Kia ora koutou, dear Parents, Whānau, and Friends

Even though there were some tired children and adults

on Tuesday, the St. John’s Lantern Festival was once again an enjoyable occasion. Thank you, Class 7, for the splendid fire poi performance! We know how hard you all practised, and it was fully worth it because you succeeded in giving your community a memorable gift.

31 Class 4-7 children went to the Kapiti Interschool Cross-Country races last week, and acquitted themselves very well. 6 of them made it into the top 10 and will now go on to represent the Kapiti schools at the regional event next week. Congratulations to all the children who took on this challenge, whether you placed in the top 10 or not!

The folk from the Hohepa Home in Otaihanga www.hohepawellington.com have been bringing some of their residents to Te Rā for weekly Eurythmy lessons for a while now. From term 3 onwards they will also be using our woodwork room for simple projects once a week. We look forward to developing a stronger relationship with Hohepa, and this will hopefully soon involve return visits and projects.

From the Board of Trustees

Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi With my share and your share, the job will get done This whakatauki refers to different strands working together to achieve the same goal. This is exactly what we, the new Board of Trustees, want to do! We have all come from different places to be here at Te Rā Waldorf School, our common ground are our children, not just our own children, but ALL the children at our kura. In that way we become part of the complex tapestry that

weaves in and out and through our school and we look forward to working together. The Board of Trustees would like to send out an immense amount of gratitude and thanks to the previous board members for their hard work, long hours, sometimes difficult conversations, and their continued effort to keep our school structures strong and resilient

Page 3: Kia Manawanui - Te Ra Waldorf Schooltera.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/news2016_11.pdf · Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi With my share and your share, the job will get

through the last three years, which was no easy task. We would particularly like to acknowledge these previous Board: parent reps Miles Thompson, Diane Taylor, Lenka Rochford and Nico Borren,

and trust rep Jill Duncan. Thank you all! The Board of Trustees would also like to send out their thanks to the collaborators that prepared and facilitated our recent Matariki Celebrations so beautifully. What a wonderful way to start our New Year, firstly with stillness, and then to end loudly with laughter and games! Thank you also to the teachers who came on their Sunday and to everyone else who got up early on their day off to celebrate Matariki. At our first public meeting last Tuesday, Sylvia Madden stepped down from her role as Board Chair. Sylvia, on behalf of Te Rā School we extend our deep gratitude for your tireless dedication and hard work over the past three years. We elected Grant Carpenter as the new Board Chair. One final Thank You goes to Kristy Shearer for her work as the Returning Officer, making the board elections a smooth process for all involved. Our next public meeting is on 11 August 2016 at 7pm in the school library.

Raranga Harakeke with Paekakariki School

He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata

Goodwill towards others is a precious treasure

It seems that the timing was just

right for our first day of our

Wananga Raranga with Paekākāriki School. After a heart

felt Pōwhiri we gathered together

to share our learning of harakeke, the tikanga and kōrero

behind raranga (weaving).

Students from Te Rā classes 5, 6 and 7 then spent the afternoon in

the Pā Harakeke o Paekākāriki,

cleaning, harvesting and sharing our skills with their school. We

have continued to help them in

the weaving of their Maro for their Kapa Haka uniforms. We

send gratitude to their Kapa Haka

teacher Whaea Raima for helping to initiate this community

building event.

Hauora Main Lesson – A Special Visit to Class 7

Baby Claire was a special guest to Class 7’s Hauora – Health & Wellbeing mainlesson last week. As part of this topic the class is looking at human development, starting with their own baby photos. Many thanks to mum Liz Apperley for dropping by and making this real life observation possible for our students.

Rippa & Touch Rugby

Te Rā Sports is on Fire! Te Rā (classes 5, 6, 7) participated in the Kapiti Primary Schools Ripper Rugby Tournament, held at Te Atiawa Park on Wednesday 15th June. What a hive of activity the day was, buzzing with excitement throughout the day! Congratulations to Victor, Robin, Coe, Jaksen, Ruven, Shanti, Maanu, Rowan, Karsten, Andraeus & Cyrus, the Te Rā Year 6 (Class 5) team, for taking home the competition trophy for their grade! The children played with absolute spirit and their incredible teamwork saw them play and win every game on the day, well done team, your fierce (but kind) representation of the school and your focus and sportsmanship on the day was on another level!

Last term the Te Rā U11 Touch Team of Maanu, Jaksen, Victor, Leo, Cassady, Xoya, Isabelle, Hinemoana, Cyrus, Ruven, brought home the U11 Touch Rugby Tournament Shield, along with an undefeated season in Kapiti interschool competition. The sportsmanship the children displayed throughout the season and upon winning the shield and the primary schools division, was an incredibly humbling experience to witness and be a part off, the children were beaming with pride from ear to ear. Te Rā, the community and I are very proud of you, ALL of the grades, the U9’s and U13’s that represented Te Rā throughout the Touch Rugby season, well done!

I have a special mention to Ruven Fergusson, Jaksen McIntyre, Cassady Van Mills, Xoya Andrews, Hagar Tabor for trialling and making the Horowhenua U11 and U13 Touch Rugby Representative Teams.

So proud of all the kids! Coach Jeremy.

We hope again to give you lots of information in this newsletter, and this time we have our focus on Anxiety. - Continuing from our previous newsletter which focused on the senses, you will find an article on how the senses can be a window through which we can look at anxiety, maybe help to understand it,

and what we can do to help children and adults alike, where the senses may be part of the reason for anxiety. - You will also find a research paper that looks at the correlation between balance and anxiety in children, and how working with balance, can decrease anxiety and improve self esteem. This was a study performed by the Department of Occupational Therapy, Tel-Aviv University, The Adler Center for Research in Child Development and Psychopathology, Department of Psychology, Tel-Aviv University, and Psychobiology Research Unit, Department of Psychology, Tel-Aviv University, Israel, in 2008. - Then you will find scans of four pages from the book: “Reflexes,

Learning and Behaviour, A Window into the Child’s Mind”, by Sally Goddard. This gives you a picture of the neurology of the developing brain, and the importance of movement for the integration of the primitive reflexes. One of these especially has a big influence on the emotional state of the child/adult, and this one is called the Moro reflex. - And then there is another yummy recipe from Debbie ter Borg in our Kitchen Corner, and right at the end, the opportunity for you all to share your recipes with everyone. There is one here this time. In our “What’s on” column you will find two courses advertised. One is a new training for The Extra Lesson® Programme, which will start in July, so very soon. The other is the training in the Clay Field Therapy®, which will start in January 2017. Please look and see if it is something you might be interested in, or if you know of someone who might be. Feel free to pass this information on. To read the whole newsletter and find all information, please go to: www.auroracollective.nz/newsletter-parent/winter-2016-anxiety/

Happy reading from the Aurora team!
