MAKE BOOKS SPECIAL

Turn reading into something special. Take your kids to the library,

help them get their own library card, read with them, and buy them

books as gifts. Have a favourite place for books in your home or,

even better, put books everywhere. Pick a comfortable spot to read

in - one with plenty of light. Make it a routine - whether it's right

before the breakfast, or right before bed, set aside a special time

every day. Give lots of encouragement! Read the words aloud to

your child. Point to the pictures. Say the words together. Laugh

with your child. If you have newborns it's never too early. Reading

can be a bonding activity for you and your child. Introduce reading

in the very beginning, keep books in the nursery and have your

books out for baby and toddler to see! The fun continues after the

last page! When you finish a story, ask your child about his/her

favourite passages, characters, and illustrations. Imagine that!

Encourage your child to make up another character that might

appear in the book. What would it look like? What would it say?

What would you call it?

Get them to read another one

Find ways to encourage your child to pick up another book.

Introduce him or her to a series like The Boxcar Children or Harry

Potter or to a second book by a favourite author, or ask

Mrs Grainger for additional suggestions.

Crack open the dictionary

Let your child see you use a dictionary. Say, "Hmm, I'm not sure

what that word means... I think I'll look it up."

Talk about what you see and do

Talk about everyday activities to build your child's background

knowledge, which is crucial to listening and reading

comprehension. Keep up a running patter, for example, while

cooking together, visiting somewhere new, or after watching a TV

show.

Different strokes for different folks

Read different types of books to expose your child to different

types of writing. Some kids, especially boys, prefer nonfiction

books.

Teach your child some "mind tricks"

Show your child how to summarize a story in a few sentences or

how to make predictions about what might happen next. Both

strategies help a child comprehend and remember.

"Are we there yet?"

Use the time spent in the car or bus for wordplay. Letters and

words are here, there, and everywhere! Dr. Seuss was a master of

Immunisation Certificates

A reminder letter will be going home to parents who have not yet presented their child’s “up to date Immunisation Certificate” to the office, please do so by Friday 27th March. It would be appreciated if you could forward these documents as soon as possible as these records must be kept accurate.

Essential Items Levy -NOW DUE

It would be appreciated if parents could pay their essential Fees of $135 by Friday 27th March. Eligible pension/health care card holders may pay the subsidised amount of $50 upon production of a valid card at reception. If you wish to discuss a payment plan for this payment or any other amount due please contact Michelle at Reception prior to the due date to make arrangements.

PARKING ISSUES

Our neighbours are incredibly tolerant of the traffic that arises around Lynbrook PS at pick up & drop off times HOWEVER it has become apparent that some of our families are inconsiderate of our neighbours. We have received reports of cars being parked over driveways and on nature strips. One resident was most concerned that she was blocked from leaving her house on more than one occasion.

A clear message for parents -

Obey the road rules or risk receiving a fine! Council officers regularly patrol the surrounding streets and if you are caught parking illegally, blocking a driveway or parking on a nature strip you will receive a hefty fine. In the case of an emergency you may even find that your car window has been smashed in order to clear your illegally parked vehicle from a driveway.

Above all, treat our neighbours as you would like to be treated!

Consideration costs nothing but goes a long way.

Please drive safely for the safety of our children.

Payments for any school activities should be enclosed in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name, grade and reason for payment and given to your child’s classroom teacher. If you need to make a substantial payment (camp, fees etc) you are welcome to do so at the office. We accept cheques, EFTPOS & cash however it should be noted that the office DOES NOT CARRY A FLOAT, so please make sure you do not require any change.

Please be advised of the following payment due dates. It should be noted that payment may be made until 9.00 am on the specified day. Should you experience difficulties in making payment please contact Michelle at reception pri-or to the excursion cut-off date to organise a payment plan.

News From Around the School

Year 1

This term the children in Year 1 have delighted us with their fantastic ‘Me in a Box

presentations. The boxes themselves gave an insight into the children’s wide range of

interests and creativity, whilst the contents reflected what was special to them. This

activity was most valuable for showcasing our students’ oral presentation skills. They

learnt the importance of speaking clearly, using positive body language and humour

to entertain, and the benefits of rehearsing in front of their families prior to their

presentations.

The Life Education Van was another highlight of the term, and the children enjoyed

meeting Harold again. The teachers were very impressed with the knowledge that

students shared in matters relating to healthy food choices and how to care for their

bodies. Their willingness to participate and outstanding behaviour made us very

proud.

