Evaluation Criteria
1 Engaging Manuscripts must be enjoyable and engaging for children from birth to age 3, while inspiring caregivers
and children alike to read it again and again.
2 Research-Informed Manuscripts must be informed by early childhood research and subtly teach caregivers ways to support early language development with infants and toddlers.
3 Expands the Conversation Manuscripts must be additive to the children’s book space. We're eager to think beyond current narratives with stories that elevate nontraditional spaces, identities, cultural experiences, ethnic perspectives, racial backgrounds, and community experiences.
5 Age Appropriate Manuscripts must use vocabulary and concepts that are supportive of developing early literacy for children from birth to age 3. Manuscripts with majority Tier 1 vocabulary words and select Tier 2 vocabulary words strongly preferred.
6 Previously Unpublished Work Manuscripts must be unpublished. Work that has been published in any format, including online or self-published, is not eligible.
7 Succinct Manuscripts must not exceed 250 words.
4 Community-Rooted Manuscripts must reflect an urban setting and demonstrate a community-rooted perspective that resonates with residents in urban U.S. cities like Philadelphia.

These Early Childhood Research resources provide insights into the physiological and psychological development of children, which can be incorporated into your stories through character sketches, storylines, rhythm and more.

Resources
Book Writing It can be a challenge to write a book for an audience as young as 0-3 year-olds. You need to say a lot through a short story, use the correct vocabulary, and keep young, wandering minds engaged. This section supports your understanding of some basic rules, methods, and tricks to write for this audience of children (0 to 3), families, and caregivers.
Urban Context Some of you may be familiar with the experiences of those in the Philadelphia community, but others of you may not. This section contains a mix of articles, podcasts, documentaries, and resources that provide a window into the lives and learning experiences of children, families, and caregivers in the Philadelphia community.
Challenge How-To’s Challenge resources created by the OpenIDEO team to support your navigation of the OpenIDEO platform and creating a successful manuscript.

Bilingual Toddler1-year old Amanda is a curious, adventurous toddler who just celebrated her first birthday in North Philadelphia. She lives in a bilingual household with her parents and grandparents who immigrated to the United States from Puerto Rico. With Amanda’s parents working long hours, she spends most of the day with her grandparents. Her grandparents’ limited English literacy abilities make reading books together—particularly those in English—challenging. Instead, Amanda’s grandparents engage with her through books by creating a storyline in Spanish while flipping through the pages. In the evenings, Amanda’s parents alternate reading books to her in English. Her first words were both Spanish and English.

New Parents18-years old Terrell and Jasmine, 18, are new parents who grew up together in the same neighborhood in West Philly. They are both about to graduate high school, and excited to share this experience with their new baby girl, Destiny. As dedicated parents with packed schedules, Terrell and Jasmine are nervous about how to make the most of their limited time with Destiny to prioritize early learning. They’re hoping for simple, quick daily ways they can support Destiny’s language development that also feel fun and playful.

Community Leader45-years old Sean, 45, is an African American raised by his grandmother in a rowhouse in West Philly. Ever since he can remember, books have been a welcome escape from the stresses of navigating neighborhood tensions and violence, bringing possibility, optimism, and imagination to his world. As an educator, Sean dedicates his creative talents to designing literacy programs for families in the neighborhood in which he was raised. Through free access to books and educational programming, he champions reading, but is frustrated by the lack of books reflecting the experiences of the community he serves.
