As the weeks go by our students will work on the site, getting a sense of scale by walking around both the entire site and then walking out some of the house blocks to put things into perspective. They will work on matching the actual plans to the site and will consider actual constraints such as trees, flooding when selecting their Public Open Space for development. They will then have to answer the question, “What will I put in my Public Open Space (POS) and how will it improve liveability?” After listening to experts in this field, our students will be asked to collate the information they have gained over the weeks and integrate it with the data provided by the professionals. Having learned the skills to interpret plans and mapping, they will then commence the task of developing their own concept (POS) for presentation at the end of term. Class time will be allocated to the project and ongoing support for both our students and our teachers will be provided by GTAV. 28th February 2019

From the Principal

This week we had the first of many visits from Steve and Jenny who work with the Geography Teachers

Association of Victoria. GTAV, as they are known, are working with Development Victoria and have involved

our students in the redevelopment of the vacant block of land adjacent to our site with a focus on use of

public space.

This initiative is a new concept for all parties involved and has never been undertaken before. The aim of the

project is to teach about the real world example as part of the curriculum whilst also being used as a vehicle

with which to engage the broader school community. The educational focus of this program would be an

Inquiry Challenge, based on the Victorian Curriculum and relevant to both Grade 5 and 6 students who will be

assessed for learning achieved via pre and post testing of the intended learning outcomes.

Needless to say, Keysborough Primary School is both excited and proud to be a part of this joint pilot program.

This Wednesday, Grade 5 students were introduced to the concept of the Inquiry Challenge, the outline of

which was discussed. After familiarising themselves with planning terms, research questions and hypotheses,

the students will be asked to identify a space on the site and then develop a proposal to improve liveability in

that space. As the weeks go by our students will work on the site, getting a sense of scale by walking around

both the entire site and then walking out some of the house blocks to put things into perspective. They will

work on matching the actual plans to the site and will consider actual constraints such as trees, flooding when

selecting their Public Open Space for development. They will then have to answer the question, “What will I

put in my Public Open Space (POS) and how will it improve liveability?”

After listening to experts in this field, our students will be asked to collate the information they have gained

over the weeks and integrate it with the data provided by the professionals. Having learned the skills to

interpret plans and mapping, they will then commence the task of developing their own concept (POS) for

presentation at the end of term. Class time will be allocated to the project and ongoing support for both our

students and our teachers will be provided by GTAV.

A VIRTUAL REALITY

After introducing themselves to our students and outlining this joint project, Development Victoria introduced

our students to the use of virtual reality as a useful tool in planning. They brought with them some very

expensive equipment with which to simulate virtual reality and each and every student in Grade 5 was given

the opportunity to put on the helmet and try it for themselves.

Immediately after placing the helmet on their heads, they were dropped in a virtual world. Standing on a

street corner, with traffic whizzing by, they were able to walk around their virtual world and either construct

buildings or improve upon the ones already existing. The students were enthralled with the technology and

very quickly adapted to both the helmet and the hand held wands that turned their ideas into reality.

Even I had a try. I could have happily wandered around in my virtual world all day, a truly amazing experience.

ART ROOM UPDATE

Remember a couple of weeks ago, I was in the Art Room and each and every student in the school had been

asked to complete a butterfly for a piece of installation art on the classroom walls – well here is the end

product.

It’s entitled “the wonder of art is watching caterpillars become…..” and how amazing does it look? Spread

across two walls, the swarm of butterflies brings a burst of colour and inspiration to the once plain walls. Not

only is it beautiful, but it’s also inclusive, offering all students the opportunity to contribute their own little

piece of creativity to the overall effect. If you get the chance, be sure to go and have a look for yourself. It’s

well worth the walk.

CHINESE NEW YEAR DECORATIONS

The decorations for Chinese New Year in the Grade 2 area are just beautiful. So colourful and vibrant, they

literally jump off the walls. I must confess that red is my favourite colour.

REACHING FOR THE STARS

This week at assembly, we took the opportunity to welcome our new Prep students as they begin their

education journey. It was hoped that by formally recognising this exciting beginning, our new students would

feel both a sense of belonging and connection to the school.

Beginning school takes confidence, independence and resilience so it is important that our new students and

families know that they are welcomed, safe and secure supported by us all.

Assembly was conducted by our school Vice-Captains, Neth and Jenny, after which the children formed a large

circle around the Agora area. The Prep students walked into the centre of the circle, and on the count of

three, let their balloons go.

Symbolic of “Aiming High and Reaching for the Stars”, each Prep child released a biodegradable balloon into

the open air and as they did I wished for them that they would grow to have the strength, the patience and

the passion to change the world.

A big thank you to Ms Elizabeth Watts for organising this beautifully symbolic celebration. Have a great weekend everyone. Reach for your own stars Leanne Armao. Principal

Specialist Volleyball Training

The 5/6 Volleyball team had a specialist training session on Thursday, 21st February run by expert coach Narene Ignace. The team gained a greater understanding of the game and hope to take the new skills and knowledge into the next interschool fixture against Mt. Hira next Thursday. Narene is from the South East Region Volleyball Academy and invites students who would like to learn the skills and play games of Volleyball to start training at Chandler Park PS on Wednesday afternoons 4:30 - 5:30pm.

SPORTS EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE TO BE BORROWED AT LUNCHTIME

Sports equipment can be borrowed at lunchtime from the Gym between 12:50-1:00. The student who borrows the equipment must write his/her name down, what the equipment is and the date. The named student is responsible for returning the equipment between 1:40-1:50. The Year 6 leaders will manage the process.

School Council Elections Why is Parent Membership so important? Parents on School Councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on School Council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging. I would encourage parents and carers to read the information in the table below or contact the school to discuss the work of the School Council.