News From Around the School

Year 2

Our Year 2's have been very busy! We have been working very hard on our reading comprehension skills

throughout the term, it has been fantastic to see so many students dedicate themselves to improvement! We

have also been learning about writing letters, some of our classes have even walked up to the Lynbrook

Post Office to send them! In Maths, we have been working in our addition and subtraction strategies. We

have continued to explore the theme of teamwork and what it means to be a positive influence on

classmates and how to 'get along.'

We are looking forward to Harmony Day next week to see our students celebrating Australia in their

cultural dress!

Year 3

Here we are in the final week of term 1. Year 3 students have been involved in visiting the Life Ed Van

where the focus has been on health and safety. This week students have participated in the ‘Just Like Me’

incursion where they have become aware of similarities and differences between themselves and their

peers in impoverished countries. Students have raised questions in regard to social justice issues around

the world. The Year 3 team looks forward to an exciting Term 2.

Year 4

Over the past few weeks year 4 have explored ‘Choices’. Students have been asked to

identify what makes a healthy or unhealthy choice. Our awesome incursion titled “The

H Team” by brainstorm Productions taught us to think before we make choices. We

questioned what choices we make that are healthy and unhealthy and reflected on

the smart choices we make each day in order to keep healthy.

The Life Ed visit was very exciting! Our topic of cyber safety allowed students to learn

to ensure we use our iPads safely. Harold and Urshla presented a wonderful program. It was heaps of fun.

As the term comes to an end the year 4 team wish all our school community members all the best for a safe and

News From Around the School

LPS Students Doing Their Part On Monday 16th March, the Dolphin Research Ambassadors and the Murrin House Captains asked for any students who are in Murrin, to volunteer to clean up rubbish around the school. It was a great success, we managed to fill up more than 10 buckets of rubbish. We had students from Grade 1 to Grade 6 help us clean up the yard. Thank you to all the children who used their lunch time to help make this school a clean and better place to be. We look forward to next Monday when it will be Buluk’s turn to volunteer!

News From Around the School

Grade 6

The Year 6 students have been immersed in BIG WRITE, Passion Writing and 3:15 story writing this term. In literacy groups, the students have linked reading to writing focussing on the foundations of VCOP. The students have produced some excellent narrative pieces which display many of the writing principles that we cover in our program.

Jack from 6P completed a powerful piece in response to a 3:15 prompt, titled Buried Treasure. This will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Enjoy!

"The curse is here Cody!" the voice drifted off as Cody leant down to pick up the hook.

The light that once clustered the land became a shadow, the ghost of Clarence Buchanan was here. Clarence awoke, an incomplete ghostly monster. One piece of him was missing, his golden hook.

"Cody Miller! Where is my golden hook?" he shouted.

Cody ran for his life. The shadows followed him and grew larger with every step.

"You're a fool Cody!" he screamed. "You're world will now be engulfed with darkness!"

Cody ran until he finally came across a small cave.

"Surely Clarence couldn't find me hiding in here!" Cody whispered to himself.

The cave felt damp and was covered in dust and dew. There was a slight illumination from the moonlight and it smelt like old cheese.

Suddenly Cody found something glimmering on a rock. He inspected closely and found a miniature hole. Inside it was

just the thing that could challenge Clarence. It was a sword in stone.

"He who wealds this sword will get unimaginable power!" a strange voice said with suspense.

Cody pulled at the sword with all his might. A hissing noise filled the cave, it grew louder and louder. A cobra struck out

at Cody injecting him with poisonous venom. Cody dropped to the ground. His vision blurred, he fell unconscious.

Cody awoke in hospital, but his heart rate was low, very low. He breathed his last thin breathe. The room fell silent.

"My deed is done!" the ghost of Clarence whispered. "I have

my golden hook back!"

That was the last time Clarence was seen or heard of again.

It's believed he returned to his grave. Now Cody Miller has a grave of his own.

Year 5

Term One in Grade 5 has been a great one! The students

have learnt all about how to be cyber safe and to ensure they

are being a STAR online. They attended an incursion that

explored the concept of peer pressure and the importance of

making good choices, which all of the students loved! They

even performed the dance moves with the actors!

Term One also saw the students learning about their impact

on the environment around them. They were involved in

developing ideas as to how they can have a positive impact

on their environment instead of a negative one.

Of course, there were lots of literacy and maths sessions

taking place as the students learnt all about sequencing and

cause and effect as well as money and the four operations.

Big Write also took place this term and the students enjoyed

writing narratives related to picture prompts. All of the

stories were very creative and showed great use of VCOP!

Term One culminated in most of the students attending

Sorrento Camp. Lots of fun was had by all!

All of the teachers are looking forward to a fantastic Term 2

as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing at

Gallipoli and Mrs. Welsh goes off to have her baby!
