone so Jesus could go about other business He might have. Jesus ignored their statement and told Jairus that he needed only to believe.

When Jesus arrived at Jairus’ house, He took the child by the hand and restored her to life and health. Both miracles Jesus performed help us know that Jesus is all-powerful. He rules over sickness.

BIBLE VERSEMark 5:36

CHRIST IN CONTEXTThe Book of Mark emphasizes the miraculous deeds of Jesus, the perfect Son of God.

BIBLE SKILLS • Hear that the Bible tells about God and Jesus.• Touch, hold, and turn the pages of the Bible.

OFF TO A GREAT START!▸▸ First impressions are important. Help each child and family feel special and welcomed at church.

▸▸ Greet each child individually and personally.

▸▸ Briefly mention to families and their preschooler an activity you have ready for children to enjoy at church.

EXPLORE THE BIBLE TEXT CONNECTION

• Jesus is all-powerful. The stories of Jesus healing a woman and a girl show that Jesus has power over sickness. Even in the face of death, Jesus can heal.

• Jairus was a synagogue leader. He was likely responsible for preaching and teaching and administering the daily work of the church. Jairus believed that Jesus could heal his daughter.

• The woman on the road where Jesus walked also believed that Jesus could heal her. The woman’s story is different in that she was convinced that Jesus’ power was so great she only needed to touch a part of His clothing. Her faith was rewarded and she was healed.

• Sin brings brokenness and imperfection. God uses imperfect people to advance His plans. Genesis 29 tells of Jacob, who previously had tricked his father, and now was tricked by his uncle, Laban. Despite Laban’s treatment of him, Jacob remained faithful to God and thankful for God’s promise.

BIBLE STORY NUGGETS• Jesus cared about people.• Jesus helped a woman who was sick.• Jesus helped a girl.

BABIES EXPLORE THE BIBLEBabies are sensory learners, and they are relational. They learn best when teachers engage them through conversation and play. Prepare two or three activities for babies to enjoy as they explore the Bible.

TOUCH & PULLTools: Bible, large texture board (see Leader Tip), 2 or 3 ribbon lids (see Leader Tip), Bible Bookmarks (Pack)

• Place the fabric board and ribbon lids on a play mat. Insert a Bible Bookmark in the Bible at Mark 5.

• Show a baby how to pull a ribbon length to make it slide back and forth from knot to knot. Talk about textures of the ribbon.

• Invite another baby to touch the fabrics on the fabric board. Mention colors and designs. Comment that fabric is used to make clothes.

• Say: “A sick woman touched Jesus’ coat. Jesus helped the woman get well.”

NEXT HOUR (MORE EXPLORATIONS FOR BABIES)

• Continue and repeat activities from the first hour. Babies

learn through repetition and practice.

• As you cuddle, rock, soothe, and tend to babies’ needs, talk

about the Bible. Say Bible words and phrases.

• Use the Bible with babies. Let them see, touch, and turn

Bible pages.

• Guide babies to take the beads out of the basket and drop them back in the basket. Encourage babies to explore the beads freely.

• Pick up the Bible. Say: “Bible. The Bible tells about Jesus. We learn that Jesus made sick people well. Jesus helped a woman and a girl get well.”

• Guide an older baby to turn pages in the Bible. Look for pictures of Jesus in the Bible (if available).

CRAWL THROUGH A TUNNELTools: Bible, large box, tape, Jesus Matching Cards (Pack), Story Picture: A Woman and Girl Get Well (Pack)

• Open both ends of the large box and lay it on its side to make a tunnel. Tape the Matching Cards (Pack) on the walls inside the tunnel. Tape the Story Picture to the outside wall of the tunnel. Lay the Bible at one end.

• Encourage a baby to crawl through the tunnel. Point to a picture on the wall and say Jesus’ name. Say: “Jesus was a baby (adult). We learn about Jesus from the Bible.”

• Point out the Story Picture. Say: “Jesus helped sick people get well. He helped a woman. He helped a girl.”

• Guide a baby’s hand to open the Bible to today’s Bible verse. Say: “Jesus told the people, ‘Believe Me.’ Jesus helped the girl get well.”

LEADER TIP!Do not let babies put the cardboard rings in their mouths.

Tools: Bible, toy medical kit, 2 plastic dolls, baby blankets

• Invite toddlers to pretend to be doctors and nurses. They can care for

the dolls or teachers. As children play, ask them about visits to the

doctors could not help the people. But Jesus made sick people well.

One time Jesus helped a sick woman, and He helped a sick girl.”

• Help a child open the Bible to Mark 5. Find Mark’s name. Say: “This is

the Book of Mark. Mark knew Jesus and wrote about the things Jesus

did.”

A WOMAN AND GIRL GET WELLMark 5:21-43

One day a church leader ran to Jesus. He said, “Jesus, Jesus. My little girl is very, very sick. Please come to my house and make her well.”

Jesus started to go to the man’s house. People followed Jesus to see what He would do.

Then a sick woman came near Jesus and touched His robe. She said, “If I can just touch Jesus’ robe, I will be well.”

And that is what happened. Jesus told the woman, “You are well because you believed I could heal you.”

People from Jairus’ house shouted, “It’s too late! Jairus’ daughter died.”

Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid. Believe.”

Jesus walked to the house and went to the girl’s room. He held the girl’s hand and said, “Little girl, get up.”

Right away the girl got up and began to walk. Jesus had made her well!

EXPLORATION STATIONSToddlers are on the go and ready to learn. They learn best through playful exploration and discovery. Offer three or more multisensory activities to lead young preschoolers to discover and learn Bible truths.
