"I give you a new commandment: love one another." With these words, Jesus sums up the law and the prophets in one concise phrase. Love one another. Af- ter 2,000 years, you'd think we'd have it figured out by now! But all too often we fail in this commandment. Per- haps we mistake "love" for mere "common decency." Perhaps we've been betrayed, or our own visions of love have been tarnished or misrepresented in our lives. Blessedly, Jesus doesn't leave us without a guide. As I have loved you, so you also should love one anoth- er." Jesus himself modelled what this love should look like. So what are some of the characteristics of the love of Christ? Humility, for one. St. Paul writes that Jesus "emptied Himself." In becoming man, Jesus puts aside the full splendour of the Godhead. Not only does he be- come human, but he takes on many of the mundane privations of human life. He spent most of his life in rela- tive poverty - especially by our standards - as a com- mon labourer. When he began gaining popularity as a preacher, he still travelled on foot and spent nights in other people's homes or outdoors. Jesus' love is generous. He was always available to the crowds and to being interrupted by people in need. He invested time in his disciples and patiently taught them about the kingdom of God. The love of Jesus is also courageous. He encountered many people deemed less worthy of human respect, due to being public sinners or having a physical or mental disability. Jesus was brave in breaking these social boundaries to show care and concern to the outcast. These traits are possible for us to imitate! Indeed, we are hardly identifiable as Chris- tians without them. "This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." MINISTRY SUNDAY 18TH /19TH MAY Within any Parish community, there are always people with gifts, which can put fresh heart into others. Nothing builds up a Parish community more than for people with such gifts and talents to be called upon to help and for them to respond generously and gladly to this call. There are many such people in our parishes, gifted by the Spirit for the service of the Lord in the community of believers, and many are willingly to serve. However, such volunteers will always need training and support. MINISTRY SUNDAY

18TH /19TH MAY

Within any Parish community, there are always people with gifts, which can put fresh heart into others. Nothing builds up a Parish community more than for people with such gifts and talents to be called upon to help and for

them to respond generously and gladly to this call. There are many such people in our parishes, gifted by

the Spirit for the service of the Lord in the community of believers, and many are willingly to serve. However,

such volunteers will always need training and support. As a result, we need paid professional women and men working on a regional level in this diocese to accompa-

ny and resource these volunteers and to build up our parishes to enable them to pass on the faith for the

generations to come.

PREPARATION FOR BAPTISM: The purpose of the preparation programme is to support parents in re-flecting on the significant step they are taking in bring their child to be baptised into the Christian Community. Next preparation meeting will take place in Kilian House family Centre, beside Holy Rosary Church, Greystones Wednesday 29th May at 8 p.m. The programme in-cludes the Welcoming Ceremony. This is a way of bring-ing the celebration of baptism into the community. Within it we will introduce the children to the Christian communi-ty to which they will belong and become a part of, as they grow in their faith. Parents will present their child to the community. The child will also be anointed on the heart at this time. Baptisms take place on different weekends in St. Joseph’s, Newtown, St. Patrick’s, Kilquade and St. Anthony’s, Kilcoole. Registration for Baptism and the preparation programme is managed by the parish office at 012819658. SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS: Congratu-lations to the Boys and Girls from St. Catherine’s School in Newcastle who celebrated their 1st Com-munion on Friday 17th May, over the coming weeks of Eastertide we will be celebrating our 1st Holy Commun-ion and Confirmation ceremonies. These are special days not only for our boys and girls but for the whole community as we celebrate our young people growing in faith. Please do keep our young people in your pray-ers over these coming weeks.

TRUE LOVE: I was recently reading an article about the real aspects of true love. The psychologist writing the piece said that many people hide behind the words "I love you." They can start believing that if they say it enough times, it simply becomes true.

Jesus claimed that the world would know his disciples by the fact that they loved one another. In the Church, we speak of loving one another quite frequently. I hope that someone can tell that I am a disciple of Jesus by the way I love others. However, that hope is something I have to keep in the centre of my mind because I fear too often that I speak more of love than act out of love. As Christians, we can find ourselves hiding behind our words. History, unfortunately, has shown us that our witness of action has not always been profound enough. The world will surely know whom it is we serve if we love like Jesus, we act like Jesus, and we serve others like Jesus. Our stewardship will bear witness to the transforming power of Jesus Christ, and we will bring others to him. Our love will be an instrument of our evangelization. Our words will become true, not be-cause we said them enough, but because they are true.

SCRIPTURE READING: Each week we suggest a piece of Scripture to use in your prayer. Light a candle and read slowly the passage, re-read it a couple of times and reflect on it and listen to what God is saying to you. This week’s is John. 14:23-29

PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARDS:

Marie Kelly is this year's winner of Greystones Spe-cial Person of the Year. Marie's friends say she has given her entire life to helping others. A resident of Monteith Park, Marie is always manag-ing flower beds and keeping her estate in manicured per-fection. Marie is a regular visi-tor to nursing homes, bringing magazines as well as her company to alleviate bore-

dom. She is very active in her parish, St Anthony's Church in Kilcoole where she launders and manages vestments and serves as a sacristan, setting up the church for various services then staying on to make sure that everything is in order. Marie is also a wonder-ful knitter and knits special cardigans for little babies. Where she really comes into her own is in her work for Greystones Cancer Support. Marie is a major supporter of the mini marathon and the cancer Support Super Congratulations to Marie Kelly, winner of the Grey-stones Special Person of the Year award.

The joint winner of this year's Civic Award is Pat-rick Pappy Frawley. Pap-py is regarded as an un-sung hero in his hometown of Kilcoole for his years of charity work, carried out quietly and without fuss. In 1996 Pappy set up the Gemma Appeal to help little Gemma Lewis, who urgent-ly needed surgery to save

her hearing. The fund sent Gemma to Florida to Disneyworld and Gemma successfully recovered from her surgery and regained her hearing. Since then the Gemma Appeal has carried on helping sick children. Over the years they have helped 18 local children, some of which went on to make recoveries while others sadly passed on and are remembered with love. They have helped the families of sick children with heating costs, bills, trips away and funeral costs, running all sorts of fundraisers to find the money. Recently the Gemma Appeal donated two defib-rillators to the village. Pappy is also known for his in-volvement in local sports and is a member of Kilcoole GAA and a local golf society. Congratulations to Pappy Frawley, this year’s joint Greystones Civic Person of the Year. The awards were sponsored by the Wicklow Times Newspaper.

GARDA BAND COMING TO KILCOOLE: As part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations for St. An-thony’s church in Kilcoole, the Garda Band, led by Inspector Pat Kenny, will be performing a concert on Tuesday 28th May at 8pm. All are welcome to attend.
